  • In this series, join us as we dive into the world of the mini lathe. As complete beginners, we'll document our journey of learning to work with a metal lathe and showcase the various parts we create along the way. Please bear with us for any lack of terminology, as we're still novices in this field and may occasionally mislabel certain parts.

The second set of lathe jaws are the reversed jaws, for holding larger stock. You can tell which is which by looking at the curvature of the teeth on the back. They only fit the scroll one way.
Note that the jaws are numbered to match the slots in the chuck. To swap the jaws you need to loosen the chuck all the way until the jaws slide out. Then find slot 1 and turn the key until you see the start of the scroll thread go past. Find jaw 1, and engage it in the thre4ad. Then move to slot 2, find the start of the thread in that slot, engage jaw 2, and so on.
Then wind the jaws all the way in to check that they meet exactly in the middle.
I think that the idea is that you bolt through the table, through the holes in the oil pan, and into the lathe bed. Possibly with a bit of sealant between the bed and the drip dray.

Thank you for providing insights on bolting through the entire table; it does seem like a practical approach for stability. While I might have to remove my box top for this, I've noticed some movement when quickly turning the wheels. Additionally, your information about the jaws and the installation instructions is greatly appreciated. Having these tips will certainly help me avoid any mishaps during the jaw replacement process.

I'm thinking about getting this exact lathe it looks to be pretty well made for what I plan to do with it. One quick question are those two black wheels for knurling?

Its been working great for us, we have logged about 40 hours on it with machining aluminum. I think the black wheels you're referring to are just nuts for the side cover, it does not come with any knurling tools.
