Ep. 8 S&W Bodyguard 2.0 380 ACP Ammo Testing: 90 gr Speer Gold Dot
In this episode of the 380 ACP Ammo Testing Series I look at the 90 gr Speer Gold Dot. I continue to test the ammunition out of my S&W Bodyguard 2.0 380 and Beretta Cheetah 80x.
I do ballistic gel tests, test velocities with my Garmin Xero C1, and perform precision testing with this self defense ammunition.

Ty for the video 👍🏽
I need one
I love it. It’s all running great now.
Another great one, TB. Shot a few odds and ends, but I tested my Sig P224 with a P229 fake mag extension/sleeve, that you were kind enough to send me a measurement of your P229. It wasn’t a big deal project, but there just aren’t any extra P224 mags around for reasonable prices. Liked your printed discussion, not my thing, but this is America, and anything that’s used in a criminal way should simply be punished as a crime, otherwise……
Nice Craig! That p224 is a sweet! Glad you got the p229 mags to work. I agree. We have plenty of laws. We don’t need more.
I 'm abit disappointed wit the general accuracy. But that' s me.
It has gotten better. I was disappointed too. I have gotten sub MOA and about 1 MOA reliably with good 168 grain SMK ammo.
In my opinion with a 380 you’re better off carrying FMJ
If doing that I’d want to make sure it was a flat top and it still fed but it’s probably wise!
Great Chat Brother! 👍🏼
Thanks for watching, my friend!
I need a trust, so I have to go throu all the bs
Gotcha. Yah getting everyone to the notary is such a pain. I’ve only done that once but took me a couple of months!!
@@triggerbarPhD yeah, father-in-law needs to be on the trust in case he wants to go hunting with it or I go outside of town so he can put it up. Great chat TBP.
I just want to make sure the Speer Gold Dot will run in my new S&W 2.0 as some square-nose rounds won't feed in the 2.0 due to it's split feedramp. I'd consider running the Speer GD 👍
I think its a worthy round and that's the key, making sure it runs in your gun. I have rounds that run in mine but don't run in others and others have round s that run in theirs but not in mine!!
Slide bite, picky as hell, and a bitch of a double action trigger pull. What's not to love? lol HARD PASS.
lol. Bbbbbbut James Bond!! 😂🤣
@@triggerbarPhD i hear ya lol 😆
Just picked one up this weekend from Scheel's. Shots great. Very accurate. Going to get some moon clips for .380. But what im wonder if it will also shot the 9x21 & 9x23 ?
I tried 9x18 makerov and that didn’t work. I don’t know about 9x21 and 23
I am enjoying the series brother. I do hope you keep those videos coming. Thanks 🙏 for sharing Sir!!
Thanks so much my friend!!
@ You are very welcome 🙏 Sir!!
It's actually a 7.62x39 case with the shoulders blown out and NECKED DOWN to 6.5
Nope. It was based off the .220 Russian case. You can make it the way you described but that's not the pedigree of the case.
Must be certain guns. Mine does not click at the "wall," and the trigger will engage and drop the hammer at the "wall."
Yes I’ve heard from others that it’s not true on every gun. I’m glad to hear that yours doesn’t work that way!! Not to big of a deal anyways if you know the gun.
Man, the twist rate on the Beretta really holds it back.
I think so. That tiny bit more expansion makes a difference but I’d rather have 0.05 less expansion for the few more inches of penetration.
Thanks for the review! I load my LCP Max with these rounds and it seems decent. I purchased it for "deep concealment," but practically speaking I never actually need to do that. Still fun at the range though! The BG2.0 is almost certainly an improvement over the LCP
Thanks! I end up carrying it a lot just because I need that deep concealment more but man I wish these were reliable in this gun. That’s my knock against the ruger, the ruger runs everything.
@triggerbarPhD it may be the goofy rattling of the LCP Max that everyone complains about. Loose tolerance lets it handle everything perhaps
I had one and for me it just was painful to shoot. It kept pinching my trigger finger. Maybe just that gun.
@triggerbarPhD it's definitely not a particularly good gun. I've heard other people have that issue but it's been fine for me. Always groups low though no matter what I do
They have the subsonic ammo info under "Compliance Info" right under the "Add to cart" button. That may be new though
Thanks. Yah when I bought it all they said was it may not run subsonic ammo with certain flow through suppressors. But they never said without a can. I mean no big deal but they should have that. Sounds like they do. What’s surprising to me is some people in these comments claim theirs run fine without a can subsonic. Weird.
Great demo. 👍How far away from the gel block are you in this video? Thanks!
Thanks! Only about 3 yards.
@@triggerbarPhD I think thats a more realistic test range for short barrel .380s. 👍 And I agree with the part regarding clogged or unexpanded hollow points always having more penetration. I suppose there’s a point to testing them with the barrier cloth in order to determine which JHPs will expand reliability, as well as how deep they will or won’t penetrate. I believe that’s the concept (but not always the reality) of the Critical Defense design, reliable expansion and penetration, the elusive holy grail of the defensive .380.
That's what I was looking for thank you!
Glad you found it!
Do you have this...I am looking around trying to find some chronos with it 124+
Looks like you found it
Look at my ACTUAL FBI data on .380...obviously barrel length in .380 can greatly change projectile performance. I'd rock HSD or Punch, maybe even Old Hydrashok if they fed reliably. I've also got PPU which short barrel I don't think they'd expand but long barrel perhaps even if don't none expanding JHP 16% more damage less bone deflection then FMJ so it's pairing to YOUR barrel length. Both myself and Gun Sam have gone from 4 layer denim to 4 layer "Light clothing". If you want to test PPU and Punch I'm interested in "4 Layer light Clothing" PLUS MDF msg me if you want to do that. With that I want to see 10.5" obviously more ideal but only so much energy w .380, .38 snubs, and most .32 calibers. You've already done Punch and can't spare many so just put the 2 barrel lengths into the "Real World" test protocol (I'd gladly take 10 rds of HSD in exchange)
That's a great point on the JHP vs FMJ. You have great testing my friend. I've still got to get my videos edited and send you the link. I did more testing 2 days ago with HSD but with a 3.25" barrel. It got about 10.5" of penetration, through 4 layers of denim, 1/4" MDF, 2.5" of gel before the MDF. No expansion of the bullet. All clogged with material in the JHP but the JHP made a nasty dirty track that definately was bigger than a typical FMJ would make. I have some and want to test what a flat top FMJ would do compared to a non expanding JHP in 380.
@triggerbarPhD maybe I can mail you a package. I'm mostly interested long barrel. It's about fluid dynamics the jhp will interact destroy more tissue the fmj it flows around that round ogive.
Picked my tikka T3 .300wsm with a vortex strike eagle scope for a old 1983 snowmobile trailer that i corny get $800 for it. Guy said it to him 2 full boxes of ammo to sight in. Looked through the scope and didn't have the lines level.
Ha! Well hopefully you got it all straightened out and I bet is shoots sweet. That was probably a great trade!!
@triggerbarPhD best trade yet. The recoil was so hard it was breaking the stud on the scope ring. Bought a 40 moa rail from mountain tactical and some adjustable MOA mounts for long-range shooting. Had a recoil reduction made for the barrel and cerakote the whole barrel. Have Gotten .38" groups with 165 gr bullets.
My 380s are loaded with Underwood that say 1200 fps with 90g.
Those are pretty good rounds. I have a video coming out on them next week!
Well done! Love the Gold Dot used it off and on for 25yrs as a duty round. I have a BG 2.0 and LCP max, both great close-up DEFENSE weapons. Barrel suckers get all twisted up about the FBI test with .380, however I think the short barrel .380 needs its own standard as a micro defense gun. With a long barrel the .380 does much better in the FBI test. I would like to see .380s compared at 3-7 feet from the gel because that’s about the distance I expect to be at if I have to use mine. Beyond that most people will miss, you can get out of the way, etc. Law enforcement needs ammo to pass tests for OFFENSIVE use. Shooting through barriers, etc. It’s not the same purpose, with self defense you should be breaking contact, law enforcement is engaging and going in. A totally different objective. I carry a .380 it’s not noticeable, I can have it everywhere the law allows and I’m comfortable that if I need to put 2-3 rounds in the center mass close up it will work. Being fast out of the holster is almost more important than the caliber of pistol you have. Even a 44 Magnum is useless if you miss or the threat got you first!
great points! I used to have an LCP max but for whatever reason it wasn't super comfortable to me to shoot (loved carrying it though). I really liked the BG 2.0 as I find it more enjoyable to shoot and easy to carry/conceal. It's a good point about the standard for 380. I've heard that logic before that this is just an up close tool and I think there is a lot of sense to that. I still prefer more penetration and there are other self defense rounds that get that. Also I do think the flat nose or semi wadcutters are decent in 380 as they won't over penetrated like perhaps a 9mm might but will still do some good crushing in the target. But agreed, is that 10" or 8" that's needed? All good questions. I like the 380 because I can get a super small gun that conceals very easily and can always have it with me. Doesn't matter what you want to carry but what you have with you!!
@@triggerbarPhD I agree, all good points. The reason I would like to see it tested as a short barrel defensive round at 3-7 feet is because I think at that close range on average .380 would be used it would get better penetration and performance for a defense round, not at the 10 foot distance. Test a tool under the conditions it is intended to be used. Don’t test a tool using a standard it wasn’t intended for.
With your 2.0 have you experienced any feeding issues with the Speer Gold Dot (being it's a flatnose)
All rounds that are spls and acp's do terrible and denim because of the lack of velocity
Thanks Chris! I appreciate that!!
Yeah they will go a couple inches farther with denim but they might not open it all and go straight through
They don't go straight through with 380 ACP. It's too weak of a round, it just goes deeper when it's clogged. I've got videos coming up testing exactly this part of it. And preview, they don't over penetrate. Different story with 9mm, 357 sig, 357 mag. Even 38 special +p can go pretty deep if the bullet doesn't open up. Not the 380 acp.
@triggerbarPhD I've seen the Whole You tube Nation, I didn't say it would hardcast or even FMJ but if it don't tumble it WILL got through a 16 inch clear ballistic block. Some 38spl will do well not the average factory loads. 90 grain soft lead like fed punch and Hornady critical D. in Short barrel 380 seems to be the few that mostly open and get 12 inch.
Good video thanks!
Thank-you!!!
What do Alaskans use .380 for?
Sounds like the start of a joke but I'm not in Alaska or from Alaska but I bet it's not a round often carried up there.
@triggerbarPhD It was supposed to be a joke, thought you were based in Alaska!
Yeah, i ran the first 50 with no issues. But took my boys out yesterday to teach them live fire basics. And had 8 light primer strikes. I deep cleaned it today and found gunk on the striker assembly that i cleaned off. I didnt see any residue on the channel, but after running qtips, it was super dirty and took 4 qtips to really get clean. The striker looks a little weird, but im not disappointed. The piece came out to be under 250 to assemble. I did change out the trigger shoe to a stock glock. I found theres some flex on the trigger, probably because of the design, that i dont like. Will run it again and see how it performs.
Dang, that sounds very similar to what I had. PSA was pretty good with me in getting it fixed up though so I'd personally do 1 more test then send it back. You can do it straight through FedEx and don't have to use an FFL! They are pretty quick too.
Would love to try this round. But cant find it where I live here in Montana. So I carry the Silvertip. Bought the 2.0 back in August. Absolutely love it. Have about 800 rnds through it. Carry it in a Muddy river pocket holster. Profiles like a cellphone.
I have the same holster!! Very nice! I just got some silver tips, I haven't tested them yet but its on the agenda.
I'd find something better in .380 then Silvertip it frags and WAY underpenetrates real world
I carry my 380 lcp2 with underwood penetrator
I had some issues with them in both of these guns, otherwise I'd go with that.
Awesome Video Trigger Bar, have a great Sunday
Is a good round for 380, if I had to I would carry gold dot yes...
They have a fantastic reputation with all the other calibers, I think this is a great round. My beretta has struggled with JHP rounds so this might be the best round for that gun!!
Nice job TB. In maybe an unfair way, but many of the 380 hollow points have a hard time distinguishing themselves from each other. Kind of silly on my part, but I like seeing the radar, boosted up. Getting a bit weirded for me, the masters of the cosmos here, don't like to let me know what's coming up, lol.
I think that the BG2.0 has a faster barrel twist rate. Makes up for the short length. So far, I like mine and carry it as needed.
What can one expect from a faster barrel twist rate??
Yup, I have a few videos proving that with a slower rate same barrel length kimber micro 380. Typically, not always but often in my testing it gets deeper penetration and better expansion.
Typically I’m seeing deeper penetration and when compared to a similar length barrel, more reliable expansion. In non expanding rounds like extreme defenders it’s goes deeper.
Very Nice testing, that kickback is crazy. When I carried 380 back in the day, after testing, I only carried FMJ in it, because if you add a coat or thick clothing I always thought you wouldn’t get good penetration at all without a regular quality FMJ.
Great point. I just did more testing 380 with clothing and denim and I do see the bullet not opening up but it still gets pretty good penetration. So I could see that. I think I'd want at least a semi flat top vs a traditional FMJ.
Excellent testing👍 Speer Gold Dot was the round that convinced me 9mm was sufficient for self defense. I think it might convince me 380 isn't...🤷♂️ Have to see what those copper fluted rounds do.👍
hahahahha. Yah, still lacking a little bit but not bad especially since you probably won't be taking 20 yard shots with the little gun.
@@triggerbarPhD Shoot, at 20 yards, I am hoping I can still get out of it.😁
Season 6, series 14, episode 8 on fingertip pistols and .380auto. 😄
lol, feels like that right??? I’ve got 6 more..and I shot another video yesterday…but I’ve got 3 new hand gun videos 9mm, 10mm, 380 and a new 8.6 blackout also already shot and ready for editing so hopefully not too much 380 ammo testing!!
@@triggerbarPhD I'll be interested in the 10mm. 8.6 Blk to me is like the semi-auto .30-30 or 7.62x39.
Hey triggerbar how's that security 380 treating you?
So far so good, just shot a second video yesterday. No failures. But I do need to drift the sight like you said. How is yours?
@triggerbarPhD since fixing the sights, it's definitely running better. I want to get one more range session under my belt before i knock the accuracy of it. No malfunctions, although the slide hates locking back on the ten round mag.
@Millzspec dang well glad it’s shooting better. I’ve not had an issue with slide lock back yet. Both my mades seem to work fine. I wonder if you have a bad mag? Hmmm. Does it do it on both?
@@triggerbarPhD just the ten rounder. I haven't tinkered with the follower or spring yet, I'm sure i could get it to work. I've been struggling to get this cheap 22 ar working, thats the time consuming process right now.
That Cheetah is a little tack driver. Wow.
I felt the groove on this round and was able to hit it! For me a dot makes a huge difference.
When I carry 380 it is just plain old FMJ Ball. I just want penetration. I try to avoid carrying but, sometimes a Ruger LCP MAX is about all I can carry.
Honestly, the old standard of a semi wad cutter is probably about the best carry in terms of performance and cost.
Bottom line, gel isn’t a “living” target and only a simulation. That said, it is a good measurement tool. Also, I’m of the opinion that if you need to improve the feed ramps on your firearms, what does that say about the manufacturing process?
I’m with you on both of those points. I should not have to be doing the polishing!!!!
@@triggerbarPhD Even though I'm a broken record on it, I like that this gel test can be compared, as directly as possible, to previous tests. I'm torn on the manufacturing debate. I have a handful of old school guns, and fairly newish guns that have really good, to maybe highest level, fit and finish. S&W is an example, they used to really know how to make a good revolver, wish I hadn't sent some down the road, lol. Today, most of the guns come with cut corners, but at least we can get them, and the majority are far easier to fiddle with, than ever. I guess never say never, but there's no 5k semi-custom gun in my sights, and half that has to really wow me. But, good thing for others, feeling differently.
Been watching through your 380 series as I have just recently picked up a bodyguard 2.0 for my wife. Is the Federal .380 Auto Hydra-Shok Deep 99gr JHP from Eps. 1 still your "winner" overall with your bodyguard 2.0? Or have you since switched to carrying a different round? For my wife, it would of course only be used for a fairly close quarters situation only. Thanks so much, and great series so far!
Yes I still carry the federal hydra shok deep. If I could and it worked in mine I’d probably carry the underwood extreme defender but it doesn’t work in mine very well so im sticking with the hydra shok deep. Thanks again! I’ve got more extended testing of that round coming up with clothing and MDF for more real world testing. Videos have been shot just need to edit them.
Looks like I finally found a good performance round for my new S&W Bodyguard 2.0
Awesome!! Yah this is a good one!
Those aren't in PA, are they? Kicked up an old mulie doe a month back, really big bodied. When it bounced off, it looked like it was moving in slow motion. Thick thing, looked like north of 250lbs on the hoof. Town mulies can be ornery things, lol.
Crazy how big they get. No my daughter photographed these in Utah while she was there. I grew up hunting mule deer and now that I’m back East I forget how much bigger they are.
My piston Revolution came in at just over 7lbs.
I think mine is right around there, thanks for the clarification!
Those are big
Mule deer grow different than white tail. Always surprises me after only seeing white tail for a while.
