Absolutely and I have no doubt someone who shoots that revolver better than me could beat me shooting the 460 Rowland. Just as you said practice is the key.
I enjoyed your video in the comparison. That 44 magnum really kicked your butt lol. Definitely takes practice with a 44 magnum to be able to manage that recoil and shoot accurately, but it can be done. You were dead on with the Rowland so for you it is by far the best choice to carry into the woods. Thanks again for doing that. Great video and good job on it.
Bro! You smashed it with the 460! Holy mole. That is the woods gun for you. The .44 is a bigger beast but the DA trigger on top of recoil creates a heck of a horse to try to handle. Great comparison! Great video! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks my friend!! As I said, I also don’t rain with that guy and need to. Maybe I need a 500 bushwhacker so I think 44 mag is easy? 🤔. Thanks again and yes, I like this gun and shoot it well!! Hahaha
I think so TO. Training would never hurt, but there's still that double action pull, that I think pulls accuracy and split time down to some degree. The first shot time might tell a story, maybe plenty of time to get the first revolver shot off in single action. Nice job TB.
The 460 Rowland, just in case that brown bear is really Sasquatch's pet.👊🤣 Back in 1992, I went on a guided hunt on Kodiak Island in Alaska, all of the guides carried a big bore revolver of some kind, in addition to their rifle. As I understand it, most have traded in the revolvers today for the higher capacity semi auto's available today.👍 Good video.👍
Always go with accuracy over power. But if you can combine the two, even better. The 460 Rowland does just that. I'm deadly accurate with my 1911's in 45ACP but am a surgeon with my Kimber 1911 LE/RL II chambered in 460 Rowland. Absolutely love the rounds through that Kimber, being accurate with a sledgehammer at long range is a nice feeling.
Definitely better with the 460 pistol than the 44 mag. I find either my .44 mag revolvers that a good set of Hogue grips make all the difference. BUT, the 460 would be my pick with just capacity. The rounds are fairly close in performance, but advantage 460 for the majority of people. Really cool comparison! Love these sort of side by sides. Hope you have a great week!
Practice is definitely key. Good job on that. However, I think the same length barrel could have edged the 460 closer to the 44. Awesome video and good info, thanks.
I think the effective barrel lengths are pretty similar. The FNx tactical has a 5.3” barrel, the 629 has a 5” barrel. If course we all know the cylinder is not included in a revolver and provides some pressure though some escapes in the gap. So I’d say there are pretty close on barrel length. Perhaps a 4” barrel for the 629 would be a better comparison but then we are getting into guesses as to how much the cylinder and cylinder gap add/remove from velocity. I should have mentioned this point. I meant to but forgot when it came time to shoot and edit! Thanks for adding this comment!!
That's a lot of power, and a lot of fun. Nothing like shooting a big bore handgun. Another great video, with great information as usual. Wishing you and your family a wonderful day my friend.
Thanks Joe! I enjoy shooting the big guns that I have! I like seeing how they compare and perform. Thanks very kind of you and hoping you and yours are well too!!
I don't care what anyone says, you're a great actor. Definitely, it matters that both have reliability, but size and weight have brought the semiautos into the mix. Good, honest 44 mag double action group. If that's a standard of sorts, you can probably cut the Rowland times down, if you're okay with a larger group. A hundred foot-pounds down in your test for the semi, but you stuck well north of double the total energy into the test target? Good stuff, people's choice award.
That’s kind of you Craig. I thought about doing an energy calculation while shooting. And for sure, I could and should cut both times down, neither were great but it just shows the relative speed. Almost 40% faster on the Rowland for 90% of the energy. Not bad.
I don’t know how 44 magnum could lose if you’re just comparing ft pounds and pure shot per shot lethality. However, their are many benefits to the 460 Rowland. Virtually all of the available loads are squarely in the mid range of 44 magnum that most people who actually carry 44 magnum for their own protection. When it comes to bears, 44 magnum can quickly become quite the spicy meat ball as long as you’re using a revolver that can handle that extra power
Absolutely. And I didn’t cover that. I compared two JHP’s for comparison and they look better in gel. In real self defense against a bear, I’m carrying hard cast in these guns, especially the Rowland.
I live in black bear country, so 10mm with Underwood Xtreme Penetrators is sufficient. If I lived in grizzly country, I'd definitely opt for the .460 Rowland over a 44 magnum.
Interesting…. I completely agree with your approach. I carried a big .44 mag in bear country until i got charged once and realized just how fast these bear come. I could shoot that gun great single action but sucked double action. I realized a faster gun that i shot more accurately is better even if you loss something in terms of ballistics ( ballistics are irrelevant if you miss)
@ Well that bear in my opinion was after a fish i had just caught seconds before so i was not very nervous…. I was just backing away from the fish and if the o passed it towards me i would have unloaded. After that i did a .460 rowland conversion in a Springfield xd just so i could get shots off faster. With that gun I’m less accurate than single action with a revolver but more accurate than double action. Its been awhile since ive been up to AK though down here in t bear country in grab a 10mm. The one time i did have to shoot at a bear it was with shotgun and slugs which definitely works. I’m a little nervous with a charge and just a handgun. Clearly people have successfully defended a charge with a pistol but damn…. Brown bear can be so damn big its not a comfortable feeling . I did salmon population estimates for 10 years so spent a lot of time around brown and black bears. They are almost always fine unless you surprise one
@ wow, great stories!! That’s fantastic how you were loaded. Yes for sure I’d rather have a shotgun or rifle as protection than any traditional handgun. Closest I’ve come is hearing one and scat and then that creepy feeling you are being watched while cleaning an elk kill. I kept shining my light but didn’t seem anything. Could have been a mountain lion because we saw tracks that day too. Sometimes, like when I was cleaning, you have to put your primary weapon down or like when you are fishing. I bet that was an awesome 10 years and you have some great memories of that!
@ Some good memories and good fish. The magnum i was running a bear load of some sort. i’ve actually had 2 rowland conversions the current one doesn’t shoot as well on a commander frame. (its the recoil sometimes ejects the mag ). 3 years ago i was on baranoff island doing research which is just silly with bears. we got charged/ approached 3 times on that trip and i was once by myself charged/ approached. several accidental encounters where you are the bear walks up on the others unaware. The best thing is don’t yell a s scream. Just talk calmly to the bear and slowly back away. Even the solo charge that worked with a female with cubs…. my current protocol would bear grab bear spray in one hand and your gun un the other. Unload the bear-spray if they change, drop the can and then set up a shot it they don’t. Fortunately i was always around them during salmon runs. Those bears are well fed and completely don’t care about humans… They will walk up to you to bump you out of a fishing. There’s about 7 reasons i would dump the bear spray first. The main being most of those charges are just bluff/ territorial charges, so you don’t need to kill the bear and i’ve almost never seen a bear respond to warning shots (i.e once you start shooting its on) The bear spray has about a 5 foot effective cone a handgun more like 5 inches (basically the skull around the nose)…. except a shotgun with slugs… if you miss a kill shot there it will still bone and do some real damage.)… Honestly I’m slightly less nervous around bears than driving the local highway 🤣🤣. The seem a little bit safer the the average human (and possibly a little smarter). One of my favorite parts of Salmon crews was interacting with the bears
WOW. So probably my shorter barrel then, that's great information. Thanks so much for sharing this! That's amazing. Is that with this ammunition or are you loading your own?
@@triggerbarPhD I'm loading my own. It was a slow process. I was being very careful didn't want to damage my firearm. I converted my guns myself and added a safty feature in my recoil system also. But load development was in baby steps. I used power pistol powder and 45 win mag cases cut down and Rowland cases both experimenting. If you are worried about people, I can't imagine any 460 rowland round wouldn't get enough penetration. But for grizz or polar bears, I'd go hard cast!!
A revolver barrel does not include the chamber but a semi-auto pistol barrel does include the chamber so it's not really a fair comparison to say that the barrel lengths were similar, the revolver has an advantage because the chamber is not included as being part of the barrel length. The lighter .460 Rowland cartridges do get to the mid range .44 Magnum levels but that is the top end of the Rowlands power, this is due to having a small case capacity while the .44 magnum can be loaded hotter and even to far higher levels but often the super hot cartridges are only recommended for certain revolvers and Smith and Wesson is usually not on that list.
The FNX Tactical is 5.3” so it’s not too far off the 5” revolver especially taking into consideration the cylinder gap. But I hear you. I haven’t started reloading for the Rowland yet but I’ve been fairly disappointed with the factory ammo in the Rowland. Almost 100fps lower than advertised out of my gun. I’ve just had a couple go over 1000 energy fps. But this is close to 44 but as you said it can be loaded hotter.
I'd find it extremely difficult to choose the revolver and having only 6 shots and making hits so much harder. Especially on a moving target. Although, I guess it would very much depend on what sort of terrain & visibility a person could expect or at least try to plan for? Seeing a bear "casually" approach from a distance before it charges once it gets close(semi-auto)? vs one surprises you and having to draw and fire with it already engaging you (revolver)? I wouldn't want to watch it walk closer & closer before an actual attack - and rely on getting enough hits with iron sights & just 6 shots. I also wouldn't want to hope the action cycles if there's good chance the slide will be interfered with if it gets on you before you know what's happening. Tough choice! Really. I know that the pistol is often considered a backup to a long gun...but if that long gun happens to be a bolt-action while hunting?
