I will be sharing Tips and Tricks I've learned in my beekeeping career. I hope they are useful to you.
I will also archive videos made during remote teaching at the University of Manitoba, Fall 2020, where I teach in both Philosophy and Agriculture.

Catching a swarm in a wet spring.
Old timers always told me that hives are more likely to swarm if they are constrained by rainy weather. More probably, wet weather keeps a beekeeper from their appointed rounds and the hives get ahead of them.

Epoxy Floor coating

Concrete doesn’t hold up well to honey. The slightly acidic nature of honey will degrade a good floor too soon. I’ve decided to coat my floor with a durable epoxy coating while I have the equipment off the floor.

Ha Phil enjoyed your video I have a question that is about your last one with the formic pro, The way u did it did u do a mite check to see if it worked. Your way did not kill anyone, and I liked that, but did it work. Thanks and have a Blessed week
Mites were too low in the hives I checked to make a statistical inference. This treatment was to catch any resistant mites the apivar missed.
Those are all tall hives, it's going to be a good year!
Right now those boxes are only a measure of my hopes and dreams.
Looks like you are catching some rains up there along with some swarms. Are you on a canola flow already?
Yes early canola now running fast.
I started using the "4x7 meat pads and 65% liquid formic acid" this year, much cheaper than formic pro. I'm curious what downsides you had with that method?
I wanted something that would release more slowly. Not sure I really got that.
what is the blue liquid?
Windshield washer antifreeze
@@philbeeman Thanks! I thought so!
Where did you get the blower?
This blower I’ve had for over 20 years. Came from local hardware store.
maybe it was just a bump of a box that settled
This was good video so was the last 1 when u put the formic on the hives, I have used formic since I became a bee keeper. ib 2014 so far I have never lost a hive I did lose a queen but everything turned out fine. I like the blower as well. have a blessed day
Interesting windstorm 😮
Man I like that idea with the blower!!
Am I understanding you only leave Formic pro on 7 days? 2 strips for 7 days?
This year that’s how it has worked out.
That blower is fantastic for making smoke. We use them in our operation
Brilliant, as usual! Would using the EZLoader help? My back is killing me right now with all the lifting.
If I was working solo I would probably try it. But these boxes are pretty light as well have been rained out of the spring flow.
do you ever lose a queen using the blower?
Maybe.
My experience with FP is more similar to yours.
Curious what you and Ian did different
He foolishly followed the label instructions.
@@philbeeman I used two pads with temps in the 85 f range but I had deep honey supers on and didn’t have a problem other than 1 that had an old queen
Really good idea using the blower and the vented box to get the queen down before the flow and supering up. Another very efficient and easy method I've seen on a commercial scale was to use fume boards to get the queen downstairs before slapping QE's on the single. All the best for your season!
I just might adopt that idea
Thanks for the video 😊. The mites hope will be gone
I hope so too
If you dont move the queen have you really alleviated swarming?
Don't forget to put candles in the church, for the bee mothers.
This video gives me a little more courage to try formic than someone else's video recently uploaded. I put apivar in broodless, two weeks before pollen patties in the spring and two rounds of oxalic acid in the fall when broodless. All forms of treatments work best broodless even formic. The temperature on the vaporizer is 160⁰C, because OA is easily destroyed by heat. I don't see mites, so I won't need formic just yet. Waiting for Part 2, percentage of queen loss and brood condition, thanks.
I’m gonna use that next time someone tells me to wear gloves! lol I wanna keep my callous hands
Please do!
I won't be touching that junk again. Killed a bunch of my queens. They should be liable for the damages..
One thing I will find out soon is if the emergency queen cells are viable or not that where made queenless by the formic. If not, Im in a jam.
Thanks Phil. I'm impressed with your tweaks with formic usage. Will look forward to Part II. Hope our weather pattern becomes a bit drier.
I like your approach to this. I have lost a few queens and think this may help. And I may offset the boxes a small bit
Phil, this video made my day. Greatly appreciate you sharing your experience with Formic acid. I use Formic Pro (and have used the older versions). Use to put it on in August but have moved to late May/early June treatments. I liked the comments on humidity, amount of honey in hives, placing gel packs at the back away from the centre of brood and strategy with lids. Thanks
The only Formic product I'll be interested in is when Randy gets his over time perfected. Formic is to harsh on the bees for me to want to use it, getting under the caps is not that big of a deal to me. Why do I care if I get under the caps if I kill bees with the treatments, I have a short season I can't afford killing bees by choice. Thanks for sharing your time with us Phil, Blessed Days...
What do you think about the 65% flash treatments ?
That’s gonna depend on the exact methodology used.
How can formic acid flash treatment be done?
@@nikoutzas6155 you preferably need an open bottom screened bottom board with the tray to do it and need to respect the dosage according the temperature and deeps you have.
I thought it was the bees chewing some of the reflectix, which didn’t seem right. Makes more sense that the Formic off gasses are responsible for it. Thanks
Ashokan farewell, one of my faves to play on the fiddle.
Thanks for the follow up!
That's about the fastest I ever saw a box cleared of bees. What brand is that neat little blower? I haven't found one yet quite like that one. 😊😊
Makita
You’re a talented guy! The list is long!! 👍🏼
Thanks for your kind words.
That is one gigantic fiddle you're playing, Phil! 🎻😄
The bigger the better.
Surprised you didn't knock out the emergency cells before installing a new queen.
She will cut them down.
That is correct... BUT she may also be murdered and the bees may just not kill the emerging others ... your chances are higher knocking down all cells @@philbeeman
Wow, how can he spot a queen...they all look the same for me Great video!
Thank you very much!
Can I get measurements for building that. Trailer?

@@philbeeman so after initial contact they have not been emailing me back, I really need to figure out a trailer for this machine.
@@calebbegley6850 sorry. No time this week.
I called those guys, they had no interest in helping out unless I just bought the trailer for 6,500
@calebbegley6850 Ok. Let me see if I can send so photos.
Thanks for the update Phil! Hope you have a great season!
Thanks, you too!
good to see you back Phill, I was just looking to see if you had any new content yesterday...And expecting more great info :->
Welcome back. Hope you have a great bee season!
Good to see your back Phil Neville from Australia
It’s a good when you gotta build 2 because the 1 was built too strong:)
Ha Phil good to see u back I enjoyed your video. Question you took the queens out and made 2 nucs what did you put back in that hive did you let them make there own. Thanks Hope the weather changes for you to have a wonderful bee season have a blessed day
Those will get queen cells tomorrow
Thanks for the update…Good to see you back. I am going to try the late summer split this year. Did you use your own grafted queens or purchased mated queens?
Yes and yes
What electric motor and manufacturer are you using?
Does the honey have to be heated and if so what temperature?
It’s nice to be a bit warm.
Love the innovation displayed here. For an expanding beekeeper, do you mind sharing where you order the tank from and the crane assembly?
So the third one you tested with around 22 mites, was that the control?
Great video bro ❤❤
I bought an Ezyloader and from what I see here I'm loading hives while this thing is still being setup.
I use my 2 (soon to be three) Ezyloader almost exclusively for honey production. The wait will be worth it.
