Why Ghibli’s Male Characters Feel Real (and Disney’s Don’t)
We all love Disney's heroes - Iconic, bold, and larger-than-life. But Ghibli’s men might be the definition of masculinity we need more of. They're quieter, more human, and rarely the center of attention. So, which approach is ACTUALLY more memorable? Time to break it all down, exploring how Disney and Ghibli shape their male characters in ways that reflect not just their unique styles, but also their cultural roots. Plus, we'll uncover what this says about the evolution of heroes in modern cinema. Like and subscribe for more deep dives into your favourite animated films & studios! :) I always pin my favourite comment by the way

Japanese glazing is crazyyy🙏
I heard of it the year it came out because of the 3D lighting technology used to light the 2D characters was pretty revolutionary and really hasn't been seen since.
How about bad guys? I feel like Puss in boots and bad guys coming out basically the same time wrecked the box office.
DreamWorks is inconsistent with the quality of their movies as they make lots of bangers but originally they make a small piece of missed potential but they always manage to recover from the occasional bad movie
I always thought that US (Disney's also but not uniquely) male characters are essentially walking psychological issues.
in like 2003 princess mononoke changed my entire life. rented it from the local movie store and for the week i had it must have rewatched it nearly a dozen times.
I also wonder how much of it is specifically Miyazaki having been at the head for the entire time. The non-Miyazaki films have been pretty bad. Disney succeeded in outliving its founder and continuing to make good movies. Ghibli hasn’t proved that yet. We’ll see if the study has legs, or if it’s almost all based on an amazing founder.
Like Treasure Planet, people always forget Atlantis is also Disney movie.
But it's such a banger
Dreamworks males are pretty interesting. Shrek trying to save the day? No! He wants his swamp back Does Hiccup have super powers? No! He has his wits, intelligence, strong empathy and his sarcasm😂 Spirit? Wants to get back to his family. Pixar is a lot more nuanced to
Americas main mission is to DUMB DOWN and Disney is an amazing vehicle for that :)
Basically America is based on fake , Japan is based on reality lol
As a kid, i was so disturbed by Ghibli animations. Some things were nearly traumatizing to me in Films like Princess Mononoke, Spirited away and even Howls moving castle. The animation style made me feel really weird too. But now im 25 and i appreciate studio Ghibli woth my whole heart. Which makes me wonder, is it not meant to be watched by little kids or was i the only sensitive one?
Very few of Ghibli movies are suited for kids, imo. Most of them for teens and older.
Today I watched it and it IS a masterpiece
Probably because ghibli doesnt just roll movies out like some sort of money hungry, dirtbag company...
It's simple, Disney movies follow the Hollywood storytelling formula and literally uses templates. switch out any of the heros in any of their movies with any other they created and it's gonna be the same... Formulaic, is probably the right word. East Asian storytelling is way different.
I believe the reason Quasimodo is such an outlier characterization-wise is because the "source material" of hunchback of notre dam - notre dam de paris by viktor hugo - is very different than the other tales disney usually uses, so it already starts out with a far more complex character
KLAUS IS AN AWESOME FILM I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND IT TO MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY❤❤❤❤
Omniman has such a way with words 4:19
i got the chance to show my dad this movie yesterday & he loved it sm. it made me smile cuz i actually showed this movie as a birthday for him (yea his bday is in the 31st december ijbol) & im glad he loved it. the last movie i showed him that he rlly loved was grave of the fireflies
Shoutout to all the book authors of Studio Ghibli's movies, as many of them are film adaptations! Howl's Moving Castle, for example, was first a book. Ghibli did a fantastic job bringing these stories to life, and they only exist because of the book authors who created the source material.
You're right!! Shout out to those amazing stories that Ghibli bases it's movies off 😍
I'd also say Ghibli movies give young boys/man much better advice how to handle being romantically interested in a woman than any Hollywood movie.
100000%. They're way better role models for romantic relationships
Disney characters are often ARCHETYPES! that‘s why they don‘t feel real, and why they shouldn‘t. Children learn about morals, ethics, good and evil through archetypes and mythos. Disney movies are also not original but also old stories readapted, meaning that these stories survived and played a roll shaping societies… Once we set our system vales children can learn about nuances and reality with Ghibli (which are amazing btw), but let‘s not undermine the role of heroes and villains.
It's hard to say that one is better or worse than the other, because how do you quantify what makes a story better than another story? I think they both have their pros and cons- disney stories tend to be simpler to understand and are easier for kids to follow along with. Its easier to pick out whos "good" and whos "bad." The downside is that the plots tend to mimic each other and can become predictable and even a bit boring. Ghiblis strengths are that all of the characters tend to have a lot of depth and are really compelling, but these finer details are overlooked by a younger audience. The level of thoughtful detail makes Ghibli movies incredibly rewatchable, as you continue to recognize and learn new details, and even interpret them differently over the years. Disney storytelling tends to be much more definitive versus Ghiblis subjectivity. Disney likes to tell you what's good and what's bad, whereas Ghibli just tells you things as they are and lets you decide how to feel. I think both are fine in terms of storytelling, it mostly depends on what story you want to tell and how you want the audience to feel.
If Polar Express gave us great initial C movie. _Klaus gave us the Doki Doki_
As someone who loves Ghibli movies, i have to admit that i don't really like the absence of villains in Ghibli movies. Disney does villans in a childish way (most of them) so i'd love to see a serious antagonist going against deep and complex characters like Ghibli protagonists. I know that some ghibli movies have some kind of antagonists but if even the villains were developed better, some movies would be even greater :3
I definitely get what you're saying. Ghibli's antagonists are great but they're definitely not just pure evil. It'd be cool to see some crazy evil and powerful villain
This was my favorite critsmas movie as a kid
My teachers let me watch this it was so cool
宮崎駿は実際の人間をモデルに描きます。その過程で本質も描くのです。彼の特徴は、女性の精神的な強さに惹かれていることです。それは女性が男性の真似をすることではありません。
This was very simpy
😎😎
Disney all time win. Hentai japanese animation suck 👎
au contraire.
I always adore the interpretations of gendered traits of Ghibli cast
😍
What Disney needs is to return to the romantic male hero who kills dragons. Prince Philip was a bad-ass.
Mmh but like they gotta revamp him 😂 more complexity plss
My family is CRAZY, they think Klaus is… UNDERATED?!
I love Klaus it is my go to for Christmas. 1:41 I have seen the Disney version of a Christmas Carol.
it is funny that disney is falling and dreamworks is rising because dreamworks use to be a part of disney
Hercules, Aladdin, The Beast, Simba, Mowgli, … all the classic male characters - were all very real to me. But now the modern Disney movies feel so fake to me.
There's such a beautiful charm in some of the Renaissance Disney characters. Even Tiana I loved sm
DreamWorks animation should make an animated the hunter call of the wild movie
I love it for the new groundbreaking animation styles!
No, I’ve definitely heard of it. Saw the trailer one Christmas and I wanted to watch it. I always watch it each Christmas now, always thought it was so high quality and amazing 😊
People wouldn't mind the live-action stuff if it was done well. They tried to be closer to the mulan story for the live-action mulan movie but auduences wanted a live-action version of the animated movie, they got some stuff culturally inaccurate, there were no asian people behind working behind the scenes, people wwre hurling sexist comments at the lead actresses because the movie is starring a non-wite woman, and disney didn't realize that china was never going to accept a mulan movie not made in China. The peter pan and wendy movie was supposed to be based on the books and completely different from the animated peter pan movie but disney wanted it exactly like the animated movie and slashed its budget, so they tried to do mix of both and all that did was garnered racist and sexist comments from trolls. The little mermaid live-action did a better job of mixing in original elements and being inspired by disney compared to most (but would have been better highlighting the afro-carribbean elements and the seven seas part like the disney junior ariel show) but it got its budget slashed and people were too pissed at the actress being black and hurling racist and sexist comments at her to realize that she was the one pulling most of the weight in the movie. The lion king live-action movie may have made the most money (probably because the characters were all animals), but it was the most soulless of the remakes because it was too much like the animated movie (which is why people watched it but disregards the point of an adaptation) and the animation was too soulless when it came to the animals' emotions. Lady and the tramp was okay and only managed to escape a lot of backlash because the main characters were dogs. Cinderella and jungle book didn't get that much backlash because they were the first ones made. Maleficent didnt get as much backlash because it focused on a different character and because of angelina jolie. Beauty and the beast copied the movie too much but it didn't get as much backlash because of emma watson fighting to make the dress yellow like in the animated movie instead of red and white. Aladdin would have gotten more backlash for copying the movie entirely and mixing up south asian and swana cultures if it wasn't for will smith's star power. A lot of people keep saying they want new original stories and good adaptations, but whenever they see a new original story or a good adaptation, they scoff at it if it has a gal, poc, and/or lgbtq+ person as a main character. [I saw mufasa recently and it was way better than the lion king live-action movie - even if i have issues with some of the takes they put in the movie - because they did something different while not diverging from its lore and improved its animation. But because of the backlash the lion king got for its soulless animation, not as many people will watch mufasa. It is a double-edge sword because the disney junior ariel show and mufasa are better adaptations than the live-action the little mermaid and lion king, but they wouldn't have gotten approved for creation by disney if those movies didn't do so well. Disney put most of their original movies on disney+ and rely on their remakes to generate a lot of money for their original content, which isn't good but sadly makes sense from their standpoint when you see how trolls attack certain original stories and non-wite actresses in female-led stories.]
Jokes on you I HAVE AND WATCHED IT EVERY YEAR!
Love this film. Its the only christmas movie that i consider a must warch every christmas. Sadly everyone in my family hates or dislikes christmas.
AGREED!! Klaus is ridiculously good.
