To be fair, entertainment is 50/50: sometimes you need to know what your audience wants and show that you hear them, but on the other hand, you should be innovative and tell them "this is different, but you're gonna want to check this out."

The 00's gave us some genuine, albeit underappreciated, masterpieces; The Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis The Last Empire, Lilo and Stitch, Treasure Planet, The Princess and the Frog. Since then, Disney just hasn't been the same and should really look back on what made the 90s and 00s spectacular. It wouldn't hurt either to try bringing back hand drawn animation

I think the main reason Disney has been going through such a downward spiral is because parodies have become the main trend in American animation. DreamWorks "Shrek" franchise was meant to parody Disney's idealistic fairytales, and lot of popular American TV cartoons these days seem to follow a similar mix of humor and seriousness as "Avatar: The Last Airbender" such as "The Owl House", "Steven Universe", and "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power". People are more critical of what constitutes a strong character and overlook the possibility of strength behind characters who might be more quiet and reserved.

I feel like Disney needs to reimagine their animation studio again Like in 80s" with the little mermaid that was the beginning of the renaissance , they haven't going in a good direction lately and have lost the creativity of creating new Stories But something tells me that maybe they still have some magic left that they had decades ago, let's just look and the short they released a few weeks ago wish upon a studio Where they were able to gather all the Disney animation Studios characters in a group photo and it felt so nostalgic and comforting to see all of our favorites characters together and interacting with each other of almost all of thier classic animated movies just by doing that shows that Disney It still has some creativity and a sense of making a good story with memorable characters, it sems that they just hasn't gotten a spark yet and exploited beyond what they are capable of doing The people who are in charge of Disney right now are not making the best decisions and are only sinking the company. They need better people who are capable of creating good stories again and raising the quality of the company and they need to get away from all these cultural wars and politics that are only is dividing people into absurd discussions For now they have been releasing intermediate movies Some have been good and some have not. Maybe I think they are in an experimentation phase to see what works and what doesn't, so I don't know. I don't know if I'm going to see the new Wish movie they're going to realese So far it hasn't caught my attention and I don't like the music that much. Maybe I'll wait until it comes out on Disney Plus to see it the same thing is happening to Pixar and thier movies .. But for the mean time it seems that the situation is not going to improve in the short term, let's hope that Disney returns to being the animation studio it once was.

Disney's revival of the golden age of animation, known as The Disney Renaissance, was a time of immense artistic and commercial triumph. However, critics contend that the films during this period were predictable, heavily reliant on musical numbers, influenced by Broadway, and centered around princess stories. While some argue that Disney has recaptured the spirit of the Disney Renaissance with recent films like Tangled, Frozen, Moana, and Raya and the Last Dragon, others argue that these films lack the originality, diversity, emotional depth, and cultural significance of the films released between 1989 and 1999.

That's interesting. I definitely wouldn't characterize them as predictable, and actually the Renaissance period had barely any princess stories (Tarzan, lion king, Mulan, Pocahontas, Hércules, hunchback of Notre Dame, beauty and the beast), so I'm confused as to why critics thought that, but they're definitely not perfect films.

I agree to an extent but as a 3D animator I actually heavily dislike the way that Wish looks right now. The creative team at Disney isn’t used to experimenting with different styles when it comes to 3D animation but I think they saw the success of the creative direction from Spiderverse or Puss in Boots 2 and decided they wanted to do something that’s more cartoonishly stylized but it fell short because they still kept the same style of 3D modeling with the same-face-syndrome disney princess. I really hope it’ll have a compelling story but in terms of art direction, they really need an extra push to leave their weird comfort zone and actually create something stylized.

@@miguelmunuera2601 I don’t think they can ever go back to doing a full 2D film considering they’ve actually gotten rid of all the equipment they had to be able to make a feature-length 2D film, at least that’s what I’ve heard according to a former Disney animator. But they could maybe do a hybrid film, I think that could end up really interesting. An example of a piece of media that is a mixture between 2D and 3D is Arcane. All the backgrounds are actually painted in 2D and so are all the effects, while the characters are all 3D. I think they implemented that much better than Disney did with Wish.

I had the opportunity to talk to Nick Bruno (the director of Nimona) and he even stated that if we want Disney to change their art direction the “old men at the top” have to go, lol. Great vid! I too feel that the company has kind of fallen out of favor with the public in recent years due to Disney burnout, with much of their content feeling very "been there done that." Not to mention all the controversies that seem to be following the studio left and right sooo yeah, everyone hates Disney now lol
However, I do sometimes wonder if a lot of this disappointment stems from the idea that many of the tropes we admired and associated with Disney animation in our youth are now feeling more cliche and repetitive in our adulthood. Plus, the fact that we as adults now are more aware of Disney and their more corporate, monopolistic intentions and those negative feelings do affect how we view their current films when compared to our more naive and blissfully ignorant childhoods. Nostalgic bias towards the old and jaded feelings towards the new.
Also the idea that the 90s films defined a generation/impacted so many kid's lives can also be applied to the Revival era films. Tangled, Frozen, Moana, and yes even Encanto ( I personally LOVED that movie but hey maybe it is Midcanto XD) Imo, these are great films that are worthy of standing head to head with the studios' previous iconic work. Whether or not Wish will join that status remains to be seen. I'm still cautiously optimistic, but, there's already some things I'm not super stoked about. That new villain song just ain't doin it for me, and Asha feels like she's following in that whole "adorkable" Disney heroine trend again. However, the animation looks pretty cool, the character designs look great, and Ariana DeBose has such an amazing singing voice.

Thanks for the amazing comment, honestly very good points. I do think part of it is bias and nostalgia, but I also heavily favor 2D animation vs 3D, I just feel like it's way more beautiful. Also, although the revival moves are good for sure, I would argue that the characters, story telling, and songs are just a slight notch above them in the Renaissance era. Anyway, let's hope Wish turns out to be a great one! So that they feel incentivized to produce more original animated movies, that's what's important :)

@@miguelmunuera2601 Oh definitely. I do believe that there was an air of sophistication with the older 2D movies, making them palatable for kids as well as adults back in the 90s. Not to say we don't get that now, but it does feel like the newer films are a bit more goofy and focused on making one-liners and jokes every 3 minutes lol. But i still love them.
Also yes, 2D animation is such a misunderstood art form here in the US. Both 3D and 2D are great but there's a certain charm to seeing 2D drawings come to life with traditional hand drawn techniques.
Also yes, hoping Wish will be good. Especially since the company's animation division, aside from Ralph 2/Frozen 2, has been mainly focusing on original stories. (Ralph, Zootopia, Moana, Raya, Encanto, Strange World, Wish) Wouldn't want the takeaway to be "oh, audiences want Frozen 4, Zootopia 3, Moana 2, Encanto 2" :XD

I hope that Disney will make more Winnie-the-Pooh movies. I love all the characters like Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo, Lumpy, Owl, Rabbit, Gopher & Christopher Robin. I'm really happy that Heffalumps are being used as real good creatures ever since Lumpy debuted, but I also think that Woozles should be used a real good creatures, too, and introduce a new Woozle character for Pooh to become friends with. I think it'll only be fair if both Heffalumps and Woozles are loved and turn out to be real good toy animals and become allies to Pooh & friends instead of being imaginary, scary, nightmarish, honey-stealing creatures. I hope Disney will do a Winnie-the-Pooh Woozle movie someday. Anyway, I had always loved Winnie-the-Pooh and will always love Winnie-the-Pooh. Winnie-the-Pooh is my no. 1 favorite Disney franchise while Mickey Mouse & Friends is my no. 2 favorite franchise.

Disney had no real magic in the 70s and 80s. And now we already have the 2010s and 2020s being awful. They CAN recover, but they NEED a new Michael Eisner and Jeffrey katzenberg who believe (!) in the Disney magic. And those guys have to hire creatives - not young people who go to cal arts and post stuff on twitter and love avatar and Steven universe. REAL creatives, timeless people, who can come up with pitches where u are like: oh yes, that’s a good one! And they need variety in these stories (and art styles). If they ARENT able to find these people, then it’s over, finally.

Man they should do a live action Tarzan but done the right way I could see Henry Cavil as Tarzan and Daisy Ridley as Jane and they can also make it about Tarzan and his relationship with Clayton because as it turns out they're cousins because Tarzan's biological families' name was Clayton just like the name of the main villain of the film they could dive deep into that as well.

The 2000s had some great but also had some lackluster filmography actually. 3 Example of the lackluster ones are:
Atlantis: The Lost Empire - Despite its fantastic visuals the underwhelming plot and storyline is very much the downfall of this movie and that's why i coudn't connect with it the first time i watch it as a kid and even so today as i watch it again as an adult. I felt like the film focuses too much on world building, visuals and character designs rather than creating a cohesive storyline.
Chicken Little - Just like Atlantis is a film that focuses too much on technical presentation on the visuals rather than crafting a great comedic storyline.
Home on the Rage - A film who had unlikable characters, garish visuals and a dull premise. This movie was cringe to watch from start to finish.

I think that Disney is too scared about this new generations PC obsession and needs to stop being afraid of offending the "morally superior" children of this day and age, because lets be real - they will find something to be offended by no matter what. Disney trying to be all inclusive and not offend ANYONE is way too concerned about the threat of cancel culture. Maybe they should stop listening to people and get creative crazy! Inner conflicts are great and all but will never be able to replace those iconic villains we love to hate! Scratch the adorkable princess - its way overdone! give me an offensive villain and some original old school story telling.
