Adding some foreign power to my Southern Pacific layout I purchased this Scale Trains Museum Quality Milwaukee Road SDL39 direct from Scale Trains. When first released this locomotive had some issues. I'm pleased to say that those issues have been addressed with my locomotive.
Layout Update. North Canyon Part 2, Casting and Installing Hydrocal Rocks.
มุมมอง 29014 วันที่ผ่านมา
Significant changes were made to the right side of the north canyon. I lay up hydrocal rock castings using Bragdon molds, and I lay up retaining wall sections using weatherstripping to make molds. In this video the right side of the north canyon has its rock work finished and is now ready for paint.

Layout Update. Casting Retaining Wall Columns from Hydrocal Plaster.

The retaining walls on my layout needed something to cover the seams from joining the retaining wall sections together. I made simple molds from strips of weather stripping and cast columns using hydrocal plaster. The columns are painted with craft acrylics and given an India ink wash before installing.

    Things are progressing nicely and we’re always dependent on how many clamps we have. If ever you do it again there’s a company called cabinet parts and the sell the metal angle brackets to support the shelves and they don’t have that 45 degree angle on the bracket and they have sizes up to 24 inches.

Be careful if you go, you might have to learn how to color granite rock molds if you do and the railroad museums and scenic railways might take up a bit of your time. • @SPSteve
      @SPSteve 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I don't remember, I think that was quite a while ago. I gave that car away for free with a locomotive I sold on Ebay. All the rolling stock and locomotives I had back then are gone. If I was using acrylic paint, which I had to have been, Windex will eliminate surface tension. I stopped using Windex years ago. My painting methods have changed since back then. I haven't done any model railroad weathering other than some fading on the Bowser RS3 I repainted in SP Bloody Nose colors and a couple structures I built. I've done some weathering on my military models.

It takes a lot of time to do each spike and I'd rather not backtrack. It would be easier to judge if the track had defined tie plates, but as of now I've just been highlighting the areas around the spikes to give them some definition. I've been slowly building up my Central of Georgia Railroad rolling stock. It's kinda hard to find models for my time period and I usually have to build them from kits, i.e., Tichy Train Group. My rolling stock has to have K-brakes as AB brakes weren't invented yet. So far I've built 4 Tichy models, 2 ore cars, a 40' 50 ton flatcar and a 40' 50 ton wooden side gondola. I'm presently working on an outside braced, single sheathed boxcar. This one is a difficult build as I broke some very small detail pieces for the brakes that go underneath so it won't be noticeable for the most part. They broke trying to get them cut from the sprue. Now on to repainting my brass Baldwin VO-1000 glossy black to accept the Central of Georgia decals. Don't ya just hate to mess up a brand new model with weathering??? I still do it though. Don't think I've ever paid over $45.00 for a piece of rolling stock. Of course I do NOT do DCC so my models are a little less expensive. The most I've paid for an engine is $130.00 and I now have 2 brass diesels. You paid $100.00 for a caboose that has a tiny little light on the back??? They saw you coming. Happy railroading! Cheers from an ex-Georgian in eastern TN

    • @SPSteve
      @SPSteve 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Have you tried the Tamiya fine point sprue cutter? It is great for cutting small parts from sprues, I use them when building 1/35 armor models. Excellent tool. Haha, to each his own. I couldn't build a that caboose with DCC controlled LED lighting for $99. When I get to where I start weathering my models, I don't think any of them will get heavy weathering, and they for dam sure won't get any graffiti. To me it is worth paying for premium models, locomotives and rolling stock. They are highly detailed and need nothing but a bit of weathering. I enjoy all of the features of DCC so I am willing to pay for them. I choose to spend my modeling time working on my layout vs working on locomotives and rolling stock. I want to finish my layout eventually and I still have years of work ahead of me. Being that I am an older guy I want to see it finished before I kick the bucket. This hobby can range from a train set on a table top to a fully scenic'd basement empire. There's no right or wrong way to do it. We all do it our own way and it's all good. Thanks for watching!

    I can't understand how some model railroaders are happy with running on just flat plywood. Your scenery is the perfect "stage" to show off this incredible rolling stock! Sooo cool!!

      Thanks Mike! I have a budget for the hobby like everyone, but since I have a smaller sized railfan layout and don't need hundreds of pieces of rolling stock, I've decided I'd rather have a few really nice models than a lot of lesser quality models. The hobby is different for everyone, but that's how I've decided to approach it. I appreciate you watching!

    After I saw your review on this loco, I have just realized that I don’t have Santa Fe freight loco in my stock. Only Santa Fe loco(s) I have are the old BlueBox GP50/GP60 set waiting to be DCC upgrade. So i decided to order one myself (thanks to you). Mine has walkway steps came off. I guess they have forgotten to glue them.. no biggie. I’ll deal with them later. 😊😊😊

      Thanks! I'm trying to be patient and take it as it comes. As you know, there's a process and it can't be rushed. I took a little break and worked on the track in this area for a week, but I'm back on the canyon now. I appreciate you watching!

    Hi Steve. Apologies, I put a post on your meng t 72 video but its an old one so you might not see it. Just wondered if you want to sell an un used sprue from that kit. Many thanks. cheers

      I saw it, I replied. I didn't save any of the sprues from the kit. I never keep any of the extra parts.

    Hi Steve. Long shot mate but I was wondering if you would be interested in selling the sprue with the kmt 8 plow. I am looking to add it to another model. I live in the UK. Thanks

      Thanks, man! I'm trying to work on it a little every day. Try to keep the momentum. Even if just for 1/2 hour it is moving the project forward. I try to have that mindset for whatever I'm doing, model railroad, house project, classic car project. It all adds up. Thanks for watching!

    You do an excellent job describing your procedures! It all looks so realistic! Only one tip that I do, which is when applying the black wash, to drag a wet paper towel over the rocks from the top down to simulate rain water flows. After that's dry, a final tiny bit of white drybrushing on the rocks will create an "impressionistic 3D" aspect to help the viewer see the detail. Thanks for all that you do. Great work!!

    • @SPSteve
      @SPSteve 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Good tips. I may do a bit of oil paint streaking when I get to the point of adding greenery. I'll want to wait until the acrylics are well cured before using enamel thinner over the rocks since I'm not going to clearcoat them. But there's certainly more that could be done. I appreciate the input and thanks for watching!
