Double DF's Hauling Lengthy Northbound Freighter Featuring Exported DFT 7008
Kiwirail freight service 930 is a overnight freighter that runs between Invercargill and Christchurch, collecting and depositing wagons as it proceeds up the country.
Freight service 930, (like most of the Southland trains), is normally at maximum weight due to the large number of factories in Southland.
Here we see 930 slowly crawl into Waipahi to cross the southbound 937 freight service. Once the LE's swap over for the return journey to their respective depots the trains depart.
In October 1999 Waipahi was the site of a fatal head on collision between two freight services.

A section of rail between Gore and Charlton went through a sleeper replacement program late last year. Some were fitted with steam generator boilers for passenger use. But still useless.some of the Claytons ended in private use,places such as cement works but most were consigned to the cutters torch, only one was saved in preservation and can be seen on heritage railways around the UK.

      No problem. Y35 is normally a busy shunt. Collects tonnage from Alliance, Daiken & Fonterra. Thanks for an excellent video of operations in the Deep South! Have you any idea of the tonnage on that train arriving at Edendale? We get up to 2,000 tonne trains on the MNL, but it look’s heavier than that. Picton, MNL northern terminus.

    • @TravellingRailSpotter
      @TravellingRailSpotter หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks. Southbound trains are normally limited by length rather than weight. On this train, all the wagons before the white tarp containers were loaded & bound for Invercargill, and the remaining wagons (apart from the last two wagons (carrying the ISO tanks)) were empty. The white tarp containers are bound for Fonterra Edendale, and the remaining wagons dropped off at Edendale are for Daiken (the local Medium Density Fibreboard plant). Northbound trains are the opposite, they are normally limited by weight.

      Yes. There is still a bit of milk powder coming out of Edendale. 932 was a good size on Friday, especially after collecting the additional tonnage from Daiken. Majority of the dairy farms around Southland would have dried off by now and a small portion will be winter milking but their milk will head north for processing. One wagon was removed from the rake of wagon which was destined for Daiken, as it had a bad flat spot. Check out my video of the Y35 shunt to see them shunting this wagon into the siding.

    Is there a limit to amount of carriages each train can be made up of

    • @TravellingRailSpotter
      @TravellingRailSpotter หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes there is. The length is dependent on the length of the passing loop as alot of New Zealand is single track, with passing loops where one train can pull into to allow another train to cross. The weight of a train is dependent on the ruling gradient & each class of locomotive has a maximum weight it can haul eg a DX can haul more than a DC. For Southland it is normally around 2000T and 900 metres

    • @TravellingRailSpotter
      @TravellingRailSpotter 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When heading west (towards Otira) the bankers don't do anything, they are just on there to get back to Otira. Due to the training required to operate trains through the tunnel, there is a full time crew based in Otira to do this, and they take all trains through the tunnel. When heading east (towards Arthurs Pass) they are required due to the 1:33 gradient of the tunnel, so requires the extra horsepower to pull the train through.

And the 2 sets of doors opening straight into the carriage? Handy for the London underground, not so handy for the arctic Horowhenua wastelands in winter. Please swap it out with metlink train to Masterton.

    Don't believe so.... A DXC is just an old Canadian loco, 50+ years old, with a new Cab... Hence the C... DXB's are the same thing, without the cab, but with BrightStar traction motors.... DC's are just Slave Units, what Americans call a Power Pack.... Unmanned, but have a jumper cable attached to provide more motive power. It's a flat run to Port Chalmers so I can't see why all these locos are going there... We used to drag that rake to port with a DSG Shunt loco... Small tunnel when you get to Dog Town... I just think that the extra DX on the head was just added so the DC wasn't needed to be used for the journey to Port Chalmers. The DC would have been used for the journey up to Dunedin from Edendale though.

      Ok Railspotter... I have never seen or heard of a DC class locomotive, crewed, heading a freight train in the South Island... Also I don't get why KiwiRail would drag a dead loco all the way to Port Chalmers... Wear and tear for no good reason. All those locos would have been cut off the head of that rake, and a DSG would have taken over. It's not economical to use Mainline locos for a shunt man as they would have to come all the way back to Dunedin as there is no way out of Dogtown via Port... Dunners is the staging point for anything going North or South.

      Oh yeah, DC's don't have cab issues as they are constantly rebuilt to provide motive power... Unmanned.. You may have meant the DXC...

      @aaronharvey7523 DCP 4755 & DXC 5425 would have been on the head of 931/932 (Dunedin - Edendale). Often the evening Y22 shunt will pause in Dunedin before departing as Y20 to Port Chalmers & in the weekend the locos from 938 will heads out to Port.

    Those throaty snarling beast sounds will be missed when these eventually get retired

    DCs are great for shunting too, not the most powerful but far more responsive. The independent brakes apply and release immediately and power is delivered immediately too, unlike the DF and especially the DX. It takes an eternity for the loco brakes to come off and the loco to start moving, even after the engine notches up. I can only hope the DMs are half as decent

      Thanks, our trains are considerably smaller than what you regularly see
