  • Due to the tough working environment in the Otira Tunnel, the four ‪@KiwiRailofficial‬ DXC banker locomotives are swapped over every Sunday.
Freshly serviced DXC locomotives head over on 827W and the four banker locomotives that are due for servicing come back on 828S.
In this video we see 827W drop off a rake of flat top wagons into the ‪@westlandmilkproducts‬ site at Rolleston, before collecting a rake of wagons carrying LSM tanks full of unprocessed milk & empty containers bound for the Westland Milk Factory at Hokitika, where the milk will be processed and the containers will be filled with milk powder for export.
The four banker engines are DXC 5241, DXC 5270,
DXC 5517 & DXC 5483 and they will be busy for the next seven days hauling passenger, coal & freight trains through the 1:33 gradient 8.5 kilometre 100 year old Otira tunnel.
