- West bound coal train breaking back into daylight after spending the last ten minutes traveling through the 8500 metre, 1 in 33 gradient Otira Tunnel that opened in August 1923.
West bound freight trains normally do not require banker locomotives as it is all down hill. In the occasions where you do see them, it is normally because they have recently assisted a freight train through to Arthurs Pass, and they need to get back to Otira. As there is a dedicated Otira Tunnel crew based in Otira, it is easier to attach the bankers on to west bound trains & haul them all through together.
