after visiting their concert in amsterdam, i can say with confidence the new album was made with big performances in mind. they were so good for the concert environment compared to earlier songs.

I can say they absolutely murdered Coachella with these songs, and I went to the Atlanta concert and they killed it there too. KtL, Kick It, and especially Don't Know What To Do are absolutely incredible live.

@@Kimnojam I didn't really mean like "Western vs K-pop" style production. I was thinking more that these songs don't really fit a coherent album/ep. At least for me. They are all individually good songs, and they seem to lend themselves to sounding even better with a live band, live vocals, and the crowd singing along. I wasn't thinking about production style, more like album composition? If that makes sense.

I think Jisoo is so shock worthy because we never got to see what she’s got as a vocalist. YGE never allowed her to shine, and now with just more lines, which could’ve been easily taken by the other members, she becomes the singer she really should’ve been known as. And also more attention was payed to her in general, she really was in the game this comeback. Her and Rosè owned this album, despite it being more on the black of BlackPink side.

Jisoo's voice have the power to touch my heart. What other singer can't do.
I totally agree when you analyze Jisoo and Rose as a singer. When it comes to skills, voice concentration all that kind of stuff, most of the time Rose does it better. But for some reason, Jisoo's singing really got that magical something that touch me in a deeper level inside. There is nothing about skills or techniques. Maybe it's empathy or some kind of emotions match. That is what made Jisoo my soild bias.
jisoo has a Japanese solo song performed on concerts. If you like her voice then I recommend you to enjoy that songXD

The one thing I do not like about the album is how simple the vocal arrangement is. There is no vocal mixing of the group members, no interplay of the singers. One person sings, then the next person sings, then one person raps, then it repeats.
If you look at their Miguel song cover, that song is so much more complex than what teddy produces.
The only song where they even try to attempt this is Hope Not, which is (not surprisingly) my favorite song in the mini album.

Now, let us all pray that YG will finally give them the chance to create their own songs or at least let them involve more than just singing and some song writing.
You mean harmonies? Kick it has mild harmonies specially on the chorus, subtle back vocals you need good headphones to notice it. Other songs they have also contain harmonies too but not overdone just moderate to subtle...
casualsuede yes! This is exactly what I’ve been struggling to describe. This is the one thing I really wish blackpink did more.
@@Kimnojam harmonies is what I call vocal mixing (where 2 or more singers sing at the same time, whether to harmonize or one singer adds flavor to another singer). Interplay is more like singers having free-flowing parts, not rigid verses. One great example of interplay is Mamamoo's "1 cm taller than you", where they interrupt each other, sing/rap single lines before the next singer sings or may rap. It has a very untraditional.
I thought there was harmonizing in kick it, but listening to it closer it seemed more one singer with an auto tune sfx to give the illusion of one than one person singing.
I can’t stand that Teddy keeps writing songs for them which end without a third chorus, like he builds up the momentum right at the end and then ends the song without realizing it. He did it with DDDD, Kill This Love, Don’t Know What to Do, and Playing With Fire (although the ending does feel super satisfying with that song and it remains my favourite BP song)
This album i feel like was more vocal heavy which i very much enjoy and the songs definitely grew on me quickly

Rosé and Jisoo compliment each other perfectly. Rosie has a more breathy voice and uses a lot of her head space, adding a brighter tone to her voice. Whereas with Jisoo she has a darker tone and uses less of her head voice making it seem more “mature”. They are so different, but together their voices are perfectly balanced!

k eke listen to her Eyes Closed cover. There are different levels of breathiness, no need to be rude about it.

k eke Jisoo uses a lot more of her chest voice, which automatically makes her use less breath when she sings. Watch Tristan Paredes’ videos evaluating their voices, he’s a real voices coach.
k eke listen to them both singing immediately after the “for you”, you can see how different they are in terms of the amount of breath the use. Btw this is one the dumbest arguments I’ve ever had, not you, just this topic.
Hope not is my favourite of this EP and possibly my favourite blackpink song overall...also loved Jisoo in hope not

Good video PD. I love it when a group member is not at his or her best when the group starts, but then relentlessly improves comeback after comeback. Hyerin has done/is doing it for EXID and Jisoo's doing this for BlackPink. I'm so proud of them and it's always great to hear their talent blossom and their confidence rise like a rocket into the sky.

I wish they would give Jennie more rap lines than singing lines. Jennie is the main rapper of the group, but she hasn’t rap in more than half of their songs. We haven’t even seen all of Jennie’s potential as a rapper.
Nikki Rodriguez I mean she’s a idol rapper and not a rapper, so of course she’s only gonna rap what they give her:
Vixxan Lee her and lisa wrote their raps for sure thing and so hot. Jennie also helped with writing her solo song and helped with stay, but when people caught her saying that in the her solo diaries and in her broadcast before solo was released yg went back and changed the English subtitles. So she does write, but isn’t given the credit for it. Yg did that with hanbin because he helped write blackpink’s song whistle and didn’t get credit until later. Her company is just shit and won’t let them really write stuff or give them credit when they do.

I feel like this album kinda focus on the vocals, Jisoo and Rosé, compared to the rap line, Jennie and Lisa or those two just stand out more this era. I know a lot of people will say otherwise, but it just feels that way for me. Jennie and Jisoo kinda stood out In the D4 era in my opinion, and the songs felt kinda more fast pace compared to the songs in this album. The Jenlisa rap part really had the Jenlisa shipper inside me fangirling even harder, but I still feel like Chaesoo shined more this era.
I kind of wished they added a fifth song instead of the remix so that we can have just one more song, but I still love the remix. Also, Kick it is my favorite song from this album.

Stay was in a similar style combining western indie and pop songs (similar to songs by one direction, the vamps) but hope not was more similar to British classic rock (similar to the Beatles’ yesterday, in my life) while still keeping aspects of their musical style

I did really enjoy BP's new album. I didn't love it, but I really liked it. That said, I loved Hope Not, just as I did with Stay. I actually like their acoustic tracks the most and they wouldn't have as such big an audience as they do now if they went down this route (just because the genre doesn't appeal as widely as their current main style) but I kinda wish their main discography was like Hope Not and Stay with side tracks like DKWTD and Kick It. I just think every member's voice and style are so much more displayed and accented, and Hope Not is the first BP song that has made me really feel emotion out of their discography.
It very much seems to be a breakup album, every song seems to be like the stages of a breakup: anger, loneliness, relief/getting over the pain, hopefulness, and then change (remix)

I have to disagree with Rosé being over all superior when compared to Jisoo I personally think they’re on the same level due to the fact that where one is missing the other one fills in but since Rosé can do higher notes I do think that she is more suited to be main vocalist

For me this album took a while for me to finally like it. At my first listen my reaction was square up was better. But then FORCED myself to listen to it more then boom-suddenly singing rampapampapampapaaaaam

She’s the one who chose to sing from now on actually. I’m quite glad she’s trying something she isn’t so strong at and practicing. She does have singing potential, very powerful voice with range, just needs more training. Though i do agree, Jennie needs a mixtape along with Lisa at some point. I loved the album. Not as much as square up but i enjoyed it a lot.
I dont think this album is watered down per se but they definitely had the songs stripped down in general. Everything was a lot clearer and had more of an acoustical background to it. It seemed minimalist to me.
That being said i hope they dont lose what made them so popular in the first place. And thats being kpop. Adding such a western influence makes me kind of iffy in which direct Blackpink is going.
RM from BTS said that they dont want to lose sight of who they are and make an entire english album because thats not who they are. They are a korean band who happen to add english lyrics where they seem fit.
Blackpink isn't bts...let them go in the direction they wanna go whether it be western or eastern..
And yeah, now BTS has dynamite who have full english🙂

I think each of the girls definitely shined on a certain song. Jennie’s style suited kill this love, rose on don’t know what to do, Lisa on kick it, and Jisoo on hope not. I think the live performances actually make you appreciate the songs more and you can see the intention of each track when put in the context of their concerts.
