The beginning is suppoused to represent the sadness after a break up. She's sad and trapped in that luxury mansion and when she breaks the pink bracelet it means she has had enough and wants to break free. The pool represents the tears and she's throwing pages of the diary into it (the diary is her love story. She wants to forget about it). So that's basically the beginning. Then she finally evolves (the washing machine scene) and becomes independet.

She has no concept of vocal technique, if given proper training she could be something phenomenal to witness. But as is, she's basic (in terms of her voice). You could legit find a hundred of her (voice wise) on a street corner. She needs to develop her voice more. She has a pleasant tone, but it's being overridden by her shouting/breathing into the mic rather than actually singing. Training her voice will allow her voice to shine at its fullest potential. Until then she's going to be stuck having next to no range and completely limited vocals.

What does Gashina being a comeback song have to do with anything? If it's a comeback, it can be a played a little safer, it doesn't have to make an impact (although it was insanely popular), Sunmi already had a fanbase. I would say SOLO being a debut validates all the criticism calling it lazy and overdone. Especially from Blackpink. They were pretty refreshing in a sea of cute group concepts, but a girl crush/sexy concept for a solo artist? That's nothing special.
The teaser honestly betrayed what I thought it would sound like. I thought it would be a revolutionary, strong debut but instead, all I got was the regular instrumental beat drop for a chorus. The song definitely grew on me, but I just wish it had a stronger impact - something not too out there but definitely not just a song without an actual lyrical chorus.

Solo is not BAD but it's not GOOD. It is just pretty boring. The song is p nice but not THAT good. It seems nice on the moment but becomes boring and annoying with time because the music is just pieces of many songs we've heard before a little bit of Gashina, Heroine and so on and bam you get Solo. And the MV isn't well organized it's all over the place, sometimes it looks good but here it is pretty patchy and the transitions could've been way better. Plus the fact that Jennie's voice isn't that original when she sings I think she should've rapped more and in Korean. Her voice isn't bad, it's just not something we have never heard before. YG should've done better. He doesn't put enough work on his artists for them to be different and more original than 2NE1 and BIG BANG he just does them over and over again because they worked. I am sad that YG's quality downed. iKon deserve better, and even if I despise Blackpink I gotta admit that even them deserve better. YG played way too safe with that song and it's sad he doesn't show Jennie's full potential.

I honestly think they should have gave Jennie a song which showcases her rap rather than her singing because I really dislike her singing in “solo”. Maybe in the future (when the members would become more confident in themselves), they'll take more risks or get out of their comfort zone (a little more). I liked the MV. Seemed quite polished, wasn't controversial in any way, quite fitting for her style. However, I felt the song was a bit lacking and slightly disjointed and somewhat underwhelming. Sound production was top notch and well mixed. For me personally, I would have liked for a more vibrant chorus that didn't center on the word solo. The lead melody while very catchy and tropical felt better used as an intro/outro/bridge/break segment rather than a main chorus hook. A different chorus should have been used that featured a nice melodic hook and lyrics. The structure felt like it was a collaboration between multiple songwriters/composers from different locations who emailed their individual segments to a song producer who compiled and arranged the material into something resembling a song and not something that was planned and methodically processed. Then again, our opinions don't really matter to people within the industry as they follow a very specific formula when it comes to developing a Kpop artist and their music. It will only matter if we have some kind of name or status....

I felt like this song had so much potential because the track has a cool sound (thank you, Teddy!) but it honestly felt incomplete, & like a first draft vs. a final product.

This song just really didn't do it for me. It felt like they couldn't decide if they wanted to showcase Jennie as a poppy vocalist or a chic rapper, so they mashed the two of them together and didn't manage to blend the styles particularly well. The first verse, the bridge, and the pre-choruses all feel like one song. Meanwhile, the choruses and the second verse feel like a completely different song. There's a huge disconnect between those two, at least to my ears. I really wanted to like it, but I just haven't been able to.

I personally have grown to really like this song and have even had it on repeat a couple of times, but I gotta admit, right when I heard it the first time it reminded me sooo much of Gashina and it felt like YG was really trying to play it safe and on trend. Jennie is my bias in Blackpink and I think she shines and is strong in every area when she wants to be (vocals, rap, dance) but there could have been so much more done with this track and her talents. Her rap was particularly lackluster for me, it feels like YG knew people would be happy that she was rapping in english so that's all he went with, they didn't bother making it exceptional in any other way. And the dancing seemed pretty lazy as well, except for the end bit. Minimalistic choreo can work very well sometimes but this mostly just felt boring and, like I said, lazy (which I know is something that people complain a lot about with Jennie, she's gotten to be quite lazy with performing and I think that was showing here). I still really like the song and I thought the MV was shot very beautifully (although at times it seemed like a French perfume ad or something lmfao), and I really like Jennie's vocals in this, but they could have gone above and beyond with it and for some reason they chose not to.

Jennie_ As a blink, I somehow feels like she is shouting in some parts .Still,she is stable I guess.Her rap is charismatic yet lacks flow and intensity sometimes. In all honesty I love the quality even though it’s from a webcam and you should use it a bit more as the comment said “we care more about your thoughts than the actual video quality”.

Honestly I thought the song was pretty bad, seems rushed and unfinished. Even with the little intro and outro of the mv, the video is less than 3 minutes long

Unfortunately there are more fans than haters, more people like it than hate it. Being no1 on lots of charts, even in the u.s, does not come just because the singer is famous or hyped.
In my opinion, i like the song and i think the beats are catchy and cool. So its a matter of preference, i guess.

It's both the mediocre song and the fact that her voice when both rapping and "singing" doesn't stand out at all. She has no concept of vocal technique, if given proper training she could be something phenomenal to witness. But as is, she's basic (in terms of her voice). You could legit find a hundred of her (voice wise) on a street corner.
She needs to develop her voice more. She has a pleasant tone, but it's being overridden by her shouting/breathing into the mic rather than actually singing. Training her voice will allow her voice to shine at its fullest potential. Until then she's going to be stuck having next to no range and completely limited vocals.

i get that blackpink doesnt release much but expecting to hear a blackpink song from jennie as a soloist seems like an unfair expectation. especially when shes just dipping her toes in the water literally. and those comparing this song to sunmis gashina must remember that gashina was a comeback and solo is a debut.

Teddy was also the producer of Gashina and Heroine by Sunmi and this legit does feel like one of Teddy's scrapped works.
a song is a song whether or not it was intended for someone else. we dont know how the song came into fruition. it seems ironic to fixate on this idea that has no basis in fact when there is so much that actually goes into a song. even if these two songs were produced by the same person. however teddy is a professional pop song writer. he knows a pop song formula that works and he sticks to it. there are countless pop songs that sound similiar and get remixed into mash ups and that never hurt anyone.

What does Gashina being a comeback song have to do with anything? If it's a comeback, it can be a played a little safer, it doesn't have to make an impact (although it was insanely popular), Sunmi already had a fanbase. I would say SOLO being a debut validates all the criticism calling it lazy and overdone. Especially from Blackpink. They were pretty refreshing in a sea of cute group concepts, but a girl crush/sexy concept for a solo artist? That's nothing special.
The teaser honestly betrayed what I thought it would sound like. I thought it would be a revolutionary, strong debut but instead, all I got was the regular instrumental beat drop for a chorus. The song definitely grew on me, but I just wish it had a stronger impact - something not too out there but definitely not just a song without an actual lyrical chorus.

It's so weird, because I think she has unique sound to her voice for me even compared to other kpop artists in the industry, even tho she doesn't have the best technique. Her live is quite stable tho, imo. But I do think the choreo is too simple and she doesn't have enough stage presence (again, imo) which is probably why u also find she doesn't stand out so much.

The person that backs up the main vocal, the one that fills in gaps instead of driving the chorus. I can't name another person with Jennie's voice, but that might just be it. It seems very ordinary. Solo is not BAD but it's not GOOD. It is just pretty boring. The song is p nice but not THAT good. It seems nice on the moment but becomes boring and annoying with time because the music is just pieces of many songs we've heard before a little bit of Gashina, Heroine and so on and bam you get Solo. And the MV isn't well organized it's all over the place, sometimes it looks good but here it is pretty patchy and the transitions could've been way better. Plus the fact that Jennie's voice isn't that original when she sings I think she should've rapped more and in Korean. Her voice isn't bad, it's just not something we have never heard before. YG should've done better. He doesn't put enough work on his artists for them to be different and more original than 2NE1 and BIG BANG he just does them over and over again because they worked. I am sad that YG's quality downed. iKon deserve better, and even if I despise Blackpink I gotta admit that even them deserve better. YG played way too safe with that song and it's sad he doesn't show Jennie's full potential.

I honestly think they should have gave Jennie a song which showcases her rap rather than her singing because I really dislike her singing in “solo”. Her singing is her basically shouting the lyrics. “Love StoRAYYY”. But overall the song is just another track teddy half heartedly made and had it laying around. Also the music video I couldnt help but cringe, it felt like a commercial and her just staring at the camera acting like she’s too good by rolling her eyes etc. nothing genuine.

Yeah, her voice (especially in the first part of the song) sounded a bit forced (idk how to explain this). I wished she just used her normal voice, without an effort to sound almost, lazy (just the tone, not the person). The song is catchy though, but I think it was far from enough.
Actually, I really liked Jennie's song, it's pretty solid. Maybe in the future (when the members would become more confident in themselves), they'll take more risks or get out of their comfort zone (a little more).
I really want to see them working with another producer or other people, you know? They're not rookies and they don't need that pamper anymore. The girls have so much talent and I think they should be pushed to a point where they could take everything they can, at least until they get mature enough to compose their own songs.

I liked the MV. Seemed quite polished, wasn't controversial in any way, quite fitting for her style. However, I felt the song was a bit lacking and slightly disjointed and somewhat underwhelming. Sound production was top notch and well mixed. For me personally, I would have liked for a more vibrant chorus that didn't center on the word solo. The lead melody while very catchy and tropical felt better used as an intro/outro/bridge/break segment rather than a main chorus hook. A different chorus should have been used that featured a nice melodic hook and lyrics. The structure felt like it was a collaboration between multiple songwriters/composers from different locations who emailed their individual segments to a song producer who compiled and arranged the material into something resembling a song and not something that was planned and methodically processed. Then again, our opinions don't really matter to people within the industry as they follow a very specific formula when it comes to developing a Kpop artist and their music. It will only matter if we have some kind of name or status....
This is why I watch PD-nim! Because of his honesty! He didn’t like it, but critiqued it in an intelligent, constructive way! I 💯 agree. I felt like this song had so much potential because the track has a cool sound (thank you, Teddy!) but it honestly felt incomplete, & like a first draft vs. a final product.

Idc what anyone else says I LOVE this song. It’s a bop and now I’m so excited for the other solos. I will say I was sad when it ended though, because that ending was lit and the most lit part. I do agree though it’s very minimalistic but if you see the live stage it goes together really good. I feel seeing the dancing and stuff adds something.
This song just really didn't do it for me. It felt like they couldn't decide if they wanted to showcase Jennie as a poppy vocalist or a chic rapper, so they mashed the two of them together and didn't manage to blend the styles particularly well. The first verse, the bridge, and the pre-choruses all feel like one song. Meanwhile, the choruses and the second verse feel like a completely different song. There's a huge disconnect between those two, at least to my ears. I really wanted to like it, but I just haven't been able to.

Rose is my bias and Jennie did amazing in this song but I'm gonna be a little contrarian here and say I can't WAIT for a Jisoo solo, I'm really excited to see what she can do since she gets comparatively little play in their normal songs.
I personally have grown to really like this song and have even had it on repeat a couple of times, but I gotta admit, right when I heard it the first time it reminded me sooo much of Gashina and it felt like YG was really trying to play it safe and on trend. Jennie is my bias in Blackpink and I think she shines and is strong in every area when she wants to be (vocals, rap, dance) but there could have been so much more done with this track and her talents. Her rap was particularly lackluster for me, it feels like YG knew people would be happy that she was rapping in english so that's all he went with, they didn't bother making it exceptional in any other way. And the dancing seemed pretty lazy as well, except for the end bit. Minimalistic choreo can work very well sometimes but this mostly just felt boring and, like I said, lazy (which I know is something that people complain a lot about with Jennie, she's gotten to be quite lazy with performing and I think that was showing here). I still really like the song and I thought the MV was shot very beautifully (although at times it seemed like a French perfume ad or something lmfao), and I really like Jennie's vocals in this, but they could have gone above and beyond with it and for some reason they chose not to.

I completely agree, I love the song and all but the M/V was quite disappointing. It was lacking a lot of art direction. If I hadn’t turned on the subs I wouldn’t really get it or had known beforehand what it was about. I think they wanted a lot of things happen in 2 mins and plus seconds that’s why it feels all over the place. And when you actually watch the behind the scenes of this m/v, I absolutely felt bad for all the wasted footage that didn’t make it into the cut. They shot a lottttt man.
She used many different voices in this song. Soft Vocal, Strong Vocal, Sassy, and Rap. It’s like she’s a one-woman band. Independent... Solo.
A month later and I'm still underwhelmed by the song and the concept. Conceptually there seems they're trying to push Jennie's sultry "Boombaya" persona. I think by now we know that Jennie is more than that.
