I don't think most people have a clue how much skill and craftsmanship is needed to make specialized horseshoes from scratch. Add in the fact that the draft horse, who was easily over 1000 pounds, was constantly pulling his hoof away- mad respect.

The art of a farrier has to be at least 1,000 years old. And it’s still so vital to a horses well-being today. Bravo to all master farriers!❤

It's older even than that. The Normans had already been shoeing their horses for a long time when they invaded England in 1066.

Watching this, you can see why, historically, smiths were revered as magicians. The shoe itself is a work of art and the process of making it is mesmerising. I really am in awe of the knowledge and skills of the farrier. I know next to nothing about horses . . . but I'm learning fast! Incredible work.

@@neeadevil4840 In Nigeria, home to some of the earliest iron working cultures on the planet, blacksmiths assumed a great deal of spiritual and political importance that continues into the modern era.
Working with iron in particular is very difficult, and a population was quite dependent on a small population of smiths to make tools and weapons alike.

@@narellemacpherson9759 No better comment. Add to that these facts: 1)Hearing protection is cheaper than hearing aids.
      2) Better hearing will result in fewer falls as you age.
Thanks for the heads up. Best to you and yours.

With regards protecting hearing, that’s a good idea but I suspect the smiths at least use the sound from the ‘banging’ as feedback when creating items.

I've watched so many different videos of ppl shoeing horses, but this just made me truly appreciate the quality of someone who knows exactly what they are doing. My grandfather was a blacksmith but he died when I was only 7 and I only got to witness his work first hand once. So appreciate all the care these ppl take in doing their trade. One my other favorite farrier channels talked about why he hand makes shoes a lot, too. He said that it gives him the ability to support the horses in ways that premade shoes sometimes can’t. He also said that he prefers to stock the unmolded bars rather than lug around all of the specialty premade shoes in any size that he might need. That made a lot of sense to me and I think it’s great that you encourage your students to learn it, even if they choose mostly premade shoes in their careers.

Fantastic to see a shoe crafted from bar, been a long time since i have seen this art practiced, last time was over 50 years ago when our mobile farrier used to come and always reheat bar cut and craft a shoe , always a perfect fit, But then he never had to deal with such a badly neglected Hooves , i bet that Vanner / Cob was so grateful and a whole lot more comfortable after you attended to him , I have honestly never seen such a flat footed draft type horse, Great Work

Thank you for teaching the old ways. I believe we will need them for the new earth, back to the olden days. When I was doing my upgrading I told everybody in class that we would be going back to the olden days. They all laughed at me but the way the world is going now I see us going back to those ways. Thank you for the video. It brings hope for me

I understood hooves grew downwards but I didn't know there was a possible variant in Draft Horses, of potentially growing sideways instead. Not giving much to work with. Appreciate your explanation. In an era of supply availability becoming questionable, your students will be well prepared to be able to take on making needed materials from scratch. Thank you for you sound idea of teaching and for creating the confidence to handle things that come their way.

The horse was in bad shape too😁... gotta watch that auto suggest/ spell check algorithm... has a mind if it's own. Note: The three vertical dots on the upper right hand corner of your comment. If you tap them with your finger, a menu will appear. Tap 'Edit' with your finger and your comment can now be edited for spelling, punctuation etc. using your keyboard. After corrections are made, finger tap the blue arrow on the right. Done deal. 👍

Not only fined but warned and monitored. If they begin neglecting another animal, they should be barred from owning any animals.

Another favorite farrier I follow highlighted the benefits of handcrafting shoes, citing enhanced support for horses. He also emphasized the practicality of carrying unmolded bars over a range of specialty premade shoes. It makes sense, and I admire your encouragement for students to learn this skill, even if they mainly use premade shoes in their careers.

I have multiple horses. And I watch a ton of these videos. The one thing I can say is that our gentle giants cooperate with all these necessary shenanigans 99.8% of the time. Let’s hear it for the horses. And for the farriers who do the hard work to keep our horses healthy. No hoof, no horse.
