I am completely amazed at how well this horse is standing for the treatment. Moved around a little bit, but otherwise pretty still. Maybe he knows he's being helped? I hope the hoof grows out right and the infection clears up. Great to see a horseshoeing school with such talented people who know how and care to help.
@@rebeccasha5642 the hoof is made of the same stuff our nails and hair are made of. If there's enough hoof material they shouldn't feel anything. Like how women can use hair straighteners or curlers that use high heat and don't feel it but def notice if the tool gets too close to the scalp.

There are no words that can articulate your knowledge, work and honest to goodness care. This horse will feel a lot better hopefully soon. This was an especially beautiful freckled horse and I love freckled horses..thank you.
The owner actually commented explaining their situation at the top of the comments. They were repeatedly told a shoe would fix the issue. The infection was actually a surprise. But the horse bounced from vet to vet and farrier to farrier and everyone constantly said the same thing, shoeing will fix it
I had a thoroughbred with this issue many years ago and did not have access to a skilled farrier who could fix it. It never really healed properly as a result as the techniques used didn’t fix the split. It’s great to see that it can be fixed.
I would like to see this hoof today (August, 2023) to see if it’s healed well. This is wonderful what was done for this poor horse. Thanks for sharing this.

I am sure you have seen a worse crack, but I have not. This one breaks my heart.... watching it was difficult as I felt every clip and file. I join my thanks with Huckleberry's owner to the good people at the Idaho Horseshoeing School for what they did here and in many other videos they have put out.
Thank you for training people to take care of these horse's needs properly. It was really interesting watching you fix and medically treat it's hoof. Why though do owners let their animals foot problems get so bad before seeking a professional's help??
My Dad was a farrier for 55 years under a horse. He has seen this. I remember mom got a horse out of an auction with the same issue. My dad used one of the aluminum bands that they used to secure hoses to an engine to give the hoof support. Cut out that he needed to and rebuilt the hoof with fiberglass. It took a year to grow out.
Amazing video, watching you dremel the crack down was fascinating, when you put the antibacterial liquid in you could really see just how incredibly deep this crack was. What a lovely, genuine pony, I’ve just read the post by his owner and so pleased Huckleberry is loved and he’s been brought to you to fix. I couldn’t believe the instability in the hoof when you started to tighten the metal up, poor pony. I would really love to see more videos, as this pony’s hoof progresses in your care. 👍

This is fascinating. I have had a split on my big toenail since a boating accident in 1988. I have to keep it trimmed and filed so it doesn't snag on my sock. I sort of know what this horse is dealing with. My nail will never grow back in one piece but I hope this horse's hoof does. Cool video.
My horse just got her first hoof trim since she cracked/broke her hoof. Mind you she’s a 15.2 h paint that was 4 1/2 months pregnant when injury happened and we felt so bad with how bad her feet got, we have our horse in a month farrier schedule with daily cleaning and her feet got so bad she due early March and we haven’t been able to trim her feet since it happened. It was so deep/bad she refused to put pressure on it ripped off basically half of her hoof and cracked up the remaining pretty bad we tried but she refused to lift it or bare weight on it to get the others trimmed and we didn’t want to stress her out or chance her falling too hard and losing the baby. Her hood is about 85% healed and she has a special shoe/cast on her hoof now and she’s completely trimmed up and back on the schedule but the vet wanted to put her down how bad it was, it just shows how resilient horses can be with just some tlc and stable small pasture rest
I've seen these injuries at the horse sale often. I've always wondered if anything could be done to restore a hoof to normalcy. Thanks for posting. Definitely going to share.

Thank you for the kind and innovative treatment for that very spotty horse. I think about the pain that horse has been living with and I want to cry. As a kid my parents bought a brood mare who had a split up to and into the coronary band and we could never get a farrier to do anything but trim. Very sad we were in Michigan and couldn't trailer her to your school. It would have improved the mares life a lot.
I had horses for decades and always used Kopertox for thrush. Sometimes, I would use the old-school Lysol original brand soaks inside a rubber hoof boot. I can imagine with climate change it's getting much harder to keep horses' hooves healthy. For example, going from severe wet to severe dry, etc. I always fed my horses a good hoof supplement and used pine tar hoof dressing too. I always had the farrier out every six to eight weeks. Only one small hoof abcess in 50 years' of horse ownership. Horse ownership is a huge responsibility not to be taken lightly.
Having watched a good number of cow and horse hoof trimming videos, I gotta say that ungulates are INCREDIBLY patient animals. I rarely see a video where a horse or pony puts its hoof down repeatedly as often as this, but this looks SO painful! Granted, I'm not a farrier... but I am a cat owner. And cats' patience levels are already in the negatives when it comes to claw trimming. 😂

That was really interesting. I thought you would put filler in the crack but can see that what you did is so much better as you are encouraging the hoof to grow back together, rather than a temporary fix. I hope it worked. Makes you realise how vital it is to look after your horse’s hooves.
Nah depends on the defect, this one is thrush, it thrives in the dark enclosed space where air doesn’t circulate so by opening it, it allows air circulation to the area creating a space that thrush can’t survive in, if you enclose it with filler, it would be a more solid foot, but not for long because you have enclosed the space again and the infection will thrive and get worse, possibly deeper.. 😊
This was similar to cow hoof trimming. They are constantly talking about that all the infection has to be gotten out, killed or hooves will not be able to heal. A series of consistent followup work has the best chance of healing or adequate comfort. Best wishes. It looks like your thoughtful trim and repair will give immediate increased comfort.
You guys do amazing work. I took one of my young horses that I sold to you. It was her 1st shoeing. It will be interesting to see how this horse progresses. I am encouraging my son to go to school there.

As someone who doesn't know much about horses, it's amazes me how nice & patient they are about letting people trim their hooves.
That was my first thought. I watch a lot of cow hoof trimmings and even the docile ones still need completely restrained.
As I understand it, and I'm no expert, they are trained from birth to behave for this. Cows don't have that.

The x-rays may or may not show what's going on inside the hoof. Farriers don't do X-rays as that requires a vet to do.

This was similar to cow hoof trimming. They are constantly talking about that all the infection has to be gotten out, killed or hooves will not be able to heal. A series of consistent followup work has the best chance of healing or adequate comfort. Best wishes. It looks like your thoughtful trim and repair will give immediate increased comfort.
You guys do amazing work. I took one of my young horses that I sold to you. It was her 1st shoeing. It will be interesting to see how this horse progresses. I am encouraging my son to go to school there.
