Im new here and I just wanna say that I really appreciate the fact that you're explaining stuff as you go. Some people are quiet and that may be nice for some people, but I'm a curious person and I love to learn new stuff. Especially about animals. Great job!
I used to watch videos like this and thought the horse would be in pain during the process. But the more I watched the more I realized it’s like the horse went to a nail salon and actually was therapeutic to the horse.
Awww, poor Stanley, so happy he's on the mend, he's beautiful, and it's so nice to have a video from you Peter, hope all is well with you and your family, I'd love to see a follow up video of Stanley, such an interesting video, thank you so much Peter, and take care 👍💙🐎
Keratoma can be so difficult to detect. Good job to everyone involved in his hoof care. Stanley has a wonderful temperament. I wish him a speedy recovery. He is very friendly and likes you right well Peter.
A keratoma is a benign tumor of that grows inside the foot. It originates from the horn producing cells and causes abscesses. The hole in the hoof was from the vet going in to remove it. The precise cause of these tumors is unknown but trauma or chronic irritation are suspected. The removal of hoof horn during surgery can weaken the structural integrity of the hoof. So, horse shoes are used to stabilize it. The wound needs to be dressed until a layer of hoof horn starts to grow over it. Then the area can be filled with resin, etc. Antibiotics and pain medication are often prescribed during the healing processes. Since the tumors are benign, recurrence after removal is rare. They are typically diagnosed with an x-ray after multiple abscesses in the same location make a vet suspicious.
There you are! I missed your wonderful videos. This was very interesting and well worth the wait. I hope you and your family are all settling in with your little daughter. 🥰
Very hard work, i bet lots of farriers have bad back as they get older and wrist injuries. I loved watching our blacksmith shoeing horses when i was kid in the early 60’s.
I’ve never seen anything like it 😮 I usually watch cow huff trimming videos and was surprised at how wide a horse white line could be 🤔 I always like to see follow up videos or see all their feet shod. Thank you Peter. 👍👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
@@morgancalvi6675Enlargement/deviation of the white line may be an early indication of keratoma developing above it; I imagine that stretched white line is the area - now growing out - that was below the area operated, from where the keratoma was removed.

Hello Peter, very interesting video. I'd never heard of such a thing. I'm finding information on the Internet now. With hoof care; one needs to have somewhat if X-ray vision to keep our horses healthy and comfortable. Thank you Peter.
Hey there Peter, I hope this finds you well? 🙏 That was an unusual looking foot, you don't see one with a hole in it every day. Once again you did a fine looking job, and that old boy should be well on his way to a complete recovery after a couple more visits from you. I hope you have a good one! 🐎 👍 🇺🇲

We are fighting chipped hoof (vertical, but not spreading) and that gave me nightmares from the start. Now I have seen this! I would also think it must be very painfull, but Stanley was comfortable :) And it really seems there is nothing what duct tape can´t fix!

"One more for good luck." 🤞 So funny to hear someone else say something I say a lot myself😀 beautiful work Peter. I actually watched this backwards Pt 2, then Pt 1, but hey, no worries 😊
@@Sine-gl9lyAt the risk of answering a question with another question. All of the tissue removed from this hoof in the video was dead tissue. Would that be correct to say?
@@gorillaau What the farrier was removing was indeed 'dead' or 'inactive' tissue, just like having your nails dealt with by a chiropodist. The vet had previously entered the hoof _itself_ to remove the keratoma; this would've been done either with the horse under standing sedation and local anaesthetic/hoof block, or under general anaesthesia, as the exquisitely sensitive interior of the hoof needs to be exposed in order to remove the keratoma.
@@Sine-gl9ly That was my understanding. I think some people see the hoof trimming as cutting live tissue. No, horse and cows have long "fingernails". I have seen the same type of comments on HoofGP, who trims cow hooves. Mainly dairy cows but some bulls also.
@@gorillaau Yes, many people nowadays live a life so far divorced from animals that they can see little connection between them and us. Sheep and goats sometimes need hoofcare too - they can get infections, overgrowth and so on.
