After watching paint gun set up videos for 3 hours, you appear to be the only guy on YT that can actually explain how a gun works and why. As an engineer I’m all hung up on facts and details. This video was VERY informative. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!
I have watched, no joke, probably 10+ hours of videos on guys showing how to paint with HVLP and this was THE most useful video about gun setup by far. I think the biggest thing is that you showed what happens when the settings are too far out, which is extremely easy to do when you're new. Most guys just show "always set the gun up like this" which is hardly useful for DIYers who don't have access to a paint booth or live in more extreme climates. Thank you!!!
Instructional video's don't get any better than this one. Covered all the important areas without any wasting any time and the demonstrations were top-notch.
Thank you from the UK. I am a first time user of Spray guns and as a lady DIYer, I can honestly say that this was the most useful video online. Feeling way more confident about doing my various paint projects now.
Thank you for making this explanatory video. In 8 minutes you have given me everything I need to know to feel confident about using my new HPLV set up. Possible the best 8 minutes I have ever spent on TH-cam.
Thank you so much for sharing this video. I started working at a new pastry shop where they actually use spray guns like this to spray chocolate glaze on the cakes, and was making a huge mess on them because no one could teach me how to properly adjust the controls!!! so informative and well explained, and love how you show the difference between the low and max setting on each control. THANK YOU!! ❤
IDK if you'll ever read this comment, but THANK YOU SO MUCH for this video. 🙏🏻 I'm new to painting with a gun like this, and was having trouble with dry paint ending up all textured and pebble-y. I watched dozens of YT vids, but YOUR video SAVED my project! A 1955 GMC pickup truck I am restomodding. Especially the part beginning at 2:11. Thank you for explaining this so amazingly well! I applied an AMAZINGLY smooth, glossy coat of single-stage black urethane on my pickup's roof last night. And honestly, that's been the toughest part to paint with primer to date. This morning, it looks like black glass. Just amazing! Thank you again so very much! 💙💙💙
I want to add my compliments for a very well done video, to all the rest you have received so far. I won't repeat all the reasons everyone has found your video helpful, but they all apply. When I find a truly useful video on here ( and not all of them are certainly ), I think it is good to tell the person. Thank you for taking the time to make this !
my coworker said i need to leave you a thumbs up, subscribe and leave a comment letting you know this is the most useful video we have ever seen. Thanks
I watched like eight videos on it how to use one of these paint guns and I cannot lie yours is the best of all of them! Thank you for not wasting so much time!
Probably the best video on how to use an HVLP spray gun. I was attempting to spray lacquer for my cabinets and was getting frustrating. This video might be old but still very helpful.
Thank you so much! I just got my first paint gun and just didn't understand clearly how to use it. I've watched videos and it just wasn't clicking. I watched your video and it all clicked, made perfect sense! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm subscribing to your channel. I love how you break it all down. Made it so much easier to understand the tool.
I'm a muralist usually working with very large brushes. I am transitioning to more abstract and using this HVLP gravity feed sprayer is going to make my work much easier. I have been searching how to do a soft splatter, but never understood the workings of the gun and pressure. With your easy to understand video now I think I can do this. Thank you again for your help, and if I get this abstract job I'll send you a picture. Even if I don't, I will continue refining my spray tech. to achieve the final result.
I purchased this same kit from HF about one year ago, and finally put it to use a few weeks ago. I used the smaller detail gun to apply several coats of shellac to a few kitchen cabinet doors that I built...gun worked very well and gave an excellent finish. I'm just now using the larger gun to paint a master closet cabinet that I built...I switched to the 1.8 nozzle for two coats of latex primer (sanded between coats), and plan to spray the paint soon. For the primer and paint, I thinned using about 3 ozs of water per quart of paint. I know HF gets a bad rap, but these guns work surprisingly well...no clogs, no spitting.
Totally! I originally bought mine because I had just spent $50 on a seals kit for a high end gun, I figured I would give HF a shot thinking even if I had to toss the gun after a month it would be worth it. Some of them were in heavy daily use for over a year!
@@imagineform Just finished spraying two coats of thinned Sherwin Williams Pro Classic enamel...big gun worked like a charm with no drips or clogs, although I had to wait on occasion for my compressor to get back to pressure...the big gun just needs too much air (more than my compressor can handle). I did pick up the HF purple gun yesterday for $9 on sale, but it only comes with a 1.4 tip. I took a #50 drill bit and drilled the tip to a 1.8 tip size...I'll see how that works. The purple gun specs match that of my compressor more closely.
This is the video I've been looking for. All the other spraying tutorials on TH-cam left me with unanswered questions and wasted time. You're the best, thanks!
Bought the kolbolt version many years ago to paint my one tractor. Its been in a box and now i need to repaint my trailer and couldnt remember what knob did what. Thanks for the quick clear simple explanations of it all.
i bought a California Air Sprayer and it came with bad instructions. Your video hit it right on the head when it comes to training! It's great for a beginner sprayer. Thanks a bunch for this video!
Great information tom. I'm an industrial sprayer I spray window frames for all super markets, Mc Donald's, wickes, KFC. also ceilings, cladding on industrial units. We use hvlp turbines on window frames and while getting a brilliant finish they ain't as quick as gracos air assisted, airless pro finish
Finally a video that punches straight to the point! All the facts laid out and the "why" to each usage. Appreciate such concise video, thanks for this!
Omg thank you for this video. I work at HF and I been wanting to buy this little gun for a project I’m working on. This video is exactly what I’ve been looking for !
NOOB here. Buddy of mine just shipped me all his equipment. (7 different guns, compressor, box full of paints, and a stand.) Painted canvas, draw with paint markers, but never used airbrush. Thanks for the video.
Thank you sir, this is my first to use an spray and having trouble with job, I found your video and I will follow your instruction, so I do hope that I can fix my job
Most useful video . Most of the other ones I watched showed the box then show it setup and spray it . They don't go over any of the controls or adjustments which is what i was looking for.
Thank you. Great explanatory video. I’ve got 3 new guns I got from tcp global in a kit and I’m going to spray some old steel truck rims. I feel like I have a good chance of doing a good job now.
Awesome presentation...As someone who has been spraying since the 80's I appreciate how you clearly and succinctly you explained it all...Thanks for taking time out of what I hope is a wonderful life filled with health, love and happiness >...Doing all the stuff...:)
So with the experience you guys have what exactly is the main difference from a gravity HVLP and a conventional spray equipment besides the amount of psi pressure?
Tom you ought to be a professor, bro. Your students' passing rate would be damn high! You killed this. You've answered question I didn't know I had and ones I had but didn't know enough to properly formulate the question.
Been in the coatings industry for over 20 years and have never used HVLP only airless! Have decided to purchase and learn HVLP spraying this year. Thanks for the great videos✌🏽

Great video. Explained the how's and why's without any flashy graphics, loud music, unnecessary filler. I'm going to be spraying latex, I'll check out your other video(s) but this is very good start. Thank you
Just the video I need it … thanks for putting together this good tutorial… most people don’t have a clue how hard is to make a video with out skipping a step… thanks again I be continuing making mistakes… perfect practice makes perfect
I have a folder with this video saved in it. I paint so rarely that I always need to come back to this to set things up. Painting the iron fence tomorrow and once again, this video is exactly what I needed.
Didn't have a clue what HVLP stood for till I saw it on here - now I feel suitably informed. Thank you. No nonsense and straight to the point. Thank you. Would this gun be suitable for a DIYer looking to paint wooden furniture? Could you recommend a cheap but quality gun and compressor that won't break a DIYer's bank?
Nice video. I have that exact gun. Gets the job done for what I'm painting (guitars, not cars). I've used the gun quite a bit before but just recently switched to automotive lacquers and a little more tuning and adjustment is going to help. The water based paints I have used in the past are a little more forgiving.
I've been considering using rattle cans or an airless sprayer to paint my 1965 Ford Galaxie. HVLP just seemed too complex and I didn't get any smarter watching a lot of other TH-cam videos. THIS video is what I needed to know - how to USE the HVLP gun. Reading boring directions is one thing but seeing a live demonstration is far superior. Now I will use an HVLP gun which will give me a much better finish than any other method. Although, some guys HAVE painted their cars with rollers :)). I suppose some guys have even just thrown the bucket of paint on their cars, too, but I think I want something a little better.
Thank you man, compared to other videos on TH-cam this was super clear and super informative. I'm wanting to get into automotive painting and this was really helpful.
Hey Tom, nice video and great explanation. I am just seeing it and I noticed that the link does not go to the tool you have anymore. Could you let me know what kind of nozzle is again so I can get that type. Hopefully they still carry it or close. Thanks
All these videos go into great detail about the gun and when they start spraying all the sudden there's an air line attached but no mention is ever made of it or how the air is supplied.
Thank you for sharing tips and tricks makes it easier to know what to do to get started on some basic stuff 👍🏽I have used it a long time ago on the dash of my truck. I mixed up rustolum paint thin it then just went for it. The hardest part of the whole thing was prepping the dash so when the black paint went on it would look good. No one knew the difference when I parked it at a car show. Auto paint black for a small can was $80.00 conpaird to $8.00 can of black paint of RUSTOLUME. I wouldn't use it for the out side of it. I would buy inexpensive paint before I would use RUSTOLUME I've seen it done but you could notice it looked like a really cheap paint job on the car. You can wet sand and buff out the Orenge peel. There is a video of some guy cutting and buffing but he is a professional that wanted to show it could be done not to count in the factor of how many car's and truck's he's done in his life time.
Wow. This is the best spray painting tutorial I've seen! I wish I had found it before I painted my car, three days ago. I made the mistake of using about 28psi when the gun has a 1.4mm hole in the spray nozzle. I did that despite the manual saying to use 40psi, because some other people said they like to spray using 27-28psi or 28-29psi. They must have been using guns with smaller (maybe 1mm) diameter spray nozzles. The result was having to use the gun at about 6-10 inches away, instead of 20 inches, as in the user guide, due to the pressure being too low. The paint also ended up rather rough, so I'm going to have to use a cutting compound to smooth it down, after the paint hardens.
Thanks for the tutorial it was very helpful. I have a HVLP American turbine AT 1000+ it does not have a pressure gauge so am I limited to just what it comes with?
Use a 3/8 hose at less than 50 ft. 1/2 in hose over 50 ft. Use a high flow qd on your hose connection, also put a diaphragm regulater at the paint gun. The hiflo disconnect will improve your panel matching. 50 pound air max!!
I agree this is a very helpful video and I'm grateful for that. A few follow-up questions, if you have time: You mentioned the kit has two guns? Why is a second one necessary? When would you use one verses the other? You mentioned "overspray"..... what is that? How large of a compressor, in terms of CFPM, do you need to use with these guns? Thanks again. KB.
Thank you! In this kit there is a large gun that you would use to spray out larger things like a hood or door and then there is a smaller one that you would use for touch up or smaller more detailed things. Over spray is paint the doesn’t stick to what you are painting and winds up in the air and settling onto the ground. These guns recommend around 12 CFM. Hope this helps. Tom
So far the most informative video I found. And clearly explained. I don't want to screw up. When time and money are available, need to get the 57 D100 back on the road. Low buck build in the early 80's. First truck I owned, and was a family build. Only thing farmed out was the Fury front clip welded on for IFS. I've only sprayed primer, dad always sprayed the paint. He recently passed away, so I want to go through my neglected truck. Hopefully a paint supply shop can mix the colour. Charcoal grey with extra metallic. It pretty much looks black. A little over a year till the next Red Deer Mopar meet.
Job well done sir! Like others on here said! With little time this video was very informative! I started this job a couple years ago painting robotic dinosaurs that involved paint guns. I actually learned by messing with it myself not ever touching one before. So I decided to watch a video to actually hear someone with experience breaking it down and you did amazing! I actually learned more by you! Thanks! 🤙🏾
The paint I was using is meant for spraying and didn’t need thinning. Hvlp guns like paint pretty thin. Latex is way too thick, but can be thinned with water with mixed results.

Tom, great video. What's the lowest Air Displacement (CFM) for a HVLP you would recommend. Thanks Gaz
Oui mais on ne parle de de viscosité, qui doit être de 20 à25 s
Great informative video!
Thank you.
Should I thin out water base paint before spraying my cupboard doors?
Tom
Question!!
Can an HVLP gun be converted to LVLP? Or should i just buy a sperate gun?
I like the both extreme cases you use, to show the right adjustments. these calibrates the understanding.
Nice tutorial !!! keep up man.
Very good instructional for these hvlp setups, thank you for sharing. Answered all the questions I had
Very good expçanation. Well done. Just one thing I noticed is the cup top vent. It should be open or closed during the execution? Regards.
Open, I just keep it loose.
@@imagineform Cheers
Thanks for the crash course. This will help me improve on my painting. Great video.
Thanks! 🤙🏾
The best teacher everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Good teache thank you mister?
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Great video. I noticed no mention of paint viscosity or thinning. You poured right from the container. Any thoughts?
The paint I was using is meant for spraying and didn’t need thinning. Hvlp guns like paint pretty thin. Latex is way too thick, but can be thinned with water with mixed results.
I wish I would have watched your video before I tried to paint my part. Great explanation on the basics. Now, where did I put my sander?.....
Doing this for the second time and couldn't remember what I was doing. Truly excellent tutorial. Thanks again.
Do you have any videos explaining the best air compressors for this type of painting? Mainly referring to tank size, psi, and can. Thanks.
