    This was the perfect solution to my problem. Air was leaking back into my paint cup causing it to sputter. Tightening the nozzle stopped the air leak. Thanks for your help!

    Oh man. You have no idea how helpful this was. I'm trying to spray a topper for my pickup and have tried 3 times to spray the thing. I have had literally every single problem you mentioned!!! I've been getting so frustrated cause I spent a lot of time doing prepwork and there is runs and splotches and the paint is expensive color matched auto paint...... I have a renewed sense of confidence and will get to setting up my spray gun(Properly this time) immediately. Thanks a bunch!!!

    Thanks for this really informative and compressed video!
    I've had another really really frustrating problem, where the paint would come out in big blobs instead of a nice mist like expected. I've tried everything - air pressure lower/higher, fan adjustment tighter/bigger, adding thinner etc. but nothing would solve it. In the end, the small holes in the air cap on either side of the nozzle were plugged with old paint. After soaking in thinner and blowing out with 6 bars of compressed air, it works like a charm again. This wasn't mentioned in any of the troubleshooting videos, probably because it's so easy? So I'm leaving this here for others who might have the same problem...
    TL;DR when the gun doesn't work like it's supposed to, first thing is to really really clean it well including all the small holes.

    Thanks for these. I just watched the one about setting up the gun. You are a good teacher and organised the information before turning the camera on. I must have watched dozens of videos on this before finding your lesson showing exactly how to set up and troubleshoot for the complete beginner. I knew nothing about this and you taught me how.

      I had same problem, obviously im newish to spraying. I just ended up spraying with the cap off, and i couldnt figure out what was causing it. Hence, why i am here and this is the only info/vid ive found that mentions the problem, i didnt even know there was a vent on the top. Just gave my cap and vent a good clean, and sure enough, a smallish hole on the nipple was completely blocked.

    Thanks so much for these videos. I do wood working and have run into an issue. I have just started spraying lacquer paint on my wood projects and am running into an issue of the paint drying a very cloudy or dull whitish color. I am currently painting a frame satin black and the finish is coming out a hazy almost whit cloudy color. I have read and researched and believe it may be from the humidity that day seeing how it was raining and my shop isnt exactly sealed from the elements. Any help with thiss would be awesome or a video on cures. I can provide more information, pictures, videos, etc. if needed.

    Hi. Ever sprayed penetrol? Did it as a primer rust preventive but it was blowing back so much dust off the surface it wasn’t enjoyable at all. I normally use airless and have no over spray.
    I had it set at 36psi recommended for the gun lvmp. I’m thinking maybe being so watery I should try a lot lower psi and smaller fan?

    • @imagineform
      @imagineform  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not, but if it’s really thin definitely turn down the pressure, You will get more overspray with hvlp, 40% is common

    Hi, thanks for this helpful video. I am currently trying to spray paint my doors using high gloss paint. However, my finish is very inconsistent. Some areas are high gloss, most are not. At the high gloss patches it’s smooth (the result I want), but most areas has a matte rough texture (tiny dots) when I run my fingers over. Please advise!

    • @imagineform

      Sounds like over spray or you are spraying too dry. Get the gun a little closer and open the needle a little more. Try and keep a wet edge. Hope this helps.

    Just tried mixing 2 part paint using a graduated/scaled measuring cup. Problem came when the black paint rose up or bubbles along the edge, this covered my line for adding the second part/reducer. Any sure fire way to avoid this paint wasting mistake?
    Other videos show how to use the measuring cup however they use two rather thin, clear constituents. Thick, colored paint is much harder. Thanks!

    • @imagineform
      @imagineform  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This happen a lot, I have a box of tongue depressors and will use one to "squeegee" the side so I can see the lines again, Sometimes you even need to wipe whats left with a paper towel. Another way to do it if you have the equipment is by weight, but remember that they may have different densities. also if one of the parts is clear, add that first. And last but not least just use a second cup to measure out your second part.
      Hope this helps. Tom

  • @robertclapper1712

    Spraying general finishes exterior 450 in real hot and humid weather the finish kept plugging up the tip of the gun. I did filter the paint first ... I would stop and clean the gun ... it it would work for a wile then plug up again ... I tried thinning the finish with water (water based finish) that helped but then did not get good coverage on the project. Oh I was spraying outdoors .... in the sun ... I have found that General Finishes makes a product called Enduro Extender for Water based finishes it increases the drying time I am going to try that next time
    Now not sure what the settings on the gun were but could it be not enough paint and to much air?
    Please help

    • @imagineform
      @imagineform  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, too much air can do that, and an extender will definitely help. I have a couple water base finishes that do the same no mater what. What I do is keep a stiff bristled toothbrush near me in a cup of water and every couple minutes scrub the tip of the gun, this keeps it from building up and getting too dry. Hope this helps and good luck!

    Hello, I have a husky hvlp sprayer rated at 40 psi and I'm trying to spray primer on a work piece and it isn't really coming out. My volume knob is open almost all the way. Hi Tom,
    Great explanation on major problems.Well done .
    There's one you haven't addressed and this is when you get bubbles in your paint cup?
    I Have a ITW devilbiss CFG.Great gun for many years but recently I am having this "blow back " of air into paint cup and after thoroughly cleaning and checking seals ,I still can't fix it:(.
    Still useable but not 100%.
    Any ideas?May have missed a seal .Thanks

    • @imagineform
      @imagineform  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s normally a bad seal between the nozzle and the gun, or your air cap is plugged not allowing the fan and assist air out and creating extra pressure between your air cap and nozzle

  • @danielbuckner2167
    @danielbuckner2167 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good info. I have an older FLG with the plastic body and would still use it but it developed a "miss" where randomly every 10 seconds or so the paint would not come out even though everything seemed normal otherwise. Two dissassemblies and it still does it randomly. Any thoughts?

    • @imagineform
      @imagineform  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a tough one, I’m thinking that the seal between your tip and the body is worn, pressure builds up then pushes back, then re seals.

    Hey Tom. What about when no paint is coming out, only air, and the only way I can get it to spray paint is if I unscrew the needle spring screw and back the needle almost completly out of the gun? As soon as I push the needle back in, paint stops automatically. Just to add, when I pull the trigger, I can see the needle tip at the nozzle go back like its suppose to. Thanks a ton, if youre able to help.

  • @JamesBrown-fd1nv
    @JamesBrown-fd1nv 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Tom, I have a Home Depot Husky HVLP spray gun. I think I have the problem with vacuum as you stated in your video. The weird thing about opening the flip top cap on my gun is that the hole is the same size on the cap as the main lid. Should I drill the main lid hole bigger to allow more flow? I replaced the OEM nozzle with a 2.0mm and thinned my latex paint beyond the suggested max.

    • @imagineform
      @imagineform  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      HVLP gun are designed to spray water thin paints, like automotive types and stains. Latex is too thick on its own and needs to be thinned a lot for it to spray. If you are going to be spraying a lot of latex I would suggest an airless sprayer.

  • @lamborn55
    @lamborn55 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I bought a Husky HVLP gun and hooked it up to my compressor. The compressor is putting out quite a bit, but the gun does nothing. It seems as if a passage is blocked, but I can't figure out why, and nothing on Google was relevant. I also tried to blow through it to see if there's any passage of air, and it feels completely plugged up. It doesn't seem to be full of lube like a lot of the brands are said to be, but even if it does need a cleaning I should get SOMETHING shouldn't I? Since the manual doesn't go into any detail on this I'm wondering if it's a simple setting I'm doing wrong...but I don't think so. Any ideas Tom, or anyone else?

    • @imagineform
      @imagineform  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure all the adjustment screws are backed out some and you should definitely be able to blow air thru with the trigger depressed. Some guns have an adjustment knob right near the air inlet that can completely shutdown the air.

    Hi .
    I have air bubbling up from the gun , in to the reservoir, whenever I pull the trigger to paint .... is that normal ? I have really patchy paint (basically it’s not working! ) too , I suspect they are connected ....??? Thanks

    • @imagineform
      @imagineform  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the gun, but it sounds like your tip isn’t sealing to the body of the gun and air pushing back into the gun. Check to make sure the nozzle is tight and if there are any o rings make sure they are in good shape and in place

    Great video. Really cuts down on my problem solving when I know what the cause is.
    I have one for you.
    When I spray, I get a nice wide fan, but the paint is coming out in the top and bottom part of the fan, but not in the middle.
    I've cleaned my gun thoroughly (at least in my opinion).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

      So you can try less fan but it is most likely the cause of a cheap or poorly made gun. The little side holes in the air cap are blowing too much air or are blowing the wrong direction. This is the one place a pricy gun can win out.

    my gun head shoot air, even you release the handle. Tried tighten or loose the spring, it still shoot the air? what is wrong. It was working perfectly for years, and recently three gun got the same problem, it can not all three gun all turn bad in the same time? by the way I clean it everytime I use them thoroughly, if I clean them too much, kind of wearing them out? very frastrated! even checked the compressor, everything works just fine. Suddenly all the gun more or less all have less fluid came out, can not stop air from the nuzzle... it must something wrong. Please help.

      Sounds like maybe your trigger is getting stuck, or the plunger that it pushes. Try a very small amount of light oil on the seals and plunger

    Would you expect Paint volume decrease on a spray gun PPS system if it’s properly burped as the PPS cup liner collapses?

    • @imagineform
      @imagineform  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it decreases some as the cup collapses. You have less weight of paint pushing down and it has to suck the cup in.

    Great help. Watched today found the whole in the top of the cup blocked with paint. Pushed out with a toothpick.
    My symptoms was it sprayed great for a min then just goes rubbish.
    Had to keep opening the cup tip to get it finish the job. Couldn’t work out why then watched this.
    Is this what you meant when you said cup vent blocked etc.
    Anyway thanks man.

    Thanks Tom for another great video. My problem using the HF gun is that regardless of paint, viscosity, and adjusting until I'm ready to throw it in the garbage is that paint will not spray unless the fan adjustment is choked all the way down. I just can't get a wide spray.

      I should add that's using either the 1.4 or the 1.8 with latex thinned 10%.

    • @imagineform
      @imagineform  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Latex is really thick, even thinned 10% its a bit too think to come out of a 1.8 tip. I have a non harbor freight gun that has a 2.2 tip and that is even small for latex. If you are gonna be spraying latex your best bet would be an airless sprayer.

    • @AlbeTurner
      @AlbeTurner 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thick it is for sure. I have and use an airless but overkill on small items such as stools, toy boxes, etc. I experimented with the latex and ended up with putting 8 ozs in my measuring cup and added 2.5 ounces on top. Thoroughly mixed it. Also, using a 3/32 bit in my drill press I bored out the 1.8 tip to approx 2.3. I was then able to successfully use the gun for the latex. Consistency was that of buttermilk more or less. I also found that by adding a regulator at the gun inlet I needed 80 lbs at the compressor to set the gun for 35-40 when spraying. Due no doubt to the 50' + of 3/8" hose I run from the compressor.

      P.S. Now that I have a better handle on pressure at the gun, the bigger tip and the desired consistency range I'm going try thinning a bit less each time until I find that happy place. Hopefully in the 10-20% range.

    Hi i am starting to learn how to paint but the issue I am having is to much paint comes out at once. is that a thing? or am i not to press the spray gun trigger all the way down. Sorry for the dumb question hope you could help
    thanks

      Two things to try, turn in the big knob so the trigger can’t pull back all the way. Lower your air pressure. Other things are a smaller nozzle and more fan air.

    Hi I use the Wagner flexio 5000 and have been getting small bubbles in the dry paint. How can I correct that? Thanks

    • @imagineform
      @imagineform  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sometimes if the second coat is too soon or too wet the first coat can off gas and create small bubbles. Better timing and a little more thinner can help

    I have the inexpensive Harbor Freight Spray gun and a Husky Sprayer also, I always get a noticeable sputtered application of small paint dots to what ever I paint. Its a nice effect but I want to paint a smooth coat of paint. What is causing this.

    • @imagineform
      @imagineform  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try a higher pressure or thinning the paint a little.

    Hi Tom.
    Just had a guy paint the side of my coach with single stage fine metallic and it came out very rough like 80 grit sand paper. There is about 5 coats. There is no shine.I think he was to far away and/or to fast. Wondering if this will clean up with sanding and compound.

    • @imagineform
      @imagineform  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It might. Sometimes if you sand metallics they look weird. You could clear over it and then sand and buff. I find it’s often better to just re-spray rather then try to fix.

    I actually have 2.. but not sure if they're normal.. or what.. but one is.. when I fill the gun full of paint, it seems to run out really fast - like I can paint a quarter panel and a trunk lid and have to refill it already
    problem 2.. is I noticed when using this straight black paint; the paint coming out seems spotty*/specks and leaves little risen dots on the paint surface..

    • @imagineform
      @imagineform  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you need a smaller tip. Try going down a size if you can. Or try to up the pressure a little and turn down the paint volume a little.

    Tom I really appropriate for that, but my question is that,what would be the causes of spraying gun that is not pouring straight again, only to be flating

    • @imagineform
      @imagineform  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I understand the problem it sounds like the holes in the side of the air cap are partially clogged
