Retired 15 years ago after professionally painting for 35 years. Love these videos and truly miss being a painter. Had to retire do to cancer. You guys out there use the respirators. I started painting in the 70's so alot of shit was done differently. Peace
I'm 22 years in my friend, everything from bicycles to fighter jets & vintage WW2 aircraft here in the UK. I've always used a full face mask with breathing air connected to there own separate designated compressors but I remember the older guys (when I started) telling me about half masks & vaseline(petroleum jelly?) with a bandana round the head to keep overspray out their hair! Some health & safety isn't just a pain in the arse! 😊
We need videos showing how to paint single stage paint with small compressors and LVLP guns. Most of us are DIY guys and don't have the expensive tools
I used an ozito gun from Bunnings from the twin package and after much trial and error, I’ve gotten nice results with metallic paint of all things (wish my car wasn’t metallic paint now), I left the plastic filter in and has saved a few bits of crud from shooting into my paint
Yes! If like many of us your using a 110V compressor, you have trouble maintaining the 6CFM that the purple HF gun wants. How many gallons your tank holds only affects how long you have to wait for the compressor to catch up!
@@hobbyautobodyfun9315 that's not 100% true. The prep is important and makes a good spray job last, it doesn't make a bad spray job good. The gun makes a difference as well as technique. It's just not that cut and dry.
I'm not a painter much beyond some machine tools or spray cans but I learned more in this 11 minute video than from any other previous source. If I ever start doing much painting I'll come back here.
Old school works good job .i spray metal iron door units black, ive sprayed now 44 years and with current spray tech advancements makes ya love spraying even the more . Nice Red .
You put that screen filter in upside down. That extended stem part with the ball on the end should stick up so you can grab it to remove. You had that stem and ball was down in the gun. Not surprised you had bad results.
It is so satisfying to see the transformation. It’s addicting. I want to paint another project. But then I’m reminded of my pickup sitting in my garage, I need to sand out many runs, and cut n buff.
I use that same gun and it works surprisingly well for the cost. I simply run lacquer thinner through the gun when I'm done painting and that cleans it out very well. Every 5 or 6 paint jobs I take the gun completely apart, soak the innards in lacquer thinner and then reassemble. I've been doing this for several years now with no problems......
I remember those little s.o.b.'s helping me mess up panels when I was 1st learning how to paint. As soon as I ditched 'em, totally different experience! I don't think I've ever come across a video that talked about those gun filters, so thanks for pointing them out.
as someone that used to paint his own vehicles when we had acrylic enamel and not this clear coat stuff, i will be looking for that type of paint when the time comes. when i did my own vehicles people were amazed at the quality of the paint job and would ask me to do theirs which i did not. my ex son in law was a body man and he commented all the time on how my paint jobs were better than most of the shops he worked in but like i told him i take my time because its my vehicle and i dont want it looking like crap in 6 months like in some of his work that he did on his vehicles. like you, i used to put more than one or tow coats of paint on so it looked good and it lasted.
I'm doing the door bottoms and whole box on my 2009 pu. I've watched several of your videos and can't believe how many tricks there are. Today is the day. I feel that I can pass as a painter but not a body man. Whatever the result I thank you for the professional tips and well presented videos. It's just paint.
How funny, that little filter came with my gun, but I didn’t know where it went. I painted without it and love my finished product. I painted a semi truck with single stage paint. Thanks for the video.
Wow! I’m just now learning about painting, Glad I found this tip…I would have used that stupid little filter religiously and probably never figured out why my painting sucked. Thanks!
Great tip....I was having problems getting enough paint volume, but after watching this, I removed that little filter and it made a substantial difference in the results....thanks!
Hey Brian, great video as always. As far as I understand, these are single use filters. I've worked with Sata RPS cups, they send the cups and 2 types of filters: 125 µm for usual basecoat and clear and 200 µm for sealer, clear or basecoat with big metallics (rather special bascoats, will say so in datasheet). In those cups you can/need to apply the filter you need yourself everytime. Don't know about availability in the US though, I believe it's a German company. But anyway, to me it looks like the filter mesh is a lot broader, so it might be like 200µm filters....? Have a good day.
When the gravity guns became popular in the early 90's I threw those internal plastic strainers away, I used a quality strainer, didnt see the need for anything restrictive in the gun
Im loving the tips your offering me, I never even knew what the dials on a paintgun were for until I started watching you my friend,Im getting towards painting my dodge hemi in my makeshift paint booth in my backyard,,,ie a carport ,but after your tips im getting damn good, thanks a great deal,
Relatively new to the paint world. Serious learning curve made so much easier with content and a site like this. Type of teaching and simplicity that holds your attention and allows for awesome results when practiced and applied. Exceptional for my novice trading, thanks and Well done!
Two things, I put the little filter with the little nob stick pointing up, this makes it easy to remove when cleaning the gun. Second thing I run a 50/50 mix of ascitone and lacquer thinner over the little filter every time after use this keeps it nice and clean. I've been having good results.
I have used Harbor Freight guns for years. Thank you for not knocking them. They are almost as good as my Devilbiss Starting line or OMX and Satajet Gun. HUGE price difference. They are perfectly fine for the beginner in a garage. Buy two or three. I use one for high build primers and another one for topcoats. No real logic why I do this. I just do. I keep a third one around just in case I have an issue with the other two, which I never have. Just clean em' real good inside and out with a solvent after you unpack them to get the preservative off them. Prep work is 95% of the job. After that its spraying technique. As far a compressors go I have used them with a compressor as small as 22 gallon diaphragm type and still gotten good results. Yes, take out the filter and use a paper strainer. AND, shockingly I get the floor wet in my garage to keep the dust on the floor from kicking up.
I'm a mining equipment painter. I just put the little filter in the opposite way, and clean it after every job. I use the strainers as well, but more filtration is better for me especially in the environments I paint in. Still a good tip though for normal operations!
I like to blow the inner chambers with air before i use them because sometimes paper towels and shop rags can leave lint inside. The 3m plugs actually fits in the adapter so you can leave it there when not in use, keeps lint and dirt from getting inside the chamber. Check fan patern on paper on the wall to purge out any lint or dirt thats left before painting.
That's right, specially if you turn off your lights and use a special flashlight you will see all the places where your paint didn't cover. I agree with this guy 100%
I tried this tip last weekend after watching. However, I got this weird feeling the gun didn't perform as well when rotated upwards. I have a feeling that without the filter, paint can leave the guns chamber very easily when rotated close to 90%. With it in, you can make quick swipes with a rotated gun and it's still full of paint, even if the paint in the cup has ran away from the filler neck. Any opinions on this?
Greetings from Malta in Europe. I never sprayed anything before but your videos gave me enough knowledge to spray my dad's car exactly a year ago which came out great and saved us a lot of money. Now I have the confidence to spray my classic car. Any video on how to setup a home garage "spray booth" with filters so that i don't have trouble with neighbours? Thanks again and congrats on your baby!
I learned to throw that filter away the hard way. Last coat of clear over silver was peppered with tiny pieces of red paint. Had to do the whole job again.
I havent had too much experience personally with painting at all YET (off and on for the past 2 years, mostly rattlecan and rattle can clearcoat with some really good results), and I finally bought some guns off eastwood and they had the filter in them.. well I have been using the filter and obviously since I don't have much experience I don't expect a perfect finish, but it doesn't come close to Brians (probably gun settings honestly since I am getting used to HVLP) After I finish painting, I let the filter soak in laquer thinner with all my other parts for about 10 minutes or less, and clean everything thoroughly. I also use the paper strainers, however I am going to give it a try and take out the filter from the gun and only use the paper strainers. I have a clearcoat job in the morning and I am excited to see if this changes anything and pumped to see how nice it hopefully will be.
I ran into this issue on the weekend spraying primer using a borrowed gun. Stupid filter clogged up and sprayed like box liner. Took the filter out, nice and smooth!
I actually like using the filters in the gun. But I put them into the hopper and not the gun. It catches all the stuff in the filter from the hopper and all you do is take it out and use a air hose to get all the stuff out the filter. Run some acetone into the gun and filter and it’s good to go for the next day
Great technique video showing how gun is held and and back and forth motion and the double spray coverage with the clear coat vs the paint coat application. Thanks!
the small plaster filter from the gun appears to be a disposable/ consumable item. Why not simply change that as part of regular / maintenance cleaning
Brian, great videos, I'm new to painting. Started rehabilitating classic motorcycles a couple years ago and every paint job Iv done has been rattle cans, using 2k clear on the tanks to avoid gas damage, "learned that the hard way" but want to take the next step and use mixes and guns. Where do I start? Other than all your videos! Thanks for any help
Brian taking guides and learning from your experience is something only results can answer Biggest fan over here all in South Africa wishing you a blessed life and more knowledge, please help me and send me one of your old favourites of spray guns that is not in the usage stages .. Thank you
I soak my little plastic filter in lacquer thinner for 10 minutes before use and then blow it out and it works like new even after 4 years of use and cleaning over and over again. Then I still use my paint paper "funnel" filter from my paint supplier and never have any problem with dirt spraying out of the gun.
Thanks Brain I was about to start a project and was about to ask you if I should use the little filter ! I saw this and there was my answer ! Great videos and you do an amazing job teaching!
I sprayed some 50 ish micron glow pigment in some clear right through that little filter. It has the consistency of fine sand. The inline filter is more like a debris screen cause it ain't filtering much.
can we paint panel by panel in our home garage and achieve a good match between panels if we use the same gallon of paint and clear for all panels? The painting would be done within days but the painting panels would be out of the sun or elements. Thank you for the great videos!
Anyone heard of "vacuum" spray booth type? Where a slight vacuum , not pressure is inside a paint booth , so the overspray would be removed faster. (The seams of the structure must be perfectly sealed)
Most small commercial / industriall spray booths for small items use extraction/ suction / vacuum at back of booth pulling spray away from items and operator
Some off the body shop paint booths are vacuumed through a grate underneath the vehicle so you don't have over spray and it keeps spray from getting out of the booth when someone walks in to the booth
The pot neck strainers also restrict paint flow too much. I just cone filter the paint (basecoat, 2K solid or clear) as I put it in the pot, and also pop the lid cap. When spraying this allows that little better airflow through the lid, and it doesn't leak if you're careful with tilting gun for under edges etc only with paint flow happening.
Great videos , even though i have been painting for many years , with all the new technology out i have had to adapt to the new procedures and new paints . Your videos are a great way to get caught up with the new methods , thanks for taking the time to do these videos, they are greatly appreciated .
Yeah the added filter is fine if you clean up correctly and thin your pains to the right level. He is also putting it in upside down in the video, which must be an added pain! The little dongle on the end is a handle of course, so that part sticks out of the hole, making it easy to clean also. But nice vid 👍
So , without this plastic filter in gun, but with 2x paper filters, is paintjob better? Sorry for stupid question but me english language is very low ☹️ Brian thanks for all videos on your channel, i learning from you all what i understand, thanks so much 🤗
The gun filters are great to use as a double down to dirt and trash. The solution is to use a different gun filter or at least a clean one each time you’re spraying. You don’t leave that in there and let it get gunky and filled with dry paint. If people don’t clean their paint guns, I don’t imagine they have good paint jobs anyway! Great for heavy primers when the fun doesn’t spray out like it should you already know that tiny filter needs to be changed. It’s an indicator and something most professionals always never use yet they complain about trash and such. Learn to use it as a indicator and keep fresh ones on hand or keep the one inside clean. If you can’t spray surface primer though a gun filter with a 2.8 tip and these tiny filters you don’t have the mix thin enough anyway. It’s an indicator and a safety net.
Great video I still use the small filter even though I use the paper filter as well but I DioGuardi the in gun filter after every paint job and have never had any problems
I really like what you do and how you explain it to your audience. I’m an older painter, I haven’t sprayed in a long time. My question is when you were mixing the clear up I didn’t see the reducer. I heard you say that the product is a 2/1 mix, does that mean that the hardener has reducer in it? Thanks.
Absolute solid and clear advice 👌🏼 💯🔥. I'm new to the spray game and its clear straight to the point pointers I've been looking for! Got my sub brother. Greatly appreciated
I love my dv1 clear gun. I’ve had it since it came out. Unfortunately I use it for color and clear because I can’t afford another gun. But works perfect for both. Least for me. Haha
As a new DIY auto guy, I'm concerned about to thin paint. Instructions say to use 2.5 to 3 mils per coat. I've ordered a gauge to try to learn how thick my coats are. How thick is the paint in this video after the 3 coats. I will be removing that filter from now on because I always filter my paint. Thanks for always putting out good videos.
Great video Brian. But not everyone can afford DV1 or Iwata WS400. I noticed most channels shows and talks about how to then they use these expensive guns to show very good jobs.
The good guns are really needed though, big wide even fan, cheap guns just won't cut it for long, and wear out very fast too. Devilbiss GTI Prolite TE10 setup, very nice gun. Iwata Belaria W400, and this puts clear on nicely too. I also just the Devilbiss DV1S a short while ago, the spot gun with 1.0 and 1.2 set ups, fan almost as good as the larger guns, and perfect for small spot blends, single panels, bars etc.
@@Ovunix Hi Stephen . . . anything the paint travels over / past through the gun eventually wears, paint is quite abrasive (especially primers). Generally fluid tips & needles get most problems, air caps not as much I feel. Some guns have plastic parts in the aircap area, gaskets, etc, these last very little time. Best guns use high quality material to resist wear, and as few parts as possible, no gaskets or plastic parts. A good gun can last years with good cleaning and care, but some painters buy new guns every year, they get used that much. Usually in the shops where a painter just paints all day, cars are prepped ready, masked, paint matched (all done by others), the painter just paints cars, one after the other.
I ask an auto body guy about those little paint strainers you are supposed to use in the paint sprayer and he told me pretty much the same thing you said. He said don’t put that thing in your paint sprayer just throw it in the trash and forget about it.
Appreciate your tips. Enjoy all your lessons. Thanks so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to produce these videos. Thx for educating us.
Great video Brian, thanks for explaining how to use that pps system. When I tried using that it didn’t go well, leaked horribly and it was probably user error like you have said in a previous video.
They used to have filters that went over the tubes in the old suction feed guns (where the paint cup screwed on from the bottom). I never used them. instead, I always poured the paint through a separate filter first. It's similar to when you're in the kitchen making a cake and put the flour through a sifter to get any little nubs out of the flour. Note: NEVER put automotive paint into your cake batter!
I was always thought the the paper or gun filter gun filter was 1 job/day uses we bought them in boxes of 1000 or use a paper filter each cup fill lol we only used about 50 filters each month some cheaper flake just had to be paper filtered going in the cup as they would block the gun filter lol. my painting is fine but I will give it a shot when I paint my truck in the next few months as it will be a heavy flake & candy ..thanks for sharing
Why the preference for the AkzoNobel brand Sikkens? I'm just curious. I have no prior experience with it but I read an interesting article on Wiki. I understand they resisted an acquisition attempt by PPG. Excellent channel, btw.
I am gonna start painting and I have looked at countless tutorials on how to set up your gun your paint how to paint but one thing I can't find is what is the minimum and maximum working pressure you need and it is always glossed (ignore the pun) over so would be good to see a video on how to do that as well as the base settings of the gun as they never explain why they have the settings they have
Some paints don't do well with that filter in the gun. Learned this with water based alkyds painting signs. Not enough flow as you point out. Getting all the crap out of paint can be a challenge
great video but i have a question...im a part time painter..i want to ask about what the diffrent between LVLP gun and HVLP gun..im using 150L compressor

Brilliant, clear speaking and knowledgeable
Great videos , even though i have been painting for many years , with all the new technology out i have had to adapt to the new procedures and new paints . Your videos are a great way to get caught up with the new methods , thanks for taking the time to do these videos, they are greatly appreciated .
Thank you great video, will apply your techniques when I paint my boat.
Sorry for stupid question but me english language is very low ☹️ Brian thanks for all videos on your channel, i learning from you all what i understand, thanks so much 🤗
Yes the little filter restricts the paint
@@PaintSociety woow , great info, thanks so much brian for next good tip 🫡
Great video I still use the small filter even though I use the paper filter as well but I DioGuardi the in gun filter after every paint job and have never had any problems
always learning something from you!! Thanks once again!
I learned a lot from the shop video s...thanks...it's awesome... Working
I really like what you do and how you explain it to your audience. I’m an older painter, I haven’t sprayed in a long time. My question is when you were mixing the clear up I didn’t see the reducer. I heard you say that the product is a 2/1 mix, does that mean that the hardener has reducer in it? Thanks.
This clear doesnt require a reducer in the mix.
Thanks I learned a lot with just that video. Easy to understand very well explained. Greetings from Maine
Absolute solid and clear advice 👌🏼 💯🔥. I'm new to the spray game and its clear straight to the point pointers I've been looking for!
Got my sub brother. Greatly appreciated
I filter the paint before putting it in the cup old school style.
Brilliant video it was very satisfying watching that clear coat go on and your a brilliant teacher Thankyou
I love my dv1 clear gun. I’ve had it since it came out. Unfortunately I use it for color and clear because I can’t afford another gun. But works perfect for both. Least for me. Haha
Love the videos thanks for the Links in the description
As a new DIY auto guy, I'm concerned about to thin paint. Instructions say to use 2.5 to 3 mils per coat. I've ordered a gauge to try to learn how thick my coats are. How thick is the paint in this video after the 3 coats. I will be removing that filter from now on because I always filter my paint. Thanks for always putting out good videos.
RS onweb The information is wrong, paint thickness is measured in microns.
@@lesskinner8588 What part of the gun wears out, the tip opening itself? and is it due to the grain of the paint passing through at high pressure?
@@lesskinner8588 ahh okay that all makes sense to me. Thank you for the info, it really helps!
Man I can't wait to see that beautiful Milano Red Si it's going to be worth a lot of money
Hi, I'm new to using paint guns. Just wondering - Why are you using the word "flash" instead of "dry"?
Just STUNNING💯👌
Thank you! 😊
looks great !
I've always wondered, is the trigger released for each pass, or completely inside all the time? (best method) (often difficult to see in video)
Great video Brian, thanks for explaining how to use that pps system. When I tried using that it didn’t go well, leaked horribly and it was probably user error like you have said in a previous video.
Awesome Video, thanks.
I had a feeling those gun filters were screwing me up. Thank you!
Great demonstration.
Very well done! You made this video easy to understand and was entertaining to watch the whole video, thank you!
Great explanations and highly instructrive video’s. Can’t wait to try!
Hi Brian, another great learning video. I've always left that little gun filter in, while etch priming aluminum. I would leave it out from now on 👍
Gracias desde colombia suramerica
Thanks again for another great video 📸
Thank you.. Great job
Why the preference for the AkzoNobel brand Sikkens? I'm just curious. I have no prior experience with it but I read an interesting article on Wiki. I understand they resisted an acquisition attempt by PPG. Excellent channel, btw.
super finishing Great
I am gonna start painting and I have looked at countless tutorials on how to set up your gun your paint how to paint but one thing I can't find is what is the minimum and maximum working pressure you need and it is always glossed (ignore the pun) over so would be good to see a video on how to do that as well as the base settings of the gun as they never explain why they have the settings they have
I love it... you do it simple and easy to learn
I really appreciate your videos. I’m repainting a horse trailer and would appreciate a video of spraying over your head. Thanks-Bill
Thanks Brian 😊 you the best 👌
another awesome one Dude !
Some paints don't do well with that filter in the gun. Learned this with water based alkyds painting signs. Not enough flow as you point out. Getting all the crap out of paint can be a challenge
Thank you so much for this video سپاسگزارم
great video but i have a question...im a part time painter..i want to ask about what the diffrent between LVLP gun and HVLP gun..im using 150L compressor
Brian, can you do a video on some good masks/respirator options for painting at home safely? thanks and love the videos
Sure
