For the compressor you want to try and match the min CFM. Remember at 10 psi the CFM goes up on your compressor more than you think. Don't waste your money see my link. My wife and I spent well over an hour hand painting one side of an 1800mm X 1200mm garden trellis yesterday. We have four panels to do, and with two coats that works out to at least 16 hours of back ache (from leaning over to reach the centre) and the finish is not flash because it is so hard to avoid drips. This morning it suddenly clicked that I have a 3hp 50 litre compressor in my shop and easily enough airline to reach outside, so no need to pay a lot of money for an electric spray gun. It was a big bonus finding this video on my favourite woodworking channel. Plus I'll be able to spray paint finish on my projects. Today keeps getting better. While I was typing this comment a courier turned up with the Kreg router table insert and supports I'd ordered from Amazon. We heard last week that the USPS was stopping post to New Zealand and some other countries because of the lack of transportation, so I was worried that my router cabinet rebuild was going to be put on hold. I originally built the table top with laminated kitchen worktop that revealed itself as nasty chipboard when I cut out the hole for the insert. It was full of voids and socked up finish like a bottomless pit. Since then I have discovered Acacia hardwood benchtop which is solid and I can double thickness it for a 52mm solid hardwood top. I made the original insert out of 10mm actetal plastic which whilee being the stiffest of the machinable plastics, still distorted when tightened, so this time I am using the Kreg insert which I have a lot of experience with. So I am a happy camper right now. If only it would stop raining. :-(
You deserve a TH-cam award for best video on how to paint with HvLP gun. Thank you for this. Super informative. To the point. No nonsense. Great job. Thank you again. Couldn’t ask for more. I’ve never left a comment like this b4 but you deserve these words and much more
I think it would be worthy of note to mention that as you widen the fan, the material coverage will be less. So as you widen (or narrow) you fan size, double check your material coverage.
Thanks Jonathan. I am proficient with Syphon feed spraying, but wanted to get into HVLP for a while now. Thanks so much for giving me some basic direction. God Bless U and Yours.
Anyway you can talk about air compressor as well please. What type, how big and what to know about it in order to have a good quality finish for furniture. Thanks
I second that. Just bought a husky 60 gal compressor and want to know what I need to do to it in regards to like what type of filters / air cleaners you use
I love hvlp I use the Devilbiss that takes a zip lock bag inside the cup so you can spray in all directions and never have your gun skip from losing suction plus clean up is easier
Complete newby here. I'm scared to death of spraying the finish coat on the hull of my little sailboat that I have worked on so hard. God knows I've watched dozens of videos on this topic, trying to decide how best to achieve a smooth, shiny finish on my hull. This video is the best one, by far. Thanks for your enthusiasm, directness, humor and for taking the mystery out of the process of using an HVLP spray system! Well done!.
Nice informative video, good work. I wonder if a LVLP gun would work. Guess I will give it a try. I like how you put on that paint suit and wore gloves, very safe and a good idea.
Just FYI on the compressor vs sprayer air usage: most compressors rate themselves on SCFM (Standard cubic feet per minute, ie, 1cfm at 14.7 psi absolute), and most air tools use CFM at 60 or 90psi (~75 or 105psi absolute) to make their product look good. So if a compressor says it produces 5 SCFM at 60psi, it's perfectly matched for a tool that consumes 1 CFM at 60psi. A standard Porter-Cable 6-gal pancake compressor produces 2.6 SCFM at 90 psi (0.36 CFM of 90psi air). Your air sprayer specs out at about 5 CFM at 45psi (20 SCFM). So that compressor is going to need something like 8 seconds to recover for every second of using that sprayer; not unworkable but not ideal. It's dumb and confusing, and has lead to many an undersized compressor.
What formula are you using to calculate this? I'm trying to decide on an appropriate size compressor to get for doing HVLP spraying as a hobbyist or to just get a small compressor and a turbine system.
Great timing on this. 2 quick questions / clarifications: 1. Can you use regular latex paints in these sprayers? If so, mixing recommendations? 2. Will a 6 gallon pancake compressor work?
New to your channel today, some really good stuff. My wife and I started a business in our home recently, as I was forced to take an extended leave from my profession, manufacturing process engineering, and production, management, and I am not the type of person to just sit on the couch doing nothing. So, we combined my prior experiences, with my education, and a particular passion of mine, music and musical instruments, with my wife's passion for art and color, as well as her work experience dealing with customers and the public, and we are building handmade, custom, electric guitars and basses. We are at the point now where we are looking at options for improving our finishing methods, and are looking for information regarding the differences, the pros and cons, strengths and weaknesses, in comparing HVLP with LVLP systems. We only have a small compressor and we are only finishing, at most, 3 instruments at a time, often just one instrument. We build all of our instruments using only high quality exotic and domestic hard woods, tone woods, many of them being highly figured pieces of these woods. So we will almost never be using paint, and opaque coloring, covering up these extremely beautiful, and extremely valuable, pieces. Applications of stains, dies, or other pigments for coloring, will usually be done by hand, or with a small airbrush kit that we have. The HVLP or LVLP system would be almost exclusively used for finishing of the instruments, like an application of a poly, a lacquer, etc. Any advice, Insight, or information, would be greatly appreciated! Thank You
I could spend hours answering this. Best advice I can give you is work hard and stay true to your passion. Sounds like you're on the right track. Cheers
May need to give an HVLP a try. I've always used airless... yes, really. Hot lacquer, pneumatic stirring on a 55 gallon drum. Of course we would turn out a high volume of cabinet, church trim....
I've only used a sprayer a couple of times, but a couple of things I noticed. First don't spray it in the garage. Everything gets coated in a fine dust. Second, don't use it for finishes such as stain that need to penetrate the wood.
Thanks for another great video👍 I was looking for a quick rundown on an HVLP sprayer and whose video was #2 in the queue.....the 60 second tour was perfect, just wanted to see if there were any subtle nuances I needed to know. Thanks for all the work you put into the videos, your love of the craft is apparent!
Anyone contemplating the Fuji Q4 or similar, I've had mine for a year with the suction feed T70 gun. Really enjoy using it. I have recently started using the 3M pressure pot and find it a great addition.
I have the mini 4 and I love it. Can't imagine using anything else now that I've got my hands on it. I use the 3M pot too and it's a mandatory accessory in my opinion, being able to spray at any angle and never worry about the consistency of the paint feed is just so nice. Cleanup is a dream. It's one of those buy one cry once purchases. Yeah I spent $1500 on my setup. Yeah, I also have perfect finishes on everything I make for the rest of my life. I doubt these things wear out to the point they can't be rebuilt. I've sprayed everything from boat epoxy to super-thin poly and even painted a living room because I could. You've got to deliberately search to find things you can't do with a Fuji setup.
Thanks for such an in-depth overview on technique. I have a Fuji mini mite 4 and really enjoy using it #FujiSpray, amazing system. i am about to finish my garage cabinets and trying to hone my technique. Once again thanks for the video.
Timely video, just started looking into upping my game with regard to hvlp . I use a cheap all in one unit from Aldi for spraying shellac and it works well but my wife would like a big bathroom unit made and some new kitchen doors which I would like to spray with probably 2 Part paint
Any thoughts on a HVLP + compressor setup like this, versus the Earlex/Homeright Super Finish Max? I'm definitely more interested in the simplified form factor of the Super Finish Max, and it seems to work well for a lot of folks...
I do small job cornhole boards and flags what size of sprayer should I be looking for I use polyurethane material mainly water base a little oil based.
Do you have any specific recommendations for spraying stain through an HVLP? I've sprayed Lacquer and had great results but I would love to stop brushing stain.
So how well would this work for a production setting? Our company uses water based polyurethane. We push out 75-100 end table stumps(3 coats of poly) and 20-30 tables (4 coats of poly. coffee tables, sofa tables, benches, and dining tables) a week. Just wondering if this would be practical or would we have to refill the hopper an obscene amount of times
Not shaking the can of product really only applies if you are brushing it on. The strainer (filter) eliminates any bubbles. Even if they made it to the gun, they would be atomized. If they made it through the gun and the filter, they would pop in the air. If they didn't pop, that's a superbubble!
Love your videos you have a great delivery of the information. I had a question about compressed size. I imagine using an HVLP you can use a smaller compressor. If this is a correct assumption how small a compressor would you recommend.
There were many typos in my previous comment. Do you have any tips for making Alkyd Day Glo oil based paint stick to wood ? I tried primer. That didn’t work. I’ll mix the paint three parts paint, and one part paint thinner. I am thinking that maybe the paint dries in mid air before it even hits the word because it has been atomize to be such a small particle once it leaves the gun . Just a theory. These are for indoor blacklight golf courses in rental houses. They will be getting a lot of traffic. The paint literally brushes away like powder even after drying overnight.
You should mix your material in a mixing cup then strain it into the paint gun. Since material that sets for a while can pile up in the bottom of the can and then stick to the bottom of the mixing stick you just used to stir it you don't wanna stick the stick back into the paint gun.
Please could you help me how many layers of lacquer can I spray the maximum amount sometimes I have seen they have a really beautiful glass type of finish on top so please could you tell me how many layers is maximum
Hm, the item you've chosen (a bookcase or whatever it is with a bunch of cubbies), presents what seems to be a pretty significant spraying challenge. How do you spray the inside of all of those sections evenly? This is a glaring omission from the video.
Jonathan, I've watched this video now several times, very informative and great content! One question, currently I'm building a dresser with seven drawers and was curious to know if you prefer spraying the lacquer on the long pieces of the drawers (edges half-rounded) prior to cutting, gluing and assembly or after the drawers are assembled? It seemed to me spraying first has less chance of marking up the raw wood and the joints will still have unfinished wood for the glue to hold. Thanks!
Am I the only woodworker using a pressure tank to spray finish? All the same features, air, fluid, fan adjustment. The cost is a little more but it holds more material for bigger projects.
Great video, these days most are using more water based paints for woodwork and furniture builds, have you switched or still using oil based paints and thinners. If you have used them and still applying the paint with the HVLP, what would be your advise on thinning and spray needle tip size for painting. Very informative video and currently building a spray booth like yours! Appreciate if you got the time to get back to me.
Jonathan- Is there any advantage to lvlp? I can’t find your exact kit on Amazon, but this is what I found…AEROPRO TOOLS R500 LVLP Air Spray Gun with 1.3/1.5/1.7mm Nozzles & Air Regulator, A610 Paint Guns Automotive, Car Paint Gun Sprayer, Paint Gun for House Painting, Car, Furniture, Varnish and Top Coat
Air supply is a major role in deciding what spraying system to use. I myself have settled on an LVLP system (www.homedepot.com/p/SPRAYIT-LVLP-Gravity-Feed-Spray-Gun-Kit-SPRAYIT-SP-33500K/204343921), as all I'm coating are small pieces and are in small runs/batches. Something I could run with the pancake compressor I already had, as making the leap up would mean spending a few hundred more to meet the 7SCFM most HVLP guns call for. I will make the jump after I outgrow the capacity of my current set-up, at that stage, I'm jumping over the HVLP spraying requirements and going straight to sandblasting range as that is another crucial aspect of spraying, looking at minimum 10-15 SCFM. That way all bases are covered. Another option for those with small compressors is Powder coating. You can do that with a pancake compressor. Also, Cerakote, which works with the sprayer I linked above. Now, you may be limited as sandblasting is needed for a lot of powder coating, but there's a mini blasting gun that works for small things like fixtures, jewelry, etc.
so as far as the compressor that you link to in your description do you ever have issues when you're spraying something larger that you have to wait for the compressor to catch up to have pressure in your gun?
Do you have a preferred go-to finish you like to use when spraying your finishes on? Love your videos btw man. Been watching and subscribed a long time!
Hey Jonathan. How those guns relates to the electric ones? You can also make the same adjustments? About the tip size, you can adjust to deliver small amounts of material even with a tip like 2.6mm?
Very timely video, thanks. Question, have you tried spraying a one coat exterior sealer like Cetol through this? I could not find a viscosity of the sealer product cutsheet. Any recomendations on sealer for outside furnature? Keep up the awesome vids.
I’m spraying water based poly and feel like it needs to be thinned. It coats the material but sort of in larger droplets than I expected. Does anybody thin their water based clear coats? Just use water to thin? Thanks!
Great video! Thanks for posting. For myself this is very timely as I’m within a week of completing a standing desk that I intend to spray finish. Quick question, any recommendations on the air compressor? Thanks again!

Very useful information. Thank you
Nice. Thanks for sharing man. 👍🏼
What about using a LVPL spray gun for water based poly? What’s a decent sized compressor and tip?
Any thoughts on a HVLP + compressor setup like this, versus the Earlex/Homeright Super Finish Max? I'm definitely more interested in the simplified form factor of the Super Finish Max, and it seems to work well for a lot of folks...

I do small job cornhole boards and flags what size of sprayer should I be looking for I use polyurethane material mainly water base a little oil based.
Great video!
The kit comes with diferent nozzle diameters. 1.0mm, 1.4mm and 1.8mm. Which one do you use for different finishes?
Thanks
can you interchange nozzles size between hvlp/lvlp in gun the same brand ?
Do you have any specific recommendations for spraying stain through an HVLP? I've sprayed Lacquer and had great results but I would love to stop brushing stain.
Really Good video. But, how about maintaining these guns? How do you clean these guns after each use? Thanks, Al

Not shaking the can of product really only applies if you are brushing it on. The strainer (filter) eliminates any bubbles. Even if they made it to the gun, they would be atomized. If they made it through the gun and the filter, they would pop in the air. If they didn't pop, that's a superbubble!
Hey, I could use that truck tail gate in the back ground. Want to get it out of there?

If I bought the spray gun kit on amazon would a pancake air compressor work well with them?
Love your videos you have a great delivery of the information. I had a question about compressed size. I imagine using an HVLP you can use a smaller compressor. If this is a correct assumption how small a compressor would you recommend.
what type of pressure settings? Compressor output? spray gun regulator setting? thanks Jeff
So I’m trying to spray polyurethane out of my hvlp gun, what psi should it be set to and do I need to thin it out?

Great info. Ty so much!!
I didn’t know you can get mini water filters! 🤔😳👍🏻
is it necessary to thin stain when spraying? is it good to use a Japan dryer to thin rather than paint or laquer thinner?
Helped alot thanks!!
Will a 6 gallon air compressor keep up for smalls?
And to get it smooth do you put a gloss on after you paint
Do you thin down the water-based poly with additional water before spraying?
Great video Jonathan Katz Moses, do you still do you still like the HVLP kit would you recommend it? Thank you.

Great job!
In a different video you recommend a mixture of 15-25% thinner. On this video, you used 50% thinner. What factors were considered to make the change?
Is this lvlp system still available? The link did not work for me
What compressor do you run
Would you be able to spray paint through these HVLP sprayers ? Looking to paint a cabinet
How do we know how much to thin our finish? My dad is looking to get into this and wants me to do the research.
Check out the MSDS sheet
so as far as the compressor that you link to in your description do you ever have issues when you're spraying something larger that you have to wait for the compressor to catch up to have pressure in your gun?
Do you have a preferred go-to finish you like to use when spraying your finishes on?
Love your videos btw man. Been watching and subscribed a long time!
Hey Jonathan. How those guns relates to the electric ones? You can also make the same adjustments?
About the tip size, you can adjust to deliver small amounts of material even with a tip like 2.6mm?
Do you have to sand between coats ?
is that Sean from Foureyes??
How much material does hvlp gun waste?
What compressor were you using here? The one in the video looks like my HF 8 gallon.
Very timely video, thanks. Question, have you tried spraying a one coat exterior sealer like Cetol through this? I could not find a viscosity of the sealer product cutsheet. Any recomendations on sealer for outside furnature? Keep up the awesome vids.
Look up the MSDS sheet
I’m spraying water based poly and feel like it needs to be thinned. It coats the material but sort of in larger droplets than I expected. Does anybody thin their water based clear coats? Just use water to thin? Thanks!
Jonathan Katz-Moses
Thin with water. Also sounds like your setting may be wrong. Maybe too much fluid
Jonathan Katz-Moses yep, I added a bit of water to my mix this morning and it went on much better! Thanks!
Is the spray booth necessary when using that HVLP kit? Or just doing it outside would be enough?
Great video! Thanks for posting. For myself this is very timely as I’m within a week of completing a standing desk that I intend to spray finish. Quick question, any recommendations on the air compressor? Thanks again!
I linked the one I use in the pinned comment
Can you spray epoxy resin with hvlp guns?
Probably once at least. But you better get your money's worth out of the gun in the first 45 minutes
Hey Jonathan, would you still recommend this is in 2021? Anything else come along that’s a better suggestion?
Lvlp for small compressors 💯🤠
