Engine vibrates the cabin. Cabin is cheap and unluxurious. Engine is loud and intrusive. Low unsupportive seats. Ride is not smooth. Another nice looking vehicle RUINED by Akio Toyoda. ( AKIO TAKE YOUR “NO MORE BORING CARS” BS AND SHOVE IT UP YOUR A$$!!!!🤬) I’ll take a Tesla model x, Rivian suv or a Lucid Gravity over this.
Some of the criticisms are ridiculous. I feel like Consumer Reports has unrealistic expectations. They expect vehicles to have ability in everything and sacrifice nothing.
What I felt is it’s going after the Defender customers instead of the GX existing customers. I am pretty sure they will replace some interior panels (with different colors) in future and that will make GX more luxurious and outstanding but for now it’s good to take a risk. It may take 3-5 years for the next update but they will fix it whatever feedback they get. I never thought last GX 460 update will be this great.
I agree. I think the lack of leather on the dash makes the car look overly plasticy. All luxury high end cars have contrast stitched leather in a lot of these areas and the lack of it makes it look cheap. I think they should have kept their toyota engine engineers and hired a new team for interior design because the lack of interior options is the only reason I won't buy one of these at the msrp. I might buy one cpo used in 2025 or 2026 but certainly not new because the price point at new has better luxury options to choose from
I don't know why people always have the wrong expectations. This car is meant to be a performer, one that can haul and offroad while still being luxurious. If you want peak luxury, get the LX.
It’s actually slightly different. Uses different turbos and it’s made in the Japan plant vs USA. The part numbers for the bearing assembly are different.
You should compare it to the previous GX460. That one does not roll around anywhere near as much as all versions have the KD-SS levelling/sway bar system, while the new one only has it on the Overtrail model. Also the previous gen GX460 is much more luxurious inside - just check out the headliner and sunroof cover. No mention of the hood vibrating at speed?
Before it is stated that the side mirrors are narrower, I would challenge you to get a tape and actually measure them. I have an FJ, and its mirrors also have this truck-like mirror shape. I measured them to confirm they are actually the same width as my Tacoma.
The GX seems like a premium version of the Land cruiser not a Lexus product. Between the UX and the TX, it seems Lexus is watering down their premium brand.
This is the third review that I've seen that has not mentioned that the second row seats recline. I can tell you this thing is very quiet at least in the overtrail plus trim. Power is very linear it's very smooth and me myself I like the interior the look of it.
Are you going to tell people about the massive engine problem. You know when it blows up at 800 to 30 000 miles. And that once bought the dealer will not buy it back or allow you to trade it in.
Everyone of these I looked at in Texas, has $3K - $4K of port add-ons that one cannot get rid of. This was the same when I bought my IS500 and it drives me crazy because this is just a cash grab from Lexus on a vehicle that is already $75K plus. How about they let their customers choose the add-ons they want instead of being force fed options. Very poor decision on Lexus part and one that might stop me from buying a GX.
Pros: exterior design, 1 mpg less than 460 Cons: No more naturally aspirated, bulletproof, proven V8 No standard KDSS Average Interior, with normal quality materials No thanks.. i'm keeping my 2020 Luxury GX460
How come you didn't mention the engine issues? It's a beautiful car, and I was thinking about buying it, but I'll pass for now because it's missing: 1. Third row seats don't have enough room. Why not give it the same third row seats as the TX 2. When third row seats are up, there is not enough cargo room.... look at TX as an example. It has 20 cubic feet 3. Hate the bump in the center seat 4. Toyota Sequoia has more luxury material than GX. I would feel like I'm being cheated 5. KDSS should be on all trims
Another good review from CR.. I think that the driver's visibility in all directions is super important to safe driving - and to see out the windshield for overall driving enjoyment. I am surprised that it seems that more people are not complaining about the large black box at the top middle part of the front windshield. 2:10 .. (This unfortunately is the same in most newer vehicles.) I know that is the housing for the safety monitoring equipment, but it also blocks the driver's (and passenger's) view out of the front windshield .. especially if you are taller (like me - about 6' 2"). I think they should find another place to put the safety monitoring equipment so that the driver can use the entire windshield to look out - for safe driving. I trust my own eye sight MUCH more than relying on safety monitoring equipment to drive safely.
We just got ours and the best Lexus we have ever owned. Lot better then the previous model all though we also liked that one just not as much this 2 row over trail in white pearl
I don't understand the comment on expecting more luxury for the price. Have you considered what you get for 90 or 100K on Branco? GX 550 at even 90-100 is an excellent deal...
Try opening the driver side window while going highway speeds…I have a dangerous window wobble on my premium plus..brought it to Lexus service and told me that’s just how the car is
I'm actually looking at the GX as the right mix of luxury and off-road capability. I intend on getting it into some dirt, and this interior looks easier to clean than those with piano black everywhere and touches that are more suited for boulevard cruisers. The LX is more luxury and less capability, and the TX is more a people mover than I need at this point as an empty nester. The GX Overtrail+ is just right.
As commenters have said Lexus vehicles, 4Runners, & Land Cruiserers are made in Japan. The engine issues Toyota HAD are not design issues but a manufacturing process issue from human error in the United States. Americans left metal debris in motors That's not a design issue.
At that price point compared to the prior GX - not nearly enough luxury, the reliability of the prior v8, you need to go a few levels up to get climate controls in the rear, much more body lean in the new model.
Latest Sequoia is not an option for Canada or any cold area - as it has only part time 4 WD. What a terrible decisions to make such change. Also trunk area is terrible in it. We had previous gen of sequoia and loved it. Now only GX550 Overtrail + checks all the boxes for us ….
Why do these so called car reviewers bring up the lack of cargo space behind the third seats on ANY of the mid-sized SUVs? Duh. They are ALL LIKE THAT. If you need more space, get a bigger, longer SUV. Shocker!
Thanks for the neutral initial review not pure hype. Good looking truck with cheap interior and only two way lumbar support, no 3rd row option for the overtrail + trim, I mean option, for us with children.
Lexus, like any good car company, researches the problem, then comes up with the solution then recalls to fix the issue. They are not manufacturing new luxury vehicles that will have the same problem the 22' and 23' Toyota Tundra and a few Lexus LX600's had. So it isn't "crazy" they didn't mention the "exploding engine" when absolutely zero GX's have had a problem.
Stop sale and recall! Do not drive with driver's window down as airbag may not deploy if needed. The factory in Indiana is closed for over a month to fix problems.
As commenters have said Lexus vehicles, 4Runners, & Land Cruiserers are made in Japan. The engine issues Toyota HAD are not DESIGN issues but a manufacturing process issue from human error in the United States. Toyotas have been the most reliable vehicles since they started & Americans get online spewing false information based on lack of research. Toyota has never had any major issues they have not fixed out-of-pocket and yet Americans proudly buy American manufacturers' vehicles, who have never stood behind what they manufacture, unless forced by the government.
If I needed a car with 3 rows that was going to get a lot of use I’d just buy a minivan. This third row seems pretty impractical to me and although this SUV looks great, my guess is that the vast majority of owners never take their Lexus off road. I’m amazed what people with pay and sacrifice to maintain an image. I know a lot of people like having a vehicle with capabilities that they never use but like to know that should they need them they’d be there. I’m the opposite, it feels like a wast so have a vehicle that has a lot for parts and features that you never use. Just seems wasteful to me. But I’m sure this is the perfect vehicle for a lot of people, just probably not for the majority of people who buy it.
The engine is a potential problem of this truck.Same as the Tundra, Sequoia and the Lexus LX, it shares engine with. I will give Toyota 2-3 years to fix the issues before considering buying this vehicle.
Wouldn’t want the boring all black interior and the 14 inch display doesn’t matter compared to a 21:9 aspect ratio 12 inch screen when the bottom is permanently just replacing far more functional physical climate controls.
The GX is a complete let down in my opinion. For the price, it just doesn’t feel special enough. If you don’t plan on taking it off road, there’s so many better options.
The narrow upright mirrors are for off-roading. You don’t want a lot sticking out, hitting trees, rocks… etc. the gap between the mirror and A pillar is so you have visibility when off-roading. These Consumer Report reviews are pretty much useless.
Consumer Reports targets your average consumer for typical everyday use with their scoring methodology. You will notice the Wrangler is one of their lowest scoring vehicles, because they prioritize ride, handling, noise, etc instead of off-road capabilities. If you are purchasing a vehicle for off-road use you should check out TFL Off-road or some other source for reviews.
Way too big and tall for how little room you get inside. And cuz everyone is buying this for the school pick up line and Costco, high risk to run over a kid rather than over boulders.
No mention of ALOT of other negative reviews and problems on this new overpriced 4Runner…I meant GX. Plastic fantastic is a name this GX has gotten from many reviewers. It’s not a Lexus, it’s a Toyota priced as a Lexus. Vibrating hood, windshield angle prone to chips and cracks, lack luster interior losing the luxury feel, no wood trims but instead wood lookalike plastics lol. Road noise, body roll, vibrations and the biggest of them all, the potential catastrophic time bomb of an engine it shares with the Tundras waiting to go off 💥, and the list goes on. The only thing this GX has over the older GX is the more modern exterior looks, that’s it! Smart people will stay away from this overhyped overpriced vehicle. Only the one’s with more 💰 than 🧠 will buy this just to say I have a new GX.😂
Bad fuel economy, overpriced, cramped interior for rear and 3rd row seats, no luggage room when 3rd row seats are up, bad exploding engines on these new Toyota/Lexus vehicles, cheap interior feeling for $70 k… Not worth your money.
Zero info. about ride comfort, quietness, long distance seat comfort, acceleration, throttle response. This is why I don't subscribe to Consumer Reports...it does not provide even half as much information as the Consumer Reports of the 1960's - 1980's.
They absolutely provide that information in the detailed reviews on their website. But this Lexus hasn't yet finished their battery of tests, so this is more of an initial impressions (hence the title "Early Review."
I think CU has lost touch with most of America. Do most Americans buy $71,600 SUVs? If they do, can they actually afford them?? Maybe the top 5%?? I gave up on CU because of this.
The X7 doesn't have a spare tire. That ended that one for me. Test drove a Lexus GX550 yesterday. It was awesome. I am likely going to wait and buy a Luxury Plus as it has all the bells and whistles this model on the video doesn't have. It feels more luxurious because it is. This premium version is not as nice, but the Luxury Plus kills it.
after this video, I'm unsubscribing from Consumer Reports TH-cam channel. If I want to watch just car reviews, there are plenty of other professional car review TH-cam channels.
Dude, poor review! As a guy who’s worked in automotive engineering I’m surprised that you never talked about the powertrain. The Tech doesn’t drive the car and all you car reviewers focus on the minor things like Tech but not the most important thing which is the powertrain! I have a 2023 GX460 and love it! The V8 is awesome and the vehicle drives really good for a truck. I wouldn’t buy the new 2024 model due to the new V6 turbo charged engine, it’s too new and will take Toyota a few years to get the bugs out and Kiazan it. This is a major redesign here so it’s going to have its issues.
Car jouinalists exhaustive analysis of second and third row seating is boring. These additional seats are most intended for children and an occasional adult. If they want to best evaluate these two rows, then bring children as props. If a driver is an multiadult chauffeur then buy a van.
As commenters have said Lexus vehicles, 4Runners, & Land Cruiserers are made in Japan. The engine issues Toyota HAD are not design issues but a manufacturing process issue from human error in the United States.
No mention of ride quality, road/cabin noise, acceleration, braking. 8+ minutes of what?
Engine vibrates the cabin. Cabin is cheap and unluxurious. Engine is loud and intrusive. Low unsupportive seats. Ride is not smooth. Another nice looking vehicle RUINED by Akio Toyoda. ( AKIO TAKE YOUR “NO MORE BORING CARS” BS AND SHOVE IT UP YOUR A$$!!!!🤬)
I’ll take a Tesla model x, Rivian suv or a Lucid Gravity over this.
Their “early reviews” are abbreviated. You will get all that information in the full review.
They do that a lot now. I have no idea why.
Road noise is such a problem on i95 in the south like Florida… roads are rough for downpours we constantly get
Learn to read dumb-dumb: it says early review and has not gone through the battery of tests.
Some of the criticisms are ridiculous. I feel like Consumer Reports has unrealistic expectations. They expect vehicles to have ability in everything and sacrifice nothing.
What criticisms for example?
No kdss on most models = body roll and sway. Gx460 has hardly any body roll on corners so pleasure to drive without motion sickness.
I can’t believe the price of this thing. I was honestly expecting it to be more!
I wish it was the same price here in Canada... This price is for the Land Cruiser here, the basic trim I guess
More price or more features?
😂 we’re shocked at 70k now?
That’s what I felt getting into the new GX. I have a 2023 GX460 and sitting in the new GX it doesn’t feel as luxury as the old GX
I'm sure that they intend for those who want more luxury to go after the more expensive LX.
Agree.
I agree. I think the lack of leather on the dash makes the car look overly plasticy. Is this the same motor in the new Tundra that is having a lot of issues?
Doesn't the GX have the same engine as the New Tundra , which has had issues?
It’s actually slightly different. Uses different turbos and it’s made in the Japan plant vs USA. The part numbers for the bearing assembly are different.
Tundra engine made in US, GX made in Japan. You know if it’s made in the US it’s going to have quality issues.
this is the engine with a recall correct??
Would you do a break in oil change oil analysis to see if the GX550 has potential engine failures like the Tundra and LX600 with same engine?
Best consumer report review ever. No b/s just an honest review. Thank you. Hope this format replaces the normal awful reviews.
You should compare it to the previous GX460. Between the UX and the TX, it seems Lexus is watering down their premium brand.
what about the recalls on that six-cylinder turbo?
The interior looks more Toyota like, than Lexus like. Doesn’t look like a good use of interior space.
This is the third review that I've seen that has not mentioned that the second row seats recline. I can tell you this thing is very quiet at least in the overtrail plus trim. Power is very linear it's very smooth and me myself I like the interior the look of it.

no
*very nice review, thank you* ❤
@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD come on man... you've been doing a lot better review of GX550 than CR.
Are you going to tell people about the massive engine problem. You know when it blows up at 800 to 30 000 miles. And that once bought the dealer will not buy it back or allow you to trade it in.

Good tips. Generally I wear sub $1000 watches when I travel. G shock, PRX, Nuun, Hamilton, Unimatic etc.
Heard there are problems with the engines ? Main bearing burning out
As commenters have said Lexus vehicles, 4Runners, & Land Cruiserers are made in Japan. The engine issues Toyota HAD are not design issues but a manufacturing process issue from human error in the United States.
Americans left metal debris in motors That's not a design issue.
is the Land cruiser better in some ways
At that price point compared to the prior GX - not nearly enough luxury, the reliability of the prior v8, you need to go a few levels up to get climate controls in the rear, much more body lean in the new model.
Why is the audio so strange
Add an actual dip stick ?
went to a dealer and bought like everyone else? no dealer is selling you until you have preordered months ago
For all the things you dislike about the GX you can buy a TX, LX or Toyota Sequoia.

They mention it because someone may be leaning towards getting this. There's nothing wrong in letting people know
How can they remedy that? They can't. Not without making the vehicle longer, and more expensive.
@@VE-qb2mbExactly. It's like the back seats in sports car. They are there only for insurance purposes.
Thanks for the neutral initial review not pure hype. Good looking truck with cheap interior and only two way lumbar support, no 3rd row option for the overtrail + trim, I mean option, for us with children.
3 children fit in middle, if you have 4 kids you are in a small minority, that’s why 1 version of this does not have third row!
TBH. Do people really expect a Lexus to feel like a BMW, Mercedes, or Audi... when it comes to luxury interiors?
You'd be surprised
Perfect timing!
Someone who designed this ,he disappoints us
Crazy that he didn't mention the exploding engine! I hope they get that fixed soon, cuz I really like this rig otherwise.
The GX isn't part of the recall. Only Tundra and LX for '22 and '23 model years.
This isn’t effective. That’s old news
The interior materials could be better. Diamond quilting, more colors, and maybe a dark wood.
This new GX seems targeted to younger buyers.
Premium plus is a lower trim. The luxury and luxury plus has nicer interior.
For 70,000.00 USD, just buy a 2021 LX 570 or Land Cruiser. It's larger, more luxurious, and built better!
If only Lexus offered a huge SUV like a Cadillac Escalade ESV…what idea!
LX600?
I agree and better options for the interior.
And who off roads a Cadillac?
Love it, but I’m also loving the refreshed 2025 Tahoe. This GX is just too much money for what it is.
Stop sale and recall! Do not drive with driver's window down as airbag may not deploy if needed.
The factory in Indiana is closed for over a month to fix problems.
This car is not made in Indiana.
The GX is made in Japan at the Tahara plant.
😂 Exactly Lexus is not built in AMERICA.
Great video! Opened the TH-cam and I was greeted with this video, I am looking to buy this vehicle and this video definitely will add to the decision.
But I’m sure this is the perfect vehicle for a lot of people, just probably not for the majority of people who buy it.
Im going for this, or the land cruiser
No leather on the dash makes this a no go for me. Hard to be a luxury vehicle with a plastic-like dash
I read that it doesn't have rear AC, is that factual?
The engine is a potential problem of this truck.Same as the Tundra, Sequoia and the Lexus LX, it shares engine with. I will give Toyota 2-3 years to fix the issues before considering buying this vehicle.
I like this vehicle. I might upgrade from my Tacoma for this thing.
Is this Micah’s dad??
Wouldn’t want the boring all black interior and the 14 inch display doesn’t matter compared to a 21:9 aspect ratio 12 inch screen when the bottom is permanently just replacing far more functional physical climate controls.
Don’t like turbos. 7 time Lexus owner here. Love the look though.
The GX is a complete let down in my opinion. For the price, it just doesn’t feel special enough. If you don’t plan on taking it off road, there’s so many better options.
Last yr model was outdated big time especially interior. People hate change that people you have keep up with latest greatness technology.
Well, off-road capability is the reason to purchase this vehicle. If you don’t, just buy a Kia.
very nice car
Very good review. Stayed til the end because I was mesmerized by how the presenter looks so much like Jeff Bezos.
Lexus cars, in general, don’t feel luxurious anymore.
The narrow upright mirrors are for off-roading. You don’t want a lot sticking out, hitting trees, rocks… etc. the gap between the mirror and A pillar is so you have visibility when off-roading.

Very nice SUV, but not sure who this was made for.
Most off road model but no off road testing.
It’s a Luxury trim not the Overland Trim and no KDSS
They bought the Premium+ not OT
Over 71k plus TAX. Not worth it
Way too big and tall for how little room you get inside. And cuz everyone is buying this for the school pick up line and Costco, high risk to run over a kid rather than over boulders.
If only it had pre-collission & pedestrian sensors. 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Lexus GX 550 beside reliability nothing good about it for $70000!
DO NOT TRUST THAT ENGINE!
No mention of ALOT of other negative reviews and problems on this new overpriced 4Runner…I meant GX. Plastic fantastic is a name this GX has gotten from many reviewers. Not really a review
What about the recall on that stupid motor
In another word, it feels cheap inside
Bad fuel economy, overpriced, cramped interior for rear and 3rd row seats, no luggage room when 3rd row seats are up, bad exploding engines on these new Toyota/Lexus vehicles, cheap interior feeling for $70 k… Not worth your money.
Zero info. about ride comfort, quietness, long distance seat comfort, acceleration, throttle response. This is why I don't subscribe to Consumer Reports...it does not provide even half as much information as the Consumer Reports of the 1960's - 1980's.

Nice, but lacks "wow" factor/features
thumb down, if that's your job, go find another one
This interior looks like a Nokia dumbphone compared with other posh EV interior.
Unacceptably bad fuel economy. No mention in the review. CR needs to make sustainability a more prominent part of their road testing process.
From a model 3 owner lol
Have you seen their top cars for 2024? 😂
With the price not as luxurious as it be a lot of dull moments inside!….more plasticky all around….
I think CU has lost touch with most of America. Do most Americans buy $71,600 SUVs? If they do, can they actually afford them?? Maybe the top 5%?? I gave up on CU because of this.
Call me a weirdo, but I’ve been waiting you all to review this vehicle and the BMW X5 or X7. This kinda puts me off the Lexus.
Worthless "early review."
Wow such a downgrade. Cheap interior :(
your reviews are just too slow, early reviews are useless. you charge all that money and it takes you years to review anything
Car jouinalists exhaustive analysis of second and third row seating is boring. These additional seats are most intended for children and an occasional adult. If they want to best evaluate these two rows, then bring children as props. If a driver is an multiadult chauffeur then buy a van.
Nah, 70k for this... For "Toyota reliability"? Pass on this one.
So basically just an SUV with okay visibility. Nothing special at all.
Bad engine
As commenters have said Lexus vehicles, 4Runners, & Land Cruiserers are made in Japan. The engine issues Toyota HAD are not design issues but a manufacturing process issue from human error in the United States.
Can I buy one here in Mexico?
