We start with a thorough technical review under the hood. Then we take a tour under the all new GX550. Then a tour outside, inside, some things we like somethings we don't and an answer to a very important question. Did the GX loose the magic of the old one?

Yes- the GX 550 has earned an A in the appearance department, but otherwise it is a lackluster model. Gas mileage is the same as the old 460, the V6 is very complex and difficult to work on, and the interior looks like a 4Runner!

Agree. I would never have considered a lexus before due to their garish, in-your-face styling, but this looks purposeful and feels fresh. The designers had an idea in mind and executed on it with conviction.

    AMD
What a breath of fresh air you provide the DIYers. Your candor and honesty in reviewing Toyota/Lexus vehicles along with your pragmatic maintenance instruction is the very best. After much thought and research I purchase two new GX460s in 2023 and I could not be happier with my decision. I never plan to off road these vehicles and knowing I purchased the final iteration of the 460 with all the updates incorporated into the last model was the key factor in my purchase decision. Over the years I have owned four Landcruisers (three 80 series and a 100 series) actually still own a 96' 80 series with 85K in showroom condition. I have always done all my own basic maintenance including fluid changes and brake/rotor replacements. Sadly, it appears the complexity of all newer generation auto design will make that more problematic going forward. Again, well done my friend and blessings to your and your family from Atlanta Georgia
    Cheers

    • @edmundcharles5278
      @edmundcharles5278 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

Yes, I made the same decision as well. The Lexus sales staff informed me that the 23 was the last year of the V8 and that the new GX 550 was going to have a very long wait list time and that could be up to a year or more! One test drive in the GX 460 sold me!! I loved the ride, the comfort and the plush interior. I was coming off an FJ Cruiser, so this GX was a big step up for me, I loved all the old school features and if I wanted power and acceleration I would have purchased a Lexus LC, an SUV is not a sports vehicle and the way traffic congestion is proceeding, going faster from on e stop light to another is stupid and inefficient.

hahahahaha bro neither of these vehicles are "cost effective" to own or "cheaper" to repair... TRUST me on that. The GX460 requires deep pockets exactly the same as this newer model... even for the simplest things that you "think" should be inexpensive.

@@yamafanboy Huh??? The 1UR is well known to be a reliable and trouble-free engine. • @FJBandFkMAGA

The coolant valley leak, air suspension, and intake pump(if not cared for from previous owners), are all expensive repairs. Just because it’s a Toyota Prado with more features doesn’t mean it’s doesn’t cost more to repair, it definitely does.

Considering all of the mechanical improvements to the GX550, particularly the Overtrail, over the previous model I can forgive the interior being less “sophisticated”. I have never personally been a fan of Lexus wood trim, and the more utilitarian looking interior with nice materials is more my speed than the GX460.
Considering the new Land Cruiser isn’t really any less expensive if you get any options and the GX is just better equipped for similar cost, I think the GX hits the nail on the head. If a buyer wants more luxury the LX600 is waiting, if they need a 3rd row and have no interest in off roading the TX is the answer. I think the GX being focused on all terrain use is a good spot, they might as well just make Overtrail the only trim as far as I’m concerned and offer it with or without a 3rd row.

The Land Cruiser is reported to be in the $50K range while the GX 550 can range up to $80K, so there is a big spread in price here! The bigger question s: why buy a GX 550 when you can get the 4Runner cheaper and not worry so much about denting up the more expensive GX?

Regarding GX460: talk about the torque curve of the engine.
That's what matters in towing also, Why this engine make so little power is because lower
power in a larger engine reduces cylinder heat and pressure while increasing the duty cycle of
the engine, That's why your low power GX460 can run at high BPM with no issue, The heads are large high port headsg and the lower aluminum intake has a tunnel ram design. All this for only 270 Lbs of torque, This is why this engine does not break. Regarding new GX550, it will be facing high temperatures in smaller block. Simple physics tells you that to move easily 2.5 tons, you need a bigger engine, not smaller. We shall see, but I doubt that this 550 have the same long-term reliability built in as an old 460 had.

I agree with you 100% but you also have to take into account that fact that Lexus 460 is ancient and since then times have changed. There is a lot of R&D going on in Toyota in terms of metallurgy on a daily basis. I also have my doubts about this new engine but am open minded. Perhaps they are using even more durable materials. After all back in the day an F1 engine was 3000 CC V10 and they were blowing up almost every race. These days they are 1.6 litre v6 and much much much reliable due to advancements in CFD metallurgy etc.

I am open minded and do believe in Toyota engineering department BUT... The whole concept of globalization is to reduce cost to the manufacturers and make people spend more on everything. They are pushing for the disposable things with less repairability or no repair options if possible, their moto is "you will own nothing and will be happy about it " Toyota must follow this path as well, unfortunately. The reliability and longevity is not number one goal anymore with no one.

I drove back home 14 hours , 8 hours during night time and I was able to turn off the small lcd panel and dimmed to the minimum the dashboard lights, just this makes the older design cars driving at night more enjoyable and stress free.
