Never buy the first generation of anything. Engineers are not that smart nowadays to predict and figure out potential problems even with all of the clay models and wind tunnels and simulators provided by Toyota. The engineering sucks. $72,000 and your hood bounces in the wind like it about to fly off? That is pathetic!

Great video because the issues you take about would never be discussed in any press review. Only by living with the vehicle can you talk about the real issues unique to the car. Range is a real problem. My friends MBZ GLE 450 gets 500 miles per tank. Hood flutter is totally unacceptable in any Lexus.
Yeaaaaaah. The AC/Fuel tank issue sucks. The console was enough to put me off mentally for not having buttons, but that combined with fiddling around on a screen while driving in Texas summers with a new born is a no go for the price. I may wait for the hybrid, if I don't get something sooner. I appreciate your videos. Thanks.
Thanks! If your local dealer has one, I'd say definitely check it out. I'm ultimately very happy with the GX550 8 months into ownership. Some of these issues are resolved and I will post an update video before the year end
Hood flutter is due to it most likely having an aluminum hood. Bump stop adjustment can resolve this. If not try adding fuel line hosing inside the rubber seals that make contact with the hood. One runs horizontal along the back and two vertical along the sides. This helped tremendously with a vehicle I had hood flutter with.
I’m looking at the 2027 model before I dump $69k into a vehicle. I have the time to wait. They have 1000s of engineers. Why do we always have first year production issues with ever vehicle ever made? Ridiculous!
@@brucey5585the 1995 model had issues. I owned this model for 26 years. The 1997 model was better engineered. The resale price shows this for the 1997.
Thank you for addressing the size of the fuel tank. I have not heard anyone speak about that yet! That is a huge miss for me. I do not want to be stopping to fuel up more than I already do.
Glad I could help! Yeah expect mid-200s for range in the city - the 2 gallon difference from the last gen GX460 is a bummer since the mpg is quite similar
Toyota depends on 70 years of reputation and a legion of toyota fanboys to keep buying their latest toys even though evidence shows all toyotas (outside pre-24 4runner), all post 2022 Toyota medium/heavy duty vehicles have been performing worse than a NISSAN. Who would have thought. 2025 Infiniti QX80 > GX550 > LX600 (top 3 japanese tanks). But Nissan uses GTR engineers to make the Infiniti and have 20+ years of experience using V6 with Turbos. Toyota does not unless they integrate Hybrid system (car gets too complicated with long term reliability issues).
thank you so much for the in-depth review on this vehicle! The actual livability was what I've been looking to find out and you answered most of my questions! congratulations on your ownership.
Thanks for mentioning the range, I was planning on "upgrading" my 460, but I won't if it's not 400 miles of range. My 4 runner only gets 310 miles of range and that is my biggest gripe with it.
That’s where it’s going to be terrible, but honestly I wouldn’t want to tow a lot of weight any distance with a suv vs a truck though but it’s def going to be terrible range, prob get 12 towing a load, so 12x18 would be range
The KING of towing and the jack of all trades SUV is a DIESEL Tahoe/Suburban Z71 off road (2025 off road models will have Diesel Engine = 30+ MPG on the highway, bullet proof reliability, 50% more room than current Lexus lineup), lockers, etc. It will get the job done and made in Texas (just like Tesla and Toyota Sequioa/Tundra). @@vm2003 modern diesel is the king of primadonna maintenance and breakdowns with that rube goldberg aftertreatment system. Consumers who want to tow are better off with a big block V8 gasser.
The fact it doesnt have rear AC on every trim level is wild. In Phoenix, its a deal breaker if my car doesn't have separate rear AC for the kids. And my Armada has the hood flutter issue too. Nissan service dept said its because they use a thin lightweight hood to save on weight. For the price of the car, I'd rather have a more solid hood...

In Australia on the 300 series they will glue your hood under warranty, they clamp and glue but then you can see the dimple where they clamped it.... 300 series has bad hood flutter.
I remember I saw another video talking about the TNGA-F platform, not specific to GX550 but in general (I think it is talking about Tundra or Sequoia..). It mentioned the frame is narrow than the older one and thus caused the reduced size of the fuel tank. This might be more difficult to fix than it appears.
@@NorthoftheWallGarage a common solution is to remove the under-body spare wheel and replace it with a secondary tank. You then either need to carry a repair kit or similar, get a rear-mounted carrier, or hope.
But when you pay premium for a vehicle one expects it to be well thought out and researched that as owners we don’t need to find solutions at our cost tbh, I find that Lexus/Toyota have done loyal customers a disservice.
Hood flutter should NOT be present in this Lexus GX, period. Luxus falling down in quality, along with bridge bearing issues in this motor -- buyer beware.
I have a 2024 Subaru Outback Wilderness and my hood does the same thing, I have to stop the car and check making sure the hood is close lol, will be shopping on our GX in a couple a months.
@NorthoftheWallGarage i noticed the air vent “issue” on mine as well. The air barely hits my face while driving unless it’s cranked all the way up! Even when i play around with the settings under the Climate control. Seems like the air system has a mind if it’s one with this model.
Really appreciate your insight as I was looking at buying one this week, I think I’m convinced to wait and see if fuel tank is corrected in future years and hopefully get a hybrid.
Please let us know when you upgrade the gas tank and the process. My 2010 FJ Cruiser’s hood flutters also and has for the last 290k miles. I don’t even notice it anymore. Maybe it is just a Toyota thing. Shouldn’t happen though.
I planned on replacing my wife's GX 460 with an overtrail we ordered over a year ago. Price, hood flutter, side mirrors, less roomy interior made me decide to pass on the new GX. I didn't even know about fuel capacity! That's a big deal too. In order to get the same comfort/features we were looking at an 83K build. I mean, Lexus can't have memory seats in a standard build? Come on! Loved the power, but that was about it.
@@hipetwa their are zero issues with the GX 550. these are built in Japan and no 2024 especially the models built in Japan have any recalls or expected to have recalls. The 2017 Lexus LX sedan has this engine and Toyota says it's been tested to a million miles.
These are actually pretty good cons to be complaining about honestly. I'm going to have to hide this video and see if my wife has any of the same ones......lol! So far were 8 days in of ownership. OverTrail + in White.
0:13 I had a 2006 Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 Hemi, and it had a 16 gallon tank. I never even thought about checking that feature when I bought it. It definitely is an issue on long road trips if you're traveling in an area that has towns far apart. My father has a 2020 Prius, and the back seats have no vents for the ac. Here in Las Vegas, that's a problem. Are you concerned about the engine with all of the issues they're having with the Tundra's ?
There are console mounted vents, just not in the roof (in the overtrail models). I could see how in a hot climate it could be problematic. Not concerned about the engine issues at all - seems like it could be due to a manufacturing defect and I don’t believe the gx550 has been affected based on what Toyota has found. Even so, there’s a long powertrain warranty to cover me!
First, let me say thank you for posting these videos. Your videos have presented the clearest picture of what any future owner might experience. Toyotas have had hood flutter for years . I’ve heard folks complain about it on the new Grand Highlanders (ie, TX) too. I’ve gotten used to it on my 4R, but it’s pretty chintzy, especially on a $75-80k vehicle. The more I see videos on these new GX the more I see it as a souped-up 4Runner for twice the price. From purely a utility standpoint, it’s a truck that’s basically the same size, gets basically the same fuel economy, etc. Besides ever-larger dash console screens (which I could care less about) I’m not sure what makes this so compelling. That said, good luck with yours and hopefully you will continue to post updates.
Thanks! Agree with most of your sentiment here, however the LC and new 4Runner didn’t appeal to me as I didn’t want to go down to 4cyl hybrid. Some folks in here are nervous about the TTV6 but so far so good
You have to adjust the round rubber bumpers under the front of the hood. My 4 runner did the same thing from the factory but a quick adjustment fixed it
Thanks for the honest review! I have a toddler so the 90 degree door swing is a must and live in AZ where it gets to 120 degrees in the summer. I need a excellent AC!
For what it’s worth Toyota/Lexus are well known for being very very conservative on the fuel level reading vs the actual fuel level in the tank. Chances are your GX550 is showing empty while still holding 3-4 gallons of fuel. The manufacturer likes to keep the fuel system as reliable as possible so Toyota/Lexus want to keep the fuel pump submerged in fuel because the pump is cooled by the fuel around it. So they show empty with a healthy reserve for fuel pump longevity. You can still use every last drop though. So you really have more range than you think, but using every last bit is probably not advisable on any car or truck. At least not if you care about your fuel pump.
@@JohnJohnCrusher Sure you can use it, not advisable for fuel pump longevity or predictable remaining fuel level but it’s possible. Just take a 5 gallon Jerry can of gasoline with you when you test out how much more fuel you really have.
@@NorthoftheWallGarage I agree with you that if a larger tank becomes available that it’s worth considering. I’m not sure why the fuel tank is so small, my guess is to preserve payload, but that’s just a guess. If towing 9,000lbs is a thing with the GX550 that means approximately 900lbs of tongue weight on the hitch eating up payload. Throw in two adults, and some kiddos on top of that and you’re hard up against your rated payload. Gotta save that payload weight somewhere and gasoline weighs 6lbs/gallon.
Its a built in reserve to avoid damaging the fuel system. When the fuel indicator shows empty, you still have 3-4 gallons in every toyota, yes you are correct.
For 80+ almost out the door for overtrail. This is a huge con. Interior also feels cheap. As excited as i was, i might just pass. Give it a year or two, you can prob get the landcruiser for like 40-50k. Prob the best option
Hood flutter is interesting. Not sure if it's all new cars, but I noticed this car seems to have incredibly thin body panels and if the panels wave under normal driving speeds, that may be a little too thin. For an off roader, if I dent body panels with small tree branches, that would be a bummer. Beautiful car though and thanks for sharing your thoughts.
My wife has a 2013 GX-460. The AC fan doesn't blow hard enough either. I have to manually increase the fan speed to cool properly, so I think it's designed to be that way. It does have a true 3-zone AC/heat with rear controls though.
I ordered a GX 550 Overtrail from the dealer in early April 2024. Delivery is early October. I drove past the Toyota dealer and saw a 2024 Land Cruiser outside. Same body as the new GX. I went for a test drive and bought it on the spot. I'm glad I got the hybrid version over the Lexus' twin turbo V6. The Land cruiser has a 2.4L four cylinder with a hybrid built in. And the gas mileage is great. I'm sure glad I got the Toyota over the Lexus. I got the round headlights too.
Fellow car enthusiast here, I loved the video. Our order is set to arrive next month and it’s a premium + with bench seats, hud and a few other extras. Wish it had captains. We need the third row. We test drove a premium + on the lot last week and are getting cold feet. Handling was poor. We wanted a premium + because it has the third row and the luxury trims are underwhelming from a value standpoint, not to mention the wheels are so ugly as to be embarrassing. We want something that can tow a camper, go to Corolla NC, and has a third row and ventilated seats. We have a 2016 MDX (advance, entertainment packages) now and I’m half tempted to just keep it. What do you think?
We hit the OBX too! Buying a car is such a personal thing, so hard for me to advise you well. What I will say is the GX is truly a truck whereas your Acura is not - it’s hard to compare the two. If you don’t love the GX definitely don’t buy it - it’s a lot of money to spend for something you’re so-so about.
I have a 1997 T100 which has bars underneath the hood. They separated years ago with the original owner. That allowed the hood to "flutter". The paint on the pickup is still great except the hood which lost its clearcoat due to the flexing.
The range was never a selling point for any GX. It does beg the question of why deal with the complexity (and current problems) of the V35a engine over the 1URFE; this V6 gets no real world mileage benefit over the V8.
Hey Mark - fantastic videos! I drive a Tesla Model Y and am currently looking for a sportier SUV to use as more of a family hauler for around-town driving. I've been considering both the Lexus GX and the Land Rover Defender, but I'm leaning towards the GX. I'm not really an off-road person, though I do drive on the beach from time to time. I’m looking at the Premium Plus trim since I prefer the smaller rims for a smoother ride, rather than the larger ones that come with the Lux package. I do have one little one in a rear-facing car seat and another in a forward-facing seat. Would you recommend the captain’s chair option in that situation or bench? Also, how big of a hassle is the leg positioning piece with the rear tire? I’ll be going back to the dealership to test it out myself, but I appreciate you bringing it up. I’ve also heard a lot about the hood flutter issue, and since I’m someone who gets easily distracted, I’m curious if it’s been annoying over the past few months or if it’s something you’ve gotten used to. Thanks again for all the help - out of all the videos I’ve watched, yours has been the most informative and helpful in guiding me towards making a decision.
Apologies for the late reply and thanks for the feedback! I would definitely go captains chairs and would have picked that configuration if it was available for overtrail. It's nice to have that space to access the third row. After nearly 8 months of owning this car, the leg positioning issue is not a problem anymore. I got completely used to it and just keep my back against the inside of the rear door when loading my son in the car. Hood flutter definitely exists, but is easy to ignore after a while. Some have had this rectified at dealers.. I'm going to see if they're able to do anything to mine to help. If they couldn't do anything, it really isn't a big deal to me, but definitely something to note.
Nice video and lovely GX! I own a LX 600 but seriously thought about the GX. Your garage is beautiful and big. Congratulations!! My car barely fits into my normal sized bay. The GX and LX are about the same length so I advise potential owners to measure your garage bays to make sure the car will fit!
Curious about an update. How has the GX been performing? Have you still been happy with it? I have a deposit down on a 25 OT. I’m still waffling on color. Deciding between Earth, Atomic and Nori. Has Nori been difficult to keep clean? Any regrets on the color or the vehicle so far? I’m a previous gx460 owner that really enjoyed it for the 3 years we owned it.
I'll release an update video before the end of the year - been very busy in my personal life but want to get this back going on here! Loving the truck and been very happy with it. Nori is the best color in my opinion.. it is a darker color so it shows more dirt than silver or white would, but it's absolutely beautiful and compliments the lines of the truck so well. Second choice would be Earth! Atomic is very classy but think I prefer that color on the LX
Thanks for sharing, great video! I’m definitely waiting for the hybrid version of this. 300 mile range is too low. The other things would annoy me as well such as getting dirty from the tire, weak AC in the back, flattering hood.. I hope they address it it soon.
I would still give it a drive and see it in person. I think this was the best vehicle for me and my family so I don’t regret the purchase, but it’s certainly not perfect
Sorry to hear that. I’m not too worried tbh - I have successfully owned some of the most infamous cars out there for engine reliability.. a lot can be remedied with driving style
@@NorthoftheWallGarage I wouldn't be too worried either, at least for 7yrs/70,000 miles (powertrain warranty). After that, it's a potentially very costly time bomb.

I have a 24 Tundra Limited ( love it),,, I also have a 2015 Lexus ES350, I think it's as close to a perfect automobile as you can get, it is bulletproof reliable, has a ride like silk, it's got 123K on the odometer , it seems like it runs better now, than ever, ( I'm not exaggerating ), these Lexus vehicles are built for the long haul, it's known in the industry, and no rust whatsoever
If no tire shine, will be mud for people, so good call out that the wheel well is part of the door. Interesting find and heads up. I have a Ram 1500 and already end up with mud on my legs from the step boards, so this is another mud trap! A/C wise, I never run on AUTO, so good to know but an FYI. I always run on LO and high fan in the summer, love my AC. I hate gas caps, love my Ram for the lack of a gas cap. Don't have to touch the cap or worry about it swinging down and hitting my paint. My RAM has the larger 33 gal tank, I can go 450 to 500 depending if I'm cruising at 65 or at 75 or even 80 MPH as I live in Montana as many highways are 80. Good info, thanks for sharing. I have the GX550 on my list of SUV's I'm considering in 2025. I will add, my "perfect" or nearly perfect car was my 2013 LS460 F Sport. EXECPT the freaking Brembo brakes that squeaked literally from break in, about 500 miles. They did swap out the pads twice and it did help but when I think back over 35 years of cars (I've owned near 60 cars in that timeframe) that LS460 is the one I miss the most. Amazing ride, sound system and overall just loved it.
I'm waiting for my GX to come in. I've been a little uneasy about it, but after watching your video, I'm feeling better about it. I live in the south, and we always put the AC way down when we get in the vehicle, so that doesn't bother me. My husband has a 2017 Tacoma, I never noticed his hood. I might now. Those aren't deal breakers for me. My job is the next exit away, so gas doesn't really bother me. Hoping the the engine issues are figured out and taken care of that of course is my main issue. Also, hoping there is something after market for the hood fluttering.
The range isn’t any different than the previous gen GX, but I agree. They could have added even another 2-3 gallons and eeked out another 50 miles of highway range.
Is there a BRIGHT flashing red light on top of the dash next to the windshield that constantly flashes when the engine is turned off, even if you're sitting inside with the key fob??
Hey love the vid. I would say a good rule of thumb is always buying the second/third year of a new generation product. 1st year is fixing any tweaks, 2nd / 3rd yr usually is the best, 3rd and beyond usually is to maximize shareholder profit which could cause a drop in quality.
Thanks for the video! The GX just arrived in Australia and we are at the moment waiting for our 7 seats GX 550 in green, these info are very helpful, I'll looking out for these issues and see what are the options. Thanks mate!
Totally agree on reduced fuel tank size on PHEV's. When the batteries only give an additional 25-35 miles or so, I do t think it's worth it going PHEV. I do know the BMW 760e has the same size fuel tank as the gas only version. Not sure if any others do.
@notWG good flutter world be a warrantee issue simple fix to adjust the good. The 3 zone climate control is avalible in all LC250 trims along with a much better fuel mileage range. It appears that you have never owned another GX as 3 zone climate control has always been an option in many trims. Lastly, your purchased an overtrail for a family vehicle? I think the TX would have much more suited your needs and expectations considering this is the first time an offroad trim of the GX has been made avalible.
I had a GX460 - that’s why I was disappointed they didn’t carry over that climate setup to the 550 in the overtrail trim. TX is perfectly fine but just does nothing for me - I need more personality. I will make a video about what I cross shopped with and share my thinking

Thanks for the video. You said 280-300 mile range. Spec says 21 gallon tank. 21 × 21mpg highway = 441 mile max range. It’s not 700 mile but beats most EVs.
Yes correct - maybe I was a bit cruel on range but currently I’m only city driving, and I think the OT is worse on fuel mileage than the standard premium due to tire size (I don’t think they separately rate trim levels with the same engine). About to do a highway trip and will report back. 2 gallon difference vs GX460 though would translate to a 40 mile difference in theory
@@rickperthis is the cover lander model and at a minimum it should do 400 miles - more like 450 miles. I was looking at one of these but I want 400 mile range - and rear AC ( should be on all trim levels).

with the A/C they have a Eco setting, it reduces the air flow to conserve energy, it's crappy, you can turn it off by pressing the Eco heat/cool button. also there is a s-mode that when on sends more air flow to the driver and not to the passengers. make sure that you turn off this if when you have passengers. you select these options from the front air-conditioning control system
LX460 23 gallon tank, 19mpg highway = 437 mile range GX550 21 gallon tank, 21mpg highway = 441 mile range That was the only valid gripe you had, and you were wrong.
Range shows 0 after 16-17 gallons. This is well documented among owners. Lexus was crazy conservative with the reserve and I'm not going to push the car further when it shows 0 miles of range left. I have never gotten more than 320 miles out of the tank even on highway trips
2 year waiting list in Montreal, Canada. I put my name on list this weekend. But I may just keep the 2017 GX460 a little longer and cancel when time comes.
I own a regular gas Toyota Grand Highlander, introduced for the 2024 model year and I think some of the issues you mention appear to be common across newer Toyotas. Firstly, the air flow not blowing hard or strong enough on a hot day unless you really lower the set temperature or alternately crank up the fan speed manually. The second is the hood flutter at highway speed. And the third issue that I have in common is the relatively low fuel range. I have the regular gas engine, not the hybrid which has lower fuel consumption. So while the fuel tank capacity is kind of right sized for the lower hybrid fuel consumption, it is certainly lower than optimal for the higher fuel consumption of the regular gas engine. Having said that, Toyota has sweated other aspects of the vehicles such that it is superior to other vehicles I have owned e.g. the perfect balance of switches and touch screen controls in my opinion vs the trend to go all touch screen nowadays. Secondly, even in the base trim Grand Highlander, the second row has it's own climate control i.e. it's a three zone control climate with vents in the ceiling stretching back all the way to the third row. And little things like a manual privacy/sun shade on the second row windows, something not found on more expensive vehicles.
Cheap Japanese selling minuscule gas tank on a large suv to the north American market. If you are in a hurricane zone and need to move away fast, you may run out of gas. Good vehicle to move around town only. Not for towing or long distance travel.

The console was enough to put me off mentally for not having buttons, but that combined with fiddling around on a screen while driving in Texas summers with a new born is a no go for the price. I may wait for the hybrid, if I don't get something sooner. I appreciate your videos. Thanks.
LC250 all have buttons and 3 zone climate.
Or get the LX 600.
Great review, thank you. I’m going to hold off and wait till some of these issues you brought up are resolved, especially the range.
Great tip - I will absolutely try that out
Or just plain poor quality. Cars have had aluminum hoods for years and no flutter.
Extremely common many Toyota/Lexus products. Panel thickness and lack of bracing to save cost and weight.
To those who think it's poor quality - Ford/Chevy/Subaru/Rivian all have this issue as well as many other manufacturers.
It is common unfortunately.

I’m waiting until 2025. Every new launch has problems. Even Toyota lol
You want to wait for 2026. Toyota takes awhile to fix the issues.
@@brucey5585 might have to anyway lol. I’m a year away so we will see what they do.
@Isovapor good luck finding a GX for $69!
Very nice review. Thank you for doing this. I just feel bad for anyone who paid $15-20k over MSRP for this vehicle.
💯 there's a sucker born every minute
Just got my luxury+ two days ago

thank you so much for the in-depth review on this vehicle! The actual livability was what I've been looking to find out and you answered most of my questions! congratulations on your ownership.
Thanks for the kind words! Very happy with it overall, but haven’t heard much from real owners so wanted to give the community some feedback
This is very, very helpful. Many, many thanks.
Hood flutter could be adjustment
There are little plastic stops under the hood that can be adjusted usually
That’s what I think also.
Good info - I will check this out
Thanks for mentioning the range, I was planning on "upgrading" my 460, but I won't if it's not 400 miles of range. My 4 runner only gets 310 miles of range and that is my biggest gripe with it.
Fuel range an even bigger issue if you tow! Thanks for highlighting this
That’s where it’s going to be terrible, but honestly I wouldn’t want to tow a lot of weight any distance with a suv vs a truck though but it’s def going to be terrible range, prob get 12 towing a load, so 12x18 would be range
XD
It has rear AC vents just not separate controls like the 3 row models.
Correction, low A/C vents, not the high ones.
Very fair criticism. Pick your trim carefully based on your needs!
@@NorthoftheWallGarage Problem is, Lexus has decided to move options around in the new GX550 - want Mark Levinson sound system? Available in Luxury and Overtrail+ only. Want E-KDSS? Available in Overtrail only. Want rear climate controls? Not available in Overtrail. Want a 3rd row seat? Not available in Overtrail. Want Mark Levinson, KDSS, a third row, rear climate controls with high vents, and an off-road package? Get a 2023 GX460 Luxury. And the 550 has a 21 gal tank vs the 23 gal tank in the 460.
Armada is way cheaper. Starting price $45k. Lexus is way higher just for the base model. Compare the Infiniti to the Lexus.
In Australia on the 300 series they will glue your hood under warranty, they clamp and glue but then you can see the dimple where they clamped it.... 300 series has bad hood flutter.
Sad....having to glue on additional braces because the hood structure is so flimsy.
Great point. Wonder if the lx600 has it as well.
Please keep pumping out the vids of this beast. This is my next car hopefully and in Nori Green also!
Thanks man! For sure - appreciate the support
I’m more worried about powertrain issues, like what tundra folks are experiencing. I was planning on buying the 2024 gx. But now not so sure.
If you are at all wanting one, you best get on the waiting list. There are 7-12 month waits depending where you live.
Very good information - I hope we will find out soon enough
@@NorthoftheWallGarage a common solution is to remove the under-body spare wheel and replace it with a secondary tank. You then either need to carry a repair kit or similar, get a rear-mounted carrier, or hope.
But when you pay premium for a vehicle one expects it to be well thought out and researched that as owners we don’t need to find solutions at our cost tbh, I find that Lexus/Toyota have done loyal customers a disservice.
when i test drove the hood flutter made it an absolute no for me. definitely disappointing for a 75k dollar vehicle
Cutting costs on those things is just mind boggling
Ridiculous for this kind of money.
My Tacoma had the same issue. I had to purchase panel sealing shit and apply it to the hood myself because the dealer was useless.
Hood flutter should NOT be present in this Lexus GX, period. Luxus falling down in quality, along with bridge bearing issues in this motor -- buyer beware.
My 22 tundra platinum has the same hood fluttering! Our GX Premium Plus will be in tomorrow. Thanks for the review!
Really appreciate your insight as I was looking at buying one this week, I think I’m convinced to wait and see if fuel tank is corrected in future years and hopefully get a hybrid.
wow- I'm so happy you mention all these things!!!!
Please let us know when you upgrade the gas tank and the process. My 2010 FJ Cruiser’s hood flutters also and has for the last 290k miles. I don’t even notice it anymore. Maybe it is just a Toyota thing. Shouldn’t happen though.
Yeah after a while in my Tacoma I stopped noticing it. Not sweating it on this one too much
I planned on replacing my wife's GX 460 with an overtrail we ordered over a year ago.
Don't replace the gx460 the new one gx550 has issues with the v6 engine after 21000 mile on the clock
@@hipetwa- You’re a future teller. No one has a GX with 21k yet. 😂
The new LX 600 has hood flutter as well. Not horrible, but still at the price point….
Keep that GX460 until the car falls apart. You got a few decades lifespan left on that vehicle.
Thanks! Nothing that makes me regret the purchase. It’s a great truck with a lot of presence
Interesting connection between current fuel tank size and anticipated hybridization.
Some folks in here are nervous about the TTV6 but so far so good
None of your complaints were that important to me, but I respect your inputs.
Appreciate it! I love the GX550, and yes depending on your needs none of this may mater
You have to adjust the round rubber bumpers under the front of the hood. My 4 runner did the same thing from the factory but a quick adjustment fixed it
Thank you! Other owners have reported this with varying levels of success.. I'll give it a shot
But you can't be sure. So you can't really use that supposed hidden capacity.
Interesting info - I could see that as a possibility. I found out the hard way that Mercedes is not conservative with the fuel gauge 😂
@@JohnJohnCrusher
Sure you can use it, not advisable for fuel pump longevity or predictable remaining fuel level but it’s possible. Just take a 5 gallon Jerry can of gasoline with you when you test out how much more fuel you really have.
@@NorthoftheWallGarage
I agree with you that if a larger tank becomes available that it’s worth considering.
Good feedback - thanks!!
Excellent and honest review!!
New LC is sweet. Glad you're happy with it!
Driving a car with its hood flapping around would drive me absolutely nuts
The range really is a killer.
Awesome, thanks!
Short range is a deal killer. Thank you for this video.
Love this color, great choice!
thank you!
Thanks! My house was built pre-automobile so the garage was built for carriages!
My LC100 had a hood flutter as well. Drove me nuts. Was always worried it would suddenly rip off when driving on the highway.
Thanks for sharing, great video! I’m definitely waiting for the hybrid version of this. 300 mile range is too low. The other things would annoy me as well such as getting dirty from the tire, weak AC in the back, flattering hood.. I hope they address it it soon.

You’re going to love it!! It’s a great truck - hope yours arrives soon!
Why do you need this model hi end vehicle
Nice car but still love my Gx460. I heard that main bearing go bad on this.

Any rumors when the GX550 hybrid will come out? 4:30
Likely 2026 if at all. Some are saying GX550h will be Asia only
Hey love the vid. I would say a good rule of thumb is always buying the second/third year of a new generation product. 1st year is fixing any tweaks, 2nd / 3rd yr usually is the best, 3rd and beyond usually is to maximize shareholder profit which could cause a drop in quality.
Thanks for the info 👍

I was looking at one of these but I want 400 mile range - and rear AC ( should be on all trim levels).
Great video but I have to ask, you show a 2 gallon difference between the GX 460 and the 550. That would be about what, 41 miles?
2 major cons: Interior finish out of Grand Highlander, and gas economy worse than on my GX460 with the V8. I guess I'll keep the V8
Interior is very utilitarian - it's no Mercedes S class but for what I need the truck to be it works well. A good step up from the new land cruiser
Great video. I was looking at GX. I’m in a X5 M60 now and a M4. Was looking at GX, RRS or new cayenne GTS. Range is Soooo important to me. All good to know.
Thanks! Yes - in a fantasy world this car would have a diesel option in the US. Still recommend checking out the GX - very different than the Cayenne and RR in the sense that it’s a proper truck. Depending on your lifestyle that could be a better fit
As an add on truck? You’ll never be remotely happy coming from a more comfortable & luxurious BMW to a GX truck. It’s the anti crossover, and massively different. As an add on off road mini Ute extra truck, sure.
What car seat protector did you buy for your kids child seat?
with the A/C they have a Eco setting, it reduces the air flow to conserve energy, it's crappy, you can turn it off by pressing the Eco heat/cool button. also there is a s-mode that when on sends more air flow to the driver and not to the passengers. make sure that you turn off this if when you have passengers. you select these options from the front air-conditioning control system
Great info - I will check that out. Thanks!
Maybe you have actvated S-Flow option on your AC and thats why its blowing slow.
LX460 23 gallon tank, 19mpg highway = 437 mile range
GX550 21 gallon tank, 21mpg highway = 441 mile range
That was the only valid gripe you had, and you were wrong.
Range shows 0 after 16-17 gallons. This is well documented among owners. Lexus was crazy conservative with the reserve and I'm not going to push the car further when it shows 0 miles of range left. I have never gotten more than 320 miles out of the tank even on highway trips
5th gen 4Runner has the same tank size also at 21 I believe. So I get like low 300s as well
2 year waiting list in Montreal, Canada. I put my name on list this weekend. But I may just keep the 2017 GX460 a little longer and cancel when time comes.
Good luck! I'd definitely advise checking it out when they are available to you - but nothing wrong with the GX460. Love Montreal btw! Great city
We were going for a Premium model of the GX550, I wonder if it will have rear vents?
Of course it will. Just not controls!
I speculate that the hood flutters because it’s long and relatively flat, and doesn’t have the rigidity of a curved panel.
It isn't happening on other vehicles with a flat hood. Terrible excuse.
