    I’d pick you up a mig welder that’s compatible with gas 75/25 and run solid wire instead of flux core, a lot cleaner of a weld and a lot more forgiving as long as the metal is clean. Also generally doesn’t take a lot of practice to lay down some pretty and good penetrating welds. Truck looks awesome!

      Was going to say the exact same thing..... if you are welding that good with flux core wait until you try it with gas... you will be even better!

    One good rule to remember...heat travels up.
    Noone ever said a vertical welds has to start at the bottom...start more near the top, this helps weld on cooler metal, then drop down and run up, back stepping onto the upper bead laid

    As a high performance welder the best I can say is insure your polarity is set properly for flux core wire to avoid excess spatter. Use the settings for metal thickness on the inside of the mig door and fine tune from there. Keep 1/8 inch distance from the weld at all times and be mindful of your angle. Flux core or not you are supposed to push a mig puddle not pull it. You can weld from top to bottom but if you want to weld uphill you need to keep a minimal 10 to 15 degree angle pointed uphill. You will improve weld quality with gas and solid wire but not necessary. You can remove the spatter easily with a small chisel.
    Thank you for appreciating the work and skill that goes into high quality welds. Love the channel. Keep up the good work

    little tip, don't pay attention to the chart, welding thick material (like a frame) turn the heat up all the way and adjust the wire speed till it makes a constant weld, travel downward when welding in a C pattern from the item being welded on to the base material. the charts never are right for the way i weld, good luck.

    I respect that you are willing to practice a LOT to teach yourself how to weld. I think part of your issue may be that you are practicing with metal that is way too thick to penetrate with your welder, get some material that is like 1/8" thick and practice on that. The hardest part is getting the welder set up for the job at hand when you are learning. Try turning your heat up and your wire speed down slowly until you can tell you don't have enough wire speed and then start adding wire speed slowly back and practice getting the settings right on metal that is close to what you're going to be actually welding on the truck. Love your channel, been a fan since you started in Hawaii and you have come such a long way. Home mig/flux core welding is fairly easy once you get your machine set up right. Best of luck to you and your family. I have a grandson that is your oldest son's age, I love that age, they are so sweet and fun to hang out with at that age.

    A welding tip if you're using Flux core wire make sure the positive and ground in the machine are swapped around ( + on the - post) will reduce splatter very much but this is only if using Flux core wire, wire size does not matter.

    Weld with stick man, it comes out cleaner, it penetrates better and has more strenght. The only downside to it is the preheating and the fact that you need a more stable hand. But it is very quick to lesrn. Use 6013 for the first pass and if the piece actually needs more than that you can go with 7018 rod. And BTW, you should also apply post weld heat. A simple torch into the general area maintainning the piece warm is good enough to do the trick and aid in stabilizing the steel in order to avoid structural compromises like brittleness due to a big welded line. Preheat for around 5 to 10 minutes, weld and then repeat as it cools off. Propane torches allow it to cool down as they dont introduce so much heat into the area but it is still very hot and certainly will be hotter than free air

  • @grahamkrivanek2315
    @grahamkrivanek2315 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Welding help- without gas it's never really going to look that good. Down hill will be easier and cleaner, but will not penetrate as well as uphill. Welder setting is obviously a big factor, as well as travel speed, keeping the gun at a consistent angle, and keeping the gun distance the same as well. Also just being comfortable when you start and having a good line of sight as you weld is important. Unfortunately Flux Core welding always leaves a lot of spatter, not much you can do about that except some pre spatter spray. Also try slowing down, try not to lose the puddle as you weld. Create the puddle when you start and carry a consistent puddle as you go, never weld past the puddle, good luck👍 it take tons of practice

    • @LonestarHawaiian
      @LonestarHawaiian  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Welding is not like riding a bike. If you don't do it for awhile then you end up sucking for a bit. Also number one factor are the settings on the welder, and since you are trying to weld two different thickness and types of steel together, it is an up hill battle to dial it in.

    With a 110v machine definitely do not start at the top and weld down (as some people have suggested) as there will be significantly less penetration for this particular weld. When welding uphill pause on the edges of each material (frame side then strap side) while gradually traveling in an upward motion. Metal preparation is always key, the bubbling you talked about getting on the frame is probably due to not having the coating all the way removed. Additionally leaf springs are hardened spring steel and are not typically meant to be welded on. Try to find some regular carbon steel to practice on and that will significantly help you dial in your settings.

    It sounds like you started your weld from the bottom and worked your way up. Since you're using flux core, you should start from the top and work your way down, because of the slag. If there's slag, then drag.

  • @adambodin833
    @adambodin833 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know this video is 10 days ago, but there are two ways to set up the polarity on your welder. For Flux core you have to reverse the polarity. If you don't it will spit and sputter slag all over like you had issues with. The welder may have been set up the other way initially.

  • @ThatOneHoosier

    100% agree with the comments about going gas MIG with 75% argon and 25% CO2 and .035 wire That will keep your spatter down and penetration good. A couple of thoughts about your practice. Those leaf springs are spring steel (high carbon, heat treated) you're not going to get good penetration which is why you're seeing so much spatter (even for flux wire) spring steel requires preheating for good penentration so i'd be willing to bet you saw better results the longer you were welding in one area. Try some mild 1/8" steel next. I bet you do much better. On your comment about starting at the bottom... try starting at the top next time and use gravity to help pull the pool down. Best of luck to you.

    Practicing on the sprung steel was a very bad way to practice clean steel at 3:16 thick turn the temp up all the way weld while turning down the wire speed when the wire stops jumping and popping search the sound like bacon frying steady. You’re a good run it running vertical up when welding with shielded wire is the way to go, slow, weaving back-and-forth, slowly, moving up, keeping the puddle moving.😂

      Very typical for long travel. I personally wouldn't run spacers on a long travel set up. It adds more stress points, and that rear ends going to take alot of punishment. Idealy he would get a new rear end, and regear as well to compensate the new tires. When I was building my prerunners I was told to follow this rule [(New tire size x stock gear ratio)/stock tire size)]= new gear set ratio. Never had any issues. I also go up a size to compensate for the added weight if you aren't adding power.

    You are also working against gravity. Start up too and work down. Also on some of the crappier welds it looks like you are holding the gun too far from metal

    Learning using flux is rough. Rent a bottle of 75/25 and mig weld it. Also those welds on the suspension parts are not mig or flex, definitely TIG

    Even if the craftsman broke you can bring it back to the store and get a replacement for free.

    Stack tacks instead of trying to run a vertical bead. It's easier to do especially for beginners

    why are you welding up and not down? Also if your using flux core do you have your welder set to dc negative, with the mig gun being the negative and the clamp being the positive, ive gotten better results like that with a slower wire speed

    I didn’t need to weld or cut a single thing on mine. And it’s a 12 inch lift with 3 inch body.
