    In case anyone's curious about the actual locks in these devices:
    Turnart: Dimple lock - Can be picked about as easily as a standard pin-tumbler lock in most cases (they're basically just pin-tumbler locks with the pins running perpendicular to the keyway). Bump kits and pick guns exist for these, as well, providing methods for unskilled, non-destructive attack. Just not the Brockage pin-tumbler gun Jer was using.
    Munirator: Tubular lock - Can be both opened and decoded using a simple, pocket-sized tool with no skill required. I've seen chintzy, Chinese knockoffs sold in sets of three for ~$25.00.
    Tevlaphee: Slider lock - Requires a different tension tool than the pin-tumblers but seldom more skill. You can usually manipulate the sliders just as easily with a standard short hook or medium hook/Peterson Gem-type pick. The cheaper ones (vast majority of them) can be easily bullied open with high tension and just sliding the sliders around until they set similar to how one would handle most Master Locks.
    California Immobilizer: Another shit tubular lock - Nothing new to add.
    Barnacle: Has an obvious mechanical override that, according to the website, seems to allow you to remove the device without triggering the alarm. This looks like it's to allow the device's owner to remove it in case it fails or the batteries die or the vehicle it's attached to is abandoned, etc. etc. Judging from appearances the lock is likely a standard pin-tumbler, dimple or slider like the ones mentioned previously. I doubt it'd be difficult to pick or bump. There are apparently also a variety of wireless vulnerabilities including one that allows anyone nearby to hijack the device's unsecured SIM card's wireless connection for free internet access.
    This is likely all irrelevant, though, as the website warns against applying the device to any vehicle with _any_ amount of windshield cracking or damage as the suction can further damage or destroy the windshield. Knowing how common this kind of damage is, I'd be incredibly surprised if anyone decides to pay the MONTHLY FEE to _rent_ a device that can be so easily bypassed while also being an enormous liability. It just takes one lawsuit from one busted windshield to wipe out any potential profits from these things _real_ quick. I'd imagine the embedded tracker (which I believe can be jammed) would also generate a sizable amount of costs in the form of privacy-related lawsuits if their use doesn't end up banned entirely in some places for this reason.
    Long story short - Fuck these things.
    Edit: Did some small changes in verbiage to make a few lines sound a bit less clunky. No significant change in content.

    • @c.varela
      @c.varela ปีที่แล้ว +9

      About the last one: do you think it would be easy to remove with ordinary objects (even if you destroy them in the process) like a metal hanger, a 40 cm ruler, a longer knife/sword or even a stronger fishing line?

    • @meatharbor
      @meatharbor ปีที่แล้ว +73

      @@c.varela You mean the Barnacle? If so then yes. Getting anything under the edges of the suction cups _should_ break the vacuum and allow it to be removed.
      Students at the University of Oklahoma (where it was being temporarily used for testing to see if the school wanted to actually go through with renting the things) even managed to get 'em to come off by just running the defroster for 15 minutes and then breaking the vacuum with a credit card. They've supposedly "fixed" this vulnerability but I don't see how they could, they never explained how they did and there's conflicting reports from customers about whether or not this vulnerability still exists.
      The problem is that the thing's equipped with a tracker and an alarm, so if you break the vacuum on the suction cups or move the device more than a few inches then it triggers the alarm and prompts it to send an alert to the paired app on the customer's phone, so trying to get it off that way is less than ideal. Picking/bumping/raking/etc. the mechanical override lock or (apparently) coating the thing with aluminum foil to break the wireless connection should cause it to detach on it's own without any alarm.
      Two other solutions were to coat your windshield in something that it can't stick to or cover your windshield in a cloth sheet or something like that with the ends smashed in the car door frames so it can't be removed without unlocking and opening the doors, forcing the parking enforcement people to risk a lawsuit cutting through the sheet to attach the device.
      Or, if this is somewhere you have to park a lot, get together with other people who have to park in the area, find out how many Barnacles are in use, pitch in together to buy enough cheap, shitty junkyard cars to illegally park so they have to use all their Barnacles on the junkers nobody's ever gonna move.
      I apologize for answering your fairly simple question with a massive wall of text but I tend to get kind of obsessive over anything vaguely security related. I just can't _not_ break shit.

    Thought: the mini truck you used has offroad tires, which are fairly common, but not the most common wheel/tire setup. It may be worth trying this test on something with more standard street wheels and tires, there's less give/flex in something with a smaller sidewall.

      @shepshifter8742 Think about the Donut audience and what their cars look like. Sure, some have offroad oriented vehicles, but think of the folks that have stanced Honda civics, a drift import car, or bagged classic. The sidewall in those tires is next to nothing, and airing down will do nothing for you in this situation.
      Heck, even new cars from the factory will have crazy low profile stuff. Look at a Ford Explorer ST, any BMW, Audi, Lincoln, or Genesis.

      Yup, power tools can make short work of it but that's true of most locks. That said, it's cheap enough that you could buy 4 and put one on each tire and even if someone is walking around with power tools you'll raise the chances of someone noticing before they get all 4. Kind of a pain in the butt to take on and off 4 but if it's say the trailer for a boat or an ATV or something else you only take out once every week or two (or seasonally in cold weather places)? Worth the hassle for $120 bucks.

      While LPL is impressive in how he demolishes a lot of locks using his skills, this test was probably more representative of the average criminal or blameless driver who get their car booted for no reason whatsoever...
      That looked like a wafer lock in that first $30 boot. These are generally, according to LPL, the shittiest locks on the market. I think he has shown one or two that were decent, but the rest of the wafer locks he's shown has been total garbage.
      But the thing is that even total garbage locks are enough to thwart most people as they don't know where to start picking them, and don't have the tools that LPL consider everyday carry items. Heck just look at the compact pocket kits he sells. I think the has some that take up about the same space as a credit card. But I and most other people doesn't have any of these. We haven't spent time learning how the locks work or how to pick them, or bypass them as is often an option.
      We resort to a lot of grunting and tools, both those we might be carrying in the car and whatever we find that can make for an improvised tool. And yes, even power tools if ve can get our hands on them in time.

Better get some tools first, remove it, and get the hell out of there. Is it worth it just to dodge a relatively small fine though? Your license plate is noted and you'll have a warrant out for you.
      I don't get car booting by police anyway; license plate owners information isn't publicly available in every state, but the police does have access to the owners information - just send a ticket to their address without booting the car. The high price on some of the other clamps may be intentional. A lot of courts will not hear a case if the value is under 50. You have to remember the person who put it on your car also got your registration number. Forcing it off will not only land you with a higher penalty from the authority, but if done by a contract company, the company doing the clamping on the behalf of the authority will be able to claim back the cost of the clamp in court as well, as the value of the item broken would go over the courts threshold of accepting a case.

    • @marcoantoniogonzalez6517

      Then you wonder if the LPL approach of just picking the lock can be a better approach since you are non destructively releasing the clamp. Some of the models appear to have the infamous tubular lock that can be opened with either a plastic tube or a relatively cheap tool

    • @pseudonymity0000
      @pseudonymity0000 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@cdbtheclaw That is true, In the case of it being left there by a private company. Although you may be liable for damaging the clamp if you remove it by force, you do not necessarily have a duty of care to make sure it is secure and not stolen.
      Should you leave it undamaged at the side of the road and someone steals it, or damages it because of the howling alarm, that is not your problem. You will need proof that you did not do any damage to it however, as a case like this would likely be judged on a more likely than not basis. A few photos of the undamaged apparatus and a photo of where you left it unharmed would do.
      You can argue that they left it on the street on your property. You just removed it from your property to abate a nuisance, however the fact that they left it there is wholly their responsibility and you have no duty of care to said property.
      If it is used by a private company instead of an authority, you also can just hand it strate back, or hand it in at a police station to avoid any headache of them trying to claim the cost of the clamps. It is a civil matter and not criminal, so there's nothing the police can charge you with, and you've done the responsible thing of handing it to an authority who can help return it to its original owner, just like if you find a mobile phone or wallet.
      If it is however an authority then things may get a bit hazy... It may be an offence to remove such enforcement devices. I would imagine the same property arguments though would still come into play.
      They may be able to fine you under the statute that makes removing it an offence, but you still do not have a duty of care to sed property I would imagine, so trying to charge you for replacement of the clamp can be argued against.
      If it is admitted that the fine is to cover the cost of replacement due to damage, and you personally did not damage it and got proof, the fine could be seen as unjustifiable as it is to cover something you did not do. Although you may be liable for damaging the clamp if you remove it by force, you do not necessarily have a duty of care to make sure it is secure and not stolen.
      All of this said though, you will be paying a fine or charge notice either way, should the signage be clear to the terms and conditions of parking. Not paying in the case of an authoritie could land you in serious trouble, or in the case of a parking charge in the form of an invoice from a private company, it will damage your credit record by having a county court judgment against you, being ordered to pay the company in question.
      You should only fight such cases should you know that the terms and conditions were met and that you were wrongly Charged, or you know that the terms and conditions were illegal/unconscionable/unfair under the law and thus did not form a valid contract.
      E.g:
      --------
      You entered the car park and the machines were all broken.
      There was no signage which is easily visible nearby to enter said contract with informed consent.
      An automated system charges you for a few minutes in the car park, even though you just went to the machine to read the contract, rejected it, and left immediately.
      The wording of the contract was ambiguous, such as requiring you to display the permit clearly, yet they charged you because it was on your rear window or driving seat
      or;
      It states you get X amount of time free, then list Y charges for extended times. You use your free period, go back and pay for more, and they charged you because you were in the car park for X+Y.
      --------
      I know that here in the UK clamps are not used because of the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012, Part 3, Protection of property from disproportionate enforcement action, Chapter 2;
      It is a criminal offence for a private person on private or public land to immobilise a vehicle (e.g. by clamping or obstructing), or to move a vehicle, with a view to denying the owner access to it. Section 99 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 is amended to extend and amend the powers of public authorities to move vehicles parked obstructively, illegally, or dangerously, including on private land. However, clamping is still permitted where an Act of Parliament or byelaw permits the practice, such as the Railway Byelaws.

    I can see that barnacle one being super easy to defeat with some Dacron fishing line. If you have a couple feet of it get the string started under one edge and then just work it back and forth all the way across the windshield. When the string goes under the suction cups it will loose suction.
