I was a Memphis Police Officer and I had the occassion of meeting this gentleman when he was in highschool at Briarcrest here in Memphis. He had a white Ford F-150. I meet his biological mother as well. This guy was just as intelligent and articulate then as he is now. I did not know who he was until one of my coworkers that followed sports saw his name and asked him was he "The Michael Oher" he was the epitome of confidence. I instantly liked this kid so much so, that I came home and could not stop talking about my chance encounter with this young man. i broke departmental policy by allowing Mr. Oher to ride in the front seat of my squad car. I believe everything he says and though I am much older, coming from the streets of Memphis, I have the utmost respect for this young man. Mr. Oher I was a fan then, and I am a fan now. Honestly, the movie didn't make sense to me. The family was portrayed of being a "savior" while he was a "hapless" kid. No way someone achieves what he has without smarts, grit, and tenacity. Incredibly well-spoken dude. Good for him. Can't wait to read his book.

If he's so smart why didn't he get his own attorney before the movie came out? I've seen other interviews he knew he could not be legally adopted because he was 18. Plus there could very well be something in the dad's side of the family that prevented it legally. Insurance with added dependants gets tricky. Also this was always something LeAnn pushed more. A lot of us share that same struggle with drug addicted parents. We mature quicker & grow up fast. Me as a kid I couldn't understand why my parents couldn't be responsible & this little tiny "Pebble thing" made them do such crazy things. They eventually became irresponsible, lost their damn minds, car, house. We "me & my siblings" became the parent and they were the kids. It was the same for me. I washed cars, did lawn work, and sold newspapers, and chocolates door to door. I even sold my baseball and basketball ball cards. My biological mother was so gone that she was only nice to me when I had money 🤑💰 to turn over to her. Even if it was $5,$10, $20. Because of this abuse I separated from my mother but encountered toxic women who were users especially when it came to money. I had to accept my childhood neglect. Instead of falling for money users I now despise them and distance myself. You mention how the children become grownups and the grownups are the children is 💯.

I like that he’s trying to send the message of “you don’t need someone to save you to make something of yourself” as many kids in foster care wont have someone come save them and will age out of the system. They need inspiration and the story of a kid in foster care who fought for himself *and* took whatever help he was able to (inconsistently) get while growing up is a more inspiring story for many than the one we were given from the movie

there are 3 factors working simultaneously against Oher, his memoir that states in his own words that he knew he was under conservatorship (as a shield to protect him from his cocaine addicted mother, his 11 siblings and his father that he does not know from coming to sue him), 2- why at the age of 37 yo to read the court documents? why you wait so long? 3- Oher was present with the attorney with the twoys that under conservatorship he was able to play football under the Tennessee law and it was spelled out in court documents that he SIGNED. This is the critical part is that he signed the papers and if you know the law whatever you sign you understood what you are doing, except if you're a woman claiming under duress from signing a pre-nup which is all BS but that's for another time.
He thought conservatorship was adoption. He didn’t understand at 18 all the technical legalities, which means that his finances would belong to the Tuohy’s for the rest of his life. Conservator’s also have the right to use his money or image for their use and not need to ask him for permission, which they did. They get to profit from him without him getting a piece of the profit. At 18, did you know what a conservatorship was?
I'm very stunned at what I heard. People were bashed him saying that he wasn't grateful to the family. He's so sincerely said he was grateful to everyone who helped them along the way. But just that it was wrong that they portrayed him in a different light in the movie. Who wouldn't be mad at that? Now I wonder if all the people who talk bad about him not being grateful are going to eat crow now. And most of those wasn't his same skin tone either.

@renise011 Well, it seems you don't know much about Ohr's situation as he was enrolled into private school basically due to pity after failing to complete a semester of home study, but because of these pre-qualifications from the Headmaster it took him out of the public school system. The Headmaster basically felt guilty that he would have been the reason that Ohr would have had zero schooling unless he enrolled him anyways. Ohr entered the private school with a 0.6 GPA...extremely far from any ability to get a scholarship due to him being smart and his grades. Get the facts before posting dumb responses 🤣

The Touhy's only signed him to a financial conservatorship, not a full adoption. The Touhy's rode his blocks all the way to a financial TD! He was already a 5-star recruit BEFORE he moved in with the Touhy's and transferred to their daughters Christian Prep HS.
I never saw the movie and I steer clear of “savior” type stories. It’s usually one sided. This man definitely needs another movie made about his true story. Listen to Jason Whitlock’s take. He actually did research and watched the movie and more importantly read Michael’s Oher book from 2011. Jason just spits out facts! Very refreshing!
I just did, Whitlock did not hold back one bit. He went deep into his 2011 book and Oher says in that book that he beat the odds in part because of the Tuhoy family.

I was a Memphis Police Officer and I had the occassion of meeting this gentleman when he was in highschool at Briarcrest here in Memphis. He had a white Ford F-150. I meet his biological mother as well. This guy was just as intelligent and articulate then as he is now. I did not know who he was until one of my coworkers that followed sports saw his name and asked him was he "The Michael Oher" he was the epitome of confidence. I instantly liked this kid so much so, that I came home and could not stop talking about my chance encounter with this young man. i broke departmental policy by allowing Mr. Oher to ride in the front seat of my squad car. I believe everything he says and though I am much older, coming from the streets of Memphis, I have the utmost respect for this young man. Mr. Oher I was a fan then, and I am a fan now. God Bless you kid,.

If he's so smart why didn't he get his own attorney before the movie came out? I've seen other interviews he knew he could not be legally adopted because he was 18. Plus there could very well be something in the dad's side of the family that prevented it legally. Insurance with added dependants gets tricky.

there are 3 factors working simultaneously against Oher, his memoir that states in his own words that he knew he was under conservatorship (as a shield to protect him from his cocaine addicted mother, his 11 siblings and his father that he does not know from coming to sue him), 2- why at the age of 37 yo to read the court documents? why you wait so long? 3- Oher was present with the attorney with the twoys that under conservatorship he was able to play football under the Tennessee law and it was spelled out in court documents that he SIGNED. This is the critical part is that he signed the papers and if you know the law whatever you sign you understood what you are doing, except if you're a woman claiming under duress from signing a pre-nup which is all BS but that's for another time.
He thought conservatorship was adoption. He didn’t understand at 18 all the technical legalities, which means that his finances would belong to the Tuohy’s for the rest of his life. Conservator’s also have the right to use his money or image for their use and not need to ask him for permission, which they did. They get to profit from him without him getting a piece of the profit. At 18, did you know what a conservatorship was?
They made him look dumb and intellectually challenged in that movie. To hear him speak yo can obviously see the lies of that movie.

I'm very stunned at what I heard. People were bashed him saying that he wasn't grateful to the family. He's so sincerely said he was grateful to everyone who helped them along the way. But just that it was wrong that they portrayed him in a different light in the movie. Who wouldn't be mad at that? Now I wonder if all the people who talk bad about him not being grateful are going to eat crow now. And most of those wasn't his same skin tone either.

@renise011 Well, it seems you don't know much about Ohr's situation as he was enrolled into private school basically due to pity after failing to complete a semester of home study, but because of these pre-qualifications from the Headmaster it took him out of the public school system. The Headmaster basically felt guilty that he would have been the reason that Ohr would have had zero schooling unless he enrolled him anyways. Ohr entered the private school with a 0.6 GPA...extremely far from any ability to get a scholarship due to him being smart and his grades. Get the facts before posting dumb responses 🤣

There was NO reason for a conservatorship to be established for a legal adult. They got him to sign away his rights, and made sure he didn't get a Guardian ad Litem - a neutral party whose sole purpose would have been to make sure Oher understood every scrap of paper he signed. The Touhey's are shady AF. And if they can claim to be too rich for this to be about money, then so can Oher.

And he only found out now at 37 they have legal rights to put him in an institution, sold his likeness and image without him getting compensated for that and not tell him they have rights to his money until HE found out 20 years later. I feel like without the support of the family he would never be where he is at now. That family owned 117 fast food restaurants. At that time and still the family is worth hundreds of millions of dollars. They wanted to help him and they did.
True. Still, they should not have the legal right to his money, sell his image or likeness and profit from it without his consent, or have the right to have him put in a mental institution at age 37 (that is a conservatorship). And they lied to him saying they adopted him legally.

I never saw the movie and I steer clear of “savior” type stories. It’s usually one sided. This man definitely needs another movie made about his true story. Listen to Jason Whitlock’s take. He actually did research and watched the movie and more importantly read Michael’s Oher book from 2011. Jason just spits out facts! Very refreshing!
I just did, Whitlock did not hold back one bit. He went deep into his 2011 book and Oher says in that book that he beat the odds in part because of the Tuhoy family.
