Amid Dispute Over Being 'Blindsided', Michael Oher Tells His True Story from Orphan to Overcomer

- Former NFL star Michael Oher is making headlines this week with a lawsuit filed against the Tuohy family. He and the family were the subjects of the hit film "The Blind Side", but Oher is now speaking out against both on the heels of the release of his new book where he's sharing lessons learned from a lifetime of adversity.
Oher is known for being an overcomer. He beat the odds, rising from homelessness to achieve eight seasons in the NFL as an offensive tackle for the Baltimore Ravens, the Tennessee Titans, and the Carolina Panthers until an injury sidelined his football career in 2016. With a father lost to prison, and a mother lost to drugs, Oher's orphan story is one many think they know.
"When I started this journey a long time ago, I was just chasing to be comfortable after I was done with football. My back was against the wall all my life. From the time I was three years old, my first memory was being homeless. Three to ten, I was in and out of foster care, shelters, on the streets," he told CBN News.

Michael oher really said he was a kid who was well on his way prior to meeting the tuohys, Yet he had a .7 GPA The tuohys got him a tutor to work with him everyday to make him NCAA eligible. They got his GPA up to a 2.2 I’m not judging either party until all the facts come out but there is a strong chance that without the tuohys intervention, he would not be where he is today.
This is true. But the movie deals to give him nothing and a conservatorship for almost 20 years was very exploitive.
@@sjg5994 I think that's the issue. For there to be a contract that exist that says you can make money off a person.
I think when all the facts our out we will see a different story. Oher wrote in his first book he knew about the conservatorship and the Tuohys lawyers added that all the money from the movie was split evenly to each person in the family. @@sjg5994
@@sjg5994 and if he did receive his share of the money from the movie how will you feel about the situation then?
@@sjg5994nah he was an adult.. He could have ended the conservatorship.. Why wait for 2 decades. In his memoir, he clearly knew about the conservatoship.
This whole

I loved this movie and this story so much.
What a shame:(
The movie is accurate. It never claimed to be a documentary. They dude is lying

Because Oher wrote a book about what happened. It has also been proven by receipts(as the young people say) that he’s lying. He also wrote in his book that he knew it wasn’t adoption. They never made a dime off the dude. The family even met with his mother irl.
In the same book he mentions that he knew it was a conservatorship contract but you're leaving out the part that he mentions that the family told him it was part of the adoption process. @@ToxicGamer86454
The family didn't pocket a dime from his NFL salary. It is pathetically ungrateful of him to attack the family that saved him.
If u read his very first book, he said he knew of the conservatorship. He wants money, more money. He should at least be thankful for their help. The couple who helped him are already millionaires even before he came into their lives.
Michael has turned around the story!! He wrote a book in 2011 that contradicts what he now says!!!!😢🙏🙏
Provide the quote you are referring to please I think you may be mistaken
They paid there kids for the movie and Micheal got nothing
Everything said by the OP I true - if you want to know what the life story said, look at the interview with Megyn Kelly where they go through quotations, etc. The family split any proceeds from the book/film 5 ways equally amongst the children and the family were already fast food millionaires before they took Michael in. Michael has been threatening the family for a while, please do your own research xx
Michael is lying now.
@zyguit why do you think he is mistaken cause I know you haven't done research you just buy what you see on the internet
The bigger question i have to ask with much respect to Oher and the Tuohy's families , is what does this have anything to due with Christian news ?
Broadcasting about a law suit ? There is nothing christian about that and if he is a Christian than i don't know what Christianity he is practicing
Wow. Actual journalism instead of sensationalism. How refreshing to present both sides for once.
"This isn't a money issue?" (8:40) Suing for 15 million is definitely a money issue!
He isn’t suing for 15 million. He’s petitioning to terminate a conservatorship that has stripped him of his civil rights. He is also stating he thought he was legally a part of the family, and he did not understand exactly what a conservatorship is, and frankly neither do most people.

In Africa we have a saying "The thanks of a donkey is a kick". What he's doing to the Tuohy Family is beyond disgusting and sad. The Tuohy family is not poor and they definitely don't need his money. He on the other hand...... blew his money and now he's going after the only people who saw potential in him.
Exactly. Oher is an ungrateful lying POS
Correct. They are extremely wealthy and NOT from a book or movie deal.
He probably blew through his money mor than likely but who knows. Just another sad case of victim mentality. Everybody is a victim of some oppressor
He is listening to the wrong people. I wonder how many people will come to his help, after seeing the thanks the Tuohy are getting for the doors they opened for Mr. O. Love, the saying "The thanks of a donkey is a kick".

Christians are not to sue each other. Give it to God and let Him work things out for the glory of God. If I sued every one who hurt me I would be in court for the rest of my life!
He’s petitioning for his conservatorship to be terminated. He’s asking for them to stop being able to use his likeness because he has not been financially compensated for that which is exploitation. Christian should not exploit people because they are needy and talented.
Sometimes Christians have to sue in order to right a wrong.
You sound like a mega church crook. Your perfect to lead tide & offerings. How unfair to tell the person robbed not to sue.
@@lauramyers4547And obviously he tried talking to them before. Remember the "shakedown" mentioned? There were conversations before and they didn't take heed.
He's not suing them because he's hurt. He's suing them to remove conservatorship and what is owed to him.
I LOVE the way Efrem covered this and answered the post video questions with honesty, yet did not sensationalize anything. Good luck to Michael, and I hope they can resolve things and find peace amongst themselves after all is said and done. 🙏
In watching this I found myself wondering why this interview took place on CBN. There was absolutely no mention or reference of faith, or how this man's life was changed or affected by any faith-walk. I can go to any other station and find worldly news. The reality that CBN now covers worldly news and not Christian-based news stories is astonishing. Hopefully other professing Christians will notice and respond as well.
@@LadyAnnaMarieI hear what you are saying. The reason the network is covering this story may be because the movie has a mild faith base. It was very popular among Christian groups in the 2010s. I have vivid memories of watching this in the car as a teenager with youth group on long car trips. We had a hard time finding movies that everyone liked and were also appropriate. This was one of them!
What the interviewer said is KEY aand PARAMOUNT…….what ppl THINK they know about him or his story. I’ve seen some very cruel judgmental comments about him and I stayed silent because this was a family issue and only the ppl involved have a legitimate comment’s options and concerns. I’m glad he had this interview and with a respectful interviewer.
Very sad story. Oher was taken by Christian people. He was helped. And now this? 😢 It’s sad. I wonder if Oher ran through his NFL earnings? 😮. Just a thought. The Tuohy’s tried, and continue to do so. God bless all of the parties involved.❤
Something very off about this....
No good deed goes unpunished. Just disgraceful.
You mean how they tricked him into signing a conservatorship so they could make all the money off of his story and give it to their biological kids only? How is that a good deed? They love the prestige they got out of it. The whole story literally got fabricated so that they got so much credit for things they didn’t even do. Imagine, going through horrific adversity, and then having other people lie about what they did for you then take all the money off of that fake story.
Like the whole White Savior trope? Never trust the middle-aged White lady rescues big black brute by teaching him football storyline. Especially when the boy was already a sought after, All American recruit. LeeAnn built her whole persona on the lie that she adopted Michael, and it was a lie the whole time.
So it’s normal to put a kid in a conservatory and make a movie about him 😂😂😂
@@SweetE1403 You will believe what YOU want to believe. The man is just trying to sell a book and out to make a buck off of the people that blessed him. Pathetic.

Will you also do a interview with the Tuohy family? I’m interested in what they have to say. I hope that everything is resolved soon.
Ya really....
I am a little bit confused by who exactly wrote the book and if MIchael was consulted. I think it is wrong to write a book about someone else's personal life. I saw a similar situation where a family wrote a book (which was subsequently also made into a movie) about their son who had died from cancer. Much of the book covered the personal relationship between him and his girlfriend/wife. When I saw an interview with his widowed wife (he died shortly after they were married) I was stunned when she said she did not know anything about the book/movie. She had not been consulted at all. The movie seemed to indicate that she became a nurse to dedicate her life to helping others because of this experience and that he was her one true love. In reality, she was now happily married and had two kids. She actually seemed a little embarrassed to be blind sided (no pun intended) Clearly the parents of this young man had a very different perspective than the woman who was described in the movie. I wonder if there is a similar dynamic here.
Imagine you're a great swimmer who got strained in the middle of the ocean. You found a floating object. You hung on to it until help arrived. After you get rescued, you then tell the world that you never needed that floating object from the beginning. You're a great swimmer and could have survived without it.. A block of steel has the potential to become a sharp knife, but without a blacksmith, it will forever stay a block of steel. Potential without guidance is like an ember without wind. Could have, would have, should have.
That guy had others who would have helped him anyway. They made up that fake narrative. They was just getting a recruit for their school.
@@naturenupe6 Who was gonna help him? Tony and Steve Henderson? His buddy Quinterio Franklin's family? Matt Saunders? NONE of the other people where he couch-surfed even offered to let him stay with them 7 days a week. Do you think ANY of them would have paid for a *20 hr/per week* tutor for over a year? That's half a teacher's yearly salary. No tutor... his GPA stays in the toilet and he goes back to ghetto after high school.
If they wanted to help him then they didn't need to make money off him or have anything to do with his money. It's dodgy
@@Oddbisket They never touched his money. All this media gaslighting about them "having control of his finances" and comparing it to Britney Spears... it's nonsense. They had a conservatorship of the *person* with him.... NOT a conservatorship of the *estate* . Think about it. If they had control over his finances and were messing with his contracts, do you seriously think it would have taken him 19 years to discover it?
And their books and speaking appearances aren't making money off of him. They are making money off their OWN movie fame.

He also mentioned, he thought a conservatorship was an adult adoption. Or in place of adoption because he was 18 or older. I think it’s strange that the family has made their whole life about adopting this man when they never dead, they actually put him in a conservatorship which stripped him of his civil rights. Yet he is suing the people that helped him. Amazing. I think it's because he is hurting for money.
Ungrateful and lying is not how one should go through life.
I’m so proud to say I know Efrem Graham. He was my favorite teacher at Bowling Green State university.
A man who believed he was ADOPTED to later find out he was placed in a conservatorship and what a conservatorship actually means deserves a chance to be heard without people ASSUMING he is the bad guy. It is concerning to me as a critical thinker that Mrs Tuohy has openly stated she adopted this man when clearly she did not!? Of course they did nice things for him as we all should do for others who need something that we can provide. That does not mean there is NO CHANCE he could have been exploited because he could have been!!!! It’s not unheard of! Movies are made for entertainment. Michael has said things about the movie bothered him for a long time. Now if he has legitimate questions about financial gains based on a book and a movie that WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN MADE WITHOUT HIM - he has that right. I have read the court docs and I am well versed about conservatorships and in my OPINION - which I am allowed to have my own - I think there are some questions this family needs to answer. ❤❤❤
Seriously case closed so happy you said this
why this family would make even 1 dollar off his story seems twisted did they really make bank from helping him if so they have their reward. if this is what happened then that says it all. we have all seen these big somebodies strut around with their multimillion dollar homes while using the name of the Lord for selfish lust for the love of money . nothing more perverse than those who enrich themselves off christian work. i used to give to an organization that helped jewish people in need then on charity navigator i found out they were paying themselves 526,000 dollars to run a christian charity. always check to see how much the people running these christian works take for themselves. how much does the 700 club take for themselves ? or CBN
You know about conservatorships? How could he go to age 37 and not know? It appears his conservators never signed his NFL, endorsement, or book contracts. This isn’t like Brittany Spears’ dad. Michael is making a cash grab and selling a book ... and hopefully a movie deal of his own. He’ll find out that The Blind Side made a lot of money for the studio and Bullock, and he’ll keep Mrs. Tuohy from using Michael for her foundation. Meanwhile, half of folks will believe the Tuohys are greedy, rich white oppressors and the other half will believe Michael is an ungrateful SOB and that no good deed goes unpunished.

Poor little Michael. He wants reparations for the kindness shown to him by unconscionable wypipo.
I never truly thought he was adopted at 18 years old. I always thought that was just something to say because they were all close. I’ve had people through out my life I’ve called brother or sister and no blood related. Just a sense of closeness. I’m unsure why he had a conservative ship after he got drafted tho..even all the way into his late 30s tho.
He believed he was adopted by the Tuoys. Even though adult adoption was available, the Tuoys told him that a conservatorship was the legal term for adoption, and the only option available to satisfy the NCAA's concerns (apparently well-founded) about this Ole Miss Booster family's arrangements with the sought after recruit that would allow him to attend there. He had scholarship offers from much more prominent football programs, such as Alabama, but was funneled by the Tuoys to their alma mater, as part of a "family" tradition. Sadly, he only thought he was family.
Am adoption would have given him a claim to inherit a portion of the Tuoys'fortune. Instead, they tricked him into a conservatorship that gave them rights to HIS finances.
In the book and movie deals, the Tuoys included their biological children, but excluded Micheal. Further, LeeAnn has made "adopter of Big Black Athlete" her entire identity, and the basis of her books and speaking engagements. She's been dining off that lie for years.

Mr Oher is not being straight. Read his first book I believe was published in 2011. He admired he was not adopted but a conservatorship. He was never on his way to his dream on his own. It is almost imposible to get yourself out from the bottom, unless you have help from someone or a charitable institution or group. Yes you have a desire to forge your life ahead, but coming from where you were, the odds were against you. I know, I was there, and I would have never made it without the kindness of some people. I always pray for those who helped me to get where, I am now. I am not rich but my life is a lot better now than before. Mr. Oher you should be thankful for the opportunity that the Tuohy family gave you. God bless.
Basically something that people need to consider
When you write a tell allnovel and it Involves someone with celebrity status
The book before it is published is vetted up and down So during that process of due diligence obviously something was discovered that michael oher was unaware of hense the lawsuit
He needs to reread his own book from 2011 he knew it, just needs attention for his ew book and probably spend all his nfl. Money shame on him
I wondered why the family wasnt at wedding
I wonder if his wife is the source of the enmity between Michael and the Tuohys ... similar to Kaepernick’s girlfriend.
So sad. BLM got to him and now he is hurting the family who loved and took care of him. His adult trauma is about the lies he now believes from the BLM movement. I can’t believe he’s taking the family that took him in to court. He should be ashamed of himself, honestly. He’s telling a whole different story than he told before. It’s just sad.
The timing is very questionable
Poor Michael Oher Hollywood stepped in and ruined his career.😢
How did Hollywood ruin his career, if he made 30 million playing in the NFL?
Correct
😂😂😂😂
Do your research 🧐
I really love this movie . Watch it every time. This news so shocking. I mean to be fair with the Touhy Family they did have a contribution for what you are now MIKE. Going through this instead of talking to them personally is just a bad idea. So so sad
He tried to talk to them personally. Apparently, he texted them saying: "Give me $15 million and I won't release this damaging information about you." They refused to be blackmailed.

I love that movie I watch it all the time I must read his book we need a new movie black director this time Ava DuVernay
Not very thankful for a homeless being taken in and accepted by a family..Shame on thankless Oher...I don't think he would have had a chance in hell if the people didn't take him in!---TERRIBLE!!
Great job Michael Oher for staying married and having 4 kids with the same wife. It's Hollywood they make stories of books far fetch.
He recently (2022) married the mother of his 4 kids. They dated 17 yrs. Then suddenly he decides to go after the family who helped him after he blows his over 30 million he earned in NFL. Something not right about this. The truth always comes out but usually after the good name of a wonderful family is dragged through the mud.
It makes me mad that the tuohy family claims to of brought him in like a son "clothing him, feeding him" and justifying keeping millions like he owes them? Wasn't that all supposed to be out of the goodness of their hearts? They need to pay him back every dime cuz I believe what ever they paid to clothe and feed him is chump change compared to what they kept! F'em!
Dude they were multimillionaires before taking him into their lives. The father sold his business for $200 million The book and movie were just peanut and they did set aside his portion for him. He just wants more. I guess he blew through his now he is gunning for theirs.
No good deed goes unpunished.
@@jennibrien8503EXACTLY! It’s laughable that people think that they made money off this guy🙄
Beautiful........ Jussie
God's word warns Brothers and Sisters in Christ of going against each other in a court of law. I'm very disappointed this young man with his foster family could not or did not or would not reconcile make amends or make right what ever needed to be done in private between each other. No good can come of it when you shame the name of Christ. When folks are coerced and cajoled into letting "Hollywood" leave out the rest of the story- the most important part of the story- or make parts of the story up- as most folks seem to do.. theres bound to be conflict and resentment in the mix. TO MR. ORR, Young man pray about it and do what is right because what you're doing and how you're doing it is not right- God is your judge- you give account for ONLY your life to God- everyone else in your family foster family etc will also- shoulder- to-shoulder with you before God. Best to settle that stuff here- it's a fearful thing to fall into the hands of an Angry God. TO CBN, This was not covered in a God honoring way As a Christian news agency should have.. I'm disappointed in you as well- exactly where was your "WWJD" at in this situation? As my grandma would say.. this is ugly and God don't like ugly.
The guy at the end says No I don't think it's about money. 😅 Then why is there a lawsuit? The only reason for a lawsuit is to obtain money.
It's shocking that Hollywood would manipulate a story for financial gain. Just shocking.
Is not imo
A family helps an illiterate young man achieve his dreams, and then he sues them? Just amazing.
From what I’ve heard he was a straight A student already on the path to the NFL and he spent one year with the family. He doesn’t seem as he was portrayed in the movie. The way he talks mannerisms or anything. He said that wasn’t him and he’s spoken out about it even back then.
Ungratefulness
@SandyRed881 Do some more research, his GPS was a .8
Thought experiment: The Tuohys never meet Oher. Where is he now? In prison or dead from a black man's gun.
The race card didn't have to be brought up just saying dead from a gunshot would've been enough. Very harmful to the body of Christ. God bless
He was already a sports prodigy BEFORE he met them.
@@rosestone5091 ... but with his grades, he wasn’t going to college.
@@jefferytokarsky1930Touhys obviously weren't that smart either. Otherwise they wouldn't have kept him under conservatorship thar long. They wouldn't be in this predicament if they were highly intelligent people. They should have been able to project and properly plan out details to prevent this from happening.
@@sjg5994 That doesn’t mean Michael wasn’t smart, but he was behind.
The Tuohys either cut him in on the proceeds of the movie or not. The timing of the end of the conservatorship doesn’t matter much since they weren’t involved in his NFL, endorsement, or book contracts ... in other words, it wasn’t analogous to what happened to Brittany Spears. My guess is Michael’s wife is the instigator ... and it’s good publicity for the new book ... and maybe another movie.
The best way to have prevented this from ever happening was to not get involved in the 1st place.
If the Touhy’s have the control over him and his INCOME…. HIS 3 books would’nt be out… just sayin🤣🤣🤣
I don’t know the whole story, but I am so very sad that he is suing his adoptive family. I guess he feels I didn’t love him so sad . God is our healer. I wonder if he thought of suing them, or if he had help to make that decision
They literally tricked him into signing a conservatorship so they can make millions off of his story and cut him out of the profits but somehow give it to their biological kids. The movie was a fabrication and exaggerated their contribution. They never actually adopted him. Those were just papers to have financial control over him.
OH SHUT UP, clearly he feels wrong or an injustice is done to him. He’s an adult now, making adult money. This isn’t a kid screaming about not getting ice cream at the parlor. Quit siding with oppression.
Wokeness got Oher !
Throwed away and pimped out later. What a great place we live.
Helping someone up his GPA to get admitted into a college, then become a professional athlete making millions? Right! Only in America!
Why are they saying they saved him. He stayed with those people for less than a year. He was already on a path and already playing football. They finessed him
1) They have never said that they "saved" him. They always say they were happy to help him reach his goals. Seah Tuohs always says: "We gave him a home and some hope... he did the rest."
2) He lived with them part of his junior year, his entire senior year, every summer / Christmas break /Spring break for the next 4 years while he was in college
3) They met him, began funding his school lunch account, and started buying him clothes in the 10th grade. He didn't even play football until the 11th grade.
4) His grades were in the toilet. Without the tutor and special make-up classes they paid for.... he was on the path to nowhere.
5) He USED them. Why didn't he continue to live with "Big Tony" Henderson? Why didn't he continue to stay with Quintero Franklin? He blew off those nice black families... and latched on to the *richest* people he could find. He PLAYED everyone.
Therapy. That explains it.
The movie was not a documentary so it' s not surprising it's full of untruths..However, the movie was good because of all of them ..
Mr.Oher is a prime example that with God all things are possible in Jesus mighty name.Amen❤
Mike we are on your side . Stay strong . I Hope they have integrity to reach you, apologize and pay what’s owed to you .
UNGRATEFUL!!!! they shouldve just left him where he was and he wont be known by anyone at all.
