Euro NCAP Crash Test of Jeep Wrangler 2018

  • Euro NCAP performs a series of crash tests on each model tested:
    - a frontal impact test, the car impacts a rigid barrier
    - an offset frontal impact test, 40% of the width of the car is striking a deformable barrier
    - a pole test, the tested car is propelled sideways into a rigid pole
    - a side impact test, a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver's door
    A series of pedestrian tests are conducted with different impactors, adult and child head form, lower and upper leg form and whiplash tests are performed on a sled.
    Active safety is tested based on the car’s equipment: autonomous emergency braking systems (car to car, with a pedestrian and a cyclist target), lane support and speed assist technologies and seatbelt reminders.

      We need to focus on the difference of size between two cars. Jeep is only one star for the big size, but Jimny has three stars even though it's much smaller than Jeep. That's enough performance.

      @@gabrielgomez2483 The Chevy Cruze was the only car to this day to get full marks for the frontal offset test, dig it at Euroncap, every part of the body is green... Cars which did far worse got awards in the year they were tested (2009) no one talked about the Cruze. I still can't find another car which scored full marks on the offset test...
      Chevrolet actually said this in a press meeting a while ago, (Only car since Euroncap stated to get full marks in the frontal test) and Euroncap said nothing about it.

    "In the frontal offset test, the connection between the A-pillar and the trans-facia beam was damaged in a way that indicated the structure
    would be unable to withstand higher loads. Similarly, deformation of the footwell showed that the structure had reached the limit of its
    integrity. Although dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of the driver and passenger dummy, structures in
    the dashboard were thought to present a risk to occupants of different sizes and to those sitting in different positions, and protection of this
    body area was rated as marginal. Dummy readings, together with the penalty applied for the unstable bodyshell, resulted in protection of
    the driver chest being rated as weak. In the full-width rigid barrier test, dummy readings of chest compression showed marginal protection
    of the driver chest. For the rear passenger, dummy readings showed weak protection of the neck and, combined with high shoulder-belt
    loads, poor protection of the chest. In the side barrier test, the Wrangler scored maximum points, with good protection of all critical body
    areas. No pole test was conducted on the Wrangler. Tests on the front seats and head restraints indicated good protection against
    whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision. A geometric assessment of the rear seats also indicated good whiplash protection.
    The Wrangler is not equipped with an autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system."

      @@Bigsmoke-so9vo Here in the US we aren't all that concerned about the well being of non-occupants as much as we are about how well a vehicle stands up in large animal collisions. This is different than the Euro point of view that is built into the testing criteria. The Wrangler will do a good amount of damage to pedestrians, cyclists and smaller vehicles and this, combined with the lack of electronic nanny features, hurts the Euro safety rating.

    Still the most versatile and capable 4x4 in the market. It retains solid front axle, the fenders can be easily detached for more flex, doors are easily detachable and the windscreen folds like every old Jeep. People buy motorcycles for the same price as a rubicon jeep yet those are literal death trap.

      Actually the ones with the aftermarket bumpers and stuff, they'll probably do a lot more damage to another vehicle. They're anchored to the frame and will transfer a lot of shock into the frame and jolt the shit out of the occupants, but those bars are designed to NOT bend which is a bad thing for another car lol. Bad for everyone really... in fact, it's bad for your health AND your eyes, let's make it illegal. :D

    Usually body-on-ladder cars have weaker cabin but stronger chassis because main emphasis is given only on chassis & not the cabin for such vehicles.

    Those who think that their 5 stars small car are safer than this, simply they cannot understand.
    The only real measurement is the IIHS death rate, for passive and active safety, which will be available, for this car, many years after.
    The NCAP stars are just an indication, not an absolute measurement of safety.
    That is why older cars, without any airbag, may have a lower death rate from a nowadays car
    with 100 airbags +.
    F. ex., a Passat b3, (1992), without airbags at all, has a lower IIHS death rate, (24), than a 2014 Passat B6, (42).
    The Safety Rating Advisory Committee, ( SARAC), says:
    " Examination of the relationship between overall EuroNCAP test score and injury outcome on an individual vehicle basis adds a further dimension to the interpretation of the relationship.
    They show that whilst there is an association between average crash-worthiness and EuroNCAP score outcome, there is significant variation in the measures of injury outcome in real crashes for specific vehicles within each EuroNCAP score category. It shows that a vehicle with good average real world crash outcomes does not always perform well in EuroNCAP testing and vice versa. This observation is consistent across the results for all countries considered in the study.
    Comparison of average crash worthiness ratings based on frontal impact crashes within EuroNCAP offset frontal impact star rating categories showed no trends. The results suggest there is little if any association between the results of the EuroNCAP offset frontal impact test and the real world injury outcomes to drivers in frontal crashes".

      The only measurement which counts really is the "death rate", (IIHS).
      But there must be a lot of time, (years), to have it. That is why the manufacturers cannot include it into their marketing and, in reality, afraid of it.
      And as SARAC says, the real life safety has, almost, nothing to do with EuroNcap tests, or even, IIHS tests, on walls and barriers.

      Marginal on small overlap, good on moderate overlap, side, roof and restraints (IIHS ratings). What hurts it in Europe is that they have a category for non-occupant injuries (WTF) and they consider electronic systems that bitch at you or take control of your vehicle to be a good thing.
      They are even considering making it mandatory that vehicles be able to read road signs and complain if the driver is speeding.

      abdullah ramzan eh it looks like its not damaged that much but that's not a good thing, 1 those doors and windows will never for right again and 2 all the energy from the impact is transferred into the cabin and subsequently into the passengers, the more fucked up the car looks in these tests usually the better, you want crumple zones to absorb the energy.

      @@alexfraley of course the doors and windows will not fit right again, the vehicle is going to be totaled. 2nd, the front end is a crumple zone, and of course energy will be transferred to the cabin, but you don't want the cabin area to be a crumple zone. Majority of the energy will be transferred through the frame, and trans. There are multiple break and impact absorbing zones withing the frame, trans, and front end.

    i think the 1 star was mostly due to the lack of active safety tech and poor pedestrian safety. i think the overall crash occupant safety is fine.

      Nah i bought a Jeep Wrangler and im happy with it. My next one is gonna be a Gladiator :). U can say w/e u want to say about these tests but i feel safer in my Jeep than my Lexus GX460 :)

      It had little protection of some parts of the body, and the structure of the cabin was at the limit beginning to disintegrate. Also there are no assistance systems available

      @@TranMrTuan We have a GX460 and have an order in on a Wrangler 4xe. I would trust either in a collision, but if I am being honest I would take my Ram 2500 over both of them. The crumple zones on the Ram are built into other vehicles.

    O problema é que esse é um carro off road, ele é alto demais (a suspensão é para passar por cima de rochas, areia, e tudo o que vier pela frente...), ele é um carro desmontável (nele é possível tirar portas, teto, parabrisa... Tudo!)
    Uma pessoa que compra um carro desse, não está dando atenção para segurança, porque não é um carro para rua, é off road. O que essa pessoa mais teme é cair do penhasco! hahah
    The problem is that this is a car off road, it is too high (the suspension is to go over rocks, sand, and everything that comes in front ...), it is a collapsible car (in it it is possible to take doors, ceiling, windshield ... Everything!)
    A person who buys a car from that, is not paying attention to safety, because it is not a car to the street, it is off road. What he fears most is falling off the cliff! hahah

      @@TheAleFradi It has a side airbag designed to protect the head. A pole test can be done even if the car doesn't have curtain airbags. I don't know why Euro NCAP didn't do It.

      The dummies are more around 1M each. The reason they don't do it is because the head would contact the pole going over what they call a "capping limit" and therefore scoring 0 points in the test anyway.

    I think the real life safety tests are very variable and relative. We own jeep wrangler and we unfortunately involved in some major accidents, surprisingly enough after the accident we drove the car home with minor scratches while the other cars were crumbled like coke cans. Jeep wrangler is safe car

    Actually was very impressed with the "Crash Tests", the other gimmics that aren't available for people who shouldn't be driving should not be included in the title "crash test". They don't mention here that most of the negatives came from not having, emergency braking for dummies, lane drift warning and full Stability Control System you know for drivers who don't pay attention or are always on their cell phones.

      Read the report. It's not just the pedestrian safety and assists(I do agree that they should be heavily weighted), but the car failed to provide good protection for the occupants as well.

    this is possibly the only convertible tested since they updated their test suite in 2015, there are plenty of European rag tops to test - mini cooper - vm beetle - bmw series 4 but they skip over these for almost decade including the land rover defender which was built until just recently and closer to jeep in design , difficult to put head air bags etc in these but doesn't really matter cause there are also odds at play with these scores, they gave the tiny little smart car "two-by" 5 stars ... but stars only count if it hits another "two-by" sized car so i'd put my $ on the wrangler , no one is ever safe in a crash until the cab squirts full of jello on impact.

    The crash test itself appears to be better than the 1 star rating would indicate. It seems to me that it would be the most informative to not combine factors such as the lack of crash avoidance systems and pedestrian safety into the actual crash survivability rating. The passenger cell appears to maintain it shape pretty well, especially for a vehicle with a removable roof. The heads didn't contact the windshield. Yes, it's a rigid body on frame, live axle, four wheel drive utility vehicle, which you wouldn't expect to absorb energy as well as modern unibody passenger car of the approximately the same size. But 1 star? That seems unreasonable.

      @@johnmcclane8512 No, we don't. But lack of side airbags for rear passengers (where kids usually are seated) makes Jeep a weak competitor in the SUV market. That's the main reason I do not consider it as an option, otherwise it's exactly what I'm looking for.

    These tests are based on the worst case. so ok not that high off a score, but 12 years at the fire and rescue services I've seen tons of accidents so the first thing that you have to think about, is that you very rarely hit a static object this size, meaning that the kinetic energy has no where else to go as in the car. In 80% of the cases we have car on car accidents and cars having the bigger mass always deccelareted much slower than light cars accelerate away. Just imaging being in a Mini and hit by a Wrangler where do you think most of the energy will go... Or a car hiting a 12t Truck even the car having a 5 star rating. My experience tells me that I would rather be sitting in the truck. If I remember correctly, ther were only two cars (an we have an average of 1.6 crashes we're called to in a week) i've seen hitting a Wall this way. On both occasions it was intentionally (suicide attempt) 1 of them being a LR Defender with the occupant suffering only minor bruses... Btw even hitting a three that way tends to extremly deform a car because the energy is concentraded in one point and a deformed car means in this case absorbed energy that doesn't reach the occupants. But yes they are Not cheating at NCAP but the worst case scenario doesn't always reflects the reality (momentum, kinetic energy, an all the other laws of physics) they don't care of stars or test ratings an this is not only thrue for this topic.

      @@Nabilllllll It all depends what you are in a collision with. A G Wagon will do well against vehicles that weigh about the same or less than it does. If I hit it with my 8,000 lb (10,600 lb GVWR) pickup it is going to lose. Very few vehicles do well once the weight difference is larger than a ton.

    Run it into an actual car, and it would be a different story. Body on frame designs do not have the same crumple zones to absorb impact, however it will put that energy into the vehicle it hits. With the extra weight of the vehicle, + the rigid frame, real life scenario is not represented in the test. It is rare to actually run into a stationary object that doesn't give. A semi-truck would fair poorly in this test as well, but if you were to crash, which vehicle do you want to be in?

      Here in the US the Wrangler Unlimited (4 door) is a mid-size SUV. The majority of the vehicles on the road are going to be this size or larger. We have 4 vehicles and the Wrangler Unlimited is tied for the smallest vehicle with our Lexus GX 460. All 4 are body on frame.

    Jeep Wrangler gets a 1 for not having all the "Crash Avoidance" technology, but it seems to keep the driver and front passenger safe 100% of the time, and when it gets T-Boned it kicks the other cars ass. I'd gladly buy a jeep wrangler after watching this, because all these new plastic tesla-style cars are going to get crunched.

      It needs to deform to absorb the impact, otherwise all that force gets transfered to the passenger. A car being that intact by a crash isn't good news.

    Automated braking and lane keeping systems should not factor into 'crash testing'. Those systems can easily fail under numerous weather conditions, as well as during regular wear and tear, and they do nothing for the actual crash itself.

    J’ai une jeep et vue ma compétence de conduire je n’ai pas peur de ces test car ce que j’ai le plus peur c’est les autres conducteurs et non les murs de ciment que ce jeep mange en pleine gueule et oui ce tank es vraiment fait pour être rigide lourd boire un maximum d’essence et aller faire du off road! Sinon c’est pas fait pour le luxe et la sécurité en premier, c’est fait pour affronter les routes plein de nid de poule , quoi qu’il font de très beaux produit si tu es prêt à payer 80 mille dollars avec les taxes 🤣
