Crash Test FAIL Jeep Wrangler - ROLL OVER During SMALL Overlap Test

The Jeep Wrangler 4-door earns a marginal rating in the driver-side small overlap front crash test because it tipped over onto its passenger side after striking the barrier.
The midsize SUV, which was redesigned in 2018, was evaluated in three separate driver-side small overlap crash tests, one by Fiat Chrysler as part of the Institute's verification test program and two at the Institute's Vehicle Research Center. In both tests conducted by IIHS, the Wrangler rolled onto its passenger side after striking the test barrier.
The 2020 Wrangler performed well by the normal metrics used to evaluate performance in the driver-side small overlap test. The driver's space was maintained well, and the dummy's movement was well-controlled. However, the partial rollover presents an additional injury risk beyond what the standard criteria are intended to measure. A vehicle tipping onto its side is not an acceptable outcome for a frontal crash, and as a result, the Wrangler's overall rating was downgraded to marginal.
Rollovers - even partial ones like those that occurred in the Jeep Wrangler tests - are especially dangerous crashes, in part due to the risk of complete or partial ejection. This is a particular concern in the Wrangler, which has a roof and doors that can be removed. The Wrangler also lacks side curtain airbags designed to deploy in a rollover to keep occupants inside. It is not required by regulation to have side curtain airbags because of its removable roof.
The redesigned Wrangler was eligible for a driver-side small overlap rating based on manufacturer testing because the model's previous generation earned a good rating in the test. Under the verification program, IIHS assigns a rating based on video of the manufacturer test and other documentation.
In the test that Fiat Chrysler submitted, the Wrangler did not tip over.
IIHS conducts audit tests of some vehicles in the verification program to ensure the integrity of the program. The Wrangler was selected for one of these audit tests.
After the vehicle tipped over in the audit test, Fiat Chrysler questioned whether this outcome was related to the method that IIHS engineers had used to attach the vehicle to the crash propulsion system. IIHS agreed to conduct a second test using a different method, which was approved by Fiat Chrysler. The second test also ended with the vehicle tipping on its side.
The Wrangler earns good ratings in the moderate overlap front, side, roof and head restraint evaluations.
The 2020 Jeep Wrangler is available with an optional vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system that earns a superior rating. In Institute track tests, it avoided collisions at 12 and 25 mph. It is not available with a pedestrian front crash prevention system.
The SUV earns poor ratings for both its base halogen headlights and premium LED projector headlights.

the culprit of rolling is the right front tire, it turned completely to the left, compared to other vehicles the tire remains straight during the crash

The purpose of the wrangler is to be the most off-road capable & customizable production "car" in the world. Nothing else in america compares except perhaps the bronco.

Well, it is a full-on incredibly capable off-roader. And the only 'bad thing' here is that it lightly tipped over onto its side. It's not like it summersaulted or anything, or that the roof structure even gave up.
The car did pretty well since with the small overlap it protected the passenger cell and didn't even create too big of deceleration unnecessarily. The car keeping on moving is a good thing (=means the passengers got less of a sudden deceleration than if the car just suddenly stopped), only the slight lift on that left side was a negative. It's not ideal, but I sure would give this one a pass since it's actually an off-roader and overall really safe. Much better than all those unnecessarily tall SUVs which are hiked up for no reason and they still suffer much of the same symptoms as this true off-roader.
Actually Jeep owners are smart enough not fall for dumb headlines and found out the wrangler earned a “good” rating for overlap and side impact. Go drink your soy latte with sprinkles.

@@296jacqi That is because that most of the time they are modified and in the off roading community, modifications such as winches and lift kits are a modification that a lot of people use, and thus it adds to the value of a car, since they would not have to buy and modify a brand new car.

This is exactly how I Wrecked and rolled my 2018 Wrangler 4 door, but I landed upside down with the top off. My foot got caught behind the clutch and broke my leg in 3 places, my hand hit the windshield and broke, had c1-2 fracture and concussion with memory loss. Took me a year to fully recover and the fun of a Wrangler isn't worth the lack of protection!

That's the point of the roll cage I guess.
That has nothing to do with it. Any car with exposed front wheels will be more susceptible to having them snap off or climb up whatever's in front of them.

Same thing happened with my friends 08 Wrangler. She clipped a median at the passenger side front corner, it flipped onto the passenger side after ripping the wheel off. The top/roof was almost touching the floor on that side, the entire Jeep was bent (there was some speed involved). Miraculously, the drivers area was left pretty much untouched, save for the airbag deployment. She walked away with a broken ankle but that was it.
The roll test for the o8, is better than the current year! Not that I would buy one! I tried to talk my friend out off buying a used one. But he's poor and the landlord is, dumping her 08 she got at auction.

I personally love my Jeep , it’s safe and so much fun to drive and I’m not planning on giving it up anytime soon.
@@GGxri yea my Jeeps are a 98 Grand Cherokee 5.9 limited which for people who dont know is like the srt8 of the 90s. And a 89 Grand Wagoneer. Ive had people always tell me Jeeps are unsafe ill never own one. Or people go after me for the recall on the Grand Cherokees due to the gas tank being in the rear.
I get the gas tank thing. Ive had people rear end me and go under my bumper on their sports cars in slow fender benders. So i can see the tank getting punctured. So i just got chryslers trailer hitch in the recall for my Jeep an added the factory skid plate.. nothing else i can do about it. Im not going to stop driving it worrying about that stuff.
And my wagoneer has no airbags. A metal dash padded with some vinyl lol. Not worried about it either. Ima going to drive what i love. Not live in fear.

I just went there today and did a tour, which is how I found out about the Jeep issue in this video. We watched a moderate overlap on a 2024 Mazda CX-90. It's very exciting to watch!
I rolled over my 1999 Jeep Wrangler Sport with a 3” lift and 33” off-road tires, which had a much wider stance than OEM. I was drifting on a small gravel back road and went into a ditch sideways and flipped upside down. I was going maybe 30-40 MPH when I lost control. The Windshield had a crack in it, the roll cage was pushed about 1” over to the passenger side and I scratched my mirror. Used another truck and chain to flip it over, started right up and I continued to daily drive it until I sold it. Roll cage did it’s job. Now if I was going 55-70 mph on a public road and if it involved a collision, it obviously would have been significantly worse. But that was the last time I drifted a lifted Jeep Wrangler. They’ll roll over with a good gust of wind 😂

I was working on a 2020 with the death wobble. Even after I performed the tsb replacing steering damper it still had it.
you have to gut all of the front suspension to be sure one worn part and you get the wobble
My 91 YJ has zero airbags. Just a steering wheel :). I see absolutely no problems.
Had one of those :) Also before that a lifted CJ5 very short wheel base, with a big 360 v8 airbag whats that oh and only a lap belt it's amazing I am still here to type this :)

@@tnc7399 BTW It did fine on side impact and as far as "Rolling" it turned over on its side so title is misleading...Jeeps have Roll Bars for a reason ...fact is for off road your going to want ground clearance that comes at a cost. If your so worried about it don't buy a Jeep buy a Volvo you can't wheel it but you can pretty much drop one out of a 747 and be fine.

@@rsoul7282 Update: every car that goes through that test is decimated and probably totalled. That is a new crash test and is something very unlikely to happen. If climbing out of a tipped sideways vehicle is your worst nightmare, then maybe you should stay home.

@@erichanson1740 you do know the "nappy looking bronco" looks quite similar to the first bronco. And it would probably do better. It is slightly longer on the shorter one but slightly shorter on the longer one. But maybe slightly wider and probably lower center of gravity.

Ive seen video of the bigger Broncos with that trail assist feature. Now thats a pretty cool feature. But safety is my main concern for any vehicle i buy.

We do, then we go buy another. Jeeps aren’t for everyone. In most cases it’s the other vehicle that gets totaled. They are sturdy enough to take the hit too. Someone pulled out in front of me and a t-boned them. Car was totaled and Jeep had a scratch on the bumper. Once a Jeeper always a Jeeper.
Just got my first jeep and someone smashed I to my front drivers side just like this video, I didn't roll just turned around. Their truck was completely totaled and my jeep wasn't that bad. I will admit they are not the safest car out there, but some people just want live life on the edge 🤣 I told everyone, "if my jeep gets totaled I better be totaled with it" as a joke.

My first Jeep was a 2002, and my current one is a 2014 both purchased brand new.
It’s overpriced, I have replaced all the plastic bumpers running boards etc with metal ones.
My first Jeep I kept for 13 years and I don’t think my current one will last that long.
It’s a fun vehicle for summer tho with top down, my young boys love it.

I just saw a Jeep rollover. The reason why it didn't flip getting TBoned was the surface of the concrete. It's smooth and it slid. The accident I saw gripped and flipped the Jeep.

Most people who own these don’t realize this vehicle doesn’t have to meet FMVSS 214 ,side door impact, because of the removable doors.Would never own one.

rollover has it's own perils, but the force of the initial impact and risk of injury from that initial impact was greatly reduced.
I would say, in real life you shouldn't roll over. Unlike real life this is an empty space. Well, if there was a fire hydrant and you slid into it. That side would be gone.

You've never seen someone pull out of a driveway without looking, run their stop sign when you don't have one, intentionally try to beat the yellow but end up running the red, have a medical emergency while going 65, or have a tire blow out at highway speeds? You trust the next driver 110% and think if you keep enough room around you and drive with both feet you'll be safe? Instead of watching crash test videos, you should watch dashcam videos of real world scenarios. Wake up.

This is a function of having a live axle in the front. An offset crash is just going to turn the whole axle, effectively like jerking the steering wheel in the direction of the crash, lightening the car on that side. The IFS on the Ford won't have this issue, but the problem on the Jeep is overblown.
Ford you drive it off the lot, get 5 miles down the road, then call the tow truck to take you the rest of the way home. 😂

Yeah it rolled over but its also about the only SUV that comes with actual roll bars from the factory. That’s life with a high center of gravity.
All SUV’s have ‘roll bars’ you just can’t see them because they’re part of the enclosed body structure, but they do the exact same job.
Where did you get your engineering degree? You can't just dismiss a major design flaw. Jeep needs to pull all those vehicles or they are complicite in any death caused by the flaw period.

I’ve never experienced that at all with the newer 4 door Jeeps. They are pretty stable. The older 2 door Jeeps? You have to drive them. Jeeps are for fun not comfort. It’s a vehicle for those who like to drive.
