    My ARMSID just arrived, installed it in my c64c, sounds so good it’s staying there and the original will be kept in a box for now.

    the Armsid supports Paddles and some games use random numbers generated by the SID which also the Armsid supports but the other SID-substitutes dont. You can check this by watching the c64 christmas demo.

      Thanks for reminding. I was about to build a paddle for my C64. Totally forgot it need the SID to support. Lucky I got the ARM SID. 😅

    Excellent work and video! I was thinking about replacements for my C64 and you did all the work. Must see video!

    Great Vid! I’ve got an Armsid and I’m a fan. Was a good replacement for my C64c. Keep up the good work!

    Cool video! Give the ArmSID a go using its 8580 model as well. I'd say it's even closer to the original in that mode, it also has the digi fixed so Ghostbusters should sound loud and clear just as with the 6581 (if I remember correctly).

      But which one? I have a C64 with and original SID, and sounds very different from my brother's C64 (with original SID too), I suppose it depends on the SID your C64 was gifted.

      Thank you ... I agree if you take away the orginal .The Armsid wins hands down .. :)

    SwinSid seems to be pitching "sharp"... 6581 was notorious in the filter sounding different across different chips even within same revision so could be yours the filter is just a bit more "open". The 8580 was I believe a little more consistent but certain "bugs" were fixed including one that meant samples were muted on the later chip. ARMSID sound pretty good if "muffled" compared to your 6581. It's great though that options exist for SID replacements now.

      Spot on 👍 ... I love the 6581 tho over the 8580.. but hey thats just my nostalga .. ArmSid Comparison Test (8580) .. would have liked to have done one with the Backsid too.. Maybe one day .. Thanks for watching

    Only one game (Gridrunner) can I tell the diff between a real SID, UltiSID, Nano SwinSID and an ArmSID. I like the ArmSID over the SwinSID because it suppots the 1351. Real SID's are expensive and can die at any time. Glad you are testing them, nice work.

      Hi .. agreed.. the Armsid is a very close 2nd to the original sid .. Thanks for watching ;)

    ARMSID is really good, there's a difference though - from your chip, real SID:s differ as well.
    SwinSID seems more like a a sound option rather than a SID replacement.

    Missing one important info, about which fw is used in armsid. + setting of filters. All sids sounds different.

      Hi .At the time of the recording .same day as published on TH-cam it was on the latest fw ... standard settings out of the box ... I may do another in the future and ill that info in ..thanks

    The SwinSID nano has just two volume levels. 0 if off, and 1…15 is 100%. It also does not support the paddles and reading the oscillator value, which was sometimes used to generate „better“ random numbers. Due to not supporting paddles, a bad 6581 is reported by the diagnostic rev. 586220 (the Commodore Diagnostic cartridge). It is okish for playing games, I would say. The ARMSID is pretty good and as you said, the SID replacement of choice. I would not go for another SID, since it is not a question if it will fail, but when it will fail. It is the component, that fails most (beside μT RAM and the MOS logic chips). And it partially fails. If you can hear something, it does not mean, that it is ok. Very often the filters fail first or one voice.

    You can clearly hear the real SID has more treble. I think that's the main difference.

      Volume ,Base and Analogue grunt :) .. Ya can't beat the 6581 :)

      Pair a good amp with the ARM SID. It's great. My TV connects to my HTIB via optical output.

    Been trying to find a SID chip for a electronics project idea (Emulated_RAM+6502+SID = SIDtune jukebox). Seems like the ARMSID is the goto chip for getting an original is on a steady approach to impossible and those that are out there i think i'd rather see head to museum worthy C64s than my dinky project.
    Recurring trait with the ARMSID i've noted in comparisons is that some small tweaks in regards of its filter settings appear warranted. In audio circuitry "Muddy" lows are a sign of a high-pass filter's cutoff frequency being too high. Seems like the ARMSID's programmer(s) went for a text-book perfect setting where as in practice "Real" SID's have a looser filter allowing for harsh kicks and grunts.

      I love the original 6581 a real grunt in the sound .. Armsid is as close as you can get an sure in time it will improve with firmware update's :) . if you check my latest video there is a link to my facebook group if you would like to join :) .. Thanks for watching ..

    nice. interesting. does the ARMSID play "Rodland" music? SwinSID doesn't. also "Turrican II" sounds very differently on the SwinSID.

    • @8BitRetroReFix
      @8BitRetroReFix  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not tested that .. but the armsid is 99% to a true sid so don't see why not ;)

  • @elmariachi5133
    @elmariachi5133 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well, IMHO the ArmSID is clearly not at 99% :) It's more like 85%. Only the FPGA SID can claim to be around 99% of SID authenticity.
    The Nano btw. I would categorize at about 65%.
    At the moment the ArmSID clearly is the best SID replacement in regards of price to performance ratio. But with the current work by D. Mantione, who is reverse engineering the SwinSID Nano's firmware, so people can improve on the code, it might become possible for the Nano to get close enough to the ArmSID to become the better alternative, as it's just somewhat cheaper and might sound about equally good with some optimizations :)
    The biggest issue of the ArmSID btw IMHO is that annoying overly strong vibrato it has, making it sound like an old, worn out tape deck that cannot play with constant speed anymore.

      Correct :) ... northing beats the real sid tho 👌
