  • A friend interested in an Ultimate 64, has asked me what are the differences of having real SIDs and the FPGA UltiSid. I made this video for him.

At least in this song, I vastly prefer how it sounds with the 6581 one, even though apparently it was made for the 8580. The bass just sounds broken and annoying in the 8580 version, detracting from the other parts of the song. Crazy to imagine that it was written for the 8580.

If you want a good spot to tell the differences try 1:20 and 1:54 for the same sample. UltiSid sounds a little quieter and has less of a bass boomy feeling than the combined 6581 and 8580.

Does the combined chip sound better, or am I just hearing 'things'?

To my ears, the 6581 sounds muffled whereas the 8580 sounds more clear in the high frequencies. Maybe it's because this song was written for the 8580.
The combined 6581 + 8580 demo sounds the best in this example, imho.
And the UltiSID may not sound as authentic (obviously, since the other two are the real deal), but on a one-to-one comparison I actually like it's sound the best, especially when the composition becomes more complex with many voices competing for the ear. UltiSID seems to have more separation between the various voices.

Filter differences are well heard on bass track, and that 6581 sounds too muffled to my liking, must be R4 revision. I have 6581 R3, which is now defective, but back when it worked I took recordings of it including this song, and it's a lot closer to 8580 here. There seems to be huge difference between 6581 R3 and 6581 R4.

I had the white commodore and my cousin had the brown one. And I always thought his c64 had a faulty Sid chip but it was the old version of it

    • @DarioNeodi

It was faulty somehow, the 6581 had a lot of production faults... But chiptuner used those "unintended features" at their advantage.

With which version of the firmware was this video made? It is useful to always specify it, as there are improvements over time. :-)

Original 6581, no firmware, no grotesque pinny sound, just sweet sounds.
Listen to the tracks from Ultima IV, it just sounds wrong on the 8580.

  • @illegalquantity

The 6581 is more clear. Stronger accompaniments and efects.
The 8580 is not so clear, the sounds a bit washed together. The bass is totally different, but this is the bass which the composer made for this music.
The combined chips are louder and less clear than a single 6581. Nothing else noticed.
The UltiSID 8580 is almost identical to 8580 but a bit louder? I guess.
Verdict: I prefer the 6581 except if the music is composed for the 8580. I don't like the other solutions.
