    Regarding games cooking for too long, this can also mean that large portions of the game were scrapped and had to be redone. This could be due to poor planning by the designers or executive meddling, but the result is the same: a game supposedly in development for several years coming out looking like it was cobbled together at the last minute.

      Ehh… yes and no. Obviously 3rd parties help, but they also only have one device now which is in their favour. If you look at their 1st party (and 3rd party exclusive) offerings, they have about 1 release per month. That’s WAY more than we ever got with the Wii U, and I’m pretty sure more than the Wii U and 3DS combined. We would not get a Wii U level release schedule if their console failed. You’d get like 2-3 major games on Wii U in a year, and with Switch you’d that every season. On average, since the summer is slow but fall/winter get stacked.

    When talking about the Switch's lack of gimmick, you actually forgot about it's two gimmicks, which is fitting because so did everyone else: the JoyCon's HD-Rumble, and the IFR-camera on the bottom of the right one. The only games I know of that actually use those are 1-2 Switch, a few minigames in Super Mario Party, and Nintendo Labo.

    • @dpackerman4203
      @dpackerman4203 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

      The thing about the HD-rumble is it’s easy to ignore it if it’s not actually that good. Once Nintendo realized it’s not a very good gimmick, they just stopped using it. Really hard to do that if your gimmick is the main feature of your console (i.e. Wii U gamepad)

      I've seen plenty of games utilize the HD rumble. But it's just a little extra, not something that's ever used as a core gameplay mechanic. Really it's on par with stereoscopic 3D. It can add just a little extra to the experience, but if you choose not to use it you can completely forget it exists.
      But I think it's also one of those things people take for granted even when it is on simply because it's so unobtrusive it can go unnoticed.

    For Tears of the Kingdom, thanks to the GDC presentation, we now know why it didn't fix a lot of Breath of the Wild's problems. Most fans I suspect imagined that TOTK would add on top of BOTW; adding back in everything BOTW had sacrificed to achieve its vast open world and complex physics engine. However, the Zelda team confirmed in a GDC presentation this year that the goal of TOTK was to *double down* on the vast open world and the complex physics engine; hence the sky, the depths, the caves, and ultrahand.
    The presentation also confirmed that the thing that took the most time was ultrahand, as it meant making literally every object in the game into a physics object. Ask anyone who works in software development, and they will tell you that they're amazed that Nintendo managed to implement ultrahand within six years.

      I'm sure that it's quite the technical feat, but I really don't care about feats, I just want good gameplay and content. I'm sure Nintendo is proud of their achievement and all that but it's just underwhelming that that's the only thing that seems to have had actual effort and attention put into it. The team spent so much time focusing on developing a gimmick that will at most give you only a few hours of entertainment, but then you want to see what the rest of the game has to offer and the content just feels extremely undercooked by comparison because they spent (and imho wasted) all that time building the perfect physics engine that I ultimately just do not care about as a player. I'm sorry to say but I expect more than that from a Zelda game, since standards have been set and my expectations have not been met.

    4:00 - The biggest disconnect here is called Time Investment. Mario Kart takes roughly the same amount of time no matter how many players are going at once, and that all depends on how many races everyone wants to do. Mario Party on the other hand takes *longer* the more people are involved. One game typically takes at least an hour on normal settings (20 Turns), but everyone navigating menus and strategizing and having to be ready to play the mini-game and that's not even accounting for a break to get a snack, or go to the bathroom, or having that one player who *will not get off their phone and doesn't know what's going on anymore by the time it's their turn.* So.. nah, nah, bad take.

      @@chillmadude That's two entirely different markets, for one. A movie generally doesn't ask you to do more than sit there and absorb what's being presented to you, a video game on the other hand is something meant to be engaged with multiple times at a certain rate of frequency, staying power is what determines a game's relevancy nowadays, whereas with a movie, you can generally decide after one viewing if you'd want to engage with it again. It's not even comparing apples to oranges, it's comparing apples to meat, they're just not even close to the same ballpark.
      as a side note, and this has nothing to do with anything, really but it bugs me, "centuries" would imply that theatrical films have been this way for hundreds of years, while most major films didn't really start even being two hours until around 1996 or so.

      Now, as stupid as nintendo is, they cannot fail. Amongst the big 3 they are the last bastion of simply making good games, nothing absurd or revolutionary, but just good fun games. The worst nintendo games in recent years I'd say is still significantly better than some of the best that whole other studios are putting out (gamefreak aside because they're also one of those outdated awful companies). My issue with the whole "Totk doesn't fix Botw's issues" thing, is that there is a clear difference of opinion on what botw's "issues" actually were, and many people, myself included, simply do not agree that things like weapon durability, shrines, or story structure were ever "issues" in botw. those things are part of botw's core mechanical identity, just as much as motion controls were to skyward sword. and like Skyward Sword, I find it just doesn't really work to call those "flaws of game design" and not just a lack of personal preference on behalf of the person speaking.
    I will defend skyward sword's motion controls to my dying day, because I simply do not agree that they or many of skyward's other oft criticized features were "flawed" or badly designed. I think thats much more a matter of whether or not you personally liked them, not a matter of Skyward having some core design flaw, in the same way I think disliking weapon durability or shrines in Botw and totk is a matter of personal preference. I'm aware that the Wii's motion controls were spotty and the switch's motion controls are better in some ways and worse in others, but I just do not agree that even the worst of the motion functionality was enough to make it bad design.
    And thats why I take such issue with that particular totk criticism. I don't think it was ever a reasonable assumption that totk would somehow not be the game it always promised to be. and to be honest, it seems to me that no Zelda game is ever good enough when its actually released. the Zelda community seems to have a very bad memory about how basically every 3d Zelda release following Majora's Mask, was met with backlash, and maintained bad reputations right up until the next game came out and the cycle starts over again. Wind Waker is too cartoony, twilight princess is too dark, Skyward Sword's too linear, Botw's too open, Totk's too much like botw, it just keeps going and going every single time. nobody ever seems to learn their lesson and we just repeat the same discourse over and again. It's exhausting.

      For me, BOTW's main issues were that the story misisions were a underwhelming, weapon durability made late-game combat not worth it, too many of the shrines were repetitive like the tests of strength, and the ending felt anti-climactic. All of those were pretty much fixed in TOTK.

      @@vianabdullah2837 Actually that does point out something I didn't articulate well in my initial comment, which was that I also think Totk improves upon botw by iterating on its systems rather than abandoning them or inverting them.
      I should have said that I absolutely think botw had tons of room for improvement and I think Totk totally delivered on that front in ways I couldn't have ever thought of myself.

      Sorry if my tweet didn't convey exactly what I meant, I do agree ToTK took a lot of what BotW did and improved on it, but in many ways it still failed imo, for one, enemy variety is still severly lacking, whereas in old games you'd find many different enemies in different biomes, these two games have the same 4 basic mobs in every biome, which I kinda get, but outside of elemental variants of common enemies (which only boil don't to keese, lizalfos, chuchus and Talus) there is very little in terms of endemic enemies, funnily enough the Desert is the sole exception in both games, with having unique mobs such as the Molduga and Gibdos, but beyond that, the games lack some solid or memorable identity in terms of enemies outside of "ice" or "fire" and so on.
      Part of me was expecting that since the core mechanics and such were already done, more aspects where BotW lacked, such as this would be vastly improved on, but we ended up getting a few entirely new mobs and sub-bosses and some elemental variants to go along them, and since the world was mostly the same, it really made the world feel that much similar because once you took a small look, you'd know what kind of new enemies you'd find, I'll say though, Gibdos were a huge highlight for me.
      I gotta give a shoutout to Ultra-hand because that alone impressed me greatly and I do think it's insane they made it work as well as it does, so yeah.
      But beyond that it's just that the development took far too long for what "brand new content" we ended up getting, I get that development is way more complicated than that, I mainly blame the lock-down for letting such expectations boil at a faster rate than the actual development of the game, if ToTK hadn't have such a long dev-time, I'd be completely fine with it, I still am, but something about that particularly long dev-time irks me a bit, not to point fingers at the game itself, the game is brilliant, but there is certainly a dissonance there for me and many others.
      And finally, yeah, I left the tweet a bit ambigious on purpose because everyone has the different critiques on the game and just so you know, I don't think durability and openess were issues, but I worded it to fit almost every opinion out there, sorta.

    The wait for Skyward Sword was actually 2 years since Spirit Tracks came out in 2009. Also I'd probably take a slightly longer development cycle over a rushed product like Mario Sunshine or The Wind Waker. While they're both still great games, you can see a lot of the cracks in development and really held back games that could've been masterpieces.
    The problem with Zelda is they announce things way too early so the wait feels much longer and the expectations start to build up. Whereas the next 3D Mario doesn't have as much of a burden because even though it's been 7 years since Odyssey, they have not announced any new game so people aren't constantly speculating on what they want it to be like. Big fan how Mario Wonder and now Echoes of Wisdom are only announced a few month before their release.

    Mario Party is definitely underutilized. A lot of people really like Mario Party, and they kind of ruined Mario Party’s reputation with 9 and 10.
    I feel like Nintendo has been making a lot of really good games lately. A failure by Nintendo would not humble them in the ways that people want them to improve.

However, even if I'm wrong & the game is Nintendo's first major flops for Zelda (unless your strange & actually count the CDI games, that where not actually made by Nintendo I might add) I don't think it will be the downfall or end of Zelda. 3:00 this is completely false. You are right about Luigi Mansion 2’s boot out system, but Luigi’s mansion 1 was insanely linear too. You could have some sorts of freedom with hidden rooms, but it’s pretty railroaded in terms of what rooms you have to go through. 2 is also not great with this, and the mission format actually makes it worse in some regards, but I can’t say that the first game was open and you could do what you wanted. 2 does have specific tasks that you have to do with backtracking as well, though there are some explorative aspects, like finding more gold, gems, and boos, but like the first game, it doesn’t exactly take away from how linear the game is structurally.
    For the LM1 amusement park analogy, It’s more like an amusement park where you could only go to attractions after doing a specific task and you had to go to them in a specific order, not the same as just going to where you wanted. The only difference is that unlike 2, there isn’t a boot out system so you don’t have to go back to the entrance to go to new rides.

    • @spencers5898

      LM3 is *also* extremely linear. You have to do the floors in a specific order, and the floors themselves have a very linear structure- you basically just progress from puzzle room to puzzle room with little deviation.
      At a certain point we have to acknowledge that this is just what Luigi's Mansion is as a franchise. What makes it fun ultimately comes down to how enjoyable it is to play on a moment-to-moment basis, and LM2 actually shines in this respect.
      I vastly preferred LM2 to LM3 because I felt LM3 leaned too hard into being a puzzle game, to the detriment of the ghost fighting aspect. Fights in LM3 are too short and too samey- you get the same basic green ghost enemies way too often. LM2 gives you more variety and features combat more frequently, giving you a more dynamic experience.

      The original Luigi’s Mansion at least gave you the illusion of free exploration. You could find secret rooms and secret bosses. If you examined things you could find key items like Mario’s stuff which gave the game more character. It really gave the feeling of exploring a creepy haunted house. Plus, there was much less padding than one or two. The only padding was the black out section which actually changed the gameplay and removed any safety.

    The thing about the “Nintendo needs to fail” argument is that right now, Nintendo is doing EXACTLY what they SHOULD be doing. So much so, they’re currently the shining example compared to their competitors.
    Yes their prices suck for some games, yes they’re taking way too long to make old games available, but they’re also firing on all cylinders giving us the games we want. Unless Nintendo backpedals and starts spitting out Paper Mario Sticker Star-like games again, I want them to be as successful as possible so they continue on the track they’re on now.

    • @Eclipsed_Embers
      @Eclipsed_Embers หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      honestly the weirdest thing about the whole "Nintendo needs to fail" argument is that... like... they seem to want Nintendo to fail so that they'll make good games faster... but if Nintendo was actually genuinely being too slow or making bad games then they would be failing. the fact that Nintendo isn't failing means that the whole argument for "Nintendo needs to fail" is built on a false premise. the fact that Nintendo isn't failing means that they're currently in the place that people want them to be.
      if Nintendo was already being too slow and making bad games a failure would likely make things worse before they get better. the Wii U era lasted 5 years before we finally got the switch (double checking the dates left me really surprised that we've been on the Switch era for 7 years now...), and I'd argue that the Wii U era was strongest at the start (admittedly potential bias of a Pikmin fan who only wanted the Wii U because Pikmin 3 was a launch title). if Nintendo ends up in a failure era again, that's probably another 5 years of us having to deal with a failing Nintendo before we actually see any good come of it.

    Right out the gate that first one is frustrating, because on the one hand, like Arlo I can see the both sides of the argument, where one side likes to take their time, but also that feeds into FOMO. You don't need to play every single game that comes out, and there's plenty of time to pick what you want and relax with the game you picked from these libraries. I don't understand wanting to immediately drop something to play something else because it's newer, and I also don't understand the inability to multitask games. My issue with the drip feed is it feels like intentional gatekeeping keeping paying users on the hook for maybe getting the rerelease they want when Nintendo could just splatter their entire library on there and defeat the purpose of pirating their games. While we're waiting Nintendo gets to swing its dong around killing "pirates" online whenever they pop up while not actually providing a service that they could do right now that would kill the necessity of it stone dead.
    Also, literally all three Luigi's Mansion games were phenomenal and I had a blast with every one. They're all good for different reasons.

  • @thatdanjamesguy.330
    @thatdanjamesguy.330 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +28

    My hot take: Switch Online’s subscription model is great. It just shouldn’t be the only option, and the drip feed is too extreme.
    It’s great because it’s much more effective at getting kids into classic Nintendo games than a Virtual Console would be nowadays. On the Wii, it was the best way to get great games on the cheap. $5 for Super Mario Bros. 3, $8 for Super Metroid, $10 for Ocarina of Time? Awesome! But now with free games like Fortnite, kids will probably gravitate toward those before spending money on old titles.
    But if a whole library of classic games is included with the subscription they already bought to play games online, then hey, might as well check out the older Marios, at least. And that can be a gateway into playing and enjoying the other all-time greats.
    On the Switch 2, with NSO having all its games so far from the start, and with the first Switch kids starting to grow up, I think we’ll start to see this strategy pay off.

    Edit: And there's conversations to be had about at what point devs should just "release the game," but THEY should be having those conversations, not us, because before release we don't have the info to say anything of value. • @demigodgamer8517
      @demigodgamer8517 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      I'm of the mind that part of why some folks who were let down by TOTK (not all, of course, but some) is because the inflated dev time due to COVID and the extra time they took to polish it led some people to think it was gonna be more than it was. And what it is is already a lot, mind, but I think some people saw that it took a brand new Zelda cycle to make rather than being out in just a few years, and assumed that they were going even bigger. If TOTK had been able to release in 2021 in the same state we got it, I think some of those folks wouldn't have been let down. The other factor here is that, as much as I love the BotW/TotK style, there are plenty of fans who want something a bit more classic and know that, given the average length of Zelda dev times, it probably won't be until the middle of the Switch 2 before they can roll the dice on getting something new. Compared to if it had been a 2021 game, the new Zelda could have been that system's SSBU.

      It makes no sense to try and definitively claim if TotK fixed BotW's issues, because all of us had different issues with BotW.
      I took issue with the weapon fragility system in BotW and not wanting to waste good weapons on weak enemies. TotK fixed it for me because I can make my own good weapons whenever I want by fusing monster horns, so I don't feel bad about using and losing weapons anymore.
      Some people had the same issue with BotW and feel that TotK didn't go far enough to address it. Some people didn't have that issue with BotW at all. 🤷‍♂️
      Another issue I had with BotW was rain and being unable to climb. TotK didn't fix this at all. You have to play most of the game and explore most of the map to do all the side quests to get the rain climbing gear, and then it doesn't work! You still have to go level it up at multiple fairy fountains before it finally helps you climb in rain.

    Abandoning the Switch's innovation of swapping between tv/handheld would be disastrous, and trying to stack NEW gimmicks on top of it would just be overdesigning/cluttering/over complicating things IMO.

    Skyward Sword was better than BotW and TotK.
    The map is too big, the equipment system was flawed, enemies always determined damage not weapons, the stamina system just means you can climb over everything in the world, the dungeons were too short as dungeons and too long as puzzles, they made Zelda a disney princess, and money wasn't an option when you sell meat skewers at almost 500 Rupees a pop.
    Skyward Sword had more personality, you cared about the world, its characters, and while the motion control is an aquired taste, it didn't take away from the game too much, and it was linear with clear boundaries to overcome by either changing equipment or figuring out a problem a new way. Plus, Skyloft as a concept was nothing like Termina or Koholint could ever have been. (couldn't put it in 255 characters on twitter ^^')

      Agreed, except for the Disney princess part. Skyward Zelda fits that bill too.
      I will also add that while I'm currently enjoying my run through OOT3D, I have noticed some of the same issues part. The characters aren't special outside of Sheik and Malon, some of the exploration stuff is stupid, and, man, those first three dungeons were lame. Still, I quite like it.

    I appreciate not wanting to be overwhelmed by NSO releases, but the drip feed is madness. There's a better way to introduce games gradually: have the whole library available, and have a curated recommendations front page. That way you can introduce games slowly to people who don't know them, and have everything available to everyone else. The big issue with the dripfeed as recommendation: most of the games posted to NSO are garbage. Let's be honest, the NES had, like, 5 good games--toss that in your spicy take salad.

    I feel like the "Nintendo should fail" attitude only leads down a slippery slope and none of it is good for the customer until POSSIBLY the very end.
    If Nintendo's newest console were to flop, that means that people aren't playing those games, meaning those franchises start taking hits, people on the old hardware aren't getting new games, and things kinda just go downhill. Imagine if Nintendo released the Switch 2 and Kid Icarus Uprising HD, the Switch 2 flops and subsequently takes KIU with it, leading to Nintendo going "Well, I guess people are done with this franchise," and relegating it to the same bin as Star Fox and F-ZERO.
    I can understand wanting Nintendo to be humbled a bit, making them take their time to really polish up their stuff, but there's a VERY fine line between being humbled and being completely destroyed. I'd love to see more from some franchises (Pokemon), but I also fear what would happen if a boycott were to be successful and the next big game failed. What kind of message would that really send? With companies like Nintendo, I don't think it would be a good one.

Some were successful some were not. I'm glad I got to live through the "gimmick-y" era of the Wii and DS, but I think we can leave that behind us now. It was cool. I feel like after a game console has had it's due, it should be remembered for having provided a unique experience and not just games that can be emulated or ported to different platforms. Not to say devs should go out of the way to make consoles with features specifically to prevent them from being compatible later on, but if it allows for a cool new feature for the user to experience (like the Glasses Free 3D of the 3DS or motion controls) I think it's awesome!

    the GB, GBC, and GBA effectively didn't have any gimmicks, and they're easy to look back to when you want pure and simple Nintendo games. I personally really also like the DS, but more for the added XY buttons. Nintendo doesn't need gimmicks. Guitar Hero, DDR, and DK Bongos put the gimmicks into external peripherals rather than baking them into the console itself, but the downside to this is that Guitar Hero controllers can be hard to find nowadays for those who want to get into Clone Hero. ultimately these things should be "weird controller enhanced" rather than "weird controller required" as much as possible.

    I can definitely sympathize with that "Nintendo should be humbled" take. Honestly, for me, the question, for a long time, wasn't, "Will the Switch be the best selling console", it was "Do I personally want this grumpy, fan-hating, over-pricing company to have the best selling console?" And the answer was no.
    But then I compared it to the competition, and realized I don't think I want Sony to have the best selling console either, and I honestly don't want Microsoft to have the best selling console either. If either of them were the kings instead, I'd have to put up with their garbage instead. It is really just a matter of picking your poison, or the market picking its poison I guess.
    So, the answer to my question is still no, but its a far more ambivalent no than the passionate no it used to be. Because compared to everyone else who could be at the top, Nintendo's poison starts to look more palatable.

    I can see where the person was coming from by saying Kirby Star Allies was so good because it was so respectful to the legacy of the Kirby fanchise, however I would argue that the way the game first initally released was the OPPOSITE. Although a lot of Kirby fans loved the DLC waves because the content in itself, the game even being allowed to be released in such a state, and the fanservice being gatekept behind DLC is not respectful whatsoever. It was not respectful to the legacy of all the games that lead up to Star Allies to release something half finished with gameplay and design flaws.

    • @GameAW1
      @GameAW1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The post-launch free DLC wasn't gatekept though; it was unfinished and intended for post-launch. Not only that but in no definition could Star Allies be considered an incomplete game when it launched with literally everything every other Kirby game had when they came out in that general era: A main campaign, a second, harder campaign, a third campaign where you play as someone else entirely (merged with the Helper to Hero concept from Super Star Ultra), an Arena, a True Arena, a handful of minigames, a bunch of collectibles you gather either randomly or through finding secrets in the levels, all of it was there. Name me one thing that wasn't there that other Kirby games had.
      You can argue that it wasn't designed the best, but its objectively untrue that it was an incomplete game when it came out. It was complete when it released, and they only added onto it after that. Its not like Mario Strikers where it was so anorexic in content for a full-priced game that you could get at best an hour for your $60.

    I've 2 cents to throw in on the "gimmicks" discussion. You said yourself that if a "gimmick" is a good enough feature that actually enhances the games on the system then it isn't a gimmick, it's just a good feature. However, the nature of gimmicks is that they are a risk that pushes the capabilities of what's there, and new features aren't developed without the risk of them just turning out to be gimmicks, and you aren't always sure which ones are going to stick. Is the whole controller motion controls a gimmick? Perhaps for the Wii and Wii U, they may have pushed it too far, but just about every system and controller these days supports some amount of gyro control, which is very similar to motion controls. And heck, gyro control itself was a risk of just being a gimmick at one point. Being able to connect the handheld to a big screen? No one really considered it till Nintendo did it with the Switch, and there was a risk that people wouldn't be all for that, it could have just been a gimmick, but we are calling it a feature. The DS's dual screen, gimmick or feature? People seem to think Nintendo did a good thing there.
    The point I'm getting at is that new features take the risk of just being gimmicks, and consistently it is Nintendo that is pushing the envelop to develop new features. Everyone else worries about optimizing the features that exists and don't do anything new. I'm in favor of Nintendo pushing new gimmicks because that is how we get new features introduced to the world.

    I think Palworld as it is is just a foundation. You have a gameplay system, but without objectives and a strong opposing force for the player to overcome, it will fade into obscurity. Another failure on the level of the WIi U could be catastrophic.
