@@modkip25 I think the switch 2 will be a lot like the 3DS. A gimmick that doesn’t get in the way/hinder the gameplay, and it will be successful, but not nearly as successful as the switch. Like the 3DS was to the DS
I’d have laughed harder if I hadn’t noticed the person who made that comment was Kane (I think the same one who edits the videos). Still hilarious though.
Regarding games cooking for too long, this can also mean that large portions of the game were scrapped and had to be redone. This could be due to poor planning by the designers or executive meddling, but the result is the same: a game supposedly in development for several years coming out looking like it was cobbled together at the last minute.
Its why I'm more a top down Zelda fan as the 3d open world series is the poster child for game being allowed to cook and being a disappointment in someway
I get the want for Nintendo to have a fire out under them with a ‘failure’ era but I think people forget how barren most of the Wii U era was. We as consumers would also have to go through a period of worse games that come out less often.
not to mention how much that weighs on the developers themselves, the gamecube era that was also a very unsuccessful period was known to also have great games but also in more recent years we've been learning how much they had to crunch and destroy themselves to make ends meet over there
Ehh… yes and no. Obviously 3rd parties help, but they also only have one device now which is in their favour. If you look at their 1st party (and 3rd party exclusive) offerings, they have about 1 release per month. That’s WAY more than we ever got with the Wii U, and I’m pretty sure more than the Wii U and 3DS combined. We would not get a Wii U level release schedule if their console failed. You’d get like 2-3 major games on Wii U in a year, and with Switch you’d that every season. On average, since the summer is slow but fall/winter get stacked.
Exactly. We'd have to go through, at minimum, 5 years of fewer games and games of lesser quality just to get one year of a few more, better quality games. It doesn't compute
HOWEVER, I'm in a longer game drought with the Switch then I ever was with the Wii U....I haven't gotten a Switch game since Mario Wonder last October....And Mario Party in October this year is the next game I'm getting...A FULL YEAR without a single game to play on my Switch, at worst on the Wii U, I waited 6 months or so.
Spicy take salad seems like a problem because of course people are going to make their opinions as controversial as possible in hopes of getting it noticed, likely doesn't mean they actually think that though
My opinions are geneuie I'm not gonna say something I don't believe. Though I may say it in the most offensive way possible just to see people triggered
When talking about the Switch's lack of gimmick, you actually forgot about it's two gimmicks, which is fitting because so did everyone else: the JoyCon's HD-Rumble, and the IFR-camera on the bottom of the right one. The only games I know of that actually use those are 1-2 Switch, a few minigames in Super Mario Party, and Nintendo Labo.
The thing about the HD-rumble is it’s easy to ignore it if it’s not actually that good. Once Nintendo realized it’s not a very good gimmick, they just stopped using it. Really hard to do that if your gimmick is the main feature of your console (i.e. Wii U gamepad)
I've seen plenty of games utilize the HD rumble. But it's just a little extra, not something that's ever used as a core gameplay mechanic. Really it's on par with stereoscopic 3D. It can add just a little extra to the experience, but if you choose not to use it you can completely forget it exists. But I think it's also one of those things people take for granted even when it is on simply because it's so unobtrusive it can go unnoticed.
As long as the switch 2 has a better name, indicate that it's a sequel, not an add on like the Wii U and allows backwards comparability, it will sell well. Not switch and Wii numbers but decently well.
Mario Party's biggest flaw is a lack of maps. Mario Kart games nowadays start with 30+. Mario Party games get 5 or 6. I can 100% see Mario Party being a lot bigger if there were more maps. Edit: Related, Mario Party needs DLC.
9 think they have been trying to figure out how to reformat it for a while. Meanwhile fans want botha sort of drop in drop out online multi-player. But alos one where they sot there for hours playing max turn woth strangers online.
For Tears of the Kingdom, thanks to the GDC presentation, we now know why it didn't fix a lot of Breath of the Wild's problems. Most fans I suspect imagined that TOTK would add on top of BOTW; adding back in everything BOTW had sacrificed to achieve its vast open world and complex physics engine. However, the Zelda team confirmed in a GDC presentation this year that the goal of TOTK was to *double down* on the vast open world and the complex physics engine; hence the sky, the depths, the caves, and ultrahand. The presentation also confirmed that the thing that took the most time was ultrahand, as it meant making literally every object in the game into a physics object. Ask anyone who works in software development, and they will tell you that they're amazed that Nintendo managed to implement ultrahand within six years.
Albeit a technical feat to be sure-was it really worth it? The game was just not fun for one who has already explored that Hyrule. TotK launching 6 years after a game from 2017 that was first shown off in 2014-that's almost 10 years with exposure to the same world of Hyrule
@@austinfondren2590I don’t speak for everyone, but I had a blast with it. Granted I only started playing BotW in 2019 so my exposure to that Hyrule is less than that of others, but I don’t have a problem with revisiting old locations. In fact I found it quite interesting to see familiar places in new contexts. And Ultrahand is one of the most impressive and fun features I have played with in a game. I still play TotK just to mess around with the mechanics and engineer stuff that somehow works.
@@austinfondren2590thats really subjective. Ive put hunderds of hours in botw. And hunderds of hours in totk. Those hours in totk are some of the most fun ive had in a videogame.
I'm sure that it's quite the technical feat, but I really don't care about feats, I just want good gameplay and content. I'm sure Nintendo is proud of their achievement and all that but it's just underwhelming that that's the only thing that seems to have had actual effort and attention put into it. The team spent so much time focusing on developing a gimmick that will at most give you only a few hours of entertainment, but then you want to see what the rest of the game has to offer and the content just feels extremely undercooked by comparison because they spent (and imho wasted) all that time building the perfect physics engine that I ultimately just do not care about as a player. I'm sorry to say but I expect more than that from a Zelda game, since standards have been set and my expectations have not been met.
Make it Switch 2, release Switch Sports 3 EX+2 Remix, put it on the console, make it rock. I know it's hard to do so. Still make it happen. Make it rock.
Honestly I'd like to see a DS style line again. They were so much more mobile and had much better battery life. Switch is just too much of a pain in the ass to bring anywhere/use undocked.
Tears just needed a more fleshed out main story, in my opinion. Every single Sage having nearly identical dialogue at the end of the dungeons was lame. I wanted to know more about the original Sages. Only one of them was even a named character. Each dungeon clear should have taken the player back to a corresponding mission in Early Hyrule with Zelda as the main character.
Also the new sky and depths should have been more fleshed out, and more focused if that helps. The dungeons shouldn't be obsessed with an open approach, diluting their puzzles kills the whole point.
Completely agree. Also, get rid of the name “secret stones” like they’re SO COOL and SO POWERFUL name them ANYTHING more interesting I was also hoping for more story/lore and world building especially in the biggest Zelda game ever with elements from every game and where explanations for how we got here are essentially nonexistent “it’s been a long time” isn’t narratively satisfying enough for me
The dungeons could have been more in-depth, too, but for the most part, they are more fun than divine beasts aside from that sorry excuse for a water temple. Yeah, the story was pretty poorly thought out this time around. But my biggest problem with TOTK is that it makes BOTW obsolete or otherwise erases it's memory. It seems everyone in the game except the main characters forgot about Link, and the former divine challenges have vanished without explanation.
The entire game was doomed to be fundamentally bad the moment they decided to add a crappy nuts and bolts gimmick instead of fixing any of the issues with BotW.
4:00 - The biggest disconnect here is called Time Investment. Mario Kart takes roughly the same amount of time no matter how many players are going at once, and that all depends on how many races everyone wants to do. Mario Party on the other hand takes *longer* the more people are involved. One game typically takes at least an hour on normal settings (20 Turns), but everyone navigating menus and strategizing and having to be ready to play the mini-game and that's not even accounting for a break to get a snack, or go to the bathroom, or having that one player who *will not get off their phone and doesn't know what's going on anymore by the time it's their turn.* So.. nah, nah, bad take.
yet the movie industry has been working under the assumption that people will be willing to take 2 and a half hours out of their day to sit down and watch what they made for centuries, and the industry is still alive today
@@chillmadude That's two entirely different markets, for one. A movie generally doesn't ask you to do more than sit there and absorb what's being presented to you, a video game on the other hand is something meant to be engaged with multiple times at a certain rate of frequency, staying power is what determines a game's relevancy nowadays, whereas with a movie, you can generally decide after one viewing if you'd want to engage with it again. It's not even comparing apples to oranges, it's comparing apples to meat, they're just not even close to the same ballpark. as a side note, and this has nothing to do with anything, really but it bugs me, "centuries" would imply that theatrical films have been this way for hundreds of years, while most major films didn't really start even being two hours until around 1996 or so.
I'm all for Activision blizzard, EA and Ubisoft failing. Yes it hurts employees, but the companies themselves are ruining the industry which bleeds into every other company and its employees. Heard good things about the studio that made red fall, but then because of other studios' financial success through shitty games they had to make that abomination. Now, as stupid as nintendo is, they cannot fail. Amongst the big 3 they are the last bastion of simply making good games, nothing absurd or revolutionary, but just good fun games. The worst nintendo games in recent years I'd say is still significantly better than some of the best that whole other studios are putting out (gamefreak aside because they're also one of those outdated awful companies). If nintendo falls, then all we have left is indies. Indies are great, but amongst the titans in the industry they'd just be bought up and spit out.
At the same time a company may hire temps to work on something and then let them go when the product is released. It happens every year and with every company. There has to be something written in the contracts somewhere that let's them do that and that means that people agreed to those conditions. Yeah it's slimey for a company to let someone go if they are good at their job and make a hot seller, but at the same time i've never known companies to keep the same people around for longer than a year or so. I'm seeing buyouts and layoffs constantly. Doesn't make it right. That's the way it is. I'm sorry. I just keep seeing this subject pop up in articles and then randos in chats complaining about it constantly and to be honest i'm sick of it.
Yeah I liked Palworld for about 10 hours and then it got really stale. I know it’s not really true, but the game feels like an asset flip. It takes so many direct features from other games and mixes them together in a way that is fun, but didn’t keep me invested for a while.
we compare this indie game game to one of the worlds largest IP's. yeah of course it is going to be a bit bland, now they have some money we could see if palworld 2 is a thing. but gamefreak wasn't doing pokemon too many favours either, SV was kinda dull and i don't know how much of that was incompetence or the hardware limitations.
@elliottb7009 I'm not a pal world hater or anything, but there are plenty of other indie games that don't have the same asset flip appearance and have their own unique compelling art styles. Like just because it's an indie game doesn't mean that criticism doesn't have some truth to it
@@consensuslphiskI think the fact that they were able to take a bunch of these ideas from different games and put them all in one game without nearly as much thought into how they would play into the world building and the mechanics would bounce off of each other, yet it still works, is just a testament to how much people crave a straightforward gaming experience with monster taming and Co-op and exploration. People have been wanting something like this for so long, and nobody has given it to them. The closest anyone has ever gotten is Ark Survival, and that game is far too punishing and has an incredibly toxic community and gameplay incentives for the majority of players.
@@elliottb7009 I never compared it to Pokemon, other indie titles have had what I mentioned I'm not saying it's a bad game but there's nothing to remember outside of its creatures
My issue with the whole "Totk doesn't fix Botw's issues" thing, is that there is a clear difference of opinion on what botw's "issues" actually were, and many people, myself included, simply do not agree that things like weapon durability, shrines, or story structure were ever "issues" in botw. those things are part of botw's core mechanical identity, just as much as motion controls were to skyward sword. and like Skyward Sword, I find it just doesn't really work to call those "flaws of game design" and not just a lack of personal preference on behalf of the person speaking. I will defend skyward sword's motion controls to my dying day, because I simply do not agree that they or many of skyward's other oft criticized features were "flawed" or badly designed. I think thats much more a matter of whether or not you personally liked them, not a matter of Skyward having some core design flaw, in the same way I think disliking weapon durability or shrines in Botw and totk is a matter of personal preference. I'm aware that the Wii's motion controls were spotty and the switch's motion controls are better in some ways and worse in others, but I just do not agree that even the worst of the motion functionality was enough to make it bad design. And thats why I take such issue with that particular totk criticism. I don't think it was ever a reasonable assumption that totk would somehow not be the game it always promised to be. and to be honest, it seems to me that no Zelda game is ever good enough when its actually released. the Zelda community seems to have a very bad memory about how basically every 3d Zelda release following Majora's Mask, was met with backlash, and maintained bad reputations right up until the next game came out and the cycle starts over again. Wind Waker is too cartoony, twilight princess is too dark, Skyward Sword's too linear, Botw's too open, Totk's too much like botw, it just keeps going and going every single time. nobody ever seems to learn their lesson and we just repeat the same discourse over and again. It's exhausting.
For me, BOTW's main issues were that the story misisions were a underwhelming, weapon durability made late-game combat not worth it, too many of the shrines were repetitive like the tests of strength, and the ending felt anti-climactic. All of those were pretty much fixed in TOTK.
@@vianabdullah2837 Actually that does point out something I didn't articulate well in my initial comment, which was that I also think Totk improves upon botw by iterating on its systems rather than abandoning them or inverting them. I should have said that I absolutely think botw had tons of room for improvement and I think Totk totally delivered on that front in ways I couldn't have ever thought of myself.
I dont think you could say the same thing if bunch of people ate bad tasting food that was undercooked. The obly thing that matters do you like it and would you share it to others. Like for me, i was conned to buy BotW, hate it. Love me some TotK as it fixes everything i hate and it just 200% better.
Sorry if my tweet didn't convey exactly what I meant, I do agree ToTK took a lot of what BotW did and improved on it, but in many ways it still failed imo, for one, enemy variety is still severly lacking, whereas in old games you'd find many different enemies in different biomes, these two games have the same 4 basic mobs in every biome, which I kinda get, but outside of elemental variants of common enemies (which only boil don't to keese, lizalfos, chuchus and Talus) there is very little in terms of endemic enemies, funnily enough the Desert is the sole exception in both games, with having unique mobs such as the Molduga and Gibdos, but beyond that, the games lack some solid or memorable identity in terms of enemies outside of "ice" or "fire" and so on. Part of me was expecting that since the core mechanics and such were already done, more aspects where BotW lacked, such as this would be vastly improved on, but we ended up getting a few entirely new mobs and sub-bosses and some elemental variants to go along them, and since the world was mostly the same, it really made the world feel that much similar because once you took a small look, you'd know what kind of new enemies you'd find, I'll say though, Gibdos were a huge highlight for me. I gotta give a shoutout to Ultra-hand because that alone impressed me greatly and I do think it's insane they made it work as well as it does, so yeah. But beyond that it's just that the development took far too long for what "brand new content" we ended up getting, I get that development is way more complicated than that, I mainly blame the lock-down for letting such expectations boil at a faster rate than the actual development of the game, if ToTK hadn't have such a long dev-time, I'd be completely fine with it, I still am, but something about that particularly long dev-time irks me a bit, not to point fingers at the game itself, the game is brilliant, but there is certainly a dissonance there for me and many others. And finally, yeah, I left the tweet a bit ambigious on purpose because everyone has the different critiques on the game and just so you know, I don't think durability and openess were issues, but I worded it to fit almost every opinion out there, sorta.
@@dpackerman4203 my best friend and I don't talk about Zelda much because we have vastly different opinions (she thinks my favorite games are mid at best and vice versa) lol
Definitely not Nintendo needing to be humbled, but I have seen a lot of that kind of talk about Game Freak, especially after Palworld. I just wanna know what exactly is going on in Game Freak's offices, cause I feel like all of the conversations we normally have about abusive crunch and overworking developers goes out the window with Game Freak, just because Pokemon as a brand is so successful.
Workers need to stand up for themselves and unionize. No matter who they work for. A handful of American devs just unionized, decades after they should have. Japanese and worldwide devs need to learn that as well.
@@BJGvideos I'm sure many of them want to, but there are cultural issues over there that the U.S. doesn't have, and even then, Unions aren't the end-all, be-all of good working conditions.

The wait for Skyward Sword was actually 2 years since Spirit Tracks came out in 2009. Also I'd probably take a slightly longer development cycle over a rushed product like Mario Sunshine or The Wind Waker. While they're both still great games, you can see a lot of the cracks in development and really held back games that could've been masterpieces. The problem with Zelda is they announce things way too early so the wait feels much longer and the expectations start to build up. Whereas the next 3D Mario doesn't have as much of a burden because even though it's been 7 years since Odyssey, they have not announced any new game so people aren't constantly speculating on what they want it to be like. Big fan how Mario Wonder and now Echoes of Wisdom are only announced a few month before their release.
TOTK didn't really announce a lot early. All they announced is that it will be happening and it's botw 2 and then we had to wait like 4 years for anything else. I think COVID messed up all their plans for the game and without it, they wouldn't have had this problem
The idea of conjuring a massive failure to humble Nintendo is genuinely super ignorant to how much a a cruel reality that would be. We’re talking mass layoffs and downsizing from all of the growth they’ve accumulated across the Switch, imagine all of the innocent employees and creatives who would get caught in the crossfires. Nobody deserves to have that treatment just so smug weirdos on Twitter can one-up a handful of executives.
I think a cool "gimmick" for the switch two that is more of a feature would be the option to have the switch 2 communicate with the dock remotely While in handheld mode, so you can have it connect to the tv similar to the wii u gamepad *but as an optional feature for things like non splitscreen same system multiplayer and not as the key selling point*
I would love it if this sub-series of videos took opinions from TH-cam's community tab. @@randomgamer-te8op It's not about the little effort it takes to make an account, it's about it being an addictive, garbage, toxic platform many don't even wanna be a part of
A “gimmick” that could help the switch 2 a lot if it’s broadly similar to the switch 1 is the ability to stream to the dock. That would allow Wii U games to be ported easily, and make DS emulation massively simpler
"Almost every game [on the DS] found an intuitive and unobstructed use for the dual screen setup" Okay that's straight up untrue. There was so much shovelware.
Were they made worse by the dual screen setup? I'm actually asking because I can't think of many. Off the top of my head, Chibi Robo Park Patrol is the only game that comes to mind as being marginally worse with its use of touch screen, and even that's not that bad.
The DS had an absolutely enormous library, especially since there was no eShop for it. Yes, lots of shovelware, but also lots of indies and creative new IPs in addition to Nintendo's own amazing output for the system. Dozens and dozens of excellent games making use of the unique hardware
Nintendo trajectory this generation feels like it's been good for the most part. So I don't think the Switch 2 deserves to fail in order to send a message to Nintendo. They've been on the right track lately
15:00 similar idea here, but I think what it needs is a good ACCESSORY. Something like labo, but fully fleshed out, with a good concept, a good amount of good games, not too too expensive, or at least not necessary, and not obstructive to games that don't use them, and second most importantly, something *Different* than normal gameplay.
The “Nintendo failure era” hot take is nullified by simply hoping Nintendo makes good games. A failure era would lay off a ton of people and probably irreparably damage the company given the current landscape of the industry
Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon is also my favorite of the three, and I somewhat agree with both of you. The whole mission structure is not nearly as bad as you say. The missions are a perfectly fine length, and I think the game gets way too much hate for one small problem. Mario Party is definitely underutilized. A lot of people really like Mario Party, and they kind of ruined Mario Party’s reputation with 9 and 10. I feel like Nintendo has been making a lot of really good games lately. A failure by Nintendo would not humble them in the ways that people want them to improve. Mid roll ads are hilarious I feel like this is more of an overhyping situation. They teased ToTK for a long time, way longer than it usually takes to release a game after it’s ready. If they just hadn’t announced it until they were ready to announce the title it would have had even higher reception. Yes, the DS gimmick was good, but the Wii U had the same gimmick. I prefer the Switch’s gimmick of a handheld and tv presentation. It allowed for more accessible games. The Switch’s gimmick works fine. Nintendo has revolutionized enough. That’s enough opinions from me for now
that person who said the ds is the best gimmick is absolutely correct, ive had the opinion that the ds had my favorite library out of any system ever and that perfectly encapsulates why thats the case, they mentioned hotel dusk and rhythm heaven which are perfect examples but going further with it games like elite beat agents/ouendan, professor layton, 999, the world ends with you, mario hoops 3 on 3 and heck even smaller stuff like the ds pokemon games are so tailor made for the system and the ways they use it to each game's advantage are just simply wonderful
The gaming community has become so miserable lately, it’s starting to make me angry. I love video games, want to enjoy them and cherish them, you guys can’t tell me what companies to like and what companies to not like, I know Nintendo has gotten very greedy lately, but they make amazing games. Some companies are greedy, but it’s not bad to like the things that they make. Think about it, Nintendo has listened to fans, and revitalised the Mario series, but yet fans still hate them, people have too high standards nowadays, you guys need to learn how to enjoy things.
Regarding the greed, I think Nintendo, as well as Sony (Microsoft too, but I haven't cared about them since Kinect), could stand to be humbled. Just look at the absence of Nintendo Selects and Playstation Hits. Sure, they owe us nothing, but we don't owe them anything either.
Personally, id rather Nintendo just keeps pleasing customers. Honestly, I wasn't expecting a new Zelda this year & we are getting Echoes of Wisdom so im good.
@@austinfondren2590 The first Zelda I ever got day of launch was Majora's Mask for the N64. I haven't regretted playing all 20 installments of this series to date (plus many remakes like the more recent Links Awakening remake for Switch, spinoffs like Links Crossbow training on Wii, & guest appearances like Link in Soul Caliber 2 on the Game Cube ) & I don't plan to stop now. Now having said that, I can respect someone for not pre-ordering the game like me & waiting on reviews. After all, several series don't deliver consistently deliver like Zelda & I can understand some people may not have my level of faith in the developers. Now you are entitled to your opinion & you don't have to like the game. This might seem strange coming from me but you are allowed that. However, your comment reminds me of Wind Waker. They said the graphics in that game was going to kill the franchise & today Wind Waker is considered a classic. I predict the same will happen with Ecos of Wisdom. However, even if I'm wrong & the game is Nintendo's first major flops for Zelda (unless your strange & actually count the CDI games, that where not actually made by Nintendo I might add) I don't think it will be the downfall or end of Zelda. Nintendo will do what it always does. Take there feedback & use that feedback to give us a better product. It would take multiple back to back flop titles to kill off the Zelda series.
@@austinfondren2590 You can only summon three objects at a time. How is that "limits are bad". How dare a game encourage creativity. Truly the downfall of gaming.
I think the switch 2’s gimmick should be connecting to the dock wirelessly so we can have gamepad gameplay again. Not invasive but it gives the option for nintendo to develop very unique games.
The new dock will print Mario and Zelda themed stickers when you get in-game achievements. Maybe even scratch and sniff if we're lucky. Bam. There's the new Switch 2 revolutionary gimmick. And because this gimmick is so awesome, Nintendo will justify making the Switch 2 barely more powerful than current Switch, as well as making their NSO service worse by resetting the Classic Games library back to a dozen NES games do they can trickle them out all over again. Also, NSO service will have a price increase to $60/year for base package, $150/year for 'deluxe', and $100 / $280 for the Family Plans, respectively. There will also be no other new additions or features to the service (no voice chat, no messaging, etc), and Friend Codes are now extended to 80 digit codes that change every month and require you to update them on your Friends List or else you'll lose them. Not like it matters since you can't even communicate with people on your fraking friends list anyway.
12:47 I just really like the 3Ds' 3D though. I have a 3D monitor now to play some games in 3D sometimes. Like Ori and the blind forest, it looks stunning in 3D.
3:00 this is completely false. You are right about Luigi Mansion 2’s boot out system, but Luigi’s mansion 1 was insanely linear too. You could have some sorts of freedom with hidden rooms, but it’s pretty railroaded in terms of what rooms you have to go through. 2 is also not great with this, and the mission format actually makes it worse in some regards, but I can’t say that the first game was open and you could do what you wanted. 2 does have specific tasks that you have to do with backtracking as well, though there are some explorative aspects, like finding more gold, gems, and boos, but like the first game, it doesn’t exactly take away from how linear the game is structurally. For the LM1 amusement park analogy, It’s more like an amusement park where you could only go to attractions after doing a specific task and you had to go to them in a specific order, not the same as just going to where you wanted. The only difference is that unlike 2, there isn’t a boot out system so you don’t have to go back to the entrance to go to new rides.
LM3 is *also* extremely linear. You have to do the floors in a specific order, and the floors themselves have a very linear structure- you basically just progress from puzzle room to puzzle room with little deviation. At a certain point we have to acknowledge that this is just what Luigi's Mansion is as a franchise. What makes it fun ultimately comes down to how enjoyable it is to play on a moment-to-moment basis, and LM2 actually shines in this respect. I vastly preferred LM2 to LM3 because I felt LM3 leaned too hard into being a puzzle game, to the detriment of the ghost fighting aspect. Fights in LM3 are too short and too samey- you get the same basic green ghost enemies way too often. LM2 gives you more variety and features combat more frequently, giving you a more dynamic experience.
The original Luigi’s Mansion at least gave you the illusion of free exploration. You could find secret rooms and secret bosses. If you examined things you could find key items like Mario’s stuff which gave the game more character. It really gave the feeling of exploring a creepy haunted house. Plus, there was much less padding than one or two. The only padding was the black out section which actually changed the gameplay and removed any safety.
the point here is not linearity, it's the feeling of the pacing being broken all the time, it's really annoying in a game that's supposed to be exploring haunted places being interrupted every 15 minutes by you being teleported out of it to read some dialogue instead of just doing it at your own pace and letting the atmosphere do its job
@@Yamartim I’ll agree that 2’s pacing is very bad, especially compared to 1, but Arlo is wrong when he says you can do “whatever you want” in 1 like you can go whatever room you want in any order, when that isn’t exactly the case
The problem with Palworld is that the creatures look way too similiar to Pokemon. You could look at any one and say "Oh it's that Pokemon", wheras Digimon and SMT have distinct unique designs. I also think the game was popular when it came out, but not many people seem to be playing it now.
Me and a friend still play it to this day, but we both agree Palworld doesn't have staying power. We're enjoying the moment while it lasts, as it were.

I was just watching Wood talk about how Arlo is a great Nintendo TH-camr on the Nontendo Podcast, and then got an Arlo notification for this video 😂 perfect timing
I say Kirby Star Allies has the most missed potential for its hardware. I also find that its design is hindered by the friend mechanic and I feel it would've been better if it leaned even further into being a rehash of previous games. The lore is good but it has nothing to do with the returning characters.
The thing about the “Nintendo needs to fail” argument is that right now, Nintendo is doing EXACTLY what they SHOULD be doing. So much so, they’re currently the shining example compared to their competitors. Yes their prices suck for some games, yes they’re taking way too long to make old games available, but they’re also firing on all cylinders giving us the games we want. Unless Nintendo backpedals and starts spitting out Paper Mario Sticker Star-like games again, I want them to be as successful as possible so they continue on the track they’re on now.
honestly the weirdest thing about the whole "Nintendo needs to fail" argument is that... like... they seem to want Nintendo to fail so that they'll make good games faster... but if Nintendo was actually genuinely being too slow or making bad games then they would be failing. the fact that Nintendo isn't failing means that the whole argument for "Nintendo needs to fail" is built on a false premise. the fact that Nintendo isn't failing means that they're currently in the place that people want them to be. if Nintendo was already being too slow and making bad games a failure would likely make things worse before they get better. the Wii U era lasted 5 years before we finally got the switch (double checking the dates left me really surprised that we've been on the Switch era for 7 years now...), and I'd argue that the Wii U era was strongest at the start (admittedly potential bias of a Pikmin fan who only wanted the Wii U because Pikmin 3 was a launch title). if Nintendo ends up in a failure era again, that's probably another 5 years of us having to deal with a failing Nintendo before we actually see any good come of it.
13:55. Absolutely. Zero Escape 999 is genuinely one of the best visual novels because of that reason, as it utilizes the DS in a way no other system could possibly fully replicate the experience in. It was such a smart design philosophy, if you haven’t heard of this title please check it out
11:30 I think in some games cases, I think announcing it too early is the main issue. I love what happened with Mario Wonder and Echoes of Wisdom where Nintendo just surprises you with a cool new game out of nowhere that looks great and we barely have to wait for it to come out. I definitely prefer that over the "this is now in development" and then waiting years for news. I'm fortunate to be one of the ones that was still blown away with Tears of the Kingdom and loved it even with the long drag of hype and theories.
It's got 40,000+ active players on Steam right now (past midnight CST in the US). That alone is already more than any & all Digimon games ever have had on Steam, so I think comparing it to that franchise was silly.

Great video. I love your material! Also, the Ganondorf action figure pumping his fists while riding a Metroid wearing glasses was funny beyond belief! Consider finding a new silly pose for him in each video - a little something for your regular viewers to spot!
I've got a spicy take that's completely unrelated to Nintendo: I'm sick of Spider-Man from Insomniac Games. I feel like the PlayStation Spider-Man series, while good, has worn out it's welcome. I don't like that Insomniac Games is seemingly being handled MORE Marvel projects, when they were one of the most creative teams in the industry. That planned lineup from their gigaleak is....Dismal to say the least. It's also upsetting that Sony has seemingly forgotten about their ORIGINAL "Super hero" video game series, being inFAMOUS.
If the writing for Insomniac's Spider-Man wasn't so boring that'd be one thing. Peter isn't nearly as cool or funny as other iterations, and the writing is too cartoonish for a semi-realistic world.
Right out the gate that first one is frustrating, because on the one hand, like Arlo I can see the both sides of the argument, where one side likes to take their time, but also that feeds into FOMO. You don't need to play every single game that comes out, and there's plenty of time to pick what you want and relax with the game you picked from these libraries. I don't understand wanting to immediately drop something to play something else because it's newer, and I also don't understand the inability to multitask games. My issue with the drip feed is it feels like intentional gatekeeping keeping paying users on the hook for maybe getting the rerelease they want when Nintendo could just splatter their entire library on there and defeat the purpose of pirating their games. While we're waiting Nintendo gets to swing its dong around killing "pirates" online whenever they pop up while not actually providing a service that they could do right now that would kill the necessity of it stone dead. Also, literally all three Luigi's Mansion games were phenomenal and I had a blast with every one. They're all good for different reasons.
Heres my hot take (put this in the video if you want): I absolutely hate when people start talking about dlc for a game that took years to make, pikmin 4 is an example, people started talking dlc right after the launch, why would the developers add dlc in a game that took at least a decade to make.
Here’s my hot take. The ‘waiting not being worth it’ argument is meaningless and shows the growing impatience of today’s consumer. BotW and TotK are amazing both games on their own merit. That’s all that matters.
The thing about that is I kinda don’t get that mindset probably cuz I can’t think of a game that I waited a long time with and was disappointed by. I’m into other shit besides video games so however long one takes is irrelevant. I feel people are using expectations to not being able to judge something properly lol
My hot take: Switch Online’s subscription model is great. It just shouldn’t be the only option, and the drip feed is too extreme. It’s great because it’s much more effective at getting kids into classic Nintendo games than a Virtual Console would be nowadays. On the Wii, it was the best way to get great games on the cheap. $5 for Super Mario Bros. 3, $8 for Super Metroid, $10 for Ocarina of Time? Awesome! But now with free games like Fortnite, kids will probably gravitate toward those before spending money on old titles. But if a whole library of classic games is included with the subscription they already bought to play games online, then hey, might as well check out the older Marios, at least. And that can be a gateway into playing and enjoying the other all-time greats. On the Switch 2, with NSO having all its games so far from the start, and with the first Switch kids starting to grow up, I think we’ll start to see this strategy pay off.
I mean I still think no subscription required to play online would be better, and a lot of the nes and snes games included were like a few bucks.. and now you're gonna pay for them forever and never own them. I'll concede though that the retro games at least justify why you're paying money to begin with.
I like the NSO as well! While being able to buy the individual games is still something that it needs, ive gotten to play so many older games at this point I think it was absolutely worth the price.
@@OChunksyeah but now games like pokemon and splatoon need extra money to have fun, like the Pokédex now is pay to complete and splatoon is only story mode until paying for online.
@noahthecrazy1632 the pokedex is yours to choose if you want it to increase, no ones forcing you. And splatoon is MULTI-PLAYER focused, like what are you even complaining about???
I want the Switch 2 to have a unique name. I still want it to have backwards compatibility but I don't want another wii-wiiU problem where people get confused.
The Wii U had way more than just the naming issue that doomed it. Nintendo to be blunt had no idea what to even do with the thing. Its not that it was a bad console by any metric (as the homebrew community can attest to with mountains of evidence) its just every opportunity Nintendo had to really sell it got gutted so hard that failure was the only option available to it. They had a viable competitor to the PS4 or at least Xbox One... and then essentially became Homer Simpson when it came to actually getting interest and supporting it.
About the TOTK point - no one's expectations about how good a game will be should affect when it's released. Hype shouldn't encourage crunch time. Ever. Edit: And there's conversations to be had about at what point devs should just "release the game," but THEY should be having those conversations, not us, because before release we don't have the info to say anything of value. Any informed opinion on a dev cycle we have is gonna be in hindsight and we need to accept that.
I mean, duh. The expectations usually don’t lead to that in the first place. Devs build hype for a product themselves and then release unfinished products to capitalize off of that hype. They don’t release games because of OUR expectations. The more I think about this comment, the less sense it even makes that you posted it.
TotK is great and all, but what the spent their time and energy on with it isn't what it really needed. The UI, the awkward sages, the sparce sky islands, how memories were implemented, useless horses... Putting those first would have been worth 90% of the zonai device shenanigans we got. Which was all *great* but yeah... No gimmick is worth all that.
Twitter isn’t real. Nobody who isn’t crazy thinks switch two deserves to fail. Also TOTK’s wait was totally worth it(imo) and probably would have been a year or two shorter if COVID didn’t happen. Also it fixed basically all of BOTW’s gameplay problems.
I'm of the mind that part of why some folks who were let down by TOTK (not all, of course, but some) is because the inflated dev time due to COVID and the extra time they took to polish it led some people to think it was gonna be more than it was. And what it is is already a lot, mind, but I think some people saw that it took a brand new Zelda cycle to make rather than being out in just a few years, and assumed that they were going even bigger. If TOTK had been able to release in 2021 in the same state we got it, I think some of those folks wouldn't have been let down. The other factor here is that, as much as I love the BotW/TotK style, there are plenty of fans who want something a bit more classic and know that, given the average length of Zelda dev times, it probably won't be until the middle of the Switch 2 before they can roll the dice on getting something new. Compared to if it had been a 2021 game, the new Zelda could have been that system's SSBU.
Also, consider that Nintendo initially had a "Switch Pro" planned, and TOTK's development likely was originally being optimized to take advantage of the hardware. But it was scrapped, and extra work just went into maximum optimization on the hardware we still have.
It makes no sense to try and definitively claim if TotK fixed BotW's issues, because all of us had different issues with BotW. I took issue with the weapon fragility system in BotW and not wanting to waste good weapons on weak enemies. TotK fixed it for me because I can make my own good weapons whenever I want by fusing monster horns, so I don't feel bad about using and losing weapons anymore. Some people had the same issue with BotW and feel that TotK didn't go far enough to address it. Some people didn't have that issue with BotW at all. 🤷♂️ Another issue I had with BotW was rain and being unable to climb. TotK didn't fix this at all. You have to play most of the game and explore most of the map to do all the side quests to get the rain climbing gear, and then it doesn't work! You still have to go level it up at multiple fairy fountains before it finally helps you climb in rain.
I’d be a lot less frustrated with it if there was a master mode and longer dungeons. The theming on the new dungeons was great, but the only one that made you think was the fire temple and that was just barely.
The Switch 2 should not go crazy with innovations IMO. Just being a more powerful Switch is the safe option. Maybe boring for some. But there's a much bigger chance of said gimmicks just driving up the price without being very good. Being able to swap between hand held and tv is great. But how many games have REALLY made good use out of say, the ice cube trick they showed off with the joycons back when the Switch was new? I think Nintendo has a lot to lose and a little to gain by being experimental with the hardware again. Abandoning the Switch's innovation of swapping between tv/handheld would be disastrous, and trying to stack NEW gimmicks on top of it would just be overdesigning/cluttering/over complicating things IMO.
Skyward Sword was better than BotW and TotK. The map is too big, the equipment system was flawed, enemies always determined damage not weapons, the stamina system just means you can climb over everything in the world, the dungeons were too short as dungeons and too long as puzzles, they made Zelda a disney princess, and money wasn't an option when you sell meat skewers at almost 500 Rupees a pop. Skyward Sword had more personality, you cared about the world, its characters, and while the motion control is an aquired taste, it didn't take away from the game too much, and it was linear with clear boundaries to overcome by either changing equipment or figuring out a problem a new way. Plus, Skyloft as a concept was nothing like Termina or Koholint could ever have been. (couldn't put it in 255 characters on twitter ^^')
Agreed, except for the Disney princess part. Skyward Zelda fits that bill too. I will also add that while I'm currently enjoying my run through OOT3D, I have noticed some of the same issues part. The characters aren't special outside of Sheik and Malon, some of the exploration stuff is stupid, and, man, those first three dungeons were lame. Still, I quite like it.
I appreciate not wanting to be overwhelmed by NSO releases, but the drip feed is madness. There's a better way to introduce games gradually: have the whole library available, and have a curated recommendations front page. That way you can introduce games slowly to people who don't know them, and have everything available to everyone else. The big issue with the dripfeed as recommendation: most of the games posted to NSO are garbage. Let's be honest, the NES had, like, 5 good games--toss that in your spicy take salad.
And two of those five NES games were Dragon Warrior III and IV... ...and three of the best five games for SNES/SF were Dragon Quest V and VI, and Final Fantasy VI (Arlo will be tittering at this like Kefka at the Narshe Chainsaw Massacre).
@BJGvideos no, I meant when Edgar and Sabin, by themselves, wiped out all of the Magitek Knights in the Narshe / Tri-State area, and Kefka looked at the charnelhouse of the catastrophe, and said, "WTF?!" (Alternate history, to be sure, but this is my headcanon, Sabin suplexing a Magitek officer into Edgar's buzzing chainsaw being a sight I would love to see memorialized in an opera.)
Wait til they reset the Classic Games library to a dozen NES games on Switch 2 and trickle the same games out again for the next eight years. Oh, and the NSO service will receive a price increase but will have zero new features (still no voice chat, messaging system, regardless of whether it's with people on your Friends List or not - so, same as current Switch).
I feel like the "Nintendo should fail" attitude only leads down a slippery slope and none of it is good for the customer until POSSIBLY the very end. If Nintendo's newest console were to flop, that means that people aren't playing those games, meaning those franchises start taking hits, people on the old hardware aren't getting new games, and things kinda just go downhill. Imagine if Nintendo released the Switch 2 and Kid Icarus Uprising HD, the Switch 2 flops and subsequently takes KIU with it, leading to Nintendo going "Well, I guess people are done with this franchise," and relegating it to the same bin as Star Fox and F-ZERO. I can understand wanting Nintendo to be humbled a bit, making them take their time to really polish up their stuff, but there's a VERY fine line between being humbled and being completely destroyed. I'd love to see more from some franchises (Pokemon), but I also fear what would happen if a boycott were to be successful and the next big game failed. What kind of message would that really send? With companies like Nintendo, I don't think it would be a good one.
Nintendo is fully capable of being charming without gimmicks. Think of the NES, SNES, Gamecube, N64 they did not have gimmicks. They were just consoles that played games. Some were successful some were not. I'm glad I got to live through the "gimmick-y" era of the Wii and DS, but I think we can leave that behind us now. It was cool. It was fun, but it doesn't need to be a requirement for every new system.
Don't know why anyone would wish for failure. If its about learning from mistakes and losing your ego then why not hypothetically wish that Nintendo has an open mind and improves upon the original. Either way, its all in your head so you might as well wish for a positive outcome in your head.
16:45 Honestly, this is why I love gimmicks. It gives the chance for certain new ways of experiencing things to come about. I feel like after a game console has had it's due, it should be remembered for having provided a unique experience and not just games that can be emulated or ported to different platforms. Not to say devs should go out of the way to make consoles with features specifically to prevent them from being compatible later on, but if it allows for a cool new feature for the user to experience (like the Glasses Free 3D of the 3DS or motion controls) I think it's awesome!
That's a really big exploitable hole dude, do you have any idea of how popular Nintendo fan creations can get and how often people use links with included ads or captchas to milk every cent they can get? Even if you say "Nintendo should make a way to promote fan content", then you get the edgy fans trying to make games that would not be approved by Nintendo and whole issue starts all over again, that's the problem, you can't win against the internet.
the GB, GBC, and GBA effectively didn't have any gimmicks, and they're easy to look back to when you want pure and simple Nintendo games. I personally really also like the DS, but more for the added XY buttons. Nintendo doesn't need gimmicks. Guitar Hero, DDR, and DK Bongos put the gimmicks into external peripherals rather than baking them into the console itself, but the downside to this is that Guitar Hero controllers can be hard to find nowadays for those who want to get into Clone Hero. ultimately these things should be "weird controller enhanced" rather than "weird controller required" as much as possible.
Game boy was portable. Game boy Color had color. Game Boy Advance was portable with 32 bit color and the SP brought backlights. These aren't considered gimmicks because they stuck.
I can definitely sympathize with that "Nintendo should be humbled" take. Honestly, for me, the question, for a long time, wasn't, "Will the Switch be the best selling console", it was "Do I personally want this grumpy, fan-hating, over-pricing company to have the best selling console?" And the answer was no. But then I compared it to the competition, and realized I don't think I want Sony to have the best selling console either, and I honestly don't want Microsoft to have the best selling console either. If either of them were the kings instead, I'd have to put up with their garbage instead. It is really just a matter of picking your poison, or the market picking its poison I guess. So, the answer to my question is still no, but its a far more ambivalent no than the passionate no it used to be. Because compared to everyone else who could be at the top, Nintendo's poison starts to look more palatable.
And did you think about it more and realize that you’re arrogant af to think that your opinion on what company you want to have the best selling console means anything?
I think Nintendo struggling is part of the reason why their older games have so much quality and charm. You cannot deny that many of the first party Nintendo Games have lost the charm and love since 2019. But that's also because the new president of Nintendo, Shuntaro Furukawa is more focused on economics
It's a shame that we only get Twitter tweets put up here, because I just can't Twitter anymore. My spicy take would be that the Wii U deserved to be more successful than it was. It combined the DS' dual screen tech and the Wii's motion control weirdness into one console. Both were successful on their own, how did combining two successes lead to a failure?
I honestly liked the WiiU game pad a lot better than the Wiimote and nunchuck. Also, getting to play Earthbound while still a kid on the WiiU VC was a game changer that I will be forever grateful for.

I can see where the person was coming from by saying Kirby Star Allies was so good because it was so respectful to the legacy of the Kirby fanchise, however I would argue that the way the game first initally released was the OPPOSITE. Although a lot of Kirby fans loved the DLC waves because the content in itself, the game even being allowed to be released in such a state, and the fanservice being gatekept behind DLC is not respectful whatsoever. It was not respectful to the legacy of all the games that lead up to Star Allies to release something half finished with gameplay and design flaws.
The post-launch free DLC wasn't gatekept though; it was unfinished and intended for post-launch. Not only that but in no definition could Star Allies be considered an incomplete game when it launched with literally everything every other Kirby game had when they came out in that general era: A main campaign, a second, harder campaign, a third campaign where you play as someone else entirely (merged with the Helper to Hero concept from Super Star Ultra), an Arena, a True Arena, a handful of minigames, a bunch of collectibles you gather either randomly or through finding secrets in the levels, all of it was there. Name me one thing that wasn't there that other Kirby games had. You can argue that it wasn't designed the best, but its objectively untrue that it was an incomplete game when it came out. It was complete when it released, and they only added onto it after that. Its not like Mario Strikers where it was so anorexic in content for a full-priced game that you could get at best an hour for your $60.
@@GameAW1 nah bro you huffing hella copium, saying it WAS unfinished and then it was not. That shit took like four hours to complete on launch, while it technically had series staples it was still barren, most people will not return to the game after that, the DLC absolutely gatekept some of the best content that should have been there day one, no excuse.
Yeah launch Star Allies is one of the worst Kirby... But with the DLC (which didn't gatekeep anything since it's free, it's just "gatewait") it's one of the best.
@@meta_knight The excuse was pretty simple: It wasn't finished yet. Nothing to be done about that. And Kirby games ALWAYS take like four hours to beat, even everyone's darling Robobot. I also never said it was unfinished at all, only that it didn't have all the dream friends which were to be blunt not necessary and just a bonus. You're just ragging on the game unfairly because you didn't enjoy it and trying to twist it into the game being unfinished but there is nothing feature-wise that Star Allies lacked that any other Kirby game had, not even one function.
This episode of Spicy Take Salad in particular makes me want to reactivate my twitter account because now I have something I want to say that I want to see Arlo's opinions on specifically.
Here’s a spicy take for you: The Zelda community is the most spoiled community on the entire planet, Nintendo deserves to give them an absolute failure, just a abysmal Zelda game, JUST to humble them, and show how much love was put into every single game in the series (excluding the CDI games)
@@Aimela136 nah, Fzero got a very fun game that surprisingly cattered a large community and a lot of people playing competitively. Im talking of fzero 99
I've 2 cents to throw in on the "gimmicks" discussion. You said yourself that if a "gimmick" is a good enough feature that actually enhances the games on the system then it isn't a gimmick, it's just a good feature. However, the nature of gimmicks is that they are a risk that pushes the capabilities of what's there, and new features aren't developed without the risk of them just turning out to be gimmicks, and you aren't always sure which ones are going to stick. Is the whole controller motion controls a gimmick? Perhaps for the Wii and Wii U, they may have pushed it too far, but just about every system and controller these days supports some amount of gyro control, which is very similar to motion controls. And heck, gyro control itself was a risk of just being a gimmick at one point. Being able to connect the handheld to a big screen? No one really considered it till Nintendo did it with the Switch, and there was a risk that people wouldn't be all for that, it could have just been a gimmick, but we are calling it a feature. The DS's dual screen, gimmick or feature? People seem to think Nintendo did a good thing there. The point I'm getting at is that new features take the risk of just being gimmicks, and consistently it is Nintendo that is pushing the envelop to develop new features. Everyone else worries about optimizing the features that exists and don't do anything new. I'm in favor of Nintendo pushing new gimmicks because that is how we get new features introduced to the world.
I think Palworld as it is is just a foundation. You have a gameplay system, but without objectives and a strong opposing force for the player to overcome, it will fade into obscurity. It could easily succeed once the designers figure out a goal for players to shoot for, or it could just fall flat if it remains just survival and sandbox.
I totally understand wanting to take the big company down a peg, but wanting Nintendo to fail so that in years to come it *maybe* makes a comeback is incredibly naive and short-sighted. Another failure on the level of the WIi U could be catastrophic. Nintendo may not survive it, and even if it does, a) it would never be the same again and b) there's no guarantee it even would successfuly make a comeback like in 2017. I'll say this much; kudos to whoever had the stones to put that opinion forward.

Regarding games cooking for too long, this can also mean that large portions of the game were scrapped and had to be redone. This could be due to poor planning by the designers or executive meddling, but the result is the same: a game supposedly in development for several years coming out looking like it was cobbled together at the last minute.
Or it can result in the game not coming out at all like the 3D DK game that we recently learned was scrapped.

I get the want for Nintendo to have a fire out under them with a ‘failure’ era but I think people forget how barren most of the Wii U era was. We as consumers would also have to go through a period of worse games that come out less often.
not to mention how much that weighs on the developers themselves, the gamecube era that was also a very unsuccessful period was known to also have great games but also in more recent years we've been learning how much they had to crunch and destroy themselves to make ends meet over there
Yeah that take ignores that it harms the people that do buy the console

Featuring Hello Kitty from the Hello Kitty Series??
That is not the switch's gimmick. It's gimmick is literally in its name- Switch. You can switch between home and portable console, that's the gimmick
@@rohanrodrigues7115yeah, people take that for granted. I don’t know any device that handles “switching” better
I've seen plenty of games utilize the HD rumble. But it's just a little extra, not something that's ever used as a core gameplay mechanic. Really it's on par with stereoscopic 3D. It can add just a little extra to the experience, but if you choose not to use it you can completely forget it exists.
But I think it's also one of those things people take for granted even when it is on simply because it's so unobtrusive it can go unnoticed.
the new warioware uses the IR camera
As long as the switch 2 has a better name, indicate that it's a sequel, not an add on like the Wii U and allows backwards comparability, it will sell well. Not switch and Wii numbers but decently well.

Mario Party's biggest flaw is a lack of maps. Mario Kart games nowadays start with 30+. Mario Party games get 5 or 6. I can 100% see Mario Party being a lot bigger if there were more maps.

It’s most likely going to be either jamboree or a bigger surprise next gen.

@@austinfondren2590I don’t speak for everyone, but I had a blast with it.

The bar is so low for zelda games
Completely agree. Also, get rid of the name “secret stones” like they’re SO COOL and SO POWERFUL name them ANYTHING more interesting
I was also hoping for more story/lore and world building especially in the biggest Zelda game ever with elements from every game and where explanations for how we got here are essentially nonexistent “it’s been a long time” isn’t narratively satisfying enough for me
The dungeons could have been more in-depth, too, but for the most part, they are more fun than divine beasts aside from that sorry excuse for a water temple.
The "Nintendo deserve to fail" stance would also result in a shit ton of layoffs, people either don't understand this or don't care
A lot of gaming companies deserve a good fail. Nintendo is not one of them
I'm pretty sure it's just people (mostly on Twitter) too busy massaging their massive hate boner for Nintendo

I enjoyed Palworld but idk for being an "open world" there is no "World" to explore
No notable towns, characters, music, just kinda empty

Best take here

That’s because it’s shovelware
The DS had an absolutely enormous library, especially since there was no eShop for it. Yes, lots of shovelware, but also lots of indies and creative new IPs in addition to Nintendo's own amazing output for the system. Dozens and dozens of excellent games making use of the unique hardware
There was an eshop though. DSiWare for the DSi onwards.

Mid roll ads are hilarious
I feel like this is more of an overhyping situation.

The DS's "gimmick" was so good that they brought it back with their next handheld and it was a huge success too. I think that says a lot.

I prefer Luigi's Mansion 1 over 2 and 3.
the point here is not linearity, it's the feeling of the pacing being broken all the time, it's really annoying in a game that's supposed to be exploring haunted places being interrupted every 15 minutes by you being teleported out of it to read some dialogue instead of just doing it at your own pace and letting the atmosphere do its job

It was such a smart design philosophy, if you haven’t heard of this title please check it out
Never stop evangelizing Zero Escape! 😂 I love it too
11:30 I think in some games cases, I think announcing it too early is the main issue.
More of these please Arlo. They are very interesting. And shoutout to Kane for the original suggestion for this series ❤❤

Also, the Ganondorf action figure pumping his fists while riding a Metroid wearing glasses was funny beyond belief! Consider finding a new silly pose for him in each video - a little something for your regular viewers to spot!
I've got a spicy take that's completely unrelated to Nintendo:
I'm sick of Spider-Man from Insomniac Games.
And agreed-it's a tragedy Sucker Punch has given no love to inFamous since Second Son: First Light
Insomniac used to be the Spyro people. Think of the creativity and charm behind that series, wasted on Marvel games.
Heres my hot take (put this in the video if you want): I absolutely hate when people start talking about dlc for a game that took years to make, pikmin 4 is an example, people started talking dlc right after the launch, why would the developers add dlc in a game that took at least a decade to make.
it didn't, i think it's fairly obvious that miyamoto was initially referring to hey pikmin
I just wish I could buy individual games. I don't want to pay $70 to rent a game from 20 years ago

I want the Switch 2 to have a unique name. I still want it to have backwards compatibility but I don't want another wii-wiiU problem where people get confused.
If they do something simple like switch 2, and DONT ONLY ADVERTISE JUST THE CONTROLLER, they will be fine
The Swutch
Totally agree
Still waiting for the PIKMIN 4 REVIEW ARLO
I get that the dual screen gimmick was great, but nothing tops the combo of handheld and TV console concept of the Switch. Easily my favorite.
Well it fixed some problems but definitely not all
Also, consider that Nintendo initially had a "Switch Pro" planned, and TOTK's development likely was originally being optimized to take advantage of the hardware.
Another issue I had with BotW was rain and being unable to climb.
My family caught me watching this and thought I was watching Sesame Street and gave me a lecture telling me to grow up

Arlo: * talks for an entire opinion about gimmicks *
also Arlo the very next opinion: "yea i don't like to talk about gimmicks"

With companies like Nintendo, I don't think it would be a good one.
n64-level failure. they fall behind the PS5 but they're still keeping afloat
@@bungusbajablast2877 Fair point
Nintendo is fully capable of being charming without gimmicks. Think of the NES, SNES, Gamecube, N64 they did not have gimmicks. They were just consoles that played games. Some were successful some were not. I'm glad I got to live through the "gimmick-y" era of the Wii and DS, but I think we can leave that behind us now. It was cool. It was fun, but it doesn't need to be a requirement for every new system.
Nintendo has always had gimmicks ever since R.O.B. the robot. They were just sold separately before the DS.
Don't know why anyone would wish for failure. If its about learning from mistakes and losing your ego then why not hypothetically wish that Nintendo has an open mind and improves upon the original. Either way, its all in your head so you might as well wish for a positive outcome in your head.

8:32 Ok pal I'm disliking for that one
16:45 Honestly, this is why I love gimmicks. It gives the chance for certain new ways of experiencing things to come about. I feel like after a game console has had it's due, it should be remembered for having provided a unique experience and not just games that can be emulated or ported to different platforms. Not to say devs should go out of the way to make consoles with features specifically to prevent them from being compatible later on, but if it allows for a cool new feature for the user to experience (like the Glasses Free 3D of the 3DS or motion controls) I think it's awesome!

the GB, GBC, and GBA effectively didn't have any gimmicks, and they're easy to look back to when you want pure and simple Nintendo games.
11:59 Major Lee Damage is one of the coolest names I've ever heard.

Here’s a spicy take for you:
The Zelda community is the most spoiled community on the entire planet, Nintendo deserves to give them an absolute failure, just a abysmal Zelda game, JUST to humble them, and show how much love was put into every single game in the series (excluding the CDI games)
As if the multiplayer games and Phantom Hourglass didn't already do that (even if I still think PH is. . .ok).
They'll still call it the best game ever made and pay Nintendo's MSRP of $80 anyway, so it will do no good.
Meanwhile, Nintendo also seems to completely ignore other staple franchises of theirs like F-Zero and Custom Robo
The bar is so low for zelda games its insane
This, one hundred percent this.
I simplified it to make it a spicy take but this type of world building - a sense of direction - is a necessity.
