    This game seems awfully realistic in the worst ways but I love learning about it. Thanks for making a video about this game for English speakers.

      You are welcome! Due to cultural differences, some games can just roll with stuff that can be deemed inappropriate in other parts of the world. One of the things I find appealing in playing non-English games.

    Love that you included DQV and Clannad for "what comes after marriage." Skyrim is pretty shallow, but those games really make marriage the start of a remarkable journey.

      Haha, definitely one of the titles that comes mind regarding after marriage plots. I was team Flora because it was blatantly obvious Enix was really rooting for Bianca. Gotta watch out for the little(in terms of popularity) guys.
      Having the option to romance/marry a NPC is a neat feature, and no wonder it has been popular for a long time.

    It's really interesting what they tried to achieve with this game - I can't say in all of the Japanese PC games I own, have played, or am aware of, that I've seen anything quite like this... but wow this is high up there in terms of blatant misogyny, not to mention the game it self looking janky as hell. I loved learning about it though - your videos keep getting better and better!! I'd love to see more videos on Korean stuff like this since it has even less awareness in English gaming circles than Japanese stuff.

      Haha, I just get extra excited on reviewing bad games. But thanks for seeing it that way. Hopefully I am getting better with experience.
      Japanese bishojo games are sexist in their own way, but it really differs from the Korean sexism mindset. One significant fact is that the Japanese are much better at objectification 😅 I'll probably get into that in the later reviews.
      Startling thing is that Newlyweds is not the most misogynistic game among the three Korean dating sims that were released in 1997. Expect more Korean jank and extreme prejudice in maybe fall. Stay tuned!

      @@bapsago Video production is one of those skill that only gets better and easier with time ^^; And it helps if you're excited to talk about the thing in question, that definitely shined through here.
      Oh yeah, there's a LOT of issues with bishoujo games that I'm seeing more and more as I delve into more games myself. Some are a lot better than I expect, and others are a bit of a mess. Since my Japanese reading speed is really slow I've been mostly focusing on good titles, but at some point I'm gonna run out of 9/10 and 10/10 games.
      Hype!! Very excited to see what else came out then.

    Wonderful to learn about! Reminds me a bit of "Otometeki Koi Kakumei Love Revo" in how a stat management dating sim can be fun and engaging, but the actual product being horribly problematic.

      Wasn't a fan of the protagonist's comically deformed overweight appearance in Love Revo, but at least you can visually see her weight change, unlike this game lol

      @@bapsago I remember telling my friends about the game when I discovered it in high school. We looked up how much 100kg, the starting weight of the protag, is in lbs horrified to learn that it was the same weight as my friend who was slightly above average weight and no where near comparable to the obese portrayal in the game.
      I think this is the first time contemporary east Asian standards of beauty hit me so hard.

    I feel bad for both the wives and kids that had to grow up with this oddly judgmental view on marriage.

    MC: This is my beautiful vampire, giantess wife who wants to use her vast life experiences to be a world-renown writer. Now please watch as I criticize everything about her in excruciating detail for the entirety of the game.
    Perhaps the world would heal if, instead of matching with any of the potential wives in this game, the MC matched with Namil of Campus Love Story. Then we would get the joy of watching these two judgemental creeps go after each other for paragraph after paragraph. 😆

    • @bapsago
      @bapsago  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Vampire wife has a lot of patience to not downright suck the living blood off of the husband. Then again, it won't even taste good.
      You know, there's actually a dating sim where it's possible to have two sexist male characters(the MC&his friend) end up together. I foreshadowed it in my Tokimemo review; it's called Aitakute and it's quite bad. Surprising for a Konami game, but it really is. Here's hoping you'd be here for that!

    I think this might be your best episode yet. I didn't realise it was 40 minutes long because it passed so fast. Getting all that context is really important imo. Considering how terrible capitalism is portrayed in this game - like the unbuyable house - makes me hope there's an element on satire, but even if it was, it's too close to actual misogyny, fatshaming etc. to tell 😬

      I'm pretty sure there's no intentional sarcasm in this game; just very pure cluelessness. It's a Boomer game after all lol

  • @NyanMango
    @NyanMango 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Wow, this game seems... very sexist (oof, and transphobic too?), and doesn't even sound particularly fun to play (coming from a guy who loves stat raising sims à la tokimemo).
    That being said, I enjoyed the review. Your writing is very amusing, and it's always cool to learn about games that I'd otherwise never know existed. Subscribed!

    Was this... supposed to be fun to play? They really made a drudgery and misery simulator... and it could hardly be considered an accident seeing how every system from the stock market crashes to the gambling to the way classes work cause constant setbacks. I'd think it was social commentary on how NOT to live but it doesn't seem to be self-aware enough for that. Also, in a marriage simulator, it would be nice if the narrator at least LIKED his wife. This has the least amount of wish fulfilment I've ever seen in a game of this type!

    • @bapsago
      @bapsago  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not enjoyable at all. That's why made this needlessly detailed review so that no one will play it lol
      And you're right. South Korean games and media in the 80~90's did have a tendency to be especially brutal, cynical, and cruel without intention. I think a lot of it comes from inexperience; I'm certain player immersion was never a thing they considered.
      Also, partly due to the political climate the developers grew up in. It was very likely for someone who attended college in the 80's to develop pessimistic tendencies what with the military dictatorship and invasion of human rights. It's an interesting observation to say the least.
