I gasped out loud at Daisuke Ono being in this. It's a small world....
The script being so vehemently no-homo'd is something I understand from a business perspective, but the game still feels really unique for it. I think a mod for this that keeps the "just bros" script but has all the original casually horny CGs, dongs and all, wouldn't be out of place for a surreal comedy game today.
My questions for the Q&A: What equipment do you use to record? And/or what was your favourite episode to write?

    • @bapsago
      @bapsago  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

And a very, very fresh Ono D at that!
The original Hotaru2 also had urinal pissing CGs for each character. If anyone is to make a mod, that should be totally added in.

Tricking straight people into reading sanitized gay porn is so funny lmao. Such an interesting choice... you gotta respect it. Hearing a bit about the history of bara was cool too, I enjoy me some occasional art but didn't really know much about its roots.
In terms of Q&A questions, just off the top of my head:
    - Do you also read visual novels that aren't dating sims and if so, what are your favorites?
    - How did you get into dating sims and how did your consumption of them change as you grew older, if at all? I remember you touching on this in a previous video but would be cool to have in a Q&A too.
    - If you grew up playing dating sims, did you ever have any awkward moments with friends or family in regards to their content?
    - What are some of your favorite tropes in dating sims if you have any? Story-wise or for example character archetypes you enjoy.
    - Do you read regular ole books as well and if so, what are your favorites?
    - Do you also play other types of video games?
    - Was there any specific catalyst that resulted in you starting a TH-cam channel or did you simply get the urge to share your interest in dating sims one day?
    - Is there any dating sim you really want to read but haven't been able to for some reason (not available in a language you know, impossible to find etc.)?
    - Also some general topics I'd find interesting to hear about: your favorite and least favorite dating sims, your favorite artists or simply what game has your favorite art, sims that surprised you (positively or negatively), ones that you othewise really liked but got ruined by one particular thing you just can't stand...
Sorry that it's a bit chaotic but that's what came to mind immediately! Maybe one or two are worth answering

Check out this manly men doing manly things in this manly man job! Full of fiery hot blooded passion..or something. Really contradicts the original Hotaru 2's premise where it was made more to look like a trendy worksite tv drama(full of horny gay employees).

I wanted to say this on the Rival Schools video but YT moderation deleted my comment
I recommend looking up Masanori's artwork, he's done a lot of art of Rival School characters (it's pretty nice ☺)
He's also responsible for the art in Hunk's Workshop (which also has music from Namco Fame Shinji Hosoe and his music group)
Happy to see you review more bara/BL games!

I remember Capcom fanart was everywhere in gei fanart in the early 2000s.
And duuude, I was such a big Masanori fan I emailed FG begging to sell me Hunk's Workshop overseas. They were really nice and obliged. It's still preserved in the paper envelope it originally came in, haha.
And sorry for TH-cam eating the comments. I always check the 'Held for Review' tab, but nothing was there😔

    Yay! New video! :3
As a gay guy, it's very interesting to learn about bara/gei dating sims! I really like the artstyle. All of the love interests are attractive (except for Seta), but I think Mamoru is the best.. I can see why he's the most popular character! 😍
It's funny how they turned the game's narrative into a bromance, but it does seem like they were able to write a decent story. Imagine playing the game as a kid, and later finding out it was a p*rn game 😭

My questions for the Q&A are the following:
      - Who's your favorite(s) Tokimemo 1 character?
      - When and Why did you start writing video game reviews?
      - What are your favorite video game genres and consoles?
      - Have you ever traveled outside of South Korea?
      - Do you like Sanrio? If you do, who's your favorite character?
      - Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, or PC?
      - How many languages do you know?
I know that's a lot of questions.. 😅 I'm excited to see your playthrough of Tokimemo 1! :3

    • @bapsago
      @bapsago  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hotaru's artwork is pretty unique compared to other gei games released around that time. I like Inukai's artwork too, but prefer his flat/b&w stuff.
I don't think Seta looks bad as a character, but all his doings makes his overall soft feature pretty superficial. Taiyou is supposed to be the hot one, but Orio is love.
If you were a gay kid who played this to later find out you were able to have sex with the guys all along, guess it won't be too bad, right?

For the Q&A: I don't have a question to ask but in your Tokimemo 1 video, you said Yukiko from Tokimemo 3 is unintentionally the most hated heroine in the series. I've been waiting for 2.5 years for an explanation why! I just wanted to thank you for making these videos. Seeing these old games being talked about brings back some good memories of a simpler time. I'm a big fan of the channel and I hope that the Tokimemo 3 video comes out someday (soon?).

    • @bapsago
      @bapsago  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks for the encouragement! Perhaps someday. Not that soon I think. Let's see how life turns out.
At the time of Tokimemo3 Makihara did place second last in the popularity poll right above her best friend(Chitose). Nothing against the character; as I stated in the video she was a mere victim the revamped Bomb mechanic that was only utilized in Tokimemo3.

    for q&a
    1. how common are "otome villainesses"? it's a popular trope currently in isekai stuff especially, and it's presented as a given in otome games. I don't play otome, really, but it doesn't seem too accurate to the english-translated titles that I know of. The only one I can think of is angelique , but even the villainess there doesn't seem to fully fit the bill as depicted in other media. So are they a myth or do they exist? How do you feel about them yourself, real or imagined. (and how do you feel about otome isekais in general, for that matter)
    2. How many languages do you know? Have you learned any of them for the primary (or one of the primary) purpose of understanding games?
    3. do you know of any japanese (or korean) creators that do similiar retrospectives/reviews on older games in video format?
    4. The discussion of gei games made me think about it, yuri as a genre is more ambigious but *is* there an equivalent for it in games? As in, games specifically targeted towards a gay female (lesbian) demographic. Additionally, I know you talked about yuri genre in one video, are there any other game you want to cover?
4.5. I don't think it's very common, but there are a few otome games that have one female romance route, how are those generally received, and how do you feel about them if you played any? The one I heard most about is 月華繚乱ROMANCE. I think there was also one inspired by rose of Versailles.
    5. is there any game that you had requested that you have no interest in covering? Or any scrapped video ideas you want to share?
    6. do you read any original english visual novels? If so do you have any favorites.

    @sebastianalvarezgomez6650 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Thanks for the video! A bromance game sounds like an awesome idea, but doing it like this is very uncool!
For the Q&A: What are your favorite video game genres (besides dating sims)? What is your favorite and least favorite game ever?

  • @michaelavanessian8558
    @michaelavanessian8558 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Cool video as always! The change in style between the different versions of this game is kinda wild, just in completely changing the story like that. Though I suppose it's not the only time something like that has happened, albeit not quite like this.
    For the Q&A:
    - Of all the facts/tidbits/development info about games you've uncovered in your reviews, which do you consider to be the most fascinating?
    - And kinda related to the previous question: is there a game you wish you knew more about? Like something whose development is a mystery, or just something you're having a hard time finding in general, or along those lines. If that makes sense.
    - What's the weirdest game you've played (whether because of the game itself or the facts surrounding it)?
    - Of the videos you've made so far (and/or reviews more broadly, since I know you've talked about writing text reviews before starting making videod), what was your favorite to put together?
Sorry if any of these questions don't make any sense, or are simply redundant compared to others' questions: I'm typing these up pretty late in the night, lol. Might ask more later if I can think of any before the deadline but these are probably my main ones.

Getting lesbian jump scared in the best way possible by sudden buff lady at 6:24. What a time to be alive.
I gotta say that this art style is super cute...especially the bushy eyebrows. Gotta love anime characters with cute, bushy eyebrows. It's also really interesting how the artist portrays Satoshi who's the 'young, cute one' in a way where he clearly looks younger and more innocent, but he's still meant to appeal to a gay male audience. AND THEN THE ARTIST'S MORE SIMPLY COLORING STYLE REVEAL AT THE END! Oh it would've been really cool to see it in that style...A really great and informative review as always!
Now it's time for some questions for the Q&A!:
    1. What's you favorite comfort food?
    2. What are some of your favorite video game soundtracks?
    3. Favorite girl in the whole of the Tokimemo series? And favorite boy in the Tokimemo Girl's Side?

I think is a very fresh idea the sexuality of the character. I mean in all BL games that I played the protagonist is just the inexperienced gay
    I'm excited for the Q&A * - *
My question is: did you play Princess Debut for nDS?
I remember the game as one of my first official dating sims. it was very repetitive, and I couldn't get the childhood friend route (and didn't investigate how to get his ending XDDD)

Other than making it impossible to romance straight dudes, it only changes the in-game text a bit, but a nice option to have.
Oh, the Tokimemo longplay will be a recording since my equipment is nowhere close to snuff. (That's why I talked about doing post-edits.) I'll have to think real hard on the answers, too!

Thank you so much for including the information about gei works in MASSIVE, as well as providing a ton of interesting research about the queer gaming climate at the time in Japan! I'm really glad that these days, gei and BL artists/fans are (for the most part) spread across all genders and sexualities, even in Japan.
That's not to say there's still issues, since there's unfortunately been the rise of puritanical anti-queer anything movement under the guise of "being palatable to those in power" coming from inside the house, interfans STILL insisting on using oldass terminology like bara and yaoi while refusing to research the history of both+see what new artists are doing these days, as well as an incident where a geicomi fan lashed out at several big BL artists on twitter (some of who are friends with gei artists), accusing them of "benefiting" from a sadly deceased gei artist's style just because they also drew muscular men.
This was thankfully resolved but honestly the West really REALLY needs to read more damn gay erotica imo
Anyway, apologies for the essay, here's my question for the Q/A: if you were to make a dating sim, what mechanics would you like to explore, and what would be the premise?

Wow, accusing BL artists copying a deceased gei artist just for drawing muscular men is just hilarious and sad. That person must have a weird stereotype on what BL should be. Probably imagining the typical sharp face and Yaoi hands. BL manga artists like Uchida Kaoru existed long before muscle BL stuff became more common/popular.

What happened to Satoshi seemed too unfair to me, and he spent only a year working for that bastard and he forgives him, I think that at that time they did not connect emotionally with certain stories and they did not want to think too much to give it a more realistic ending, they could simply say that Satoshi continued to hold a grudge and call it a day, I demand that they rewrite that story 😂 thank you for the video

Though I guess that's less about being a "fan" of male homosexuality and more about ogling dudes with no expectation of being hit on. Not surprised the company toned down the warning on their website, though. Fujoshi money spends just the same

Seriously, they could have just treated it like any other adult BL game adaptation. It's not like Sukisho for consoles was changed to a friendship game. Besides, I bet some Simple Series games sold worse.

I don't know how to feel about this game lol! But excellent video, like always!
I don't really have a question for you Q&A, but I wish! I'm super new to anything dating sim and I don't speak neither Korean or Japanese so I don't have access to much content. But just opening the gate of the rabbit hole was everything I needed! I love this universe, sometimes I'm sad to not having to live the phenomenon back in the days. Every videos, I'm learning something new and it just nourish my imagination to a whole new point!
I hope someday I'll be able to make my own game...
Oh, maybe I have a question. What's the video game we see in the presentation channel vid, the one with the girl in a flower pot?
Thanks again for your work 🫶

Thanks for the comment as always!
I really appreciate that you are enjoying my videos despite not having previous knowledge of the genre, and are willing to learn new things based on the stuff I made. Gives me motivation to chug on..albeit slowly lol
Your question will go answered. I will elaborate on it, too :D

    For the Q & A:
Who was the most obtuse or difficult character for you to romance in your years of playing dating sims?

Question for the q&a: how would you design a main heroine for a dating sim?

do you mean just GAYS being bros? ;^)
(for q&A) what was the biggest culture shock you experienced between canada and south korea? and if all of the tokimemo girls fought in a coliseum, who would win?

I always wonder what it must be like for gay guys getting ogled at by fujoshi
Do they feel the same way as women getting ogled at by creepy old men? I wonder...
Either way, I'm still really excited for Jock Studio
Question! Do you have interest in reviewing newer dating sims/VNs?

No one would have liked being viewed like a zoo animal, I assume. Plus it's a real invasion of their privacy.
Apparently Jock Studio is from the Camp Buddy developers? Heard of and saw some CGs but never played it.
