  • This video shows how I replaced the "Air Door Actuator" for the passenger side of my 2003 chevrolet silverado 2500 without having to remove the entire dash board. The start-finish job should take 1-2 hours.

    I just completed the replacement thanks to your video. I've had the new part for 3 years now due to the problem being intermittent. Like others have said , I've watched a number of other videos but yours was the only one that gave me the determination to get it done. 2 hours total and I bet I'll be faster if I ever have to do it again. I plugged the new part in, turned the key on , and with the temp. control , I made sure the motor was in the same position as the old one before putting it in place. I also used a wheel spacer from my ktm dirt bike to shove in between the actuator and the duct work ( it's about 1 3/8 " tall ) to allow me to get the socket in easier. When it was time to remove the socket and ratchet I used a deep socket with a 1/2 " drive ratchet with a long extension , put it on the end of the 1/4" drive ratchet , and used it to rotate the stuck socket off the screws. I also removed the trim around the speedo cluster, removed the little storage compartment under the right drivers side vent, and that allowed me another access point which helped. I also couldn't get the box wrench on the screws to take out the last little bit but was able to wiggle them with my fingers and turn them by hand.

    Dude this tip was the greatest. I am a Master ASE Tech & Shop owner. Have been working on vehicles for over 30 years. Normally the only way to go is by the book. Book time is almost five hours. Took me about 30 minutes this way. I did spend the extra minute to remove air bag and that gives you a lot of room..... Airbag has two bolts easy to get under glove box and two bolts you take out just inside vents. Remove grab bar by pushing small release buttons. Also pop out wire harness clip then push your harness out of the way.

    Just did mine and I took the dash apart it's not as bad as people think the dash comes apart very easy. It also only took me an hour an a half to do it all if you go through the glovebox you need very tiny hands if you have meat hooks like mine they will not fit. Its a lot simpler taking apart the dash to replace this part. To recalibrate your hvac just take out the fuse for ten seconds replace it then turn your key on not start for one minute don't touch anything turn your key off then start your truck and it's all done.

    Has anyone here tried this repair on digital dual climate setup? I have an '03 suburban LT that I want to try this on, but one other person posted there being other hardware and components in the way. Can anyone comment on this?
    Joshua, great video btw. I've search youtube for about a year and watched several videos, and this is first time I came across yours.
    UPDATE: well, I took a peek in my 03 suburban LT and found that it is NOT possible to get an arm in behind the glove box. My model has onstar and it seems the cavity right above the glove box is where they installed the onstar box. However, the replacement still seems possible if the airbag is removed. Thanks to this video I have temporarily disconnected my passenger blend door actuator. When it was in one of its good moods and blowing cold I quickly shut the car off then I disconnected the actuator until I can get around to changing it.

    Hi, Today i started working on the replacement. As i could not remove the top screws of the airbag in a safe way not to loose them, i just removed the dash, as i have done this before couple of times, and its not such a big operation, but it gives you more free space and light to see what you are doing. So dash gone, airbag out, and i loosened up the two bolts of the subframe which holds the air/vent ducts in place. By doing so i was able to put a piece of wood between the frame and the air duct, lift it upwards, so this gave me about almost an inch more work space to free up these two screws......man what a terrible job....anyway, i got my hands in and was able to remove the two screws. I made a special tool for this as well, I had a 5,5mm socket (yes I am dutch so i measure in mm and km :-) and i was able to clamp an old wrench exactly around it, i used a hammer to do that. So this gave me a nice tool to move between the duct and the actuator to free up the second screw. once that was out it was easy to take out the actuator. Earlier I had a little bit an issue with the connector, i could not see how to set it free but after few minutes i had that one loose too. Now i have ordered for my Chevy Tahoe 2004 a new actuator, the original had number: 52402588 and that one is replaced by: Four seasons 37537 at RockAuto.com. Further i made a new special tool for the installation of the new actuator second screw in the back. I made a hole in an aluminum strip and pressed this socket 5,5mm very tight in that hole. further, the strip is about 20cm long, i drilled a hole in the end of the strip and fetched there another strip of about 30cm which is able to pivot or swing. So, now i can make a bigger move when i screw in that nasty screw in the back. With this new tool i am able to move this tool with an angle, and i do not need to put my hand inside anymore which is quite convenient, as this tool is about 50 cm long in total:-) With my left hand i keep the socket in place on the screw. Too bad i cant post pictures here, it would explain it quite easy. Now it waiting for the new module, build it in and calibrate the whole thing according to your instructions. I hope all works quite fine afterwards.
    Hope my input is also of any help to anyone.
    Tip: If you don't take of the dash, you cannot lift up that subframe for about almost an inch, that is the advantage when you take of the dash.
    All together took me two hours to get the actuator out.
    Good luck.

    I used some electrical tape around my 5.5mm socket and put a 12mm ratcheting wrench tightly atound it as a special tool. There's still very minimal space, so half the time you need very strong fingers (both hands) to rotate the socket by squeezing from both sides until the screw is screwed in enough to force the whole tool on it. I also used my magnet pick up tool to help positiom the screws. I even tied a fishing string around the socket because i was afriad of dropping it. Once you drop the screws or your socket down the abyss, good luck. Overall, not fun at all can't say it is easy unless you have extremwly small hands

      I don't have the part number. To answer your question though, yes; the actuators are all different. The best way to get the right one is to pull the OE first, then get the numbers off it to place the order. Most auto part suppliers can get you the part same day if ordered early in the morning (like what I did) or at worst the part will be there next day. Hope this helps!

    • @JoshuaEdwardsviolin650

      I have never owned or worked on the interior of a GMC truck from your year, so I cannot provide much feedback. What I do know is that since GMC is the "luxury line" of GM trucks, I can imagine there would be a few more bells and whistles packed under your dash. At the very least, I would try removing the air vent and the glove box just to see for yourself what is going on back there. You could also try removing the air bag (if you know how to safely do this), to see if that would give you access. I hope this helps.

      This servo usually just place antioxidant on the connector contacts and jiggle it some ~ I had the grab bar removed and plastic cover out but was afraid to remove the airbag as it might have an internal storage for battery gone ○Way this looks at 2:50 appears that if I can get the airbag out I can see the diverter / deflector door - The servo is a $1.19 unit they are getting $119 for

    I'm guessing the 2500 is roomier than most Silverados, etc. I attempted this method with my Avalanche and there was no way. Fastest way to get this done without cutting the vent with a saws-all is to go ahead and remove the dash (not that bad a job - lots of videos out there), and then loosen the bolts holding the air vent in place. Take a long pry bar through the air bag hole and use the metal bracket for leverage to lift up the vent and you'll have plenty of clearance to do the work.

      Removing the air bag would likely give you more access. I thought about it, but decided I could work around it. I do not think removing the air bag is hard, but you will probably need to look up a "how to" video on the steps so you don't accidentally set it off or mar up your dash.

    A breakthrough in this process with a 5.5 mm socket and a 11mm wrench with the socket wedged into the boxend to make the tool. My 03 suburban uses the 5.5mm screws instead of your 8mm so may not work with 8mm?? But my tools are craftsman 1/4 5.5mm socket and craftsman 11mm wrench. If a person had a ratcheting wrench that the socket would wedge into that would probably make the perfect tool..

    • @thomaswestbrook7468
      @thomaswestbrook7468 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you try this I only had a 5.5mm in a 6 point socket but believe a 12 point would make it alot easier landing on the points. Also used my 18 inch cheater pipe to use as a lever under the bottom of the dash steel and caught the stepped section of the air box and prayed gently upward to pull the airbox down for more room for wrenching. My part is 100% removed with this method hope I can replace the new part in reverse method. Hope this helped someone...

      +Joshua Edwards ok so if no cold air but compressor is working and the refrigerant lines are cold in your opinion what's stopping cold air from making it to the cabin of the truck?

    • @JoshuaEdwardsviolin650
      @JoshuaEdwardsviolin650  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kelvin Pogue This will be long, but it will cover the bases. First, make sure you are at the right air door actuator. I know that sounds elementary, but Chevy moved things around between different models and years. You can check by plugging the actuator in and moving the thermostat knob on the dash around to see if you did remove the right one. If you move the thermostat and a new actuator doesn't move, you could have pulled the wrong one. (Don't try this test with the old actuator).
      I would also try moving your vent door all the way to heat and see if it will blow heated air with the engine on and warmed up. If you have heat but no cool air then your problem is with the AC, not the door.
      Can you tell if the door in the vent system is moving? While unlikely, it is possible the internal door has broken off from the stud used to operate it.
      Next, is there air flowing through the vents at all? I worked at a shop in southwest Virginia for a while and we found all sorts of animal nests in car vents and engine air intakes that caused all sorts of problems. (A nest could also be preventing the door from operating).
      You also mentioned your AC lines are cold, are they all cold? The line from the compressor to the condenser coil in the grill should be hot. The line from the expansion tube to the evaporator coil should be cold. Chevy used some really poor quality AC compressors in the early 2000's (I've already replaced mine). Check out this graphic to do a basic check of your lines.

    • @JoshuaEdwardsviolin650

      gerardog15 it may be the air recirculation vent is trying to open but cannot fully open and drops closed again. The flipping or thumper noise that is in the passenger side of the dash could be the door trying to open repeatedly. I hope this helps.

    Great video. This is going to save me so much time!!! I'm going to try and tackle this in the near future. Quick question - did you need to set your new actuator to the same position as your old one and if you did how did you do it? Again man, great job.

    • @JoshuaEdwardsviolin650
      @JoshuaEdwardsviolin650  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It has been a while now since I did this job. But I think the actuator will only fit on the "pin" one way. I think what I did to avoid alignment issues was leave the temperature setting in one position (such as all the way hot or cold). Then before I installed the new actuator, I first plugged it in and turned the ignition on. Plugging the new actuator in and turning the power on caused the new actuator to move to the same position as the old one (provided you did not touch the temperature setting). Then I turned the truck off and installed the new actuator. I hope this helps.

    This is an awesome hack but it 100% would not work on my 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 Duramax. Not near enough clearance between the actuator and the AC vent to get a 1/4" drive ratchet and socket. Even tried flexing everything very hard with a pry par and still no luck. I'm very mechanically inclined. Perhaps some sort of improvised welded socket or ground down ratchet/socket combo would work. I ended up just unplugging the actuator in its coldest position since I live in FL and don't really need the system to have heat. Keep up the great vids.

    • @bobhaas6941
      @bobhaas6941 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good idea, 2005 Avalanche in S. Florida so no need for passenger heat. I'll just unplug it and manually turn it to cold. Thanks for the idea.

  • @user-gh4is7wf3c
    @user-gh4is7wf3c 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

    So, why didn't you show how you took the drivers side screw out? That screw head is below the actuator surface, which means you can't get a box or open end wrench on it. And even my 1/4" drive ratchet won't fit in there! Well, I got the right screw out and after not finding any good ideas anywhere and not wanting to wait for a week for an EZRED 4S12L slim wrench, I went back out and grabbed my flat pry bar and pried up till the plastic around the other screw cracked and broke off. Then after I got the screw out to put the actuator in, I couldn't get it back in. So it'll have to work with one tight screw and the door end post. But the at least the AC works out of the passenger vents now. I'm happy. Hope I never have to replace that again.

  • @johndagui2348

    Did you try a long extension and universal joint to get to the screw from the front?

    • @JoshuaEdwardsviolin650
      @JoshuaEdwardsviolin650  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      John D'Agui I don't have a universal joint socket, but I'm sure it's worth a try. A ratchet wrench may also be faster, but honestly it didn't take too long the way I went about it.

    • @bobhaas6941
      @bobhaas6941 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the screws are recessed into the plastic body not allowing a ratchet wrench to get on them, but once the screw is up high enough you could switch to a ratchet wrench, and also use it to put the screw back on until it's too low, then switch to a socket. Some trucks don't have the room yours does, like when there's OnStar box in there, but just getting the socket alone on the screw and finding another way to turn the socket might do the trick. With a big money these GM engineers make and the big prices they charge for their trucks, you think they would provide better ways to access these parts. Like a couple tubes through the air vent that would allow a socket extension through, but not let the AC air out of the vent.

      This has nothing to do with the video poster. It would have been irresponsible of him to post a part number. Check your glove box for your car's option codes and that will help YOU find the correct number. It's not that he's mean for not posting it , it's just that everyone's vehicle can be just a little different depending on options. His dash might look the same as yours, but maybe he has a super duty, and you don't. Really the best thing to do is pop the AC vent out and use a mirror to get the number off your currently installed actuator.
