  • “Tony, I want to put Pearls and Flakes in my paint, should I just mix them in my base coat? Can I just basically pour pearls or flakes into it, mix it up, and then spray on the car?”
So, can you add pearl in base coat?
Well, if you’re looking to do that metallic pearl-ish look, I really recommend not getting a flat color like the Inferno Red that I show in the video. Instead, why don’t you just pick out a color that’s already a metallic pearl. The thing is, you really don’t want to go mixing pearls and flakes directly to base coat because you’re going to have to put a lot of it in there to get any kind of effect.
And most of the time, it just gets buried in the paint and you can’t really notice it showing in the paint.
If you ask me, the best way to do it is to really go to the paint shop and have them mix it for you - so it’s formulated properly and it’s sure to come out looking like a really nice metallic finish.
But, the other way to do it is to mix in intercoat. You will basically have a clear base coat on top of your base - like a DBC/DBU500. You would mix your pearl or flake in that.
Finally, you can just mix the pearls or flakes in your clear coat. The dangerous part about this option is, if you run it, you will have that pearl/flake run. And even if you sand it out flat and buff it, you’ll still see that run.
So mixing it in clear coat is more for someone that already knows how to paint well and lay the clear on glossy without running it. If you could do that, by all means go ahead and use just a basic clear coat to mix your pearls or flakes. Make sure you watch the video because I show you how it looks like on some clear coat with Gold pearl - Silver flake that has already set.
You can use a metallic base coat or even a flat-color base coat, lay the intercoat or clear coat with pearls or flakes on top of it and get an amazing finish.
Watch the video now because I also include a clip of a pocket bike project that I just did. I laid the clear coat mixed with Gold pearl and Silver flake on top of the Inferno Red. It turned out looking really cool.
I laid on two coats of the clear coat mixed with some Gold pearl and Silver flake and you will see how it changed the Inferno Red color to an awesome Burnt Orange. It started out as a faded, ugly, chipped up, cracked fiberglass pocket bike.
It’s the same clear coat we used on the Harley Davidson Yellow gas tank project.
In a nutshell, you’d want to mix your pearls and flakes in a clear coat or an intercoat base coat. An intercoat base coat is basically just a clear base coat. You first lay your base coat - it could be metallic or flat, then you would mix up your intercoat - a clear base coat WITH any kind of pearls that you want - violet, blue, green, etc…mix it up, spray it on. Give it two coats, 50% overlay. Let it dry, then put two coats of clear on it.
To skip that, you could just put your pearls or flakes right in your clear coat. Spray on two coats of it over your base coat. And you’re done.

Really liking the intercoat idea Tony! My stock color is ford grabber blue, but maybe after the base coats, one intercoat that has violet blue pearl would be cool to add some mysterious depth. Then finish up with clear. It would either be insanely awesome or totally suck - either way you've sparked some cool ideas here!

If you use intercoat base coat mixed up with Pearl's or metallics, and you get a run or orange peel can you still wet sand it out??? Then apply straight clear coat will the run or orange peel still show up under the clear????

Tony, I’m a guitar maker and want to have a real over the top finish on a telecaster I made. I don’t know what I’m doing, but here is what I want to do: metallic gold base, gold flake rustoleum rattle can glitter blast, covered in candy apple red duplicolor paintshop, but I would like to have pearl in it. Are there any problems here? I was thinking about adding the pearl in the candy.

Can pearl be used with Matt clear or it has to be added only in base coat and can clear Gloss be mixed with clear Matt for satin finish or sheen for better durability and better looks? Here in India clear base is not available so is it possible to add a colored base and then mix the pearl in clear gloss for second coat and then add the third coat of matt and gloss mix for the sheen? Really looking forward for that pearl effect in satin or sheen finish...

Can you leave that hardened block of clear on like a hotplate for a few hours and have it turn back into a sprayable liquid?😅 Serious question for my curiosity

    • @HowToPaintYourCar
      @HowToPaintYourCar  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hey Man! While it’s a curious idea, hardened clear coat cannot be reverted to a sprayable liquid, even with the application of heat. Once the clear coat has cured, it is a permanent, solid material. If you have leftover liquid clear coat that you don’t want to waste, be sure to only mix what you need for a specific job, as the remainder will eventually harden and become unusable. Why can you buff out a run in intercoat but not clearcoat?

  • @dbohann66

One question I have about your comment of putting pearl in your clear coat and the possibility of a run with the pearl in your clear coat and not able to sand out. Wouldn't it be the same possibility with intercoat and having a run it?

    • @HowToPaintYourCar

Hey Man! You can use a clear coat as a carrier or a clear base coat. They sell certain carriers for certain custom projects but you don’t have to use what they sell. And yes, you can use a clear coat as your second stage, as a carrier to carry pearl, flakes, or candy. The only thing is when you’re using a clear coat and you screw up on that stage, you have to do the paint job over. Like if you ran pearl, flake, or candy during that stage. Hope this helps! I was wondering, is it possible to paint a HD sportster gas tank with a deep red, and then give it 2k clear from a spraycan and the "throw" by hand flakes on it? Could you make a video og how to flake paint a tank with spray cans and flakes by hand? Or will you just recommend visiting a pro painter instead.

I have a particular look and color I'm going for but it was from th-cam.com/video/utR8dNm5MY0/w-d-xo.html for dipping cars. In your professional opinion, can I use their method of with conventional paint and still get the same look they were able to produce?
