Pearls are much more subtle, just gives an iridescent quality to the color. Personally, I prefer the sparkle of the flakes. But I think it would depend on the color and car.
Did the candy sort of kill the pearlesant effect? Did you guys cut and polish the finish ? Maybe it's just me but the flake side sorta looks like pebble dash finish. Of the two l would lean towards the pearl.
Your supposed to wet sand the flake down before you candy it. It helps give it a glass look when you build the clear on it. But also probably only put a couple coats of clear down. I recommend at minimum 5 coats of clear for custom paint jobs to have a deep clear. This car was a test example so take it into account.
Thats because it needs at least 5 coats of clear and then the full cut and then buff. LOTS more work But WAY better finish. THIS JOB is only half done NO WAY to compare.. YES i do spray metal flake jobs

I never use the spout on anything as it usually doesn't work as intended or splatters everywhere, like the age old saying, " If it ain't broke, don't fix it! "
I liked how you showed something as simple as a dividing line takes a fair amount of time. I've learned a few things and the painting part of the " paint job " is the easy part. Prep, sanding, repair, more prep, more sanding, more sanding and tape are the hard parts. As for pear vs flake....I feel you get a better effect on body line changes. The flake is cool but it's like looking at a bass boat. Putting one down then doing a graphic with the other might be cool.
Fun fact, my Dad is the one that created Candy colors for How Wheels at Mattel in the 1960’s. He went to the hot-roders in Chicago and got their formula of chrome base with colors and a clear top coat and found a way to replicate it for HotWheels.
My dad ate the first candy apple and exploded!!..twice!!...And I took his bloody entrails and made it the color dad's bloody entrails!!..Everyone knows this!! ..
It honestly depends on the look you want. The micro-flake gives that old school Candy Bling color pop. The Pearl base gives a nice subtle metallic effect that accentuates the candy color. Both look great.
The pear side looks smoother and looks more uniform. I agree that it’s just personal preference on if you like flake or not but the flake did nothing to enhance the candy finish. Now I think if you did this same test in Autoflex you’d get a more comparable result and it obviously would look better from further away. But I do think a silver metallic base or any lighter metallic base in general is going to give you a better representation the candy color of choice every time.
Definitely depends on the look you're going for, I like the smoother look of pearls, personally, which is why I keep asking and hoping for a matte pluto midnight flip sometime
Would love to see a video where both pearls and micro flakes are used together with candy and see how it comes out, maybe flake then pearl or pearl then flake, candy on top of it
Flake side looks rough, may be we need 2 coats of glossy clear top coat to look smooth like pearl side. If we can get smooth finish on flake I will go with it. Thanks for videos, I love your content and efforts you take to make it. Cheers..
Wow, both look amazing. I think it comes down to the look you are after. Personally I prefer the Pearl side for that foe color shift effect but if you are after a 'metalic' look I think the flake side would be the way to go. Thanks for the video!
They're both amazing! What would it look like if you mixed the silver metal flake in with the candy color?...and same for the pearl? It's a tough decision - I'm more of a glitter girl, but pearl gives off such a glimmer, too....I can't decide. Fun project though!
Pearls with candy is always a sure thing. You know exactly what you’re going to get. I’ve always been a micro flake girl. The flake side is absolutely gorgeous! The pearl is a beautiful silk like finish. The best part of the video? The outtakes…..too funny!!!
I think it all depends on the how dark your color is. I think the pearl looks much more level and smooth, but I like the look of the flake most times. I'd actually prefer the pearl with this color. Thanks for showing the prep also, shows your actually listen to us viewers. Keep up the awesome videos!!
@@kid_rajah it isn't a supra, but I have a 2003 gmc sierra thats a super similar glossy blue and it looks dripping wet still! If I could post a pic I would! Youd see why I love it for sure!
I guess it is down to personal preference as you said. A trade off between sparkling and low gloss finish and smooth, flat, high gloss finish. In the end the user decides: get sparkling or show the curves. 😁 But, you can now use that candy tint to change the crazy reflective glass beads into any color you'd want.
I feel like the flakes make it seem more Matt and textured and the pearl gives it a less textured smooth glossy finish. Both are a beautiful in its own right.
the flakes look really cool, but the texture scares me away. I'm planning to do HOK red with pearls in the next couple weeks. Do I need a layer of topcoat (without HOK concentrate) on top of the candy layer?
@@shin10912 regular Candy paint jobs always needs a glossy topcoat because the topcoat is so freaking important for the candy look. A good candy paint job is when you really can see the depth and gloss in the color, so that's why topcoat is the final stage of a candy paint job. Because this is now done with regular Plasti dip and not in Autoflex with 2k clear coat you are already losing a big deal for the real candy experience. You want a matte look so you will never get the depth what makes a candy look. Believe me when I say don't use HOK Candy Concentrate for your dip job. You will pay a lot of money, HOK KK isn't cheap, for an outcome which you can get with the regular pearls. If you want to create a "custom" color for your matte dip you would be way better of with adding a juice. This will save you a lot of money which you can use for something else. Candy paint job + glossy clear coat ✅ Candy paint job + matte clear coat ❌ I'm sorry for busting your bubble but I really wish you good luck and fun dipping you car/bike etc.
Like others have said..the flake looks rough, orange peel like. Maybe another coat or two would make it look better. I love them both. That color rocks!! Since doing these House of Kolors, what is the longevity and peeling action of the candies??
Thank You! You just showed me the paint job I'm gonna have done to my bike this winter. While the flake base is sharp I believe the pearl base will look a helluva lot better on a custom chopper with the chrome and polished aluminum on it. Again, THANKS!
For that semi-gloss finish the pearls are a better look. For Autoflex the metallic would be my favorite. I've been around heavy metallic silver base with HOK Kandy Apple Red and it's gorgeous! I think for both Autoflex would give that final result that would really pop too.
Wow! MUCH prefer the Pearls side, it looks "wet" and has much more depth. PLEASE consider making a video on a metallic copper-maroon colour, similar to Chevrolet Aztec Bronze. Would love to see it on the SPLBRG S4 or another Audi as another pearls/candy experiment!
So much combos now I personally think that they both would look good on my personal vehicles now it’s a decision if the flake matches the vehicle. On that car I would go with the Pearl combo. Try an old school low rider or a donk with the flake?? Such an awesome product!! Infinite amount of combos
Pearls all the way. They just work better with dip than flakes. Flakes give it a texture that with traditional clearcoat could be layered multiple times and sanded and buffed to achieve smoothness. Just cant get that with dip. Pearls laydown so good with dip. Nice and smooth. Love the aluminum base with pearls by itself.
I think both are great, but personally I would choose the pearl. The flake I think is more lowrider-esque...if that makes sense. Also, now we need a silver holographic 😆
The only way I can describe it is. The metal flake side (drivers) is good for a 55 Chevy Belair The pearl is more like a AC Cobra (passenger) side. Make sense?
I prefer the carbon silver pearl side, it looks more smooth and even, the micro flake "pop" is cool, but the flake roughness takes away from it. Thank you for doing this for us!
Before the video even started I knew I was going to love the flake beside the best and I was not disappointed! Both sides are beautiful, and depending on which color you're going to put over the pearl or the flaky would depend on which one would be better. But for me 99 Percent of the time I would choose Flakey!
For us, much better with microflakes, we love the shine of the flakes !! we develope in Spain, a special aluminium in spray can, and particles seems bigger than thos of the microflakes. Aluminium Spark we call it, is amazing as bsae for the candy paints. You always make very good works !!
Amazing. Loved car's texture variation and bloopers bloopers bloopers wow😀. Imagine a car that uses this combination of texture but in a design form like racing stripes or ivy pattern or some kind of graffitti art.
40 year or so ago I had my 65 Buick Special painted candy apple blue. My painter put on 8 coats of paint over silver. I came out darker than this car and it looked like you could just dive into the side of the car. The three dimensional affect was unbelievable. I would love to send a picture (a digitized polaroid image, I think). The flake side is beautiful but the flakes make the finish not quite so deep but I bet it would look great cruzing at night under street lights.
Both sides look great, but the Pearl side gives you a Candy look and I think if you are spraying your car with Candy you want that Candy look. The flake side just looks like Metallic Blue. As always Great work guys. 😁👍
Personally I think it all depends on the car. The Pearl would suit something like a big Audi or SUV. Where the Flake would suit say Lambos or higher end cars. Yet something like a new Supra or tuner cars would work with both. It's all down to personal preference. Each to their own.
I think it's a matter of what the customer prefers. As a graphics artist who paints cars and bikes I have used both on the same paint job. it's all about what your looking to achieve.
I wonder, based on the side by side, what a 75% Pearl, 25% MicroFlake coat would look like... it would have the awesome shifts, but would also have the pops of the MicroFlake thinly spread throughout.
Very nice video. Love both sides but I guess I’m more traditional in the look of the pearl being more elegant at with the straight gloss sheen. By any chance would love to see this but on a deep rich darker red tone color perhaps almost like the red crystal metallic color Mazda has.
Both look good, but I personally would go with the pearl base. It has a much more smoother and glossier look to it. The flake side looks as if it has grittier texture with some white specs in it. It also has a bit of a matte finish to it, which I like. It reminds me of when I use a matte finish topcoat over a metallic or holographic fingernail polish.
Pearl side. Smoother with more depth, which is why most people choose candy colors. How long did it take you to prep the car? Which compressor are you using to spray?
Pearls are much more subtle and the Candy Blue is delightful. It sort of comes down to what effect you are trying to achieve. I give both sides a 4 out of 5 as they both create a wonderful effect.
Candies were meant to be shot over flake (old school show cars and lowriders). Pearls are nice for color but the pop comes from the flake. Bigger the better in my opinion. Try doing a 1/2 and 1/2 with gold and silver flake and a lime green candy. And yes I’d love my truck to be done with the flake and blue candy
I love the sparkle of the flake side, but not the rough texture. The blue is so stunning it stands on it's own even with only a subtle effect from the pearl. I just like my paint smooth.
Both are great. My fav is the micro flake. During the last shot, with both versions visible side by side on the hood, I thought the pearl base looked a lot like a police car kind of blue.
Definitely going with the Pearls. That just looks smooth and a little more sophisticated. The flake doesn't look bad, but if it were my car I'd go with pearl without a doubt.
I love that HOK oriental blue... the flake vs pearl really depends on the look your trying to achieve both look awesome honestly. I actually want the pearl on my car with that candy... its original color used to be very similar just over the last 17 years it has gotten beaten up...
Wow, I can appreciate both. The pearl gives a factory smooth look where as the Flake gives that hotrod custom look. If they are combined does one wash out the look of the other?
Pearl gives the paint a more wet look, typical of exotics and tuners. Flake gives it a more “pimp type” look that’s good for classics like a 85 Caprice Donk or a 68 rat rod. Both are good but I gotta go with the metallic on 26” Rucci customs. That HoC is by far the best candy right now. That Audi tried but it doesn’t have the lines and curves to set the paint off. You get something like a GTI or a Mini and the pearl will definitely turn heads at a car show. A good buff and cut would really make it champ too.
I personally prefer the pearl. But I think it’s because I don’t care for flake too much. The color effect is great but it’s too “crunchy” for me. It makes me want to take a sander to it and smooth it.
really wish you’d use the most orange bronze base color you have with pink candy on top… think you’ll be surprised, silver base is great, but using a colored metallic will give you far more interesting results.
As it happens I found out I really don't prefer the standard rough/matte texture the product gives. I understand a clear gloss finish is much more expensive and is not as user friendly but in cases like these, I think it's almost necessary. Clear also gives way more depth to both flakes and pearls anyway. Just look at that surface, it's so rough... Almost looks unfinished or done by someone who has no clue how to paint (no offense meant) just that's the product result, especially with flakes. I would though try flakes and a ton of clear over it then sand and buff the living heck out of it to achieve a smooth final layer.
Driver side is best for me, more of a Galaxy affect. If you put a Clear Coat on top the affect would have been better in dept. Almost a 3-D affect if you will. Great job Fonz. Aeehhhheeyyyy
Please stick with the glass beaker, that was sooooo coool! It was like a mercury tornado in there! I think both finishes are beautiful, if you have a strong preference the other will dull in comparison. I think the metallic look of the flake in a really bright color like cobalt blue or the voodoo violet would make the flake pop even more.
Fantastic comparison! they both have a very awesome style to both where i would go with either one. The color might influence me a bit to one or the other but blue is OBVIOUSLY the best color so they look go in micro and pearl forms. Also still waiting for your arm gains routine, looking stacked my guy
Pearls.. candy is typically a silver like HOK’s Orion silver and the more layers you add the deeper it gets.. trademark candy is the deep wet look you can dive into.. the flake makes it look like a colored rhino lining…
Ooh love that pearl but then the flake is great too. Oh bugger now I am on the fence and cannot make up my mind. What About half and half and red candy. I just don't know.😢👍👍
So.. Pearls or Flake?
I'm in Flake it's so nice
Gotta say both are great, but I’m with the Pearl for this one!
Yess
I want to do a white pearl with flakes
both good best mix pearl and flake to make the base
Pearls are much more subtle, just gives an iridescent quality to the color. Personally, I prefer the sparkle of the flakes. But I think it would depend on the color and car.
I think it's not enough coats of blue with clear to really notice
Did the candy sort of kill the pearlesant effect? Did you guys cut and polish the finish ? Maybe it's just me but the flake side sorta looks like pebble dash finish. Of the two l would lean towards the pearl.

Personally I think it all depends on the car. The Pearl would suit something like a big Audi or SUV. Where the Flake would suit say Lambos or higher end cars. Yet something like a new Supra or tuner cars would work with both. It's all down to personal preference. Each to their own.
I know right
Hope you are having a blessed day there
I assumed I would prefer the metallic flake candy. The pearl coat makes it actually look like it’s real candy. Nice!!!

Pearl is hands down the best choice! It provides a deeper, smoother, richer look than the flakes. The Blue Candy really pops with the Pearl Backer.
I like the sparkle of the flakes and the shine of the pearls. I appreciate them both.
I love the micro flake look. It pops a whole lot more. The pearl is more subtle and looks ok but the flakes are better in my opinion.

I'm leaning towards the pearl. It has a more OEM look to it

Both are great. My fav is the micro flake. During the last shot, with both versions visible side by side on the hood, I thought the pearl base looked a lot like a police car kind of blue.
Is nobody going to mention that the giant beaker has a spout for pouring yet you don’t use it? 😂
Top video as always 🤘🏼🇬🇧
Yaaaasss!!
Definitely going with the Pearls. That just looks smooth and a little more sophisticated. The flake doesn't look bad, but if it were my car I'd go with pearl without a doubt.
100% personal preference. IMO on this car and color used I'd go with the flake!
Pearl for sure. Looks smoother and sleeker. Specially with those lines
I feel like the pearl especially on the audi looks best. I also think that the flake needs a heavier/deeper clear coat to really make it shine. Jmo.
Pearl is my favorite! Looks so clean!
I'm 1:44 into the video, You said Oriental Blue and I got Goosebumps!
I like them both but pearl looks better IMO. Thanks for the contrast.
I personally prefer the pearl. But I think it’s because I don’t care for flake too much. The color effect is great but it’s too “crunchy” for me. It makes me want to take a sander to it and smooth it.
Slam dunk on the Pearl side for me. This is the blue I’ve been waiting for. The micro flake looks decent but I’m sold on the Pearl candy blue!
Love the bloopers
Absolutely love them both. Great looking blue... wow.
Is it just me or is watching clearcoat and candy/pearls mix incredibly satisfying?
really wish you’d use the most orange bronze base color you have with pink candy on top… think you’ll be surprised, silver base is great, but using a colored metallic will give you far more interesting results.

That pearl really pushed the blue 💙💙 love it!
That looks incredible! I love that blue.
My vote is for the pearl side. It looks smoother and the flake looks rough. Question how long did you wait to tape off the 2nd color??
I like the smooth look of the pearls. The micro flake is a bit much for me, almost too much sparkle.
Pearls.. candy is typically a silver like HOK’s Orion silver and the more layers you add the deeper it gets.. trademark candy is the deep wet look you can dive into.. the flake makes it look like a colored rhino lining…

I liked the adding of the pigments before but the new way with the glass beaker takes it to another level
Ooh love that pearl but then the flake is great too. Oh bugger now I am on the fence and cannot make up my mind. What About half and half and red candy. I just don't know.😢👍👍

They both look good. good job man keep up the good work and vids 👍🏻
