This is the first objective and realistic review of the EX30 I have seen. I love the design of the vehicle but I think I will delay a purchase until some fundamental software issues get resolved. Thank you for this practical assessment.
totally agree in everything you said. Also I'm not sure to purchase the extended range / full equipment here in Chile since it's the same value as the Tesla model Y extended range and it is worse than the Tesla in every performance aspect (top speed, acceleartion, torque, range) and also the space thing... I have doubts
Excellent, and thank you for showing the screen during the entire trip It was telling when you had to interact with the car through that interface! Volvo has some key upgrades to execute to the Software before it is ready for Primetime in the USA! Turn Off the Warnings and Manual battery Warming Buttons are a must along with being able to utilize the advertised 5G connection! Like you, we live in an apartment building and park in our garage similar, but not as nice as yours. We seldom do long trips, the EX30 is about the same size as our current Chevy Bolt EUV... Ironically I have the same seat issue with the Bolt as you with the EX30. I was hoping the EX30 with its better seats and being a 3-inch wider car that issue would disappear... Looks like I'll have to wait for a Test Drive to figure that out! Thank You!!
Perhaps Volvo is watching these videos and other similar. I was due to collect my EX30 today (Örebro) but the handover was cancelled at the last minute due to "software upload" issues. I'm getting flashbacks of my first months with Polestar 2 from August 2020 which had similar glitches, no internet connection etc.
I don't know if this is enough of a topic for a video, but I would like to see what is the current Google Play store situation with third-party apps for the Volvo EX30?
Full agree with you about pre-heating batteries... It should leave us the decision to preheat anyway under 20% and also be clear when and how the preheating is going on

Thank you so much for this review. I am in the US. I have been anxiously awaiting the EX30 because finally someone made a premium small car! But I must have comfort and good software. I have heard there will be one at a dealership in my town in May. I feel much more prepared to look at the car thanks to this review. I am considering one other car which is larger because as you stated, no one makes a premium/luxury small car. But I have driven it and it is comfortable enough and has very good tech.
Yeah, i would have loved if Volvo at least offered more premium options so you could upgrade but my car have all the boxes ticked (except 20") and I just don't get the feeling of "premium small car". I have decided to replace this car with a BMW instead, sometime before summer.
Activating PilotAssist is designed to use the Gearselector downwards, like in a Tesla, automatic lane change needs permanent turning signals, normally.
Enjoying the videos. Good job. I have a reservation for an EX30 in the US. Since you are also in a Northern climate, when the opportunity presents itself, can you comment on the EX30 dual motor handling in snowy conditions. I live in a very hilly part of the county. We often get a couple inches of snow.
Hve you tried the smart #1? It has a plusher, larger seat, it has physical buttons on the steering wheel and a HUD. It's also a bit better packaged, especially for the rear passengers. And in Brabus trim doesn't look overly happy (and you can now disable the fox).
Strange, I also have an new EX30 and I can not agree regarding the faults you say you have with your car. My internet connection works just fine, no problem with the buttons on the steeringwheel, no problem with having to turn the steeringwheel to confirm I am still driving - a hand on the wheel is ok.
Thanks for the review! This help a lot. I also just need small EV car. This XC30 was hooked me up till I see your review and now I’m not sure again with all the anyoing bugs and I expected to have something better than this. As using Honda-E I’m happy with everything beside the short distance of battery especially in winter.
Jeez, that van who nearly crashed at 5:28 was a crazy moment. You nearly got to test out Volvo's famous crash safety! Excellent video, so great to get a real world review that doesn't feel overly "journalistic" and more like a normal person. I'm keen to consider this car to replace my aged 2016 Renault Zoe, but the software issues sound like a pain! Sounds a bit like with any new tech nowadays where you should never invest in First Gen tech on new products. A bit like the Pixel Watch. Wait for the second generation, or to see if they iron out any issues in hardware and software. If they don't fix it, I'll probably be considering a Tesla since I like the new M3 refresh's front look for the first time. Never liked the old bulbous style.
Even if I do more journalistic jobs today, I still see myself as an "ev fanboy" and not a journalist :) I agree regarding software and I think it's something that more and more car brands do. "We have OTA, so we can release a halfdone car and update it later". I will always call out those companies when trying a new car because I don't think it's OK. I am fine with some bugs but most of the systems should work!
Nice honest review! 57keur car is not ”a cheap car”. We should expect comfortable seats and dashboard (or HUD). There’s no excuse. Software issues seem even worse than VW ID.3 had initially. And touch button seems worse than VW too. ID.3 has a HUD + dashboard and 550km WLTP range (big battery). And a bit more legroom in back seats too. But 4WD version never released. And the new facelift has still the old engine and old infotainment system, so I can’t recommend it.
Great video. Very informative. I love the look of this car in so many ways, but if only they put a hud on there… “you’re not looking at the road!” No, because I’m looking at the screen! …in what world does that make sense? If I can get past that, this car seems great.
This is a good review and I have a number of thoughts: 1; I presume that the car in Sweden is still running on winter tyres? My new SMER version is on summer tyres and my average consumption for the first 600 miles (1000km) is 29.4kwh/100miles - which equates to 18.2kwh/100km. 2: Seat position/squab: I have a Plus but find that - at 1.88m height - I get adequate under-thigh support by moving the seat far enough back. Obviously this limits space in the rear. I think a fix might be to have some wedge shaped aluminium spacers fitted beneath the seat runners to increase the squab angle. I'm seeing a consistent 220mile (350km) range on 100% of mixed driving (town, country, motorway), with maximum speed of 70mph (110kph)
Thanks for the in depth review. I’m hoping the efficiency is a bit better with summer tires, lower cabin temperature and less wintery weather. Otherwise it will be about 25% less efficient than my current Model 3.
Thank you for the video, atm owner of the XC40 Hybrid Plugin great car but too much for the city I think. I am waiting for EX30 to be delivered in next 2 months I hope they will resolve issues with software. Thank you for the review!! + sub
Small premium car. What about a smart #1 brabus? Not as nice looking externally admittedly but nicer interior, drivers display, hud and slightly cheaper.
Thank you for the videos. How preconditioning works is not clear to me, and I also wonder if pre-warming the car in the morning will work without a charger connected for people living in an apartment wo. charger.
I was really looking forward to buying an EX30 to replace my Mini S E but I found the same bugs as you were really off putting - no HUD or driver info display, not even the option of them, after a 3 year old Mini with both is a real deal breaker for me. It’s a pity because I don’t need a big monster of an EV and the replacement Mini hatch won’t be available as a European built car for at least another 2-3 years. Maybe Elon will build the small Tesla hatch in Europe by then. My Mini still has loads of miles left in it despite its small battery, it suits my needs to a T.
I don't understand why you need a mobile signal for the sat nav to work? The sat nav in my 2016 Skoda works without any sort of internet connection, very useful as I live in a rural area of the UK without mobile coverage.
Is this a pre-release vehicle? A number of your glitches/interface problems are easily fixed in firmware updates, but I also think when dealing with a pre-production vehicle you can have issues that are unique to your vehicle. Also, is the "Hey Google" prompt not available on this Volvo? I have yet to see a reviewer mention that certain items being buried in the interface is less of a problem because they are easily adjusted through a verbal command.

Thanks for your vids Test drove last weekend having had car on order for 8 months. Was awful. Terrible efficiency, Apps didn't work such as radio, top heavy , and the parking assistant couldn't detect empty spaces but instead tried to reverse into a parked car! Woeful car.
I just did a similar test with the Tesla Model 3 LR Highland. The consumption: 15.8 kWh vs. >20.9 kWh for the Volvo. The efficiency of the Volvo EX30 is really not that impressive. th-cam.com/video/KIUBZJ-j51Y/w-d-xo.htmlsi=dIECDp5K6qnigvLI
With the amount of know-how and technology at their disposal, for a very tiny and expensive car like the EX30, 30 minutes of charging time is simply unacceptable. My 2019 Kona with the same battery capacity and the same old battery chemistry of 2017, that peaks at 77 kW, charges in roughly the same time as this newer Volvo. At the same time, the same car company, has substantially better charging curves in Polestars, so you'd expect that at least part of it to be retained here, in the smaller ones. So this begs the question: why would you pick this car over a Tesla Model Y, which is a touch cheaper? Car manufacturers these days are so stupid and dumb, asking themselves why can't we sell our cars like others do? Well this is your answer. It doesn't cut it. If it can't get to charge faster than a 5 year-old car with 7 year-old battery technology, which costed 30,000 €, then there's no point of spending 50,000 € on this lame car.
