1, after a test drive I was very disappointed, the basic size and layout are great, the software and build quality is rubbish. also NCAP are considering downgrading this type of large screen no buttons.
The opening panels (doors etc) where poorly fitted, took two people to open the bonnet. Releasing it with duff software is terrible, on the one I drove, the heated steering wheel wouldn't turn off, best we could do was turn it down to no1, the glovebox wouldn't open, the speed limit indication gave spurious readings, voice control wouldn't work, and the car wouldn't power down unless you got out and locked the doors. The speedo is in a poor position, I'm very used to driving across Europe using a TomTom in corner of van windscreen, but looking across to the EX30 speedo was very distracting, a shame as this could be a good car.
Ordered mine in the UK last Nov. Just got a call from the dealer that it's to be delivered in 8 days from today. Twin Motor Ultra. Can't wait to blast off from stops. Thanks for the review.
@@ItsOnlyElectric I test drove it today and was very disappointed Too many intrusive warning sounds just by looking at the screen and software glitchy. Felt premium but efficiency is unlikely to be great with the shape and twin motor version. So I’ve cancelled my order😕
Your outfit is getting more and more stylish and the vehicles more and more beautiful. ;-) Volvo and Polestar have managed to create a wonderful and aesthetically pleasing synthesis between the combustion look and the new design of electric verhicles. i Like their design line. The only annoying thing is the plastic buttons on the steering wheel.
Thanks man! Better cars need a better outfit. Need to match the cars. 👍🙂 The heptics buttons are a bit hard to get used to. It's more looks than practicality.
I am reposting this comment because I posted it mistakenly under your Ioniq 5 review. I enjoyed this review. It was thorough and fair. I think that the EX30 does have rear speakers in the doors, though.
S now I get it.. first thought it was for the ex30 but discovered it was for the Ioniq 5. 🙂 I looked for speaker's but couldn't find any in the doors. Only sub and bar. Maybe I missed something.
Yes you guys are correct! Checked my videos and saw the speaker grills at the lower part of the back door trims. Also double checked the specs from Harman Kardon.
I'm glad you said it feels premium and has Volvo DNA because I get tired of people saying it is Chinese and doesn't feel like a Volvo (it's Chinese constructed, but designed in Sweden by teams at Volvo Sweden). Everything about this car in terms of its design is Volvo. Yes, the tablet thing is in Tesla but it is still something that makes sense in a Volvo. The Zeekr X is more luxo minded, and bigger, but this is more Volvo minded in its approach. The price as tested isn't the "bargain" the base model is. Nice review.
The car is built the same way it was built. Before Geely bought Volvo Cars. Volvo will always be the Swedish company even if there owners is Chinese. The cars all work is done in Sweden and same with Polestar. The only thing happening in China is the Production. Soon Polestar and Volvo will be in Production in USA and Europe.
It is not Volvo dna to make a car that is not as safe as before. To much horsepower in a small car like this. Suspention can't keep up with the power and putting everything into a screen is not Volvo dna. The chinese got to much to say in this so more just a Volvo badge on a car. Range is also not as the specs. Maybe because of the power eat up the range.
@michaelcolind5082 a electric motor with more peak power does not consume more power then a small motor as long as you don't floor it. Doesn't work like combustion engines. Only a very small difference.
Every reviewer says suspension on the soft side.. Its a first hearing that from you. Well my local dealership has it for test. I will find out myself also. Thanks for all the feedback . Appreciated
I’m definitely going to get myself one once we get some in the USA! I work at McGrath Volvo in Barrington, and can’t wait to test drive the twin motor!!!
All lithium ion batteries can be charged to 100%, but it accelerates degradation if it stays at 100%. Unlike NCA/NCM, LFP must be charged full frequently to avoid misreading SoC/range and associated problems such as cell imbalance. Most EV OEMs recommend 100% charging because they view it as a reasonable trade-off -- it potentially hurts range and durability, but comes at a lower cost.
I’ve just ordered one, my first ev and I’m as excited as I am nervous as I live in rural Wales, UK, famously terrible charge network, however home charger fitted so hopefully my ev journey is a good one. Great review and as I never have rear seat passengers I am happy with the size!
I just wish it had more range 475km WLTP means around 350km highway range (120km/h). The new ID.3 GTX has 600km range. That’s roughly equivalent 450km highway range. That 100km difference makes quite a big difference for convenience.
I hate that manufacturers are forgetting that cars vibrate when moving and we need buttons, for safety and accuracy, is not safe to go in and out of menus to adjust the temperature, is easier and faster to do that in a button. That minimalistic approach is cumbersome and can cause problems
Reasonable point. They did however design functions such as temp change etc. to rely more on voice assistant. Once you get the hang of it, it’s like asking a front passenger adjust the heat for you. I’d advise any buyer of this car to properly assess all the buttons available and require the salesmen to show all ways to drive safely prior to purchase. That said, I like this car 👍
On Volvo Canada's website, they don't even confirm which models have LFP batteries. That would be like not telling you the volume and number of cylinders on your ICE car's motor. The car might be good but the marketers and salespeople still don't get it.
I take delivery of an ex30 plus hopefully in the next week or so here in the U.K. one thing to note is there is a fairly major software update due which is why I can’t have the vehicle immediately
One of the electric car review channels that gives me the most confidence. Congratulations and thank you for your work! 👏 In my humble opinion, as a customer looking to buy an electric car, this EX30 is overvalued "only" because it has the Volvo badge. I would like you to compare it with the Smart #3, as they are in the same compact crossover SUV category, both based on the Geely Group's Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform and with approximate prices. Smart #3 has an interior that seems more careful/premium, more space in the back seats, better aerodynamics and you don't need to go to the most expensive option to have HUD, heat pump, 360º camera, etc... and it has OTA I don't particularly like the animation in the infotainment but nothing is perfect... I read that Smart is not sold in the US. Is that why it doesn't appear in most of the comparisons that are made? 🙌
@@ItsOnlyElectric Zeekr does not yet have a commercialization plan in Portugal... (despite Zeekr's interior design director being Portuguese 😅) #3 Premium will be comparable to the EX30 Ultra (RWD; 200kw/ 272hp; 19" wheels 🤠Geely+Mercedes-Benz vs Geely+Volvo. I agree with you when you say that the EX30 will be for a young audience or for older people (without children or for whom their children are already grown up - like me lool). Same for #3 Cupra; ID3 or MG4 are also small cars but I think with less interesting finishes.
@cristinaviveiros5377 #3 is interesting indeed. And I'm really impressed by geelys SEA platform. Here in Sweden the Zeekr X are better equipped (more premium interior) for the same prove as the EX30. Prefer the exterior of the EX30 though.
Hi, had a test drive in the EX30 last week and loved it so much I ordered The Ultra Twin Motor version. I only found one thing that I disliked and I disliked it A LOT !!! The harman Kardon badge on the soundbar is permanently reflected in the windscreen. It is jut so annoying.
Got mine this week finally in the UK. Things to note. The control screen is fiddly of course with all normal things buried deep inside. That's still fine, if it would, if only it would freakin save the settings. Things like switching off the LKA, speed limiter/ACC function toggle selection, they reset to factory settings on car power down. This is a serious deal breaker for me because I prefer to use the speed limiter than ACC which is the default function. There is also a bug that limits charging speed to 1.3kw thereabouts and needs to be manually corrected. Again this resets to the limited speed after every drive and I need to remember to fiddle and correct it from the display before plugging in the charger. Hopefully this is a bug and will be fixed soon. But the blasts off this car provides, nothing short of pure madness..yee haw!! You see me this second, now you don't.
Thanks for reporting and congratulations to a nice car! Sounds like some software fixes are needed. "You see me this second, now you don't" love that sentence! 🤣🤣
Going to test drive a Blacked Out Dual Motor Plus on Saturday. For me, it's the best in its segment, looks wise, and performance. Maybe battery range is lacking, but can't have it all.
Please try to sit in the right seat with the passenger seat moved up enough to give you some comfort. Thanks for the review can't wait to get ours the kids are gone and it sure is perfect for running around town here!
Nice long form review. I’m a big fan of this car on paper, and want to test drive it asap. As a small (not tall) family of 4, I always wanted VW to reinvent the golf as the perfect little electric family hatch for me, but personally the ID3 fell short. Meanwhile, I fell in love with the Polestar 2 and Polestar brand, look and feel. All cars have their flaws, but this seems to be closest to the perfect blend of everything I could want. Plus I think it looks beautiful in and out.
Great review of one of the most interesting new EVs. The Ex30 is more or less the size of the Dolphin, and 5000 € more expensive. It is an interesting offering from Volvo, but I expect these prices to drop down in the future.
Hej 👋🏽 Thanks for the review. As always, you delivered mate 😉 I must admit that I have mixed feelings around the EX30. I love the exterior design and the electric hardware, but the interior doesn’t grow on me. The lack of instrument cluster, the very “cold” interior trim, I don’t know, I would have expected something different. But I’m not the only customer on earth, so, that’s my very personal point of view 😊
Thank you man! Appreciate it! The interior is really Spartan compared to the other cars in the lineup. Mostly to cut costs I guess but also to appeal to a younger audience. As you say the exterior is amazing, all angels. I also like how it drives. I think the dual motor will be sick... 😍
I think you’re right. But I can’t help it, this trim, especially with the recycled doted plastic, it gives me bathroom feels 😅 and there are other quirks that don’t go with me : the sound only coming from the sound bar, as I’m a sound savvy, I really need a nice tailored sound system (but again, that’s very personal), and being tall as you are (1m95), I will have the same issue. Also, the one pedal drive is a must have for me, cannot drive a VE without it. I’m very used to the one on my EC40 (AWD btw), I couldn’t go without. So yeah, all in all, I think this car is not for me. But it’s the reason why there is plenty of different offers on the market 😉
@SeeliLeck3r that bathroom plastics is a watershed I guess. I accept it because it's recycled. But if possible I would choose something more settled. It's in general a too small car for my situation though. 🙂
@@SeeliLeck3rThere are two levels of sound systems. The higher of the two, by Harmon Kardon, has a subwoofer in the trunk, speakers in the back doors and a tweeter in the sound bar. Several reviewers of spoken highly of the HK system.
@@CaryInVictoria Ok, good to know. I have also the HK sound system in my C40, because for me, there is no better place than a car to listen my music (personal choice ^^) So, I was kind of baffled regarding the EX30. Thanks for the insight 🙂
Great and fair review as always. Wonderful job. The car had so much "hype" from all the mainstream media, glad to see your review is nuanced and talks about how this car isn't really cheap when you start looking at options (which you will most likely want). About the car itself, personally I see next to no positives. It is very small but other than that there's not much to it. MG4 is cheaper and has higher range. In my region even a new base Tesla model 3 is cheaper. And when you start adding options, the price of the EX30 just explodes (EX30 "core" with a bigger battery costs the same as a long range model 3, which would still have much longer range and a glass roof to say the least). And if you add more options, the price creeps up into the 50k€+ range. At this price point, unless you desperately want a small car specifically, why not look at another car from Geely, built on the same platform, the Zeekr 001? Overall, great review, but the car itself seems like a hard sell and niche at best. I don't see the mass market appeal that I've hear so much about.
Glad you liked it and thank you for your nu I've feedback! 👍 The EX40/EC40 both seem to do well, and this with a lower entry price may be a hit. I think the attraction, for the market, lies in the brand and many will settle for that. Volvo is a brand with heritage and with a lot of loyal customers that don't want to buy newer brands like tesla. It doesn't always make sense for us techies 🙌
I have a problem with "buy a car on the same platform" from Geely. In 2006 my ex-wife bought a Volvo S40. It was built on the Ford Focus platform. I tried a Mazda 3 and Focus built on the same platform. It felt nothing like the Volvo. The Volvo's ride, body structure, steering feel, brakes, and the engine were quite different than the others on the shared platform. I realize that the EVs motors aren't distinguished like engines but what I say applies to the ride, steering, brakes, and other feel that's in a Volvo vs. another brand. So, to me, just because the Zeekr or Smart share a platform with Volvo doesn't make them Volvo. They don't share panels or interior parts so I see them as different cars. There are times, like the Volvo EM90 vs. Zeekr009 where they are essentially the same car but the EX30 is not that case. And still, the EM90 may drive differently than the Zeekr009. The Zeekr001 is a big car. The Zeekr X is the one you may have in mind but that's bigger than the Volvo EX30 and it has a way different feel in terms of interior. Some prefer it as it is more obviously premium. But I like the cool Scandi style of the Volvo. I think with the EX30 people will find the sweet spot on price and it'll sell well. But it is a small car so it will be fore people wanting a small car.
Spot on! Sharing platforms is a common way of cutting costs when building cars today. Most people don't care and don't even know it, think that goes for 90% of the consumers.. With that said and as you state, it will probably sell really well..
@@benjaminsmith2287 Agree with a lot of it. My point was just that this car is not cheap or a good deal at all on price alone. Even at the base price it's not a good value option in comparison to others in the market and with options, the price creeps up way too close to a car that's far larger, more luxurious, has all of the same features and more as standard. The driving dynamics will naturally be different of those cars, that's why you need test drives and great reviews! So like I said, unless someone is specifically looking for a very small car it's a hard sell. Since it only has its brand name to offer. Sadly I don't see it as a big hit with customers since cars like the Tesla model 3 and mg4, even the new BYD seal are just better value for the money. Even if they are bigger cars from a different segment. For a similar sized car, there's the BYD dolphin. I suppose we will have to see how much customers value a badge of a brand rather than the specifications of the car.
I am considering buying an EX30 however now in the UK prices are very similar for one of these and a basically brand new ultimate c40 or an EQC. Appreciate the ex30 is smaller but you get a lot of kit on the other cars and keen to see what you think if you compared all three cars. Thank you.
C40 single motor extended range sounds like a good alternative. If size doesn't matter the EX30 is a really nice car, good platform with no compromises.
@@ItsOnlyElectric thank you. Both would be the AWD versions that I am looking at with top spec. Basically the same price at the moment if you buy a C40 that is 4 months old with 10 miles on the clock
I'm setting a goal to own this particular EV ( would be my 1st EV ). Currently drive a Volvo S60. I am hoping my plan pans out... Hoping a later version, perhaps a 2025'26 version would incorporate a larger center screen (12.3in) seems too small for Cars now a days. So, hopefully Volvo will address this, I believe the new EX90 has a way larger screen & they should incorporate to this one.! Performance doesn't seem lacking and I don't have much of a commute to work. This would work nicely.
Best informative speaker so far re the X30. I love most about this car. Fell in love when first saw it. Might b concerned bout ride. Dont want to feel bumps n road or railroad tracks, etc. Wonder if am able to get better shocks ? Love the glass top but concerned bout internal heat in summer. How much mor is glass top ? Thought it came standard. Might b concerned that there is no addl screen behind steering wheel. Worry bout too much viewing of screen taking my eyes off road. No one has firm answer when avail in US. Is this made in Belgium ? Feel is worrisome bout China built. Answers please. 🙏
Thanks! It's currently only mad in China but Volvo is working on moving production for Europe to Europe. I especially love the exterior design of it. So cool looking car.
Not impressed, Volvo lost it's ways, no physical controls ? No driver's screen?, nah.. I hate the tablet only, I never expected Volvo to go for this, save your money get a Duster 2024, and enjoy the rest of your money
What's the range like? I've seen a number of TH-cam reviews that say the range and consumption is very poor, the average Kw is very high in daily use. Yesterday I took the EX30 for a test drive, it felt very cheap and plastic for a Volvo, it also felt very unstable on the motorway, checking the Kw consumption on the screen it was always very high, rear seat space was absolutely terrible and of no use for anyone other than a small child, rear boot space was also tiny. Straight after riding the EX30 I took the EX40 for a drive, the 40 felt immediately a different build quality, more what you expect from Volvo, as for space it was perfect in the rear and boot, the main problem was the 40 felt like it was 10 years older than the current modern equivalent EV's on the market and seriously in need of an update. A last thing I almost forgot was the buttons on the steering wheel on the EX30 were terrible in use, I had previously heard about this and it was true, I believe they have updated this for the 2025 model. The experience in it and driving it I described to my wife made me think like driving in a shopping trolly.
I did a range test im this video: th-cam.com/video/8xlsBueTr0E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=55T5XzwThrcWBGA0 Also releasing a test of the ZEEKR X soon (same platform).
thanks for the detailed review, very rare to find so many details, only thing missed is the AC system, while sitting in the back is it good enough? I already bought one on pre-sale, but thanks a lot for the details.
Glad you liked it! Always try to cover as much as possible. Didn't notice any lack of aircondition at the rear..but good to know is that I didn't drive it in any extreme Weather conditions.
Never use OPD in my ID.3. I drive with anticipation letting the car coast as much as possible - never annoying those behind 🙂 coasting gives saves battery more than regen! However I look forward to the soft OPD in Volvo, when I get it in a month. I may combine driving with foresight with the benefits of OPD. Another approach I use a lot is driving with adaptive pilot. Volvo makes it very easy to disengage when approaching a red light and re-engaging when green. Your just flip the right stalk down. This "zero pedal" is my favourite😊
The regen in the id3 too weak for OPD. 😔 You can coast with real OPD if you use your foot carefully. But I guess it's more of an individual factor of how one liked to drive.
@@ItsOnlyElectric ID.3 does not have OPD - no complete stop. Its just one level of regen, and quite strong. Anyway regen will never recover in full the energy used to accelerate
Does the driver’s seat raise up - not forward towards the steering wheel but the whole seat raise UP towards the roof for shorter drivers to see over the steering wheel?
It's a smart car, created especially for that segment of 2 adults. Here in Belgium it's also really targeted on the business car market where it is a great junior/medior car. Because make no mistake this is a SMALL car. In our case we looked into different electric cars that weren't too wide because of space limitations we have. This is smaller than an VW ID3 which looks ridiculously small next to this car but is slightly wider and longer. Now compare those two and I can tell you the VW isn't even close to being the same quality 😂
Legroom is something that the car isn’t supposed to have. Maybe for kids or smaller people but not grown men like you. 99% of all people don’t have anyone in the back seat.
Weird how this car is roughly same dimensions as my Bolt EV and has WAY MORE leg room and trunk room! Unless I’m missing something because our measurements aren’t in metric.
Fantastic video, I've now watched a few EX30 video's from varying people on TH-cam as I think it's good to get a better idea from many testers rather than just one (no offence). But all the same great video, thank you. I've just bought into my first EV (not Volvo sadly), but only because I still can't afford the XC40 or EX30 (for now). I would like to see what happens when they do a facelift version, hopefully just internal features as the outside of the car is indeed a beautiful looking car. I would hope to be able to in buy maybe an XC40 recharge or the EX30 in 3 years time. For sure I think a heads up display is needed and hopefully Volvo will listen to this type of feedback and bring that feature in, and the main screen itself looks good, the size of the numerals displaying speed look small and could (to me) look like they need to be making them larger they don't look big enough in the video. Apple CarPlay is needed too, as is the voice commands which I have not heard anyone say if you can command like in the XC40 temperature adjustments etc which would be good. Keep up the good reviews. Tack.
@@ItsOnlyElectric Thanks for that reply, it does seem strange it hasn't really been mentioned by anyone. Everyone just seems to be making an issue of the screen and only using that for all the main issues of temperature and volume and other things, very odd. But thanks again for clearing that up, just hope they bring the heads up display. 🙂 Tack
@@warrenfontana1325 The one we drove the voice control wouldn't work, every time we tried it the message came back "I'm sorry I'm offline at the moment" if this is fixed along with the rest of the software issues it will make it much better. Also I'd be looking for a aftermarket HUD or similar to display speed nearer to eyeline
@@fredbloggs72 the offline issue I’m led to believe is the cars on test don’t have a connection via a SIM card for example, I know when I had an XC40 only when it had a connection via a SIM card in the device in the boot or a connection via my mobile phone it worked well so maybe the same. But totally agree re a heads up display for speed etc. 👍🏻
One could probably assume that an electric follower to the HC 60 will be a larger version of this one. Then one hopes for a HUD and some less cheap material...
Hard to judge this car. With the big battery it would work as a first/only car for me that have one kid in the back seat and need to tow the occasional trailer. But the again, a Model Y RWD gives plenty of room, better charging, bigger screen (it really looks too small!), and proper one-pedal driving. A downside for the MY is more cumbersome in city traffic and tight places. As a second car with the small battery you have to put it up against simpler cars like Citroen e-C3, and then I am not sure it justifies the higher price. Then you have to also consider it is made in China.
@@ItsOnlyElectricsorry, i meant if the car is off. Youre away from the car. Will the usb-c slots still charge? I like to fly drones. And it would be nice of i’m flying and away from the car. The other batteries get charge.
@BangBangSystems don't think so..but not sure. Maybe there's a function for it on the screen..otherwise you can avoid closing the födoorvfully and it may stay on .
@@ItsOnlyElectric beyond the inherent benefits of being tall, I really do appreciate seeing the limits stress tested to the outliers. Most media provided by automakers make it look like an entire sports team will fit in a sedan, but they're all 4'11. Keep it up, I look forward to bingeing your videos.
@@ItsOnlyElectric I'm in the US, so it's always hilarious to see the lies people tell themselves that they need an F-150 for their 5'8 frame when a Prius actually gives them nearly identical headroom. A Swedish and proper tall person's point of reference is much appreciated, especially on non-comical sized vehicles.
My xc40 extended range, after 5 month used never got even close to 450kms autonomy. Today, at 80% battery only gives 270kms (15º Celsius outside). I would test the car for one day before buying one, don’t go after this reviews. Volvo never more.
Sad to hear. I'm not stating that the real range matches the stated WLTP. I always do real world range tests with all cars I test. One on the way for this one too, spoiler it doesn't achieve 475km.
Stating LFP gives the same range as a NMC because the former may be charged continuosly to 100% is a used but deceiving marketing trick. Just tell everyone how long it takes to charge an nmc to 80% and compare it to charging the same kWh to 100% in a LFP. The the difference will be astounding.
Yes you are right regarding charging. Most of the time you charge at home though and the main use case for the EX30 is probably not long trips. So for that use case the NMC pack doesn't add that much to the equation but price.
@@ItsOnlyElectric Exactly - NMC for those who regularly use the car for longer trips, but LFP fof the win, when the majority of driving is a daily commute!
Ultimately the Tesla philosophy of controlling everything from the screen (including glove box !) will most probably turn me off buying it. I see new EU regulations are imposing requirements to use more buttons too. If it had a Head Up Display, that might make me reconsider.
@@UgglemannenFTW The design of the Volvo and Zeekr are done by two different teams. The Zeekr009 and Volvo EM90 is where Zeekr did most of the work. That's not the case with the Volvo EX30 vs. the Zeekr X. The Volvo's work was done by the same teams, well most of them, that did the work on the XC40. If you look close, you can see a lot of XC40 in the EX30, just modernized.
I was waiting to see one in the flesh and found it to be too small. It's really a hot hatch, as the back is too small for adults to sit in, and the boot too small for prams or strollers. I bought the XC40 as it was a usable, practical size for a family.
@@ItsOnlyElectric I went Twin Ultimate Recharge, with Fjord Blue/interior. Very happy with the purchase, first Volvo but very impressed with Google assistant, Google integration, the driving system, and the performance, which will all be shared with the EX30. Although space was critical, the EX30 forecabin is pretty good, lots of leg space. However, I think the XC40 display behind the seating wheel is excellent, and the missus isn't convinced by single central screen futurism.
Thank you for the comprehensive review. Please consider one change to you assessment process. When assessing interior room, your personal assessments will always be flawed given you sit well beyond the height/size for an average male globally. I am extremely confident to say the EX30 was NEVER designed to accommodate a person of your height sitting behind yourself as a driver. Context is critical as I am sure you would not expect to be accommodated in the back seat of a Porsche 911. So when you describe the rear of the EX30 as tight, it is misleading as a male/female of average height would describe the rear space as okay /sufficient. A secondary observation: With you being a tall and muscular male, you may often get caught buying shirts too small for your frame. If you watch the driving sequences of your video, your shirt is pulling tightly to indicate you need to go up one size or more in your shirts.
Thank you for watching, I'm glad you found it informative. The reason for testing it this way is to be able to compare it with all the only cars I have tested to use it as a reference. I'm also staring that I'm not a good göfor for someone to put in that back seat.
Good design but with MAJOR compromises. Its entry price is only relatively competitive but you get nothing with the car. You have to go with the bigger package and that's priced higher than a Model 3/Y and marginally cheaper than the ID.4 RWD with the highest trim. It doesn't ride/drive as a Volvo and has some abysmal safety compromises that goes against Volvo's philosophy...
@@ItsOnlyElectric keeping your eyes off the road to do the simplest of things: like watching your speed, control the climate settings etc. Everything is controlled via the screen and when you look at the screen while driving the car beeps at you for not keeping your eyes on the road. That's just silly and not very thought-out - atypical of a Volvo. The other thing is the body-roll of the car in corners. The RWD is simply too powerful for its own good, causing the rear to slip in tight corners. Again, not very Volvo-ish. Before you say that Model 3 and Model Y also have packed everything in the center screen, remember that their screen is bigger and installed horizontally. It's still a problem IMO, but not as severe as the EX30.
@Emaratilfy Not that much body roll compared to other cars. The suspension is rather stiff compared to others. Agree regarding the screen, I want a bigger screen and horizontally aligned.
What is it with European testers? Has the U.S. form of bastardised English insidiously crept in to European English? You pronounce kilo-watt, kilo-gram,kilo- joule correctly: why not the correct kilo-metre? It is the same construct of words. Kilo= a thousand, metre is the distance. Please, please correct this anomaly!
Score the EX30 1 to 10!
1, after a test drive I was very disappointed, the basic size and layout are great, the software and build quality is rubbish. also NCAP are considering downgrading this type of large screen no buttons.
Thanks for your insight. 👍Anything specific regarding build quality? Is the choice of materials or panel gaps ?
@fredbloggs72 Ok sounds like a prototype car? I had none of those issues and had it for a whole week..
9, very nice small powerful car!
Ordered mine in the UK last Nov. Just got a call from the dealer that it's to be delivered in 8 days from today. Twin Motor Ultra. Can't wait to blast off from stops. Thanks for the review.
Nice! Twin motor, great performance in that one
Congrats:) May it keep you safe and deliver that "Volvo DNA" 🦾looking into it!
How is it?
This is the best review of the EX30 online bar none. Congratulations. I will rewatch it before the test drive.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed! 👍
@@ItsOnlyElectric I test drove it today and was very disappointed Too many intrusive warning sounds just by looking at the screen and software glitchy. Felt premium but efficiency is unlikely to be great with the shape and twin motor version. So I’ve cancelled my order😕

This video is now considered to be the single greatest human achievement of all time!
Yes, without any doubt! 😂
Hi from Australia, 10 out of 10 for both the review and the car. I should have my Moss Yellow SMER in about a month, can't wait.
Cool color choice! I hope you will enjoy it. 👍
Its a smart looking car.. really like it. I just hope Volvo can make all its cars value for money like this..
Yes definitely smart!
The heptics buttons are a bit hard to get used to.

I looked for speaker's but couldn't find any in the doors. Only sub and bar. Maybe I missed something.
There is in the doors also I believe.
i've tested the ex30 and it has speakers in the backdoors, very close to the frame though. incredible sound imop.@@ItsOnlyElectric
Totally agree, it's a lot of Volvo dna! Thanks for watching and commenting
@@michaelcolind5082in EVs range is almost never as the specified WLTP, it’s individual to each driver.
Every reviewer says suspension on the soft side.. Its a first hearing that from you. Well my local dealership has it for test. I will find out myself also. Thanks for all the feedback . Appreciated
It's not soft, it's sporty. Did compare it to a byd Dolphin. The Volvo is a lot firmer. Video coming.
I’m definitely going to get myself one once we get some in the USA! I work at McGrath Volvo in Barrington, and can’t wait to test drive the twin motor!!!
Hope you get one soon. What's the plan for the us market?
Pretty sure I’m going to get the single motor.
@@ItsOnlyElectric we are likely to see customer cars being sent in late may, or early June!
Perfect time of the year to get a new car.
Nice choice! With a home charger you will be all fine! :)
Voice controls and steering wheel buttons help
Reasonable point. They did however design functions such as temp change etc. to rely more on voice assistant. Once you get the hang of it, it’s like asking a front passenger adjust the heat for you.
I’d advise any buyer of this car to properly assess all the buttons available and require the salesmen to show all ways to drive safely prior to purchase.
That said, I like this car 👍
On Volvo Canada's website, they don't even confirm which models have LFP batteries. That would be like not telling you the volume and number of cylinders on your ICE car's motor. The car might be good but the marketers and salespeople still don't get it.
But they state the battery capacity and range?
I take delivery of an ex30 plus hopefully in the next week or so here in the U.K. one thing to note is there is a fairly major software update due which is why I can’t have the vehicle immediately
Yes, heard about that. EX30 deliveries includes a key fob since the fully phone as a key is waiting a update.
Hope you get it very soon!
One of the electric car review channels that gives me the most confidence. Congratulations and thank you for your work! 👏
In my humble opinion, as a customer looking to buy an electric car, this EX30 is overvalued "only" because it has the Volvo badge.
I would like you to compare it with the Smart #3, as they are in the same compact crossover SUV category, both based on the Geely Group's Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform and with approximate prices.
Smart #3 has an interior that seems more careful/premium, more space in the back seats, better aerodynamics and you don't need to go to the most expensive option to have HUD, heat pump, 360º camera, etc... and it has OTA
I don't particularly like the animation in the infotainment but nothing is perfect...
I read that Smart is not sold in the US. Is that why it doesn't appear in most of the comparisons that are made?
🙌
I'm really trying to get hold of a #3 but still no success. I really want to try it. Next up probably the Zeekr X.
Thanks for your support 🙂
@@ItsOnlyElectric Zeekr does not yet have a commercialization plan in Portugal... (despite Zeekr's interior design director being Portuguese 😅)
#3 Premium will be comparable to the EX30 Ultra (RWD; 200kw/ 272hp; 19" wheels
🤠Geely+Mercedes-Benz vs Geely+Volvo.
I agree with you when you say that the EX30 will be for a young audience or for older people (without children or for whom their children are already grown up - like me lool). Same for #3
Cupra; ID3 or MG4 are also small cars but I think with less interesting finishes.
@cristinaviveiros5377 #3 is interesting indeed. And I'm really impressed by geelys SEA platform.
Here in Sweden the Zeekr X are better equipped (more premium interior) for the same prove as the EX30. Prefer the exterior of the EX30 though.
I don't need a small car, but I sure do like the looks of the exterior !
Refreshing
Hi, had a test drive in the EX30 last week and loved it so much I ordered The Ultra Twin Motor version. I only found one thing that I disliked and I disliked it A LOT !!! The harman Kardon badge on the soundbar is permanently reflected in the windscreen. It is jut so annoying.
I say that exact same thing. You'll get used to it. Congratulations to a nice car
Nice! Blacked out looks badass!
Please try to sit in the right seat with the passenger seat moved up enough to give you some comfort. Thanks for the review can't wait to get ours the kids are gone and it sure is perfect for running around town here!
For that purpose the EX30 will be a perfect fit.
Same. Empty nest and need small for urban living. In the US.
I really like it too. Sharp looks and good tech.
Great review of one of the most interesting new EVs. The Ex30 is more or less the size of the Dolphin, and 5000 € more expensive. It is an interesting offering from Volvo, but I expect these prices to drop down in the future.
Comparison between EX30 and Dolphin on the way. 👍
Hej 👋🏽 Thanks for the review. As always, you delivered mate 😉
I must admit that I have mixed feelings around the EX30.
I have also the HK sound system in my C40, because for me, there is no better place than a car to listen my music (personal choice ^^)

@davidmorrison5974 good choice! I think you will enjoy it much. 👍
Beautiful car. Already orderd mine and also orderd a Polestar 3.
Nice! What spec did you go for on both cars? 🙂
The EX40/EC40 both seem to do well, and this with a lower entry price may be a hit.
@@algimantaszaltauskas4305 In the US there are no good-looking, premium, small EVs at the moment. This fills that need.
Great video - well presented

Sounds like a great plan! And as you say, a bigger screen wouldn't hurt. 👍💪

The experience in it and driving it I described to my wife made me think like driving in a shopping trolly.

thanks for the detailed review, very rare to find so many details, only thing missed is the AC system, while sitting in the back is it good enough?
I know that's my complaint. I own one myself and really miss OPD
The LFP chemestry should be charged to 100% for BMS reasons, its still recommended to go only to 80% for longevity.
Does the driver’s seat raise up - not forward towards the steering wheel but the whole seat raise UP towards the roof for shorter drivers to see over the steering wheel?
Yes it does

Very detail review. Do this car got dashcam mode which will record when accident?
Thank you!
Not sure about the dashcam and didn't see any function for it but could have missed it.
Good points! I have the id3 myself and the rear seat space is a lot bigger.
Legroom is something that the car isn’t supposed to have. Maybe for kids or smaller people but not grown men like you. 99% of all people don’t have anyone in the back seat.
Agree. It's a small hatch. And I'm stating that in the vid. 👍🙂

Tack.
Thanks!
You can adjust temp, open windows etc with voice commands.

Will be a lot bigger and more premium for sure.
The ex30 looks like a warm hatch i kinda love it. But i need a family car back headroom kinda tight for tall fat people like my family
😂🤣 maybe the EX90 then or the EX60?
Cheapest version in Ireland with no extras is about €46,000.
Agree! You need to be brand aware to choose it. Volvo has a lot of loyal customers and is a brand with a clear strategy

@PaulHo haha...that's true! 😂😂 Not every car is for me though, one of few downsides being tall.
Nice to have you onboard. New videos on the way,! 👍
😂
What if the driver has to get out of the car and leave passengers inside with air and audio on? Can that be done or will they have to cook in silence?
You leave the key I guess.
Nice vid
Thanks
Small car, large price. Got it.
Is there a shade for the panoramic sun roof?
No shade. But it's tinted.
Thanks
Thanks 🙏
I know there’s a good while to wait but the Rivian R3 just killed any interest I previously had in the EX30
the R3 Readly seems amazing. Love the retro design.
hey what’s the exterior colour?
Cloud blue
Good car, but getting expensive TBH, comparing to a TMY entry level.
Exactly
When is the tavascan out please
Will check

I really want this car but the lack of a HUD makes it a no for me.
HUD would be such a good add-on.
@@ItsOnlyElectric let's hope they make it an option.
here in usa i wouldn't get any ev except tesla until they all have nacs built in. not worth it at all without it.
I always count space my how many fists I can fit
Haha....🤣🤣 Standard measurement
I got the sister car the smart#1
Nice! Happy with it?
No heads-up display is a no-go for me
Would be great to have one.
I was waiting to see one in the flesh and found it to be too small. It's really a hot hatch, as the back is too small for adults to sit in, and the boot too small for prams or strollers. I bought the XC40 as it was a usable, practical size for a family.
The back seat is kind of it's Achilles heel. What version of the xc40 did you go for?
@@ItsOnlyElectric I went Twin Ultimate Recharge, with Fjord Blue/interior. Very happy with the purchase, first Volvo but very impressed with Google assistant, Google integration, the driving system, and the performance, which will all be shared with the EX30. Although space was critical, the EX30 forecabin is pretty good, lots of leg space. However, I think the XC40 display behind the seating wheel is excellent, and the missus isn't convinced by single central screen futurism.
Nice choice! Congratulations
Nice car but the lack of paddles is a serious drawback
Paddles for Regen?
@@ItsOnlyElectric Exactly
@user-mk5vs1up2z ok get your point. Regen really weak too. Hopefully fixed with software
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
To be a bit more specific what are the safety compromises we are referring to?

🖐😳 Nice design! Unfortunately Volvo has poor reliability record (and Volvo is now owned by the Chinese!)🔥
New ioniq 5 is much better
Looking forward to test the updated version
What is it with European testers? Has the U.S. form of bastardised English insidiously crept in to European English? You pronounce kilo-watt, kilo-gram,kilo- joule correctly: why not the correct kilo-metre? It is the same construct of words. Kilo= a thousand, metre is the distance. Please, please correct this anomaly!
Haha...hope you enjoyed the video despite my pronunciation of km. 🤣🤣
