    For the last 11 years, I leave Virginia, USA and head down to Nicaragua. Usual stay is about 6 months. I'm a single old white guy. I do this on less than $1000 per month. For those of you who are disillusioned with your country of origin, or even if you're not, just go. Asia, Central America, whatever, breathe some different air, make some new friends.

      @@aidaninspire8381 HI. I have enjoyed my time here in Nicaragua, but it's not for everyone. It's not an exciting country, though it is naturally beautiful. There are no high rise buildings and Managua is loud and hot. But I live rural and quiet, and for that it's good. Learning a little Spanish and buying a small motorcycle to get around improves the experience. I would still choose it over other Central American countries, in spite of its imperfections. 90 days upon arrival and then 30 at a time after that. Haircut is still less than $2 and food is boring but affordable. I'm 65 and have no shortage of women friends.

      Until the banks go under taking all fiat currency's with them, any savings will be gone, Government pension's will be digital CBDC. Now what will you do when this happens, in the past this thing in retiring in a different country was great but today's issues makes it very complicated.

    Great advice. I really think Thailand beats almost anywhere for quality of life. Weather, beach, food prices, cost of living, eating out, and even lovely women. The only thing that stops most of us from going is our life is here. Friends, house, holiday home, boat, fishing spots, family, and for me Grandchildren. I just want to be involved in their lives, I have a great life in New Zealand, and just couldn't leave it

    Very good advice. I'm heading back to Thailand in 2 weeks time, and all going well it will be for a very very long time. I used to live there, but had to return to the UK a few years back, and it's been a long slog over here. I can never understand why so many retired people stay in put in the UK waiting to die a miserably, suppose it's a big gamble and the thought of it scares them.

      Maybe they're just taking his advice?
      We live in Australia and the price of houses and everything else is going through the roof.
      Rents have also gone way up and rentals are incredibly scarce to access in many places so if you leave and have to come back there may be some big hurdles in the way unless you have a lot of money in your pot.
      Half a million dollars won't buy you much in most cities and virtually nothing in a few of them and that's just the start of it all.
      From what I see most got to places like this because they're cheap but going back in 5 years certainly won't be imo.

    I am on the same plan. I hope to never set foot in America again. They can keep their insane politics, abusive policing, generally angry attitudes, and food that slowly kills them. My life is so much better after five years in Thailand. After 13 years on BP medication, I am free of it and am in the best physical shape I have been in in decades. I can watch football here too. I only miss those lovely clear running trout streams which can not be replaced here. There is always some sacrifice.

    I don't see any point in going back to the UK to end up in a care home, pay loads of money for it, and then a few years down the line die in said care home. I mean that is what care homes are for in the uk, where your off spring hasn't the time or inclination to take care of you in old age, even though you spend 20 years or so bringing them up! Compare this to Asia when children/wives/families do take care of you. So yes I would prefer to end my days here in SE Asia with my loving Thai wife who wants to take care of me when I am old.

      @RetiredandLivingthedream no worries and yes you are right. Ive been married to my thai wife for 10 years. She sold her house and farm in udon thani. And also bought her own house in the uk. We rent both of them out total income of £3600 a month. More than enough to live a good life in Thailand. So like I said make money at home with no risk and spend it in Thailand. If anyone is interested. We rent out to serco. 5 year contract. No maintenance and guaranteed rent. Because its the government contract. They fill them with migrants. Let them have the uk. We are done with it

    Thanks Les some good advice. I have been to Thailand several times and currently live in Australia but originally from UK. Western countries are so expensive to retire in . I’m nearly 70 and still working full time . Retirement in Thailand is probably the best idea but I guess must include an eventual end of life plan . It’s quite a tricky process because as you say funds are limited in old age. I guess a worst case scenario would be a stroke and with that limited funds would be very challenging. The easy thing is to ignore that possibility but there needs to be a plan of some sort.

    Thanks Les for your insight. A lot depends on whether a person is single or married in their home country. The vast majority of your subscribers are ‘mature’-aged males i would guess that most have been divorced in their home country. If a person has children or grandchildren from a past marriage, many ‘expats’ wish to see the kids from time to time. It is fairly obvious why most mature men gravitate to Thailand or the Philippines and not to Malaysia. The east coast of Malaysia has superb beaches and a low cost of living, but the lifestyle is quiet and family-oriented.

    I would suggest that “no going back” can only be achieved if you avoid large risk taking life decisions, such as:
    1. shacking up with a bargirl and being conned into building a house on her family’s rural plot etc;
    2. Pub crawling day in day out drinking too much, slowly destroying your liver and shortening your quality and duration of life expectations;
    3. Limiting your human company to people with whom you have no cultural connection and can only achieve shallow exchanges of ideas.
    4. Trying to live the lifestyle of a 20 something when you’re actually 50,60+ in lived years.
    Just my thoughts from far away.

    If you invest your savings wisely, diversify and don't be seduced by get rich quick schemes, there is no reason to lose all your money in the long run. Of course, the older you get, the more likely short term corrections will affect your income. Many retirees don't have a big enough portfolio to support themselves from income alone, even in SE Asia, so they end up drawing on the capital and eventually running out of money. But most retirees do have access to some sort of pension, so as long as they can live off that and their investment income, they should be good until their final days. If not, they need to look at their lifestyle and make more affordable life style choices.
    One drawback of retiring to poorer countries is that there is little opportunity to generate income. In the West, although the cost of living is higher, early retirees can still work part time or casual which is good financially and also for your mental and physical health. I see a lot of retirees in Asia just spend their day lolling about eating and drinking and having no real purpose in life. Many have a younger local girlfriend who has her own needs and wants and will quickly drain the coffers if you let her. Again, it's about living within your means which includes what type of relationships you can afford to maintain.

    • @RetiredandLivingthedream
      @RetiredandLivingthedream  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Living in Thailand can improve your lifestyle and health but as you suggest having no interest in anything other that eating and drinking it can also shorten your live. Having been retired now for 14 years I love every day and can say never board I enjoy not having to work. I have more choice. Keeping busy keeping the mind active gives you enjoyment. It a different way to live. Enjoy Retirement for as long as you can, Getting old does not last long.

      @@tyvidthat's for sure, but it is not so much about age as what type of work you have done or can do. I'm in my 60s and work fully remotely from SE Asia in a finance field. All I need is internet and my laptop. And being self employed I don't have a boss telling me i can't do that and have to come into some office somewhere. A lot of older people could consider transitioning to consulting or self employment before they retire and also training to get the skills that would be useful in a remote job or business.

      @@bouffon1 I stand corrected if this is true but I understand differently. What does it mean to be put in palliative care?
      Overview. Palliative care is specialized medical care that focuses on providing relief from pain and other symptoms of a serious illness. It also can help you cope with side effects from medical treatments but sometimes pain needs to be controlled and this involves money. But we all have a choice. Care always costs unless you have family members who will help in this situation but sadly there is always a cost. Lets get practical i.ve only been here 4 yrs and can count 8 people who I khow brought all there savings sold house etc and moved over here to find love
    Some absolutely dillusional thinking its not going to cost
    With some thats ok but when your partners want houses ,land, gold etc people can't say no, so they are constantly forking out, and when the atm runs dry what do you do
    Personally I wouldn't put all your eggs in one basket and people do have families out of Thailand as well I think it selfish of people not to think of there own families and just concentrate on complete new family s that are not there flesh and blood
    But some people think different and others bring all there money over here and are left with nothing
    Thais know how to spend your cash thats for sure as I've seen

      It is up to the individual, what is a lot to some is not much to others. But if you met a girl in the UK she would want nothing out of the relationship. Relationships are much more affordable here than in the UK, But I accept many have lost everything thinking with their small brain.

    Enjoyed the common sense video. I have a very important question about religion. Does the country have and or tolerate Muslims? Look at America, France, UK, Ireland regarding Islam. How does it compare? I have personally been looking for a country that has made Islam illegal and banned it. So I can settle down there. If this is a topic you would rather avoid, I completely understand.

    • @williamsmith7340
      @williamsmith7340 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      There are Muslims in Thailand. Mostly in the Deep South, but also small numbers in Bangkok and other cities. The ones in the south have militant separatists among them who cause problems there, and which makes the place dangerous. However, in other parts of the country they are far less than 10% of the population, and aside from some minor parts of their women’s dress, they seem to have adopted a more casual Thai approach to life. Hijab, but no veils or black bag dresses. They also know that this is a predominantly and profoundly Buddhist country, and that many of the locals, plus the government will not tolerate any of the exclusive intimidation tactics they successfully employ in the West. Therefore, they keep their heads down and don’t look to exercise special privilege or disrupt the natural flow of the majority culture.

    Don’t sink all your money into property car etc, buying a property in Thailand is not an investment, it might be for your wife/partner. At 72 years old my intention is to rent as I have done for the last few years, I could never recoup any money if I lost everything I had.by buying a property, car etc.

      You prefer constantly being at the risk of being robbed, stabbed, paying massive housing and living costs and taxes, tons of Muslim immigration, fewer and fewer jobs etc in the UK vs paradise settings, 1 quid meals, 200 quid a month for housing, virtually zero crime, constant adventure and fun and maybe just potentially getting ripped off a couple quid in a taxi scam once in a blue moon in Thailand? By all means, enjoy the UK.

      May be advisable to avoid being a Thai tax resident for the next couple of years. Stay in Thailand for less than 180 days, and do some traveling around SE Asia and your home country the rest of the year. After that, you may have a better idea of the actual tax implications.
