As you are an expert on Thailand and Thai culture perhaps you can help me with some questions, one of those I will ask here if you dont mind, How long did it take you to learn to speak Thai, and where did you learn ?--Thanks.
Agreed %100 to many people want to come to Australia for economic reasons not for persecution
I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.
I feel your pain mate, as a fellow retiree, I’d suggest you look into passive index fund investing and learn some more. For me, I had my share of ups and downs when I first started looking for a consistent passive income so I hired an expert advisor for aid, and following her advice, I poured $30k in value stocks and digital assets, Up to 200k so far and pretty sure I'm ready for whatever comes.

As an Australian, I can honestly say most of the problem has been uncontrolled immigration, and then to much relaxation of youth crime laws!
Now I hear they have a Minister for Men's Behaviour over there. WTF is that?

18 months later after retiring here at 39, there really are so few cons compared to having to work until I’m dead back in the USA. My kid is an adult now, doing his thing so I am off doing the same. I take better care of my body here, better care of my brain, better care of my bank account. I think my lack of having like minded foreign friends. Thai men don’t really associate much with foreign men and most “Retirees” here in Thailand are at least 10 years older than I. I’ve still got to find my way when it comes to hobbies as well. I spend too much time relaxing instead of getting out and doing things as I would back in the US. Really those are the only cons I can think of.

@@chinesecrested9528 excuse my ignorance but where abouts is the place you emigrated too? I've never heard of it before! But it has a cool name!
I retired at age 53, so I am in my early 60s. Many of them resisted me because they couldn't understand the idea of not working if it wasn't necessary. I considered the phases of my life. I worked very hard to achieve what I have now, but in my last years, I owe it to myself to "stop and smell the roses." In my instance, I departed the nation after retiring and currently reside in Latin America. It made it possible for me to appreciate my new surroundings while escaping all the bad things that were going on in America. Nobody that I know of regrets retiring has yet to come to me
Nice way to retire. For me, I believe retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My wife and I both spent same number of years in the civil service, she invested through a wealth manager and myself through the 401k. We both still earning after our retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). Haha
It's unfortunate most people don't have such information. I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. I've been making more than a million dollars by just investing through an advisor, and I don't have to do much work. Doesn't matter if the economy is misbehaving; great wealth managers will always make returns
I think this is something I should do, but I've been stalling for a long time now. I don't really know which firm to work with; I feel they are all the same but it seems you’ve got it all worked out with the firm you work with so i surely wouldn’t mind a recommendation

It's all by design, same with Europe and all 5 eye nations. To flood them with immigrants and eventually rid of the white local population.
As someone that wants to move to Thailand...this was very informative. 2 Massages a week sounds good to me.
just as an aside, my wife and I get massages twice a week here in the Philippines in a quality, upscale joint. 90 minute massage is $14US though you can find it cheaper. Primary plus to the Philippines is that more people can wrestle with English than most Thai--but Thailand has better cuisine (imho), it's a bit 'cleaner', and it seems more prosperous than here. We get to Thailand at least once a year.
Unfortunately food in the Philippines is a real let down @@chrisjuricichxl5
@@chrisjuricichxl5Every time I get a massage here (I'm in Metro Manila) it never seems up to par. If you're here, I'd love a recommendation.
As far as the English, I'm just not seeing it. I've taken to Googling pics of what I want and showing them. My last time I had a picture of a bottle of Lactaid. Paired with the Tagalog Google Translate paragraph asking if they had Lactaid or a similar lactose intolerant relief pill, I presented both to the pharmacist.
She disappeared for about 2 minutes, returned and gently placed 2 packets of apple flavored electrolyte powder in front of me.
It's more fun in the Philippines, that's for sure 😂😁😂😁

Great video - loved hearing from Barry. He’s absolutely right that all of a sudden your mental health improves and you don’t need to look in the mirror. You’re told you’re handsome every day and it’s a good ego boost for a 50-something upwards man.
What a great guy! Open honest and genuine. Great interview Jonno! Thank you!
For the elderly who come to live in Thailand, I would like to recommend that the weather in the northern part of Thailand is most comfortable during October to February of every year because after February almost every year there will be forest fires from neighboring countries and high mountains. For good health after February, you should move to relax in Cha-am, Cha-am or the eastern side, Chanthaburi and Trat. If you don't like the chaos of Phuket and Samui. For the elderly, I recommend that you all go to the beach besides Pattaya, there are Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat. But the most important thing is an open-minded attitude. Understanding the culture. Learning a little bit. Respecting the locals. And avoiding bad people. Making friends is like buying a lottery ticket.

The one really good piece of advice I can give anyone moving to Thailand as you will be transferring money to Thailand is get a local account, get a WISE account and get a Revolut account.
What are the for please
@@lukem2260 I have a wise account. Its a service that allow you to transfer money from your normal account to their account. Then when the money is in there you can transfer that to any currency you want. They also get a Bank Card so you have a card to use overseas without all the stupid fees. It costs me around 1% to transfer the money into the account but no fees when buying stuff overseas with the card. I can say it worked fine for me in the United Kingdom, Japan, United Arab Emirates and Australia.
@@lukem2260 WISE and Revolut easily let you convert and spend in multiple currencies, at a much better rate than banks or money changers. Also sllows you to have accounts in different currencies (AUD, USD, EURO.. not available for all currencies tho)

My first name happens to be Barry also but I’m an American born in DC. Lived in the Maryland suburbs until 1956 when I was 12 which is when my mother remarried. My stepfather was from Minnesota so the 3 of us moved from Silver Spring MD to St Paul in October 1956. I’ve never been to any foreign countries except Canada and Mexico but, other than the language barrier, Thailand seems like a beautiful country with many beautiful people. I could never learn the language and I even had trouble learning Spanish. Another good thing about Thailand is their delicious cuisine, especially pad thai. I’ve heard that Belize is also a nice place to retire but never been there either.
Just got back from Hua Hin, it is a great spot, I could see myself retiring there.
Looking to buy on Koh Samui in a year or so and retire with my wife. This was very interesting and helped to stem some of the concern over moving there. Still worry about purchasing real estate with their rules about not owning the land but I’m softening to it. Moving from the Sunshine Coast in our late 60’s to take up residence in another country might involve some culture shock but we are almost certain we will bite the bullet. Thank you for your informative upload.
Great video. I'm from Melbourne, Australia. I found Cambodia the cheapest. The Philippines and Thailand are comparable. Different pros and cons. I personally prefer Thailand for the infrastructure. Prices in Australia? Accommodation and bills are four times the price. Wild women and liquor is what always costs, no matter where you live.

Vietnam is cheaper but there is no retirement visa.
@steveth1000 That's a pity. I've only been there on holiday. Personally I'd like to live in Thailand and split my time between Vietnam and The Philippines.

This might sound "crazy" to some people number 1: things are even more expensive in Denmark than in Australia (on average), secondly: I "retired" right now at 35 years old; meaning I've saved enough money and invested in property to not needing a salary; I am going to stay in Thailand Hua Hin and perhaps Bangkok for the next two years on an Educational Visa; where thai will be practiced every day; I'm going to play golf, go to the cinema get massages....you'd might say: "but you're only 35 why 'retire' now?" because I want to experience this as a non-wounded animal (no kids no wife), I can actually enjoy being there and not sitting in a chair with a beer in the sun thinking about all the loss and trauma in my life, like who wants that, right? Enjoy it now!

Barry talks a lot of sense. I've lived in Bangkok for 27 years and have never had a problem, especially from Thais. They're essentially non-confrontational, unless pushed, in which case more fool you. The rules and regulations here are minimal, and there's always a way around them if necessary. The cost of living, like everywhere, has crept up, but you can still live well on a budget so long as you're careful (buy local, and eat traditional Thai food which is still reasonable). Like everywhere, there are people on the make but you can usually spot them a mile off. Best to avoid. Otherwise, life in Thailand is great, if simplicity and tranquility is what you're looking for. It suits me, at least.
Exactly. It's a drama free zone if you box clever.
Very similar to Vietnam. I know both countries very well. But where exactly is this town that is featured in the interview?
@@starcorpvncj Hua Hin, which is about 3 hours drive south of Bangkok, in the Gulf of Thailand. The King of Thailand often visits there - one of his palaces is located there - and so the resort city is popular among Thais. Lots to do there - a kind of mini-Bangkok by the beach. A bit busy for my taste. I prefer sleepy Haad Chao Samran, still on the coast, but an hour north of Hua Hin.
@@richard0807 Tks very much. I was at the Royal Military College of Australia with the King, then the Crown Prince, of course. I have a letter from him long after he became King.
I used to enjoy going to Sonkla near the Malaysian boarder in the 80s. A fun town in those days.
I've lived and worked in VN for 21 years as an international management consultant. At 73 I have been retired for 6 years and left Vn in late 2022 after 3 years of being VN being locked down due to Covid. However, I visit regularly and am in Saigon right now. Cheers and all the best.
@@starcorpvncj All the best to you, too. I've never been to Songkhla. I'm sure it's lovely, but in recent times it's had its fair share of problems, by all accounts (the Southern Thais generally feel neglected by the powers that be in Bangkok, and often have stronger allegiances to Malaysia). A letter from the current King is very special, indeed. You probably know, but the Royal Family are revered here. Hua Hin is well worth a visit, if ever you're back in the 'Land of Smile'!!

The thought of retirement makes me cry. My apologies to everyone who have retired and filing social security during this time after putting in all those years of work just to lose everything to a problem you weren't to blame for.it's especially difficult for people who are retired.
On my way later this year. Sounds a good place to retire. costs in australia are out of control, 1000 AUD per month seems about the sweet spot for comfort and affordability in thailand. The new visa rules will mean that a lot more people will be retiring there. thanks Barry and Jonny.
1000 per month is only 23000 baht, not enough for a good life.
Double it for a comfortable lifestyle.
I’ve been here nearly 4 years and can’t do 1k. 2500aud for me and that’s in isaan.
Johnny, this is a great video thank you and thank you to the honored guest
I’ve been watching heaps of Thailand videos, but once I hear that Aussie accent, it’s like great someone from home that can speak down to earth with you.
Im 36 and there's nothing i'd like more than to move to Thailand from Australia. Saving some dollars. Expect I'll be there at 40 for a new chapter of life :)
I’ve been here 14 years like the owner of this channel and yes things have gotten more expensive.
But still ridiculously cheap ??
Great interview Jonny and well done for Barry very unbiased….
Wish him all the best for the future!!
Although I lived in the tropics as a kid, I couldn't handle the heat now. Anything over 24 Celsius kills me, and I hate sunny days. rather be where it rains and is cool. Crowded and noisy there too. I pay $160 a week in New Zealand for a cottage in a quiet rural location with idyllic views, and it rains 5 days a week most of the year. No nightlife for miles. Perfect !
You found your "Happy Place" and it sounds beautiful. Enjoy it mate. Barry
That’s sounds perfect to me too my friend. Quieter the better. Best of luck to you.
@NewZealandWild 160 per week .didn't know you could find a rent as low as that anymore in nz.
Sounds like you have a soft spot for Barry's life though 😂😂😂
@WhirlpoolFarmer Not unless you're ready for $2600.00 per week and not $160! Because you'll need every bit of that to enjoy Sweden , Denmark or Norway in the same manner Barry is accustomed too, rest assured! No beers over there for $2 or digs for 500 a month sadly.
Unless you like a tent beside a -25 lake of course....
So, what about for a 62 year old woman. Would she get her ego lifted in the same way as the men do? Just curious as I've been contemplating living between Thailand and Aust., to see if Thailand will bring a more fulfilled life
Aussie here...been to Thailand many times over the years.
Been to Hua Hin three times, the last time was late 2022. On Christmas Day we spent a couple of hours walking up and down a stretch of the beach collecting washed up rubbish - mostly plastic bottles. Weird, but it just felt like a good thing to do.
Have now retired...we've thought on and off about moving to Thailand, but have decided that it's still cheap enough to do longer visits there rather than buy and settle...less red tape/commitment that way. Enjoy...it's a good lifestyle there.
Great video JONNY , BARRY is very interesting, great information, I’ve been there 4 times , love the place , AUSSIE , from HOBART ,I have beautiful THAI lady , I’m back in July , well done JONNY
Really enjoyed this chat, food for thought, maybe I need to go and take a look,💫💥🙏
You can't approve of "no regulations" and complain about pollution. But it was a good video and Barry seems like a great guy.
You need a balance and regulation in the right areas ,Australia is pretty slack when it comes to pesticides regulation, but punitive with driving, Thailand goes to the other way on driving and litter factory's and burning pollution
absolutely loved Hua Hin and can not wait to go back.. My plan is to retired over there for many of the same reasons discussed. The best way to describe the driving over there is CHAOTIC BALLET that simply works.. its a thing of beauty once you get past the fear of dying haha.
I think I will retire in Thailand! 🇹🇭
Best interview ,,, champion effort guys. I live (FIFO worker) in Cha-am with an amazing lady and cannot imagine living anywhere else
It is a must for retirees to social to keep their brains exercising.
Jonny like the video and the gentle man straight forward answering questions because I coming to retire in Thailand end of December 2024 very much appreciated looking forward to the land of smiles terry from Melbourne Australia
Thankyou I just came back to Australia I have a chance to retire in Hae-Hin and this show is convincing me.
Outstanding video Jonny! Barry nailed it. Hua Hin is an awesome place to live!
This is a really good and enjoyable interview/expose of Barry`s new life in Thailand. Just for some clarity, 9000 thb is equal to AUD$409.00, not AUD$250.00. Dont want to gild the lily.
You're right, my maths on the fly was way out. Cheers
Barry seems like the kind of a guy that would make a good friend, he seems to like a good time and has a good sense of humor. Another great video Johhny. If I wasn't in my 70s I would sure as hell head over your way. I was in Thailand in the 60s in the US Navy, enjoyed it then and probably would enjoy the hell out of it now too!
Heh mate me too, I visited Thailand in 70’s with Merchant Navy, always dreamed going to live there. Now is the time to try it out, I’m also 70’s feel like I’m in my 50’s…………..🤣
Australia has definetly changed. I admire anyone that can live overseas permanently. I couldnt do it. The thais are fantastic people but i would miss home after a few months and i would be worried if i had enough money to retire. I think the plan is to semi retire - a trip to thailand every 3 months until i cant travel anymore. But cheers for the video. I hate Sydney with a passion but I still call Australia home.
Really enjoyed that Jonny as I am thinking of getting out of Darwin Australia. Barry is exactly right in what he said. Australia is no longer the lucky country. You’re luckier when you get out of here these days.😊
I agree with what hes saying especially its not our country when the smoke gets bad just go to an area with better air for 2 months rent a long stay hotel room for $ 350 a month i do it every year
Exactly my plan once moving there. Thinking Vietnam is the best place, ocean side, otherwise Indonesia or Philippines (though mostly polluted always in places).
