  • Have a dress or top with shoulder straps that are too long? The other night, I was getting out a dress to wear to an event and realized it had that issue, so I figured out how to alter the garment to fit me better. It was a fairly simple fix and took about an hour from start to finish.
    SUPPLIES:
    Sewing machine - Janome 7700
    Seam ripper
    amzn.to/2Un4DFd
    Pins (I like silk pins)
    amzn.to/2SGvhHC
    Small fabric scissors (Gingher)
    amzn.to/2SJCVks
    Panasonic Cordless 360 Freestyle Iron
    amzn.to/2SKyN3R
    Seam roll is helpful
    amzn.to/2SK4iLs
    Embroidery needles for hand sewing
    amzn.to/2EPwuZt
Coordinating thread (should match your garment to blend in)
Here's how I altered my shoulder strap, which had a facing:
    1) Using a seam ripper, open up both sides of the shoulder seam - 6-8 inches
    2) Turn the shoulder portion of the garment inside out, revealing the stitching and seam allowance (SA)
    3) The seam allowance will likely be pressed open, press it closed and pin to keep fabric in place - there should be two sections - one for the exterior fabric, and another for the lining / facing.
    4) Sew a new line of stitching the desired amount of length you want to reduce - don't forget that the new seam allowance will equal half that (ie: 1/2 inch SA = 1 inch total reduction in shoulder length).
    5) Cut off old SA stitching line, press new SA open gently with iron over seam roll if you have one
    6) Turn shoulder right side out again and tuck raw edges in, then hand sew using a ladder / invisible stitch

Shoulder straps that are too long is one of my most common garment fit issues - what are yours?

Good job Jennifer! I searched this out because I have a beautiful new black, sleeveless with v neck jump suit that needs this same 1" alteration at the shoulders. I have done some sewing in the past, but definitely needed some direction on this project. I was so fearful of messing this up, but your video has helped me a lot! Thank you so much!

I have sewn in some different factories and they all used one-quarter inch seams and they all used the same stitches per inch , I just don't remember what that number was. Thanks, I always enjoy your videos.

Nice job! Love the color of that dress on you. Hope you had a great time at the event. And now I know how to do that too as I have similar fit issues.

This type of alteration has always seemed so complicated but once I tried it, not so bad!

Using this to alter the strap on my one-shoulder bridesmaid dress... the outer fabric is chiffon, so wish me luck! Thanks so much for the help!

How do I shorten a dress but without losing the length.

Hi, I need to shorten my shoulder top but I have a high back so when I try to sew it the back is a different width. Do you know how I can overcome this?

What stitch did you use to resew together?

  • @manishafrancis2052

I’m a bit confused at 1:41….once I open seams from both sides…..do I now…..stitch to shorten then cut excess fabric? Then hand stitch seams from both sides to close?

I'm a little confused by the angle exactly which seam you ripped out. Can someone who has some experience explain?
Looking at my own garment (also a lined dress with very similar straps) it appears I should rip out the seam that connects the "back" part of the strap to the front part. Is that what she did? It looks different than I expected, so thanks for any help!

    • @SewingReport
      @SewingReport  4 ปีที่แล้ว

No, I did not rip that seam. The seam I ripped was the side running parallel to the strap (longer side).
