Having taught over 200 people to sew, I wish I could teach more people. It's such a valuable, basic life skill. It's almost a completely lost skill. It's surprising that so many people have little or zero life skills such as cooking, sewing, laundry stain removal, house cleaning. When I left my parents home at 18, I had not learned any of those. It's all self taught for me. Whilst learning to sew, I had many rubbish bin successes ~ only fit for the rubbish bin! Still, persistence paid off. I taught my 3 daughters & my son all of the life skills they would let me, in the time I had with them. As a result, all 4 know how to sew, cook from scratch, process laundry (stain removal), clean a house, grow their own food, set a proper table, swim, drive a stick shift car. Plus, so much more. A very gratifying aspect? My adult children are teaching their children. There's still hope in my heart. *smile*

@@angelastevenson252 Thank you. There are people of all ages who were never taught life skills. My kiddos didn't realize how important life skills were. In fact, although I did try to make it fun as they learned. Each one, at different times fought me as I was teaching them.
When they went out on their own they were each shocked to see that the people they interacted with didn't know how to cook or sew or change the oil in their car or change a flat tire.
For the cooking part, I had each child choose 3 complete meals to learn to make. I broke it down into steps on index cards.
      Then, something really cool happened.
Once they had learned the 4 complete meals, they started trading with each other. That was not my doing, so, it was a nice surprise. Each one knows how to make 16 complete meals including dessert.
My second daughter is serving in the military. It's a usual thing for military people to banter, tease each other etc. My daughter didn't realize that she had made her next rank. The people in her duty section only posted it that she had made it at 4:30 pm on a Friday after the tailor shop had closed & wouldn't take any more orders to be done on Monday morning. They all got a laugh about it, told her she had better have her new rank sewn on her uniforms on Monday.
      They underestimated her.
She had her own sewing machine, sewed her rank onto her uniform, walked in on Monday, wearing it. The other people in her office were amazed! They were even more amazed that she had sewed her rank on her uniforms, herself.
      I loved it!

@@FreeSpirit47 @Brenda B I also taught my daughter and son how to live skills, and now they teach their friends and co workers. I love that they can teach others. More parents need to learn that kids are very capable, if only you give them a chance to prove it!

    • @FreeSpirit47
      @FreeSpirit47 ปีที่แล้ว

@@angelastevenson252 Love that! I'm happy for you & for your son and daughter.
What it really takes is for parents to either have the life skills themselves or learn them.
It takes time, patience, love & skill to teach children.
Teaching children is best when it's started while they are little, as early as possible. My first child, a daughter, did everything very early. She was crawling at 4 months, walking at 7 months. By the time she was 10 months old, she was walking, talking, answering the phone. I was afraid that she might be progressing too fast.
She hated having a dirty diaper, yet I felt that 9 months of age was too soon to potty train. She was about 10 months of age when I noticed that she didn't soil her diapers very much. Then, I realized that she had been going in the bathroom, climbing up onto the toilet & using it. She potty trained herself!
As soon as my daughter was walking well, I got a stepping stool. Started teaching her to put her dishes & eating utensils in the sink, then, taught her how to properly wash them. When we would go to a family party, she would go around, collecting used paper plates & plastic utensils to put them in the rubbish. If they were the reusables, she took them to the kitchen, put them in the sink & sometimes even washed them.
Other family members were amazed by this! She was barely 2 years of age!
She helped a bit in teaching her siblings as they came along.
It breaks my heart to rarely hear from or see the 3 older kiddos. My youngest is the only one I see or speak with very much. She and I speak on the phone when she calls me every Sunday. We both work toward seeing each other in person twice per year. I love her, cherish her, am grateful for the time with her & her family.

oh my gosh i have done all the things you mentioned. Yes I sewed all those things. I just figured out the broach thing and works good with a sweater coat. But been using the safety pins. So so fun! I want to ruche some dress sides why do the elastic? I love sewing hacks and felt kind of guilty doing some ot the safety pins- whoa I am petite. Wish could get a hack to make a too low at waist jean to high waist. I am short so I am going to do the heming the pants I like that other way because I need all the length I can get lol, so dont want cuff to show. Love easy! I have done many years sewing everything to suits. I moved where no room for all that sewing and craft stuff and having a room for it. I plan to spend my time doing other things so got the broaches- yep i love that. I love the tie the belt in the back I did that idk just came into my mind. Geeze I can get a medium at thrift store in med and tweak it wow I love your channel. So much fun- I have had a lifetime of sewing and spending so much time doing all this for my home, and family- from baby layettes. O my gosh getting other ideas I did not think of. My friend has sniper vision lol so can see any tiny bit of a safety pin. Oh well. Doing the belted backs with robes. Oh my gosh this is just what I needed. Got some long skirts looks jush ehhh. Ohhh rusched! I have a bunch of things I want to rusched. I needed this as I am ready to rusche for first time. I watch a fashion and rusched dress best thing ever. I am going to rushed so many thing and would love to see a high low dress. Or top that goes to high but the low is super long in front. My friend and I are stuck on this dress I love but we took it in too much and so many times last year it is long and sort of fish tail. but it goes in a few pins. We cant get the threads out without thashing the beautiful dress. We just cant figure out how to do this dress it goes in at the empire waist and that has too many threads. Thought of this would probably mean sewing but it was expensive and my fav dress. I dont know how we did this mess it is. We thought of cutting and just getting fabric by going to good will and buying some that goes and we added to the sides of the dress- not our fault this time. It was my size and I ordered and also it was a big stretch in my budget. We are left with that. ugg. It worked with sewing, but not crazy about the fabric chosen. Not all size smalls are the same wow but this was like a 0 truly and no give. I really dont want to do but dont know what else to do with the black dress with white flowers. It is a long length. Got the hat and a Micheal Kors hat that matches and even found a belt if I want to use it that matches all. I tell you this is vexing us! I know will probably have to be done with sewing because too small but trying to get all those rows of stiching out many crossed over IDK what the heck we were doing last year when we did this. I will find a solution I hope. Any way love love love the idea of safety pins going to buy some more, lol and show my friend your channel so she can subscribe too. I always did it the hard way and when moved here I just sold my expensive machine and got one incase I wanted to tweak something- But like NY small apt. I have one place in kitchen for the sewing machine. Wish I had know hack for sweater- had one just like it but as a petite I felt like a sasquach in it. Forgive terrible spelling. In a hurry to get a closet full of things done- yes my goal is to get as far as I can and will figure out some things I love but dont flatter. A high low top ugg the top is too much under arms like a bat wing and has a tie belt I end up putting on a crop tank and that does it, but do I always want to have to wear that crop tank top. No. Petite so many things too big on me. Now that I bought a wardrobe of things I thought right for my body type - I found much is wrong thing. Ugggg!

I got this video as a suggestion “out of the blue” from TH-cam. I don’t do DIYs, I have seen some videos of dressing for petite people, but that is about it. I am sick and my sewing machine is a heck yo get out and find a place for (I dont have any counter place, desk or dining room table, only a extra flap table I most take out for the sewing machine, since I living small), so normally don’t use it. I do some alterations with hand stitching, but here was so many good tips for especially my oversized clothes after drop in weight, with no effect. Thank you so much!

Brilliant. I've done the broach-in-the-back gather technique, but beware that the broach can damage chairs and car seats and also pop off because it's being tugged while you're sitting in the car.

I’m late to the party but I LOVE the broach in the back of oversized shirts and dresses!! I’m in south Florida and it’s already hitting mid 90s (factor in 80% humidity and it reaches about 117 degrees). I’m 5’2 and 100 pounds so I can get lost in a lot of outfits. Total game changer! Thank you! ♥️

Life changing! I’m short so I always have to roll or hem everything and this gave me some new tools. I particularly appreciated the hack to fix too wide of a shoulder because I run into that issue constantly. I love a good puffed sleeve but not if they sit wide. I’ve returned blouses I now wished I’d kept because now I’d know how to fix the problems and make them flattering! Thanks so much for this!💕
