Absolutely terrific tips and tricks I wish I was more brave to get straight (mine look wonky often) looking hand rolled hems without doing a first pass then folding but more practice in my off peak season might have to be part of my new years plan.
Excellent instruction! I am teaching myself how to sew leash wraps for dog leashes - so just a slightly different application :) - but learned so much in this short video. Also, I think my jaw dropped open when you heat sealed the fabric - I would not have thought to do that on a silk!

I’d already worked out the needle/thread swap out, and you taught me about the seam allowance snips before, but that tension tip is life changing!!! I also forgot I could heat seal the snip and that helped a ton too.
If you are making a gown from scratch and you are going for a certain hem look, selecting the correct fabric is absolutely critical, and using incompatible fabric for the desired end result is a SUPER common issue that people reach out to me for. Of course, if you do the other 4 tips, they will help you make a tighter roll no matter the fabric.

Thank you for so many great tips and instructions. I use the two step method to get that tiny rolled hem, because some dresses in silk charmuese, chiffon cut on the bias, circle, or curved, the 2 step method works better for me. I have to practice a bit more on fabrics like chiffon/charmuese/and other soft fabrics to get better with this way of doing the baby hem. For me this method works on stiffer fabrics, like organza and when the fabric is on grain. I definitely need more practice to use this one step method....and I have been sewing for yeeeeeears....never to old to learn something new. Sometimes I get so much curling from the pulling, that it looks terrible. Only if the fabric is on the straight grain, for me, does this work. Guess I just need to practice more. On that rolled hem foot, you are right HATE THEM, always something out of wack and you wind up taking stitches out redoing sections. It's just soooooo annoying. However there are some skilled seamstresses. I once used an excellent sample making service and watched one the sewers hem my bias cut silk charmuese gown using that foot. No digs, no wobbles....I was in complete awe. Thank you for keeping it real, with your helpful sewing tips....continued success.

What about your tension tip when sewing a circle skirt hem? There are points when you get to bias fabric and I tend to get a lettuce effect (undesireable)

Do you have advice for doing a narrow rolled hem on the light jersey lining that's used in so many bridesmaid dresses? I'm considering using a very light weight stabilizer tape. Thank you for sharing so much knowledge with us!
You could do a two-step roll, or try the banroll technique. I prefer to hand roll knits, but I do stretch them as I sew and then press the stretch out of them.
Thank you so much! I was very nervous but I made a two step baby hem, pressing up before cutting, then cutting away the extra inches. It worked beautifully (without stabilizer or a walking foot) using just my left zipper foot and a lot of patience. ;)@@BridalSewing

Is it possible to do a tutorial on making a small rolled hem on a curved, chiffon skirt? Many prom and mother of the bride gowns have a over skirt of chiffon and it's a misery to hem...Most examples showing rolled hems use a scrap of straight grain fabric...that doesn't give confidence when a maker is faced with a drooped curved chiffon skirt.

She's meaning when you hem a gown with a train and you are only shortening the front, how to transition from the original rolled hem edge into the new hem edge without a wobble.
You don’t show the process for working a hem-edge that is in the bias …. As most formal, ball gowns have a considerable width of hem on the bias…. I strongly recommend sewing at a slow pace to avoid the ‘puckers
@@BridalSewing the issue isn’t simply ‘seeing on a bias’ … on most ball how’s, the hem is a combination of straight grain & bias.. this takes gentle coaxing, basting & patience
I promise you, I go into great detail about that in my rolled hem videos. I specifically talk about how it goes in & out of bias/grain while sewing a circle skirt hem. But changing the fabric isn't always an option. Do these tips work on the other fabric?

Straight hems on grain are much easier than curved hems on circular skirts where portions are on the bias. Like to see a video on that.

I'd try it both ways, honestly! Everyone is different & fine motor skills vary so much.
I do the two step fold. If you have the tiniest sharp scissors you can cut close with out cutting thru first stitches
