I loved her crazy side, but wish they had just let her train Zaraki without her dying. She would’ve been a bigger help against the sternritter in my opinion with her battle and healing skills. Mayuri had to invent those healing pods to replace her.

Ah yeah, Unohana healing on Bankai Zaraki would of been EPIC. Truly a Power couple, I just wanted Zaraki to have a demon child with Unohana but I guess Kubo probably thought their hell spawns would each be a world ending threat... but I can dream.
one thing i loved about Unohana was how Kubo constantly dropped hints that she was way more than she seemed and I think it's kind of poetic in hindsight that Zaraki nicknamed his zanpakuto after her. I really hope the new anime will dedicate at least an entire episode to the fight between the kenpachis

Kenpachi isnt a name it means something along the lines of "The most fierce fighter" or something.....She was the strongest fighter before Zaraki showed up

She had the darkest past being essentially a mass murdering serial killer. Her moving on from that life by saving others regardless of who they are was her redemption, but then being sacrificed to train Zaraki was a tragedy. In a way it was a transformative moment of Gotei 13, representing things getting serious but also how things will change forever.
i truly agree with your point about this transformative moment for Gotei 13. Plus I feel like the set of this fight being the lowest of the prison also illustrate how she may have wanted to die here as being who she was, a mass murderer. It adds a real tragic accent to think that by having to revert to the very reason for her redemption she needed to atone once agan for the horrors she did by dying...
@@RedRobespierre9 That sounds in line with her character and I agree. In a way it can be said that she possibly saved far more lives than she took during that dark time. Still imagine how many more could've been spared just as Soul Society needed it the most.

Indeed. But imagine if she use her reasons to fight for Gotei herself! She would be able to train Zaraki and fight alongside him as well with her healing powers! Imagine if she’s out there confronting those kiddos sternritter. They would’ve been wiped out easily! Even Askin or Bazz-B or others.
I like the idea that, in a way, unohana was addicted to violence and bloodshed to the point that if she intervened in any conflict it would have a negative impact. So like an addict would, she avoids her vice at all costs because once she gets into fighting she fears she will not be able to stop.
So basically she’s the sweet mother that you find out she used to be in a Biker gang.

I actually would love if kubo just decided to make more content for the anime including with unohana because we didn't get nearly enough for her character. I'm not talking about filler, I'm saying cannon shit with more story about the characters and extended fights because in the end the last arc was rushed
Amazing what a change in facial expression, hairstyle, and lighting can do when handled by a great artist.
40 minutes on Yachiru/Retsu. I’m in. Her eyes in the manga in the Kenpachi fight, she just looks amazing in that fight. After TYBW it makes more sense as to why she confronted Aizen and Gin in the beginning by herself and wasn’t afraid. She totally should have jumped in after Yama fell to Aizen, agreed.
she could not jump in she was under the effects of ks and prob was afraid she would body her allies that why she told ichigo he was the only one that can stop aizen
@@ksmikari1045 that didn’t stop all the rest of Gotei from fighting Aizen, they were under Kyoka Suigetsu as well so that isn’t a valid reason. Maybe Yama told her to stay out of that fight too, that would make the most sense.
@@ksmikari1045 I think its mostly because she knows she can't do much since she was still under aizen's zanpakuto's influence and second because it is her duty to be the medic for the gotei forces there
Only Yama attack Ennetsu Jigoku is the last resort thing that can kill Aizen as it is a great range attack and it requires considerable amount of time to unleashed. Even Aizen is powerful, he needs to be in the vicinity to make sure Kyokasuigetsu on effect. Unohana has no such attack.
@@daisuke910 I get that she can’t beat him but at that point when Aizen takes out the whole Gotei and the Vizards and goes to the real Karakura, if the soul king dies their isn’t gonna be any healing to be done. Do we ever find out if zero division is under Kyoka Suigetsu? I don’t see how Ichibe could’ve still been around to see Aizen release. Maybe she knows that and thought they would take care of him so she should just heal.
I've always thought Yama deliberately wanted Unohana away from battle so there was no chance that Yachiru resurfaced. Thinking of her more as a friend than as a commander I dont think he wanted that for her.

I think we're supposed to believe that she was indeed busy healing. I get the impression that she had taken a vow of pacifism. And was only willing to break that vow to appoint a new Kenpachi.
Totally! But I just love the idea of Unohana being out in the field @ some point in the last 1000 years & having to get serious in a fight! I would die for even just a short story bout that.
Also she knows that fight Aizen was useless being on Kyoka Suigetsu effect. She believed only Ichigo could do it
The issue being her advantage over Aizen is her superior sword skills. Which are rendered useless by Aizen's shjkai. In a straight fight? She's wreck him for sure, but Aizen would never just give her a straight fight for that reason. That being said its pretty obvious Aizen didn't think she'd go down easily so wasn't worth trying to unless he had to.
@@shadenox8164 Unohana has supperior sword and healing skills + almost as good as Aizen's spell skills. She is the complete package of having mastered most forms of combat/healing, which is stupid OP because she can heal herself from fatal wounds as much as she wants.

The fact that she was the Captain of the 4th division (the number 4 is Often feared because of it's association with Death) was a clue from the Start.
She always was one of my favorites
Number 4 is the devils number in Japanese culture, hence why Ulquiorra is also number 4 and why Mista from jojos skips the number 4
Unohana has been my favorite Bleach character since it started and I was absolutely horrified with the direction they took her. I have no problem with her formal identity, my problem is her being used essentially as a tool to prop up Zaraki Kenpachi. Zaraki who has had numerous fights up to that point gets a power up by killing someone who's never even had a fight before. I don't even mind her dying, but she didnt even get to fight a single antagonist and essentially died in a glorified training session, where it was already predetermined that she would be a sacrificial goat... I absolutely hate the way they took her character. It still pisses me off 10 years later

Yeah straight up considering the combat prowess she has the entire concept of that battle is completely idiotic considering where they were in the strongest like what general in their right mind has two of their best fighters have a death match during a period of invasion
You left out the fact that Kenpachi knew how powerful she was that he went to her without his eyepatch! And she noted it.
Shame that we saw her character development right before she died... She was one of the strongest Captains and people in whole Bleach universe. First Kenpachi... Rest in peace.

Yeah. Kubo rushed it and screwed it up. I think he intended to do more but shonen said no we need to promote other garbage anime instead. Also I think he had other plans for squad zero cause that was just pathetic. It wasn’t even that it was bad, it just literally left plot holes and disappointment.

Kubo unintentionally created a loyal fan base for Unohana, they have to bring her back to life or something....she looks like a kijo, ancient japanese demon. Just classic japanese art style, The lifeless bloodlust look, the hair down, the foreshadowing along with the backstory, sheesh. What a character development, i think it would be stupid to just let that go.
I think a powerful shinigami should find her zanpakto and master the bankai abilities and have it tied in with unohana back story

She would be a terrifying foe in the Hell Arc, that's for sure. Also, I feel there might be some similarities between her and Kazui because something about that boy feels off.
Kubo claimed in interviews that he had the truth about Unohana being the 1st Kenpachi planned out from the beginning and honestly I believe him. If you look back at the Karaburi+, her combat stats were on the same level as Yamamoto and her special skill was listed as Kendo.
Kuruyashiki was the 7th Kenpachi and Azashiro was the 8th. After Azashiro was imprisoned in Muken, his Vice-Captain was promoted and became the 9th Kenpachi; he's the one who Love insulted for getting killed by Kiganjo. Presumably when Unohana transerred to the 4th Division a similar thing happened and her old Vice-Captain became the 2nd Kenpachi. The entire reason behind their fight is that Unohana never officially lost the Kenpachi title to begin with so the following 10 were not real Kenpachi, and Zaraki only becomes one after killing Unohana.
Unohana was always my favourite
It was a waste to kill her off to Zaraki. We had alot of Zaraki and Byakuya in the series, the TYBW should've focused on them old captains etc. We didn't see Ukitake fight, we didn't see Ishin and Ryokuken fight, and we got more of Byakuya and Zaraki which I believe Byakuya should've stayed dead.
Retsu was suppose to go berserk after Yamaji dies. And knowing how powerful she is, she should've be given a fight with the elite stern Ritter, especially with that bankai. Seeing her take Jugo would be epic actually.
I think the whole point of the decision is Soul Society needed one bared blade rather than two sheathed ones during its crisis.
Unohana and Zaraki both CANNOT hold the title of Kenpachi, only one of them. Even Shunsui commented that "....if they crossed blades, one has to die."
Zaraki is stronger then Unohana, but due to his mental blocks since meeting Unohana, he grew weaker, and she felt responsible for that.
But then again... We'll be seeing her in Hell soon. Which is much more exciting
Naw we need byakuya for the revelations on the noble families. He’s a head of a noble family and the soul king. I think his character can be more fleshed out regarding his family past.

I always liked the idea that Unohana never handed the title of Kenpachi to anybody, she just stopped defending it and eventually someone else claimed the title and that was the second Kenpachi and it continued from there
I know Yama had forbidden Squad 4 from joining the fight, but man! Unohana slicing the Quincies is a battle I would pay to watch!
Yama cared more about Soul Society as a whole, then he did giving the readers something yum.

Yeah. Surely they're not just bringing the anime back strictly for the manga content. We might get flashbacks at times involving the original gotei, Sasakibe's bankai, etc. Perhaps even the original Yama vs Yhwach fight.

She got done so dirty in TYBW. Would have loved to see her and Zaraki fight side by side instead of her just being fodder for another Zaraki power boost, although the power boost was interesting.

Narratively it doesn't make sense to kill likely the 2nd strongest after Kenpachi fully awakens & Yama is dead not including Ichibe ofc he's closer to a God than shigigami too

I think based on the data books (i.e her chest scar), Unohana's concept was the earliest fleshed out, but Kubo wasn't able to fit the reveal/scrapped the original plans for it and brought it back with the 1000 yr Blood War.
There were good reasons as to not have her fight, i.e her bankai potentially killing everyone in the vicinity a la Zanka no tachi, or that her Retsu personality is like a can of worms where like Kenpachi's bankai it puts her in a berserker-like state, or that as leader of the medical division and she is the last line of support of soul society/seireitei and her station is too important to risk.
Unohana is my favorite female character next to Soi-Fon. If there was one thing that didn’t sit well with me, was her being killed off after helping Kenpachi unlocking his Zanpakuto. I know a few people might not agree with me, but I wish that Unohana lived and see her in action to show us fans how OP she is.
I agree.. zaraki could have gone with ichigo/renji etc to the oul king palace for his zanpakuto. So unohana doesnt have to be killed off so we can see her in action

always wondered how differently the TYBW would've played out if, instead of being sacrificed for the sake of training zaraki, yachiru unohana fought alongside zaraki in the war.
I want to know who all of the original gotei 13 captians were.
I think Shunsui's older brother was one of them.
We know that he was a shinigami from noble family.
We know that Shunsui and Ukitake were the first to become captains through shinigami academy.
Shinigami academy was created after gotei13, so the original captains (including Unohana) were most likely just picked by Yama, based on their ability to kick ass.
Obviously he is much older than Shunsui and it's safe to assume that he probably became shinigami before his younger brother.
I kinda like the theory based on the silhouettes, that said Komamura's ancestor (the massive dog he did the immortality ritual with) was one of them. It would explain why he's in animal form - he used the ritual himself a long time ago

I wonder if Isane knew about this side of Retsu. And I’d love to know more about Isane’s feelings after reading the letter. Did she think Retsu’s kind personality was just a coverup? Was her relationship with Isane just an accessory to the coverup?
I know their mother/daughter dynamic was probably genuine but Retsu is a master actress, so we’ll never really know for sure.
In my mind she didn't truly know about Yachiru Unohana. She may have heard stories or read somewhere about her & the original Gotei 13, but there's knowing and then there's KNOWING, y'know? Lol. Not that that makes her's and Retsu Unohana's relationship any less valid, or real, I just think that it was built on a character/role that Unohana had to play out of necessity. I've read some other comments saying that she devoted herself to being the healer down to the last moment before she truly passed on the title of "Kenpachi." & I really like that idea. So the Unohana that the lieutenant (now captain) knew, although very real and compassionate in her way, was just a warrior fulfilling their duty/destiny. Love to see it
well with some of the gags and stuff I think isane knew Restu had a dark side but chose not to reveal it instead being a healer since it was mentioned often that she is one of the oldest captains there only behind old man yama
@@birky0191 I learned some new info since I left my original comment. Tite Kubo himself said Isane knew about Retsu’s past life, and she’s the only one who sees Retsu with her hair down(aside from kenpach).
And their relationship is 100% genuine. My suspicions have been proven false.

Honestly, man. You made me fall in love with Bleach all over again. I'm re-reading the manga in order to buy CFYOW.
This analysis was great, and also the one of Kyouraku's bankai (my fav character btw).
Keep it going, there's still so much to unravel in Kubo's work and we still have BTW coming our way anytime now.

I felt that when ever I saw her, I had a feeling that there was something bubbling underneath. There are plenty of lines that she says so sweet, but seem to be hard or demanding or sinister. She would always say sinister things with a smile on her face which made her scary, like she did when told squad 11 to calm down. You just knew something else was there. Like you mention when she and Ichigo are running on the light and she says maybe I should go first, Ichigo says no I can do it, then he looks at her face when she says it again, Ichigo's reaction was one of terror. And this is after she realize how power he really was. I really liked this character and I can't wait to see this battle.

So my take as far as the Kenpachi title goes: The 11th Division was setup as a way to pass on the title. When Unohana retired, whoever took her spot just became a defacto 2nd and it continued on. However, technically, Zaraki would be the true 2nd Kenpachi, the actual inheritor since Unohana was never actually defeated until then.
Seems like it. Nobody actually killed her at all until then, let alone in one of those 11th division captain death battles...I know there are a couple of insanely OP ones from the novels, but in general, it doesn't feel like the majority were up to the same standard as Yachiru and Zaraki. They seemed more comparable to the Zaraki with the bells on. That led us to such an underestimation of the strength someone has if they deserved the title
If I remember correctly the 2nd Kenpachi which is Shūjo that is taller than Zaraki was still alive and was locked down in maggot nest
She stepped down after she was disappointed that she was too weak so that Zaraki restrained himself to kill her because he was afraid of losing her. She was parcifistic after that because she only has passion in fighting Zaraki
She is really not a confusing character. Just because she has all this strength, it is her restraint that makes her strong in my eyes.
i actually liked that unohana fought once and only once against kenpachi to make him "complete". i think her time of bloodshed ended long ago and she wanted to become a healer to make some amends for her past. she didn't want to kill anymore and so she didn't (it's also why yamamoto commanded she stay inside during the quincy invasion). she only fought kenpachi so that he would be able to remove that final block and truly be able to take on the mantle as the true kenpachi thus ending a need for her.....her storyline had reached a logical and i think fitting conclusion.
I didn't mind what Kubo did with her, I just wish we got more flashback to fill that history of her up
The only thing that bothered me is I really couldn't follow why exactly she had die.
I really wanted the Tank/Healer Heavy Medic combo with the two of them together. It would've been an interesting and unorthodox team
Zaraki subconsciously restraining himself because of his history with Unohana, and the fact that he could never bring himself to let loose fully, meant that she had to die in order for him to *truly* become "Kenpachi". That big mental weakness that he can't overcome alone is part of his childlike mentality.

Especially how Unohana basically has no fights and just heals everyone the whole series and then when we finally get characterization its in the FINAL ARC and she immidiately dies afterwards. I know people say she HAD to die for Kenpachi to progress but I feel like that’s just bad writing on Kubo’s part because he wrote this “limitation” of Kenpachi not being able to go all out in at the very last possible arc

her character was enjoyable before the TYBW arc. The fact that she had this instilled fear in everyone just existing with that mom Authority aura was hilarious. Her introduced back story of being a villain and a thug made it even more enjoyable. Love the extensive details you out into explaining her history. 🙏🙏👏👏👏
Watching this video made me come up with a possible idea for why Unohana was never in a fight prior to her sparring with Zaraki: Because once she starts it would be very difficult to make her stop. She'd use her healing powers to keep the battle going indefinitely without ever actually killing her opponent. She'd be caught up fighting this one foe in a veeeeery drawn-out battle and nothing else. She would, in a sense, be little more than a very grim and gory distraction to keep an enemy or two occupied. That's not really what you really want from a captain fighting on the frontlines.

IDK, I never would have made the leap that she was the first Kenpachi but like it was mentioned in the example where she terrified the members of the 11th division among others I always had the sense that she would eventually appear as the closet menace.

I remember I was shocked when I found out who Unohana truly was since I always though her as this motherly kind character who healed anyone without question and kept them safe.
I always took it as she stepped down from being kenpachi/captain of that division when she lost to kid zaraki, and she then became a healer, as she saw that zaraki was already starting to get disappointed. She realized she no longer deserved the title. So I assumed her number 2/new captain took up the title

My head cannon is that Unohana took a vow of absolute pacifisim, concentrating on healing. And she knew if she fell back into the addictveness of violence she wouldn't be able to stop herself.
Isane being her ward is where I thought he would take her story arc. Explain how Unohana came across Isane, and here is my thoughts on it:
headcanon: Unohana killed Isane's Sole parent during one of her murder sprees. Seeing the child in tears, Unohana released her darker side, effectively killing her old self in that moment, and changing her own name to really solidify the transition to a new path of healing and nurturing. All of this because of her relationship with Isane.

Think of it like this, without Unohana's sacrifice Zaraki wouldn't have gained the power to stop Gremmy whose meteor would've killed all the shinigami and mostly everything else in the Seireitei and beyond.🤷🏾♂️

@@bqw2094 I agree that Kubo didn't have to kill off Unohana but Zaraki was the only shinigami that could've beaten Gremmy because no other shinigami had Zaraki's endurance and nobody else would've survived Gremmy's meteor or his space trap. Only Zaraki has the ability to cut thru anything, even intangibility which saved him from outer space!
One could say that the reason why she remained neutral for all the fights (besides being a healer and a holder of law) is that her desire to fight couldn't be quenched by anyone but Kenpachi.

One of the things I could never understand is why they didn’t make her head commanders after Yamamoto’s death. She would have been so much better for the story and I still think there was no reason for her to die to train Z
I think it was unnecessary to kill her off to Kenpachi. Kubo could've had her and Kenpachi go and wreck the Quincy army and causing all kinds of chaos. Then if you wanted to kill her off I would do it after a fight with a top tier Quincy and when witnessing her death Kenpachi in a rage goes Bankai for the first time
It gives more meaning. Life is meaningful only because there is death.
It has to be like that because Zaraki could only be the real Kenpachi if he kills the previous one
Could you maybe argue that Yama kept her safe as to keep as many people alive after the battle as possible, and then once they have enough intel on the Quincy, Kyoraku wanted to increase their offensive power as much as possible for what would probably be the last stand? Or maybe that was the entire plan all along from Yama as well, who knows.

Perfect analysis and extremely detailed. I’m sure this is probably already somewhere in the comments section but if the healer is injured or dies the war/battle Is truly over. I always thought in hindsight after the reveal of her hidden past she devoted herself to heal so her conviction became even stronger when she would truly relinquish her title to zaraki. I think Kubo had it planned but the sequencing was unclear which is prevalent throughout bleach.
I love how Kubo drawled her as well he did a fantastic job conveying her emotions through her facial expressions.
Well it is her fault that he placed all those seals on his power. I think she was written very well from the beginning to the end even if she didn't have a big role in some of the arcs but you can't really give someone that Limelight like you do with the center star mainly Ichigo. So it is only natural that everybody else's screen time would be cut to something manageable.
I remember a clip from the live bleach rock festival (before TYBW manga) where Unohana and Zaraki had an interaction while being healed by her after Ichigo's fight. They were conversing about power and Unohana flat-out called him weak.

Her transformation easily made her one of my favourite captains. I used to love her dark glimmers in the anime and when I heard about her fight with Kenpachi and just how strong and evil she can be I was sold
Regarding the fight between the only two real Kenpachis (the first and the last) - this is what it looks like when monsters make love.
I mean to be fair, wasn't there another Kenpachi who was a monster in his own right? Got sealed in Muken and is immune to the effects of kyokasuigetsu? He just doesn't fight like Unohana and Kenpachi is all
@@rev0568 Oh, Sōya Azashiro, the 8th Kenpachi from Bleach: Spirits Are Forever With You had an absolutely insidiously powerful bankai that was always active. He was the primary antagonist in the light novel. Indeed the 7th Kenpachi, Kuruyashiki, also had a bankai so dangerous that he was forbidden to use it within Seireitei. Presumably all the Captains of the 11th division would have been overpoweringly dangerous relative to most other Shinigami (even Kiganjō, who got one-shotted by Zaraki). But the 2nd-10th Captains of Squad 11 were essentially place-holders: called Kenpachi without truly deserving the name. Yachiru Unohana may have renounced her duties but she couldn't renounce her strength and she remained the true Kenpachi right up until Zaraki killed her. She relinquished her position out of shame and guilt nearly a millenium ago because she knew there was a boy at the outer edge of soul society who was stronger than her and the only reason she was still alive after fighting him then was because he saw her fear of dying (for the first time in her life) and he gave her the opportunity to heal herself so the fight could go on.

I think the reason alot of ppl think unohana and kenpachi have romantic tension specifically is because their both kenpachi and by the inherent nature of the title "kenpachi" the thrill of battle is almost sexual in nature. Which is consistent with what you said about them being the only ones that can satisfy eachothers lust for battle. Theres a reason the term lust is used to describe battle instead of greed or desire in most cases. So i think kubo brilliantly displayed this thematically with the percieved underlying sexual tension that is only sexual within the context of a kenpachi and is not in fact actually romantic in any way. Its like 2 lovers that have been repressed their whole lives finally achieving climax simultaneously. Beautiful.
What I loved was the foreshadowing; Kubo hinted this as far back as the Soul Society Arc; her battle data has her offense being at her best, she is able to make Squad 11, a group of violent thugs quiver in fear at her presence, make even Aizen a master manipulator be cautious of her, make Zaraki a blood knight respect/fear her, and has two senior captain's Shunsui and Ukitake fear her. Then when you find out who she once was, then everything starts to make sense

By the way, her name in kanji (烈 retsu) is a major red flag. That kanji means agression, violence, brutality, which doesnt really fit with the Unohana Retsu we know at the beginning of the story. Now that I see some names in kanji, its so interesting how they sometimes have some hidden meanings. But this is not hidden at all :D
Fun fact: Unohana (卯ノ花) means "flower of the rabbit" which is cute :) Also a very interesting contrast with her given name

If Kubo did plan Unohana's character back in the Huenco Mundo, a reason why she didn't participate was probably that she was saving her last/only fight exclusively only with Kenpachi. Would also explain why she didn't plan to live after her bout with Kenpachi.

He absolutely did plan it, she's probably the most planned aspect of Bleach, at least after the Agent of the Shinigami Arc.
One thing I will say Tommo, is that you're vastly underestimating the impact of healer characters in general. I mean, how is single handedly healing half the characters on the show in multiple arcs considered nothing?
My problem with Unohana's backstory is that it's so subtle at hinting. What a Jeckyl and Hyde change. If She was as dangerous and as great of a fighter that she's implied to be, from a story telling perspective Kubo should have shown us and not just told us this information last minute in a couple of chapters. She should have been included in more fights so we could get a peak. It was a seemingly shocking reveal, but it was executed poorly, which is a shame because I enjoyed the character.
So much was overlooked while reading this. Really need re-read this manga. The captain commanders just had different leadership styles.
