      @@Rintow207 Well that's because it's a proper noun, it's the name of the katana.
      Also, personally I think it sounds lamer to translate the techniques to English because it rolls off the tongue harder. They tried to do that for the "official" subs for Bleach that came after the Dattebayo fan subs shut down (around the final Ulquiorra fight), where Getsuga Tensho was called the full "Heavenly Shocking Lunar Fang", so Ulquiorra was like "Show me your Heavenly Shocking Lunar Fang at full power" over and over and it was so weird. Like, we don't call the Kamehameha the "Turtle Wave", it completely takes away the point of the name of ending with "Ha!", that Toriyama wanted to go for.
      You should research some translations for the Zanpakuto names, like Daiguren Hyorimaru or Kokujo Tengen Myou, they're more mouthfuls than the japanese name XD

He's not seeking recognition after all, so what purpose would trying to get his job back serve? But in turn, then he'd be around to help do something in the final arc or at least see him be challenged further in his beliefs [particularly w/ X-cution & the Quincy].
      Either way it's truly a shame that he just got left for dead whilst Orihime later went and saved who were, at the time, essentially random Arrancar enemies by comparison.

    I think Gin's timing was perfect because although Aizen was more powerful once he began to fuse with the Hokyoku, that level of power also upped his arrogance quite a bit. Aizen is willing to use Kyoka Suigetsu actively while he was a captain, and he was extremely cautious. We saw that with him having barriers around his neck to block attacks in case someone went for it. Once he evolved though he not only stopped using his Shikai, but he just stopped being as catious. When Gin touches Aizen's blade, Aizen doesn't think anything of it because of how casual it was, but also because Gin stepped in to kill Ichigo's friends for him. And his arrogance didn't make him think that at this point Gin, who has served him for decades, and flat out murdered the person Aizen though was special to him, would even attempt to kill a god. That's why Aizen's face was so shocked (the most shock we've seen on his face up to that point), but also why Aizen brutalizes him after. Aizen flat out admits to Gin that he was fearful, but I also think he was angry, because Gin was his most trusted ally, and he ended up loosing him.

    • @thetoptier700
      @thetoptier700 4 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      @Scrota, Sack of Oryx Aizen did always have the belief that Gin would betray him, but at that point Aizen was so powerful he could cause others to fade from existence. He never believed a mere Soul Reaper could harm him, let alone almost kill him. The look on Aizen's face shows that he never expected Gin to strike now, or at the very least he never expected Gin to actually hurt him. Either way, his arrogance got the better of him. And even Aizen's distrust with Gin didn't remove the fact that Gin was not only the person who knew him best, but that Gin was the only one of his allies left. Manipulation and distrust aside, one of Aizen's biggest character traits is that he's lonely. So when he strikes down Gin, he solidifies in the physical sense that no one is near him anymore.

    • @cameronjones9092
      @cameronjones9092 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      @Scrota, Sack of Oryx personally i disagree that Aizen beleived Gin actually planned to kill him, I think that quote was merely Aizen trying to justify to himself how his most trusted ally was able to deceive him so easily. Just focus on how Kubo writes Aizen's actions not what Aizen is saying.

    • @cameronjones9092
      @cameronjones9092 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @Scrota, Sack of Oryx i know what he said and I know he didnt fully trust Gin but i still dont think Aizen beleived Gin was going to betray him, maybe thought he would in a gut feeling kinda of way but he didnt know for certain and in all likelihood didnt want Gin to. Gin and Aizen are very similar individuals and Aizen would have caught on to this. Its why Aizen trained Gin and made him his right hand man but that also why he couldnt fully trust him, because Aizen knew himself aswell.

I guess im trying to say that Aizen was paranoid that Gin might try to kill him and that is what kept him on edge. I dont think he knew with 100% certainty and like I said Aizen never wanted Gin to betray him. Plus you could argue that Aizen organized his whole career on his belief in "fear and evolution", for if Soul Society discovered his evil actions he would have been executed, thus forcing Aizen to be more careful and thourough in the pursuit of his ambitions

    One thing not a whole lot of people talk about is how symbolic Gin's true bankai ability is. After he betrays Aizen, he reveals that his bankai's true ability is it's dust poison, and Rangiku's shikai itself revolves around dust and ash. Pretty sure from a writing standpoint, the only reason Gin's bankai even relates to dust in that way, and why he hid the ability, was to represent the way he also hid where his true loyalty lied: Rangiku.

Considering base Aizen was already strong enough to no sell Soi Fon's shikai, which itself is supposed to be a 2 hit instant kill, and casually tank the Hado 96 that cost Yamamoto his arm, and also easily tank (Post Waco Mundo) Ichigo's strongest surprise attack Getsuga Tensho, makes Gin's attack seem that much more ridiculously overpowered.

    I think you may have Gin wrong. Gin didn't try to kill Aizen earlier because he wasn't sure what would work. He had to find out Aizen's plot, get stronger, gain his trust, and see Aizen's strength compared to the Gotei. When he cut Hyori in half he could've actually killed her by destroying her soul sleep and chain, but he just made it look like he tried. We know shinigami can be cut in half and survive. The only shinigami we actually see Gin killed was one loyal to Aizen. Gin was definitely just playing the long game and he finally saw that Aizen let his guard down when he was fighting Isshin, Yoruichi, and Urahara. I think he was a really selfless person but he played the part of a villain in order to keep Aizen from being too suspicious of him (though it didn't work) and to keep Soul Society from suspecting Aizen at first. If Gin was truly just a lawless person Aizen wouldn't have suspected his betrayal because, like Tosen, he would just been what he appears to be and there would be no motive to kill Aizen.

    I see Gin as someone might see a double agent DEEP in infiltration. In order to complete the mission and prevent FAR more horrific things and outcomes, you have to live and breath evil until the moment is right.
    The reason Gin didn't attempt to assasinate Aizen before that moment is simple. Aizen is always 3 steps ahead and aizen knows that he knows about his weakness. For all Gin knows, every time he see's aizen let his guard down or place his sword with in Gin's reach, it could be an illusion, a fatal test for Gin.
    BUT it was at that moment that Gin knew Aizen had built Ichigo up over years to be his sparing partner. Gin knew Aizen was so proud and captivated by his own acomplishments and power that if his sword was exposed in battle with Ichigo, THAT was the moment to strike.

    One thing that always struck me about gin, was the moment you mentioned towards the end of the video where aizen and gin are observing the fight in the fake city.
    Where aizen asks why he is just watching, and gin replies “i just have not found the right moment to strike.”
    I think this line was gin saying directly to aizen in the most back handed way he wanted to kill him, and was waiting for the right moment to literally stab him in the back.
    One of the more subtle but great story beats gin had in the entire series!

    Always appreciated Gin as one of the best Bleach characters. Didn’t need any power up like Tosen (Aizen too interestingly) did during fake Karakura town. Extremely powerful, pretty ruthless in his long con, and a very interesting development of his character/zanpakuto. His power level is often slept on, but even in the initial data books, he was completely balanced in all power, being exceptional. We still have a lot of questions to ask about him, despite most of it being alluded to. Also, bai bai ^^! Who couldn’t like the guy.

    Gin took that long to kill Aizen because he wanted to retrieve what Aizen took from Rangiku. That's probably why he took the Hogyoku to try to give it that part back to her. Also he had the chance there because Aizen had dropped his guard completely at that point for the first time probably in all those hundreds of years they know each other.

  • @cloudali892

    Gin is my favorite Bleach character, even though he doesn't have much screen time he always had most Bleach fans looking closely trying to figure him out, he had a really good relationship with Rangiku that could be interpreted as platonic or romantic but without knowing the nature of their relationship that's still made them have a nice dynamic even with their zanpakuto having powers of ash and dust.

    • @SGKestrel
      @SGKestrel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Their relationship was to me clearly always meant to be one of romance, although unfulfilled. From the day Rangiku had part of her soul stolen, Gin dedicated his life to get it back, by all means necessary, even if it would mean that he could not remain at her side, thats how much she meant to him. He did not want to save the Soul Society, he had no lofty goals to do what he did, it was all for her.
      Thats more than platonic love in my mind.
      Its probably the saddest story in the entirety of the Bleach-series.

    The fact that Aizen just stands there and lets Gin touch his sword and just do nothing as Gin attempts to kill him, and immediately is angry that Gin betrayed him, shows that Aizen, to some degree, had a level of trust in Gin. If he really didn't, he would've killed him in the Fake Kurakara town when he basically laments that he needs nothing. Of course, after his transformation he rambles on about needing Gin to make him transform, and yada yada yada, but I think it's Aizen trying to rationalize his trust in Gin. Aizen didn't even know he could survive until after it happened, so he's clearly lying about using Gin to become more powerful.

    I always had a doubt about how Gin's Shikai works because of a manga panel in the Soul Society Arc when Gin is supposed to stab Rukia but ends up stabbing Byakuya. Kubo kinda draws his sword retracting in a snake like manner, not just coming back straight, but kinda bending almost like a whip. This was very early so my doubt is: was kubo planning more for Gin's sword and over the time abandoned this idea and sticked with just the extended aspect of his sword or this panel was drawn just as a visual representation of Gin's personality as a snake, not relating with the actual ability of the Zanpakuto but more of a metaphorical art aproach on his abilities despite we never see this again in both manga and anime? What do you think about this? I think you know which manga panel I'm talking about!
    Again, great video and great content as always! Keep up! :D

    This is something not many people really touch upon, but I think I remember Izuru explaining to the eagle Arrancar that his squad's motivation isn't to fight because they enjoy fighting or to get stronger, but because they have to and they feel as though they have no other option. I think that encapsulates Gin's motivations perfectly as he despised Aizen yet he followed him around and did his bidding for ~110 years, committing countless horrors in the process, all while waiting for the perfect time to strike.
    I think it should also be noted that Gin liked to toy with his "prey" more often than not, always having a sarcastic remark or response to catch his opponents off guard, no matter who they may be. That's probably why it took him so long to attempt to kill Aizen, because not only did he want to end his life, he wanted to completely destroy and humiliate him. But that's just my take on it, I'm curious as to what other people think

I believe Gin was a very morally grey Being that had no qualms taking a villainously cold, unreadable & convincing right hand man existence.. if it meant killing Aizen 1 day + getting back what he stole from Rangiku's soul. the sheer will & conviction, genius too, to play the part & go down this life, for a mfer you hated his guts since you were a little boy b/c how he did Rangiku, is something just about most other shingamis wouldn't be willing to do.. let alone pull off. his poem to Rangiku sums this up too, Gin was well aware of this!

    To start off I really enjoy your videos. I wantes to give my opinion on Gins Motives. To me after everything was revealed I strongly believe everything he has done was to protect and avenge ranginku. I beilieve he was a very critical thinker and carefully waited for the chance to strike. He was aware how formidable Aizen was i think he was just playing the part to ensure his plans were not revealed especially to Aizen. I also think he is a sociopath except when it comes to ranginku. I do think he was trying for her but do believe he has no regard fir anyone else. It is possible that the reason he never struck sooner was knowing the reprocussions of killing a captain. No one else aside from tosen knew what he was doing and would condemn him. Also I can't see Aizen being completely oblivious and having some sort of contingency plan. Its possible Aizen suspected Gin and kept an eye on him making it difficult to find an opening.

    Wow, this is so sad. I just realized that the few characters who could relate with Aizen's plight are in such perilous states of existence. Kind of speaks for Aizen too. Gin, a prodigy, casts himself into a tragic fate to take out Aizen, but if he'd truly reached out and honestly befriended Aizen (assuming he was anywhere near his level of raw strength, which I doubt heavily) then the Hōgyoku thing would've fallen through. He probably could've gotten everything fixed and sorted out too. And Starrk, whose power was so overwhelmingly high for the hollows of Hueco Mundo that Hollows would die for a huge radius around them, was so powerful that they were cast into a similar loneliness to Aizen's. I'm mad he wasn't just the least bit angered or saddened by Starrk's dispatchment.

    I feel like Gin was definitely under the effect of Kyoka Suigetsu, he must have seen the release at least once, and while in the Seireitei, lots of other shinigami would be under the effect also. It would be so hard to confirm if he successfully touches Kyouka Suigetsu before release, especially for how often Aizen used it to move around undetected.
    He would also have to be strong enough himself, yes, he was a child prodigy, but he would need his Bankai's ace up his sleeve to take him out.
    The only thing I can think of is he couldn't confirm if he was under Kyoka Suigetsu's effect or not. He only had one shot at his betrayal, but I do think he waited too long, don't pick fights with a near God.
    (Still my favourite character though ^_^ )

    • @KofiWilliams
      @KofiWilliams 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No you're incorrect about touching it. Yamamoto actually figured it out himself. If you can touch the blade or have it cut you then you can feel the spiritual power from it and know if it's really there or not. Gin waited simply because he's sadistic and wanted to kill Aizen right as he thought he was all powerful.

    You dont understand Gin. He said it in the end. He had to touch the tip of the sword to make it happen in order to do that Aizen had to have his guard down and activate kyoka suigetsu. If Aizen was normal he would be a lot more careful. But Aizens care went away when he evolved. We see this when kisuke said you would never let me touch twice. Then Gin noticed Aizen let his guard down and maybe planned what he did and prepared ichigo to be stronger.

    I think he had to wait for Aizen to put his guard down. Just like Urahara said, when he was just shinigami, he wouldn't give Kisuke a chance to use kidou/seal at him. Same thing with Gin.

    I feel more so that Gin being brutal towards his comrades and giving false hope to Rukia and all that is more on the side of keeping his façade to Aizen flawless. Aizen had eyes and ears all over the Soul Society, so it wouldn't help Gin keep up his image if he was kind like I figure he was on the inside. If he truly was off in his mind, then there's no reason he would have given Rangiku some of his persimmons unless he just had a particularly strong obsession with some random girl he found and with no one else. To me it just makes more sense that, yeah he definitely wasn't a good guy, but he was secretly kind (especially in the light novels with his persimmon tree and giving out dried persimmons with squad 3) and nowhere near as cruel as the fake person he was putting on for Aizen. Aizen was a great liar, but Gin was THE great liar.

    Bit late to the game, but I very vaguely recall a hint that Gin was after the Hogyoku because it contained a piece of Rangiku, and he wanted to restore that part of her. So in terms of timing in attempting to kill Aizen, it wasn't only that he had to play the long game to gain his trust and find an ample moment to touch Kyoka Suigetsu without being suspected of betrayal, but he also needed a chance to nab the Hogyoku so he could later find a way to make Rangiku "whole" again.
    As far as cutting down others who stood in his way, or tormenting them, I think there's an element where he did care about certain characters, but ultimately he cared for Rangiku the most, and that took priority over anyone else that might muck things up for him, and they were otherwise useful for adding credibility to his facade. Hinamori didn't have any relation to Gin, no camaraderie, nothing; so why give a damn if she was sacrificed for what he deemed the greater good? If anything, she probably annoyed him.

    A snake likes to walk alongside its prey measuring it to see if it will fit in its body, patiently assessing the best moment. It wouldn't have felt right to Gin to play the good guy regardless of his goals. He'd want to stay close to his prey. If Kubo had written him to be a good guy, Gin would still choose to be a double agent. The only way that reverses is if his prey is Yamamoto, but that would be a completely different story. I think Kubo likes animals and takes a lot of inspiration from them. I think you'd enjoy reading a bit about the animals he chooses Mr.Tommo. In your Haribel video, you didn't really talk about sharks but there's a lot of symbolism there that suggests why she looks so human in her resurrection and her aspect of death is sacrifice. I think Gin probably decided at a young age to keep his eyes closed upon learning of Kyoka Suigetsu and meeting Kaname and to train himself to be effective that way. It just seems like the kind of thing he would come up with and then chose to keep it up out of habit and because it was fun upon realizing that would never protect him from kyokasuigetsu anyways. Thanks for the great video, I enjoyed watching it.

    Great video. I would like to say that that was the perfect time to go for aizen, in what other scenario would he be able to touch aizens sword without aizen checking him? Aizen is no fool...he let his guard down when he merged with the hokyokou, plus alot if people miss this...gin technically killed aizen but the hokyokou gave him a zenkai boost to a next stage the same way when ichigo embarrassed him aizen lost the plot and snapped his own neck to them get another zenkai boost to his Hollywood w fusion form,when ichigo beats aizen and in the dialogue with kisuke..kisuke says that's the reason the kido he implanted in him is working is because ichigo pushed aizen to his limits BUT REMEMBER it wasn't just ichigo, gin also pushed aizen to transcend when he knew killed him.

      Lol i always pointed this out.
      There should be a sub story of Gin and Kenpachi, while all other shinigamis were wary of Kenpachi, Gin could casually be beside Kenpachi mocking Byakuya.
      Both are orphans, grew up in the poorest of environment.
      Their use of zanpaktou power are similar, straight forward, one is pure strength, one is pure skill, no mambo jumbo magic effects like Byakuya, Tousen etc. Both have shikai and bankai that just improves what they are already good at, although Gin has an extra effect but that might be a close relationship to Rangiku.
      I always felt that they had a hidden respect for each other, having one track mind for their goal, Kenpachi always wanted to fight the strong, Gin always wants to kill Aizen.
      He would probably fit in Kenpachi's squad.
      Both were not really liked by most shinigamis other then the one in their squads.
      Both are misunderstood.

    For his bankai what could have been cool would be say he was missing a body part from battle, say an arm, and how a snake sheds its skin and regrows it he can recover a body part. This is in addition to his poison effect.

    I'm wondering if Gin waited as long as he did because Aizen used to be more on guard than he was after he merged with the Hogyoku? It is explicitly stated somewhere that Aizen stopped caring as much on defence/tactics after reaching his cocoon stage I believe? I could be wrong though

    I think that Gin was waiting for the moment where he Aizen would be on the brink of victory at his most arrogant and least guarded moment. In the Soul Society Aizen was surely always on guard which was also true for Hueco Mundo. And Gin had to take care of Kyoka Suigetsu which means Aizen sword had to be drawn. Not to mention that Aizen's other followers like Tousen would've to be away. And this moment came when Aizen was at the brink of victory.
    As for why he didn't tell the Soul Society; Aizen was incredibly popular and charming lieutenant and later captain with hypnosis type sword and Gin also saw ho easily Aizen got away with getting rid of Urahara and co.
    But you're right since he was an amoral sociopath very similar to Tsukushima.
