My theory about Yoruichi’s Zanpakutō was that, much like Nanao Ise and Tokinada Tsunayashiro, the Zanpakutō belongs to the family and is given to the head of the clan. So when she left soul society, she relinquished her Zanpakutō back to her family for the next head to use.

Tokinada had his own Zanpakutō when he was a shinigami, but it got confiscated after he killed his own wife and left the Gotei 13. He just took Enrakyōten after that.
And you read CFYOW. You should know that she had her own Zanpakutō and she doesn't use it, because (according to her) she's much better/stronger without it and she needs to soothe her Zanpakutō from time to time, because it's angry at her.

@@kingju4865 Tokinada is apart of the Tsunayashiro family, one of the 4 Great Noble clans. So no, he is not apart of Yoruichi's family, but he is a Noble so they abide by the same rules.
And i mentioned him because the original comment was talking about him and the theory of Yoruichi's Zanpakutō, being just a Noble Family Zanpakutō and she lost it because she is no longer a Clan Head of Shihōin family which is disproven actually.
She's also got that sexy brown skin, a rarity in anime.

@@simpgod2170 Both the manga and anime state it's water and ice. Remember Hitsugaya's power even controls the weather and the moisture in the atmosphere. He even states that as long as water is nearby, he can regenerate and reform his ice.

I think her cat form being the bankai would work really well, especially if it did make her lose her mind. That would explain why she doesn't use her Zanpakuto at all. Maybe it turns her into a thunder cat goddess that can't think for herself and she doesn't like being in that mental state.
If I may suggest; you can bundle her Zanpakuto with Mashiro's, Hachi's, Iba's, and Isane's as 'lost Zanpakuto'; swords that we never got *anything* on.

I liked the full circle Yoruichi's character did in the story of bleach. She was introduced as a cat that had full control and awareness akin to a human and her story arc ends with her being a human that has no control over herself and acts like a cat.
It would have been interesting if Yoruichi was a similar type of species as Sajin Komamura, having used her humanization technique in the past to make herself human.

I like that, despite being Kisuke's lifelong friend and confidant, she will call him out and even punch his lights out if he crosses the line with his duplicity and endangering people by using them, and his perversions. It's telling they had an apparent falling out post Blood War, yet again Urahara used her against her will battling Askin so her ditching him is understandable. She did the same with Soifon, stopping her from violently killing others over nothing. Yoruichi is a true legacy character.

If you notice their friendship had it's toxicity especially on his part given he'd use and endanger her just to gain an edge over the opposition while also hiding information. I know this video was 6 months ago, however in the novel, the last delivery, she talked about her Zanpakotu, she says she needs to appease her zampa every day because she doesn’t use it (so zampa spirit is angry). After know Burn the Witch and bleach exist in the same universe, some people were talking about a theory, the youruichi’s zampa has the spirit of a sealed dragon, maybe his bankay is the materialization of the dragon, for me that makes sense. A new history about kisuke and Yoruichi is coming, according to one of the novel writers, when? We don’t know.

31:35 I agree, I think they are just really good friends. Far beyond just fraternal love, even, without being a couple whatsoever. Who knows, maybe they might screw around but for sure it would be casual and natural, no romantic ties imo I like the idea, like Ichigo and Rukia, that two people of opposed sex can get a long really well without having to bang or end together. We just have the idea that a man and a woman who get a long have to be in love, at it's not the case (all the time, at least).
Given her intelligence and personality, she probably knew that Soifon would get stronger if she left, that her being there was holding her back.
I loved her last fight and didn't feel like it's just fanservice.
My theory for her not using a Zanpakuto is that she either didn't want to use a blade anymore, for reasons. Or that Kisuke fused her with her Zanpakuto.
Either way, she wouldn't be splitting her power into the blade but have it in herself. (because remember what a Zankakuto is, a place that stores your power, so it also absorbs it right?)
So her going pseudo bankai would result in a transformation of herself.
And her spirit embodies that of a cat, so lovely that last scene with Kisuke.
She just didn't care about Soi Fon as much as she did Kisuke and can you blame her? Soi Fon is a total uptight see you next tuesday.
Or maybe she didn't have any zanpakuto. Instead she used one that's inherited within her family, like Nanao Ise & Tokinada.

Yoruichi doesn't use her sword cause it doesn't reflect her or benefit her hence she doesn't use it. Just like Soi Fon hates her bankai since its a nuke launcher & not something reflecting stealth, speed, or assassination. Its loud, obvious, flashy & tires her immensely. But her shikai does reflect her so she still uses it.
The answer has been there the whole time.
Based on how she lashed out at Yoruichi like a child in their fight.....I'd say her Bankai was spot on.

@@ahsanvirk130 That’s probably Kubo’s fault for not showing us Harribel once more during the aftermath of the war. He had to rush the final arc because of his illness. And if I have to take a guess that she’s recovering her strength after being chained up.

There is a scene in TBTP arc where Aizen PURPOSELY makes an image of himself to be seen by Kyoraku during the same time of night where he was encountered by Kisuke. I think the Central 46 mentioned that like a few other officers witnessed Aizen that night away from the hollowfication encounter. So I don't think Kyoraku wouldn've believed Yoirichi if she pulled him to the side with no hard proof.
And they didn't understand his zanpakuto ability yet, right? So it's useless

Maybe a future video on the Kidou Corps and what became of them, Tessai and Hachi? IMO not having Tessai, leader of the damn Kidou Corps, not being involved in the last arc at ALL was a missed opportunity. We at least got to see Hachi in action, but nothing of his superior. We saw glimpses of his ability in TBTP’s arc, but that teleportation Kidou would have been perfect for Urahara/Yoruichi/Grimmjow/Yujiro vs Askin’s final moments.
Anyway, love me some Yoruichi. Such a badass, and so absurdly hot. Purple hair and dark, tanned skin? Oh hell yeah.

I've never understood the idea of the yourichi, kysuke beyond friends thing since it's made clear there are not even in there fight with aizen she punched him when thinking that he her best friend was looking at her legs and in the askin fight was caught off guard and kick his jaw thinking he hit her but and behind the comment he made. Obviously showing that's not something they do. And personality that's something I like when not every guy and girl friendship has to turn into a romance
Yoruichi is the perfect brown skin girl: strong, fast, intelligent, beautiful and outgoing. Finally did a dark skin girl justice in anime.

Now what I am about to say is nothing but a fun head cannon theory I've been working and just want to hear what others think about it.
I always figured that Yoruichi Shihoin's Electric Cat form is in fact her Bankai. That we know Kisuke Urahara and Yoruichi Shihoin have a great relationship with each other. Yoruichi Shihoin trusts Kisuke Urahara with her life. So I propose the idea that Yoruichi Shihoin willingly subjugated herself to one of Kisukue Urahara's experiments and this experiment I thinking of is one that involves permanently bonding a Shinigami to their Zanpakuto. First, let me point out that when you consider what a Zanpakuto truly is permanently bonding with it isn't so far fetched. We can also see this happening with Dangai Ichigo and with Sosuke Aizen. We also see in a flashback a much younger Yoruichi Shiohion with a Zanpakuto. I also want to take a moment to point out Kensei Muguruma who is always in Shikai release after the Turn Back the Pendulum arc so I also want to theorize that in her bonded state with her Zanpakuto Yoruichi Shihoin is also in a constant Shikai release like Kensei Muguruma. Now I want to bring up Suì Fēng and how there is a stark contrast between her Shunko and Yoruichi Shihoin's Shunko. That the lightning element that comes off Yoruichi Shihoin's Shunko could be an ability of her Zanpakuto that she is bonded to. That Yoruichi Shihoin is combining her Shunko with her Zanpakuto's lighting elemental ability. Then with all this said it does make sense that Kisuke Urahara can trigger Yoruichi Shihoin's Bankai because it is the product of his experimentation. Then I want to remark on the personality change of Yoruichi Shihoin in the Electric Cat form by addressing one Zaraki Kenpachi and point out his Bankai changed his physical features and his personality. As for Yoruichi full-on cat form we see for the first half of the Bleach anime can be also chalked up to her Zanpakuto and its ability. I now want to draw attention to Yumichika Ayasegawa for my example and how he purposely says the wrong Release Command to make his Zanpakuto take a "false" Shikai form and how Yoruichi Shihoin could, in fact, be doing something very similar with the Zanpakuto she is bonded with to take on that full-on cat form.
Aaronirero for me he always had the most interesting design out of the Espada and id like to see how you deep dive into the character

Honestly since the reveal that some Zanpakutō's are passed down along family generations, such as with Nanao Ise use of Shinken Hakkyōken, I have felt that in all likelihood this to be the case with Yoruichi's. She probably left it in the family house for Yūshirō to take up once he was old enough to properly wield it.
She has/had her own Zampakuto. She doesn't like using it, and the Spirit of her zampakuto is angry at her(this is from the "Can't Fear Your Own World" light novel)
@@exequielbreton4393 Yes thats true although the ancestral zanpakuto theory is also plausible, in my opinion. We just have to wait until Kubi properly make a story out of it. Remember that Kubo isnt exactly the best man to make connect the dots in Bleach timeline despite being the creator of Bleach universe himself.

Completely agree. Did a disservice to Yoruichi at the end of the series. I choose to forget the last arc for things like this. It honestly feels like it should of ended with Aizen arc.
No reason to send her to Hueco Mundo. Isshin, Urahara, and Yoruichi had coordinated attacks to fight Aizen. All three of them only had one opponent they were looking at, none other mattered. And honestly it seemed like it was that from the very beginning. The three of them could have stopped any Karakura Town invasion by themselves until the Fake Karakura Town arc. But they didn't. They could have helped in the Lost Agent arc as well, but they didn't.
Anyway, I always felt her character took a shift down when it relied on Urahara so much. Do you know how many characters she bounced off of in Soul Society? Kuukaku. Byakuya. Soi-Fon. Ichigo. And I believe even Aizen had a very quick word with her when she and Soi-Fon restrained him. None of her character had to rely on Urahara and that was why she was at her best.
My biggest gripe with the final arc is Urahara needing to get involved in her fight and what, smacking her ass or some crap. And pretty much turning her submissive to him or something. And following his orders. News Flash, she's more experienced than him. Him being smart can only carry him so far. I find his best interactions are his brief ones with Mayuri. Or even his ones with Aizen.
Yuushiro. Wasn't he going to deliver something to Yoruichi? Like some Golden Armor or something? That was something. And yeah his introduction was a bit shaky, but they could've done more with him. Like do you know how surprised I was when he busted out Fire Shunko out of nowhere? I thought that was completely unnecessary and actively took away from Soi-Fon and Yoruichi. We could've learned more about the Shihoin side of things. Like how Yoruichi was doing her best to keep the Soul King together? That's the type of stuff her family should've been ready for and Yuushiro should've been that way more than Fire Shunko boy.
As far as her Zanpakutou? I like that she didn't use it. She never did in the past so why do it now? It's the same thing I have about Aizen. I see a lot of people wondering where his Bankai is. And it's like. . .not necessary. There are other things about the characters that take precedent IMO. I absolutely loved her Lightning God form. It kept up the fact that she was still so far ahead of Soi-Fon who kind of just recently unlocked a wind release (you know what i mean.) I thought that was really cool. The cat form was . . . something. There are a thousand ways for Kubo to . . .not insult her with it's introduction, but he did.
Last thing I want to say about Yoruichi is my favorite scene with her is when Ichigo finds out she has a little brother and he's surprised and accusatory towards her for not letting him know. And she just goes "What? You gonna put a ring on it or something?" (Paraphrasing) That was such an amazing line that encompassed Yoruichi's character to a T.
Anyway, Nice video. She's one of my favorite characters in Bleach and was my favorite character through the Soul Society.

I doubt the part where you said she has more experience than Urahara; Urahara’s past is still a mystery for the most part even in turn back the pendulum it seems Urahara is usually the one responsible for most assassination missions and at some point he was appointed a part of the Prison guards and then he had more to do even compared to Yoruichi at that point and somehow he still has time to do his research. Not to mention Tessai and Yoruichi treat Urahara not only as a friend but in some ways a superior. Out of the three it seems urahara is the leader when it came to their little group even when they were young Kisuke had been responsible for almost everything they have, the hotspring, the training, whether it be out of respect, love, loyalty Tessai and Yoruichi high ranking officers that have established their names in Soul Society sooner than Urahara, still sacrificed everything they had just to protect and save Urahara. Slight spoiler in the Can’t fear your own world novel which is a canon sequel even Kubo himself had given it the green light; the final chapters which include Urahara and Yoruichi; Yoruichi was concerned over Kisuke’s safety when Hisagi made an impression of why Kisuke made the Hogyoku, and Yoruichi addresses Urahara with “Lord” whether this was a mistranslation their conversation still shows how she is willing to protect him even going as far as killing the Shinigamis they considered Allies if they knew too much about his past or true motives heck it was Kisuke not Yoruichi who planned Tokinada ( Main Antagonist of the sequel novel) to get assassinated which shows that Yoruichi followed his order to have Tokinada killed for what he consider good for all of Soul Society.
Why do we have 2 Lightning zanpakutos, 2 fires zanpakutos and 2 ice zanpakutos but not a single water zanpakuto?

Turning Back the Pendulum showed that Yoruichi is the one who recommended Urahara for the role of Captain when the previous captain was promoted to Squad Zero. And when Urahara was framed and going to be another victim of Aizen, it was Yoruichi who came to save the day.
Moreso, we know that she was Commander in chief of the Onmitsukido while Urahara's highest role was Corps Commander. Most of the time she outranked him and had a grander reputation than him in Soul Society. That's mostly because of her family lineage, but that is more reason as to why her becoming more tied to him limited what her character was initially.
@@risersin7957 no we don’t; you’re only stating on what happened 200 years or so ago, pendulum the arc is not their full past history as even that is holding back on Urahara’s history in soul society we didn’t even see what he accomplished with the RnD department for those 3 yrs. before the incident occured, and even if Yoruichi was Captain of the onmitsukido, it doesn’t really tell us the full backstory between her, Urahara, Tessai, and Kukaku.
Again while Urahara’s highest position was Corps commander he had a lot of freedom so much so that he can choose missions and create missions of his own and Yoruichi wouldn’t bat an eye showing to us how much faith she has in his abilities and judgement but also how much respect she has for his experience that she doesn’t question it at all, but even the nature of that is weird he was a third seat not a lieutenant and he already had such great freedom compared to others meaning Urahara wanted that position and stayed in that position ‘till Yoruichi recommended him to captain, because as Yamamoto put it she wouldn’t stop bragging about his abilities in her report; notice how when Yoruichi told him, he wasn’t really shocked, for a guy who wasn’t second in command he was confident it was him who was recommended. Another thing to note was before Soi fon arrived Kisuke was already discussing something with Yoruichi about the exams most likely as she only knew about his mission when a member reported back to Urahara.
Another thing to note was at that point most of his best friends or closest friends likely had high ranking positions within SS: Tessai was a captain, Yoruichi was a captain, and Kukaku might’ve once been a captain or something equal to that lvl or she was retired at that point due to her injuries since according to Shinji during their time there were a lot of Changes between the captain of divisions, Love for example was only promoted to captain 3 yrs. before Pendulum arc began but even that isn’t clear who the previous captains were; So yeah Pendulum arc isn’t really reliable.
Then there’s Tokinada teasing Yoruichi about how much she doesn’t know and how much Urahara has kept from everyone about his knowledge of the Soul King and how the world works.
The Hollow experiments he must’ve conducted because again as I pointed out he already knew the process of Hollowfication when confronting Aizen which shocked even Tessai and Shinji, the creation of his Hogyoku we don’t even know how and most likely all three of his closest friends never knew it existed at all. Tessai was shocked; Yoruichi most likely only knew when they reached the Human world and Kukaku probably only knew when Yoruichi told her.
Then there’s their childhood to adolescence Kisuke built the underground training facility beneath the sokyoku hill with no one even knowing about it, but also the Healing springs he placed there...the weird thing is that nowhere in soul society could you find such healing springs it was only ever mentioned in the Soul King Palace as a certain Zero squad member pointed out “Kisuke must’ve created those same waters when he analyzed my Hot springs water.” Implying that Kisuke was able to enter the Soul King’s palace before Pendulum arc how? Ichibe Himself trusts Urahara and his decisions but then again it’s most likely because He and Kisuke have similar personalities and beliefs.
So no Pendulum arc isn’t even showing us the full extent of Yoruichi’s growth as a character for the most part it only delves in the Vizard’s relationship, and the tiniest hints of Kisuke’s character history and his major growth in that arc alone. Their childhood was barely mentioned and how someone like Kisuke and Tessai were able to play in her Mansion when they’re not even members of the Noble houses like Kukaku, their times together as well is a mystery again Kisuke was the leader of their group you could even feel it in the current story, Tessai even calls him with honorifics, Yoruichi doesn’t question and follows what he instructs unless she’s being grumpy towards him, Kukaku as she said in SS can’t ignore a request from Kisuke since he’s involved. All pendulum arc did was bring us up to speed with what happened and why they were exiled. Nothing about their past before the *incident (oh was suppose to mean the arc not incident srry) was ever revealed.

Yeah... Kubo dropped the ball in the end, sadly enough. Definitely one of the best characters in the series reduced to that. Also... that "brother" is dead & buried. =P As for the battle against Aizen, erh... my take on it is that Aizen's reiatsu was already dangerously toxic before his many morphs. Iow, using full power could mean no reiatsu left to protect their bodies. Orrrrr.... they were aware of the continual upgrade potential.
My head canon has always been the reason no one was using their bankai in the fight against Aizen is because they were all afraid of his hypnosis ability being used to trick them into attacking each other.

@MrTommo2304 Since Yoruichi is the creator of flash step and that is something that all soul reapers have the ability to learn or use; is it safe to extrapolate she should have gone on to squad zero? I could be off in my theory but in the video when you covered squad zero I remember you mentioning that (paraphrasing) each member had to have contributed something to the soul society history in some way to gain a position there. So This made me wonder why if Yoruichi was the originator of this very specific technique, then why was she not considered for squad zero. I'm sure being exiled due to interfering with Urahara's trial might have had an effect on things obviously but I just wanted to know your thoughts or opinion on that. Thanks

I just had a few things that I wanted to mention, I LOVE your work, you go in-depth and have a great degree of analysis. But I'd say that there are just a few things (from my personal opinion, since I can't pretend I have grounds to say these are pure facts). I'd say the Shunko-cat form is paramount to showing what makes Yoruichi a bit more unique and shows a regard tot he fact that she's still that frighteningly powerful despite not having her zanpakuto (though I never found that cool, I wanted to see it, ha ha). It is very fan servicey but that's not new to Shonen-Jump characters or manga (so to me no big deal).
The inclusion of her little brother Yushiro was important in my eyes, though a secondary character purely: its to show how the Shihoin Clan is carrying on beyond Yoruichi's departure over a century ago. Sure it was silly and had some moments, but to see him confirmed at least two things: Despite appearances, he's fairly powerful and quite handy at Hakuda like his sister (I liken it to a clan specialty, though I suppose I might be reaching a bit there) and she recently taught him shunko, yet he was able to wield it pretty handily in a short time. It just means the clan is in good hands (though he seems a bit naive, it also gave Askin more cool points for defeating so many people and serves as a purpose to show how his 'immunity' works. Same with Yoruichi's cat-form dominating him: pre-Vollstandig form).
And just a last thought of mine is honestly, they'd made sure to allow other characters time to shine (it was cheap to her, but I suppose it felt that she fell back: but I'm glad that she did get in again).
I wish she got more fights/screen time
Yorucihi is a favorite female manga character of mine. Not because she is written well but because of what she accomplished/potential. I really gotta commend her for still being captain level without a shinigami main weapon
I like how he barely explained how animal transformation works in the universe. Adds to the mystery in a good way imo. There are many examples of Kubo not explaining something and making it worse but this isn't one of those. I think Bankai's and this are some of the best utilized mysteries in the series.

I’ve always thought Yoruichi’s Zanpaktou is just not actually useful for combat which is why she neglects it. Similar to Soifon’s Bankai being useless and conflicting with her fight style.

It's called the stealth force for a Reason you know. About the use of a zanpaktou by yourichi you forget the main criteria to be in the stealth force is ability to fight In hand to hand combat. Even soifon mentioned how she detested her bankai because of its shape and huge size going against the philosophy of the stealth force hence why her shikai was preferred in line with the stealth required to strike her opponent in the same place twice.
Kubo decided to do that because of two reasons. Fans have always wanted/thought there was some kind of love triangle between Soi Fon, Yoruchi and Kiskue. And he needed to give her some kind of Bankai level upgrade to fight while still within her realm of possibility but he never gave her a zanpakto. He said she cast it away so he couldn't think of a way for her to have it again and what powers it would have last minute. SO he made her an electric catgirl.

There was never any romance between Soi Fontaine and Yoruichi at any point. Soi Fon was a child and student of Yoruichi that looked up to her in an unhealthy obsessive way that Yoruichi never reciprocated. Her and Kiskue were lovers and had been for a long time. Soi Fon hated Kiskue because Yoruichi not only liked him more but loved him and she knew she would never receive the same attention from Yoruichi, she was left without a second thought from Yoruichi who gave up her nobility to live with Kiskue in a shitty part of town on earth selling candy. They had far more than a friendship which is more than hinted at by Kiskues statement of being familiar with her ass in the air and the way she acted in her thunder cat form.
