    Honestly my favorite moment of the 4th division was a scene in the anime/manga involving Isane and Unohana that's never really spoken about. Isane goes outside for a walk around the barracks late at night because she was having troubles sleeping or having nightmares. She notices Unohana seated on the ground staring ominously off in a distance with her hair down instead of her usual braid. Ever since learning about Unohana's past I often feel like Isane was having troubles sleeping because Unohana was in a state where she was truly herself, possibly letting her bloodlust be free and that vibe is what was disturbing Isane on that night.

    • @CaptainKotetsu
      @CaptainKotetsu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@toadsucker6964 Yeah, a lot of people forget that Isane clearly wants to prove herself in battle. There’s several scenes where she starts to chase after an enemy but is ordered to fall back.
      The hard truth is that Soul reapers only earn true respect by showing combat prowess. Their whole culture is based around swords, not bandages. Squad 4 is the punching bag/sh*t shoveler for the rest of the gotei 13 and that won’t change until they get a chance to show their strength with a blade. They passed the soul reaper academy so they can clearly fight. They just aren’t allowed to because they’re busy healing or getting picked on by squad 11.
      Nobody sleeps on combat medics in real life because they go through the same basic training as the normal soldiers.
      Only difference is they can save lives as well as end them, thanks to their extra courses in medicine.

      I always felt like Unohana didn't reveal much of the distant past to anyone in Squad Four. Unohana seemed like she kept her past private. Isane knew something, but it was mostly tantalizing clues. For example, I suspect she knew about Unohana's scar, but only had a vague story to explain it. Unohana may have taken the time to teach Isane some kendo lessons - she was known for being a kendo master. But I don't think Unohana ever gave her enough pieces of the puzzle to see the real picture - until the letter.

    I wonder if, when Kubo started developing his idea for the coming hell arc, if he chose to put Iba and Isane to the side so to save them for that arc. As largely blank characters, and Captains now, the Hell arc would be the perfect place to really explore their skill set and characters. Especially if there's some darkness to them thst we don't know about yet.
    For instance, I just always got a sense of...offness with Iba. Similar to, but not as profound as what i felt with Unahana. Maybe it's just his design, but I got the idea he was overcompensating when trying to be such a dedicated and ideal Soul Reaper. Like he's trying to wash away the sins of the past or something. And we know he was part of the 11th once upon a time.

    Isane is kinda weird indeed but she feels like one of those that pays her dues and is really diligent
    She has one of the coolest moments in the anime, when she does the mass communication kido Tenteikūra to warn everyone about Aizen and you get a great sense of the aesthetic of how the powers of Bleach work with her full incantion and then you had that great editing sequence with all the characters popping up in panel when the spell is complete.

      Kenpachi was stronger than Unohana when he was a child, he was so strong that he subconsciously sealed off the majority of his powers so he didn't win every fight in one hit. Whatever way you cut it Kenpachi surpassed Unohana as a warrior, especially considering she basically never vowed to fight again because she had already come against the powerful opponent she was looking for all those years ago. While it's unfortunate Unohana had to go it wasn't a vain sacrifice as Kenpachi is far superior to Unohana in combat with his full potential unlocked.

    As usual, an excellent analysis. The Fourth Squad is quite essential to the Thirteen Squads. Lose your medical division and you're at a major disadvantage to outright screwed. In that sense, I find it kind of coincidentally interesting how they being off the frontlines lines up with the combat philosophy of the division, stay off the battlefield, your role is supportive. Also, each of its three major characters sort of represent a different aspect/viewpoint of the 4th Squad.
    Hanataro-Healing is often associated with good and he's probably one of nicest characters in the entire Bleach universe. As stated in the video though, in the militaristic organization like the Gotei 13, being the medic can be a thankless job paralleling how Hanataro is treated like crap. Ultimately, healers and doctors are there to help, and Hanataro chooses to do what he feels is right by helping Rukia, even if it means treason. He represents the purer/nobler aspects of the 4th Squad, and how thankless that job can be.
    Insane-A step up from Hanataro in being more experienced, but representing the conflict between "soldier" and "healer" in being a combat medic. She is quick to action in contrast to Unohana and visibly struggles with remaining on the sidelines while her comrades are out there fighting and dying. If she goes out there, she could help, but if she goes and something happens, who looks after the injured? In the TYBW Arc, Insane might also represent bellflower, those who grieve are loved. She definitely grieved for her fallen comrades, including Unohana (and she wasn't alone in-universe or out-of-universe).
    Unohana-The ultimate and darkest representation of the 4th Squad. As captain, she is the most experienced, knowing that as the medics, they have to stay off the battlefield and stay focused on their duties. She is also the most skilled healer...but that comes with a flipside. As a healer, she knows EXACTLY what can kill a person. Her abilities overall represent control over life and death, which the Fourth Division hold as the lynchpins of the life and death of Soul Reapers. Unlike Hanataro, she is willing to use her medical ability to harm and kill (and might have done so in the past), and scary enough to get unruly patients to accept their treatment without a fuss. Her death is also ruled a major loss for the Soul Society, just like what would happen if a medic is lost on the battlefield.

    My opinion (no expert here) - At least from the anime side, knowing what I know now from the manga about Unohana ultimately - you get the sense from these little scenes here and there scattered throughout that she's almost equal in respect given, if not authority, to Yamamoto from all the other captains. Those little looks she gives or the way she phrases things...and the subsequent reactions from even other captains lets you know the sway that she could have potentially held over the 13 Gotei, if she had chosen to do so. She was the only captain that I ever thought had a semi-normal working relationship with Mayuri.

    • @MrTommo2304
      @MrTommo2304  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I definitely agree - maybe not exactly as high as Yamamoto, but very close. Most of them refer to her as 'Lady' Unohana and her seniority is well known. I think Mayuri is wary of her, but they still aren't exactly amicable. But Unohana, as we see in the Hueco Mundo arc, is able to put him in his place fairly easily.

    Unohana was always my favorite character, and I felt like the way Kubo wrapped up her story was such a disservice. Not only was it a disservice to her character, but in a way also to the wishes of Yamamoto. He wanted her and the other healers kept safe. Instead they killed her off to buff Zaraki, and lost their best healer anyway. It would, imo, been a better use of her skills to fight alongside Zaraki. It would have been better to risk losing her in the process of killing the enemy, than just outright killing here.

    You know what I liked most about Unohana?? Her Kenpachi status history is fully symbolized to the people around her, before we even know about it. Whenever another shinigami question's her or if she even gives a hint of being cross, they instantly get intimidated and back off in a rather frightened manner. Also the fact that we didn't know why her hair was always bound like that, and it turns out that was basically there to hold her power back, just like Kenpachi's eyepatch. And the fact that in 100 year blood war arc she said she wanted to be out there more than anyone, obviously she want to fight. That's also why she showed up behind Jushiro and Shunsuei to help them fight Yamamoto during the soul society arc. Or maybe it's just spirit energy levels. Spirit energy is tied to the user's life force and Unohana did say she was stronger than anyone but Zeraki. If she has significantly more than Yamamoto (which seems to be the case based on their Zanpakuto size) it would explain why it was taking her longer to age.

    What I like about the Fourth is that they're representative of the affordances a truly militaristic society must make. If this hierarchy is entirely built upon the capabilities of its warriors and in doing battle, then in order to ensure that they can do more battle there must be some element present to mitigate the trauma from battle. Not just the physical trauma either--the emotional stress also needs to be tended to if these warriors are going to fight for lifetimes upon lifetimes. This synchs perfectly with Yachiru Unohana's entire mentality as she sees healing as a way to prolong the fight, as a means of continuing the battle. You say it's a shame that the TYBW sees her become more interesting because she 'stripped away' her 4th Division self but I disagree--she showed us the TRUTH of the division and that's what makes it compelling to me.

    • @varsoonhks3211

      @MrTommo2304  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think that's a fair point, although I think there's a point to be made as well that Yachiru Unohana doesn't really feel like the 'truth' of the 4th Division since as far as we know that was only her persona during her time as the 11th Division's Captain, and Retsu is who she embodied wholly when she chose to dedicate herself to healing. But I think you do make a great point though about how they must mitigate the trauma themselves - it's like who will heal the healers?

I can't remember of he accepted the seat or if the novel left it in the air, though I kinda think the first one is the correct. Again, might be wrong. We now know thanks to the new Hell Chapter that Atau Rindo is the current Lieutenant of the 7th Division. Considering this, one of two things happened: either Kubo totally retconned Iasochika as Lieutenant of the 7th Division, or, on a more in-universe alternative, Iasochika accepted the role, but resigned shortly after for whatever reason. Again, I don't remember exactly if Iasochika indeed accepted the role in the novel, but these are some interesting options to consider

    You know Hanataro has to be one of the most criminally underused characters in Bleach. In the Arrancar arc during the Hueco Mundo invasion before the first reunion with Orihime both Rukia and Sado who when they split up end up on their own and both take serious damage in their fights with the 9th and 5th Espada (if you can even call Sado vs Nnoitora a fight). While having him yes later save Rukia would we have lost anything by either Rukia or Renji thinking to drag Hanataro along with them so that the group would've had a healer with them while diving into the heart of the enemy base? Just think if Hanataro had been paired up with Sado he could've probably stayed hidden when Sado got taken out by Nnoitora and by the time he would've been done healing him Sado would either have been healed in time to help Nel fight against Nnoitora, or he could have fought Tesra while Zaraki was was getting his Espada fight. And then you have the Thousand Year Blood War where, now that I think about it, the entire 4th Division is essentially useless. Hanataro it's worth remembering is in charge of the 14th Advanced Relief Team so we should've seen him running around during the second invasion non stop as you had Shinigami constantly receiving serious injuries.

    You should have also mentioned Isane's crush on Unohana. Which is very rare in Bleach. I think her crush was legit, not like that of Hinamori.

      I think exactly the opposite: Hinamori has the real atraction and Isane admire.

    It was a big part of my fantasy to see Hanataro end up as lieutenant of the 4th division at the end of bleach, but oh well.

    Does anyone know if any of the English voice actors are coming back to dub the thousand year blood war arc I've only heard Ichigo and supposedly kenpachi's voice actor is coming back but does anyone know if we're getting new people for the arc or is the original cast coming back!? If anyone can give me answers it would really be helpful.

    Didn't mention Seinosuke Yamada at all, shame, as the contrast of his opinion on kaido and Unohana's true opinion is very interesting.
