Despite having a smaller role than many anticipated, there's no denying the impact Äs Nödt had on the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc - particularly the first half. So, thank you to everyone who voted for As Nodt! Safe to say I'm more than happy to talk for way too long about this guy. I'm interested to hear what you guys thought of him - awesome or perhaps overrated? Also, as a side note, I know I'm pronouncing his name wrong due to the umlauts - if there are any native German speakers in the comments (or just anyone who knows!), I'd love to know how to properly say it. Let me know!

Äs= basically the same as As.
Nödt: if you take for example, the word ,,firm", the ,ö ' is somehow pronounced as the ,i' in the word firm.
Im not German, only learned it for 12 years, so I can somewhat help with the pronounciation. :D

Interesting to note is that äs does seem to be implied to know that the auswahlen is coming soon during the second invasion,as when he is breaking out of the sub zero he thinks to himself of his fear of "his majesty's wrath and having his very existance/essence taken from me" which does imply he knew what was coming.

Use google translate with Hungarian language and write in the following: Ez Nött. (Type this in the Hungarian side.)
Then check the audio. Im Hungarian and we have like, 18 more letters than the English, and ,ö ' is one of these 18 letters.
As Nodt has always been the flagship Sternritter to me. Iconic design, and chilling screen presence.......and him shredding Byakuya to a bloody pulp at the end of chapter 501 (or maybe its 502) is one of the most jaw dropping moments in the series.

His ability to strike sheer and uncontrollable terror into his opponents was his defining and most memorable trait, no doubt the Shinigami have not encountered such psychological tactics. Still his backstory is just tragic, makes you wonder how many of Yhwach's followers went along with his game because he gave them a chance at living...
Should have been the core theme, since YH himself is afraid of death.
The last theory is interesting, and it's something that's explored more through Hao's followers in the manga Shaman King, really leaning into the angle of having a cult of broken people behind a charismatic and all-powerful leader.

It's crazy to think that Byakuya was supposed to remain dead but Tite Kubo got death threats from toxic fans to the point he revived him.

@@nealmason8785 Because characters die, and it shows the gravity of a situation. Byakuya was a good one, because of his conviction to carry out his duty and his pride, so naturally he would never back down from a fight no matter the odds. That doesn't mean that the protags should always win

If he wanted him dead, he'd have stayed dead anime fans are toxic as a whole and get pressed over those issues
I enjoyed his creepy love for Senbon Zakura, who knows why this fear ridden Stern Ritter would be so attached to Byakuyas Bankai.
Possibly because Senbon Zakura is itself a terror weapon as you see the many blades form and aim ready to skewer you as Byakuya merely stands there impassive to the bloody death. Maybe that was his fascination. He sure made Byakuya feel that terror.

@Lost Impact I'd say his fight with As Nodt and subsequent curbstomping is a metaphor for what happened to Soul Society at large. They thought they wiped out the Quincies(quite brutally too) and now their chickens came home to roost as they were mistaken. The stone cold samurai 'honor' did not help.

I really like how As Nodt got a flashback before dying, not even the Shutzztaffel had flashbacks!!
I think that was for the better. Pernida is a part of the Soul King and less is more in that regard. Askin just doesn't seem like the type of person to have a flashback. And Gerard and Lille....We got too much of them already and everyone was sick of them by the time they kick the bucket.

@@joseancintrongonzalez800 I'm thoroughly convinced the only people who really liked Gerard and Lille didn't read the manga at release. Their fights were so long it was absolutely grating and there were 4-5 fake out deaths for each of them and they just didn't stay down.

Askin and Pernida were more entertaining because they were tanky but killable.

Yup. I couldn't believe my eyes. And I honestly thought that Kubo would kill him. I just sat and cried my fu***** eyes out, and I KNEW Byakuya would die. And yeah I was kinda happy he didn't, but a part of me wished he died there.
@@AgrestisAnima He was supposed to die there...it literally said RIP in the last frame. I heard Kubo started getting hate mail and death threats from hardcore fans...and that kinda forced Kuo to write Byakuya back into the story.... His involvement doesn't really make much sense after As Nodt... Rukia winning on her own wouldve made much more sense.
@@Will-wv7sn Editing staff didn't like him killing off a fan favorite either. That's why Toshiro also gets ping-ponged back and forth between dying and living.
Seeing byakuya completely getting destroyed was absolutely horrifying. Because byakuya was the quintessential shinigami it showed just how screwed the shinigami were, how they had no hope.
It really let us know these Quincys were not playing around. I was heartbroken
Ever think when As Nodts mask was frozen, his lips were touching the inside of the mask. So when his mask came off, it ripped his lips off?

I love the pure psychological horror of As Nodt in his appearances. It's like the r rated version of genjutsu from Naruto just waaaay more hardcore.

I think the thousand year blood war arc would have been so much better if Byuakia stayed dead. He's one of my favorite characters but it solidifies just how much of a threat the quincies were.
True, I believe alot of captains and shinigami were supposed to die. The backlash from the fans kept him from permanently killing characters but imo it was the fans fault that the war arc felt less impactful and weightless.

As Nodt was probably my favourite sternritter as far as visuals were concerned I think it was a really good move to run with him so much he definitely stands out. I think his shifts in personality actually help his whole fear motif because what's more frightening than someone who is dangerously unpredictable. Still his fight will definitely be a highlight of the final chapter anime
I don't think As Nodt was always missing his lips. I believe he lost them due to the frostbite he got from Rukia's Shikai. And I only say this because the Bleach Jet Artbook shows As Nodt without his mask looking quite normal. But otherwise great video as always Tommo.

The As Nodt/Mask scene really does set the tone of the whole arc. That all-consuming, grim, hopeless determination in the face of a vicious, ruthless, insurmountable enemy; the first truly ruthless enemy. Its one thing seeing Kira get capped, but this really hammers it home. A truly fantastic sequence and an excellent character.
I think Byakuya saying thanks to you stealing my bankai I actually became stronger than I ever could have been is such a triggering thing for As because of his fear of Yuhabach, if what he said is true then Yuhabach might view him as a failure and take back his gift, so it pushes him to go all out

I gotta say Ãs Nodt was my favorite Quincy by far. I liked everything he did and everything that got served to him. As for the way he died, I hear many people say that the top of his head was cut off. I'm not sure I'm totally on board with that. We know that Rukia's Bankai flash freezes everything in a certain ratio around her to absolute cero, this would include her and I doubt she would be able to deal a slicing cut to Äs without shattering herself. What I believe happened and this backed up a little in the manga is as follows: There would be a rush of air between the extremely cold areas and the average temp surroundings (cause science, I would explain this but it is complicated). I think the point or Rukia's Bankai is to kill her opponent beyond reasonable regeneration. How do you achieve this? Freezing an opponent to the point and state that the beat of a butterfly's wings would be enough to crumple your freezing body into a dust that would be carried by the wind. This is what happened to Äs Nodt's head and it is proved by the trail of white dust blowing the other way.

I always interpreted his dual personalities as being catered to the ones he is trying to install fear into (or even a reflection of that person) like stoic for byakuya and childish for rukia works best to instill fear into them.
Something about him mentioning how the sterneritter group seemed to have personalities almost strictly based on abilities, makes me consider the the fact the espada came off confused. They seemed to be stuck in limbo in figuring out their worth, and the sternritter were designed for a very specific purpose. And of course, it was illustrated what happened after it was served
So the Espada arc had the villains looking to prove themselves to evade returning to the old. That second oddball arc had ichigo trying to keep his bonds secured and remind him of his value in fighting with no more aizen. The final introduced a villain seemingly so mighty he led to his own defeat
Doesn’t Rukia essentially go into cryogenic suspended animation in her bankai? She’s technically alive but not enough to feel anything or move. As had a great design, loved his straight jacket coat and muzzle which made sense when we saw his backstory, and I’m with you on the first invasion. I loved seeing some of my favorite shinigami getting wrecked right at the beginning of the arc. It hyped it up so much for me. Yhwach had a tendency to fly off the handle for no reason so I always thought it was his power inside them that made all the Quincy prone to the same behavior. The Quincy are Gnostics, Yhwach is the demiurge, it’s an old Christian heresy from antiquity. Roman and Christian myths combined. Yhwach is an evil creator. Great video as always.
Honestly As Nödt reminds me of Unohana when he smiles after stealing Byakuya’a Bankai, as she gives off that same eerie energy when she is using her bankai and smiles

Great character analysis, these breakdowns of Bleach are awesome. Cool to see As Nodt being discussed as he's in personal top 10 Quincies - looking forward to his Brave Souls release. Never noticed prior to this video the change in As Nodt's personality between initial appearance & confrontation with Rukia. Maybe As Nodt was composed during his first appearance because he had the advantage of the medallion against most Shinigami (the medallion's ability would scare a lot of Shinigami) & then became rattled when he lost Senbonzakura Kageyoshi leading to his shift in behaviour out of fear.

As Nödt was my favorite Sternritter! He was easily the most intimidating and his ability was very powerful. I didn't like how early he got taken out. Some of the supposed godly Quincy felt weaker than him. I'd have preferred him as one of the final opponents.

I remember seeing him for the first time & being creeped out by his design (especially after learning that he brutally "killed", Byakuya), and thought "I don't think his design can be any more creepier". Just when I thought of that, Tatar Foras dropped, and I couldn't be more wrong.
First of all, I just wanna say you're doing an amazing job with this channel and I love how the anime/manga community with youtubers' channels is so full of knowledge and beautiful presentation.
Other thing I wanted to say, as a big fan of manga, tho I haven't read or watched too many, I am familiar with all of the GOATs and many, many different stories - I feel like Kubo's writing is up there with the absolute best ones. Some of the character arcs and traits are absolutely magnificent. Everything with the Espadas, their personalities according to the aspects of death and terrible human emotions, Ulquiorra's story which is one of the saddest ever, many interesting characters from Soul Society and from the mere start of the show and finally the Sternritters with their feelings and characters as well, kinda similar to Espada but more grandioze and impactful I feel. What a freaking story and what a freaking manga! Not to mention how fascinated I am with the world of Bleach: the 3 realms, Hueco Mundo and that Hollow world is the greatest depiction of Purgatory that I've ever come across, by far!! Such an interesting concept. Soul Society is also so unique, I mean we don't even know that whole establishment and if they are truly on the good side or it's built on some lies like Tsunayashiro thought. The whole despise of the Soul King, a God by Yhwach and Aizen wanna be Gods... And finally, the most devious realm and the least known of them all - Hell. There can be such an amazing, long story on Hell, 100 episodes I swear to God. The whole thing where (if I remember correctly) that 5th, unknown Noble house wanted to cover Hell as they feared the might of it, that really intrigues me. The origins of that and the relation to other worlds, does it even have the origin?! Love Bleach, such a real and authentic story, Kubo is a creative genius as good as Oda IMHO!

I think Yhwach meant As Nodt survived the Quincy extermination because if he's mixed blood Quincy it doesn't make sense for Yhwach to do that. I'm guessing during the extermination he was injured or maybe after developed this debilitating condition perhaps involving his lips.
I think he lost his lips when rukia froze him and he had to tear his whole body and face out of the ice
Byakuya had the best payback. Neutered his former tormenter's final form with just his Shikai, then left him to his little sister for target practice.

He really serves no purpose to stay in the story after how he was set up to die. Also ruining Renji character progression

In anime BLEACH Thousand Year Blood War arc, Äs Nödt voiced by Matsuoka Yoshitsugu.
He best known as Harem King of Japan who voicing Kirito, Fuutarou, Arata, Rio, etc. Not only MC Harem, he also voicing antagonist and supporting character.
I still remember reading through the first invasion every week, As Nodt undoubtedly created an atmosphere within the Bleach universe that had never been felt before. Really great video!

The thing that As Nodt "survived" was likely the soul reapers' purge of the Quincies
I didn't realize As Nodt didn't have much screen time. Personally I think he's easily the coolest and most memorable antagonist in the final arc. Also interesting Byakuya uses flower petals, he uses thorns, and Rukia "froze him in fear"

As for the fight, when As landed the killing blow to Byakuya (well technically the final blow as Byakuya was able to hold onto his life) my jaw dropped because like everyone else, I honestly thought Byakuya was going to steamroll As, but they never happened , then we got that picture of Rukia, it was the first jumpscare for bleach.
As Nodt really seems like he's obsessed with the Bankai, like he really is lonely, and he wants another soul to accompany his own. Like it was the only thing that brought him comfort and a release from his own fear.
I see his character change in the second invasion as that As Nodt is losing his composure because he had the one thing he wanted, and finally had, suddenly torn back away. Losing the Bankai he valued so much took a piece of his sanity too.
I also think the First Invasion is kinda like, he's "on the clock". Like he has to be professional and do what he's told, efficiently and quickly.
The second invasion is more like being at work on a slow day. You're working, but just kinda doing whatever you want.

When he was called a survivor I'm pretty sure it was a reference to the near Quincy genocide that the soul reaper took in some number of years back
Even though his name is 'Äs Nödt', in English ver., it's written 'As Nodt'.
According my search, the similar of dakuten found in Japanese is umlaut. It's used in some European countries' languages such as German.
A and Ä seem the same at first glance but Ä should be written Ae when we can't use any umlaut. In the same way, Ö should be written Oe.
Then, I think Äs Nödt's name also should be written 'Aes Noedt' in English ver.
In Japanese ver., when his name is written in Japanese, it's 'エス･ノト'. 'エス･ノト' is 'Esu Noto' in Japanese romanization. Esu and As are too differ to pronunciate, aren't they?
Anyone knows why?

Man it's been years and there's so many things that I forgot about the final Arc light can never forget how well this character was drawn in some panels. Like I forgot that kimpati had a bankai before recently rereading. If this character is designed stuck out more to me than that years later

I love As Nodt, he made Byakuya, one of the most stoic and level headed characters in Bleach shit his pants.
I genuinely like that Yamamoto KO’d those three. It shows just how powerful the old man is. None are quite on his level. Especially when he’s at 100%+ health.
Well Ichibei is stronger than Yama lol. And obviously Almighty Yhwach is too. And god Yhwach is flat out the most powerful being in the verse lol and by the end of the series Ichigo surpasses Yama easily too lol. But yes Yama is crazy strong.
Kubo did an insanely good job with designing Äs Nödt. Everytime I look at him I get spine tingled.
Its still insane to me that this guy ACTUALLY kill Byakuya, and then author get bullied into returning him to life.
Yea I'm not sure kubo got bullied into bringing him back that was just a rumor more than likely and people came to believe it.
That's prob just a rumor lol. NO ONE is able to provide any evidence for that. It's just a thing that some people prob assume then exploded in the fandom. Spread wide like how u said that here. & anyone else gonna believe that without even trying to fact check it.

Edit - 50 Shonen jump anniversary edition, he said about it that "fans can be "really" persuade in social media", if you are hardcore enough, you maybe can find original, japanese version and translate it yourself.

Persuade ≠ "death threats". & in the context u're providing here, it seems like he's talking about it in general. Not with Byakuya's death situation. Besides by the time this was publicly released, social media wasn't nearly as big as now. So that's even more unlikely.

I think Nodt is more terrifying than Ywach. I kinda wish he was the final villain or at least one of the final Quincy to be defeated near the end.
This is true given the raw psychological terror he puts his opponents through. Yhwach just ends you quickly without getting elaborate. As absurd as it sounds As Nodt was a sign that Soul Society were going to get trounced by the resurgent Quincies, no doubt they took some of their tactics from human warfare knowing the 'honorable' Samurai minded Shinigami wouldn't be able to cope with them. And things sure haven't been the same for Gotei 13 since the war's end, though they changed a bit for the better.

Yhwach could have visited As Nodt following the quincy extermination 200 years prior to the storyline, which would put it around the year 1800-1820, which might be a bit early for them to be using oxygen masks, however, if we allow that, could then provide anm explanation for As Nodt not to be a Mixed-blood quincy.

It may be so that Kubo himself be projecting the concept of fear into the readers i.e. Byakuya fans when they come to realize that he may be dead and the fact that As Nodt keeps saying I won't kill you maybe Kubo letting people know that he did not plan on killing Byakuya rather instilling fear into the minds of others

I have a pretty nifty theory on his "changed" personality between the first and second invasions.
Äs Nödt changes his behavior and way of speech depending on what his enemies fear.
I think the reasoning behind as nodts personality change for the second invasion is because he beat one of the most powerful captains in the Gotei 13, and now because of that, it not only made him overly confident, but it gave him a ego boost where he figured that if he could beat byakuya, he could do it again to beat his younger sister Rukia.
