Without the Captain-Commander, Yamamoto, there wouldn't be a Gotei 13 to defend the world. Yamamoto is one of Bleach's most ancient, most fascinating characters, and it's a character we've looked at before on the channel. But this time, in his own character analysis, it's time to take a dive into what makes Yamamoto the all-powerful figurehead of Soul Society, and whether there's more to this gruff old grandpa than a flaming zanpakuto!

There are plenty of great moments with Yamamoto I can totally think of.
A list of my favorite Yamamoto moments
1. When he splits Ayon in half and then incinerated him till there was nothing left.
2. Commending the Tres Bestias for coming at him with one arm and leaves them with just a few burns. (Glad he didn’t kill them off by the way).
3. Withstanding Wonderweiss’s multiple hits and took them like a champ
4. Even though it was off screen during the Soul Society arc, his fight with Shunsui and Ukitake. Especially before he fights them he says “Bring it on you young-ins. It’s way past a spanking time.”
5. Giving the opportunity of having all captains and lieutenants to put all of their spiritual pressure in one sword to give Ichigo’s powers back. Returning him the favor for defeating Aizen.
6. His close friendship with Chojiro.
That’s pretty much it on my list. Still looking forward on the expansion of his fight with Yhwach in the anime.

I haven't seen a ton of anime by my standards, but Yamamoto's fire based power stands out as the most iconic & devastating.
Fire that can take life & bring it back from the dead, fucking amazing.

The thing I absolutely love about yama is how unlike other old men in anime he has made mistakes however his presence always feels truly imposing every time he is on screen.

Yama was like a reformed yakuza boss who realized the shinigami’s traditional heartless/ruthless ways shouldn’t be the future of the soul society, but he remains a product of his era.
Or still the yakuza boss but that yakuza runs the whole military / government so...

That wasn’t suicide as he only sacrificed an arm in the process. This move was more like “oh call an ambulance, but not for me”

Could you imagine if Yamamoto used that attack on Ywach when the former the latter cloak. Defeated, near death and no bankai, but with the last of his strength he cast Hadō #96 before Ywach himself could destroy his body. It probably wouldn't have kill ywach but damage him enough that it would give Ichigo enough of an advantage.
He's the true representative of old Gotei 13. Lawful, ruthless, protector, unmoving stagnant, willing to do anything regardless to keep order and the balance maintained. In the end however Shunsui is a more worthy successor with his wide ranging reforms that have brought a degree of true change for the first time since forever. Also take note of how brutally humiliating Yamamoto's death was, it was almost a brief apology for all the horrific atrocities he committed in his long life before being dispatched to the real flames.
I kinda saw different. Yamma of old was evil. He was stronger then, because he was without chains of central 46. Then he was shackled. We all know if he had the same mindset of old, fake katakana town with all there would have melted just to kill Aizen. Those shackles started to loosen it's hold though, gave him a different strength when, Aizen turning trader and with Ichigo being thrown in. Yamma learned to bend rules. It's hard for those who were rehabilitated to adapt from evil to rules lawyer, to balance. I also didn't find his death humiliating. We see his sins catching up. That the gotei 13 was a start for him redemption but truthfully his sins were too great. He had too much blood on his hands, that realization is heavy. While unfair (I will be crying) he doesn't get to fix his mistakes. Plus plot got him.
@@charminglady2011 You coined it exactly. It's why Yamamoto (next to Ichigo) is my favorite character in the series. This man is something else..and I really hope Monday's episode will show how close he and Sasakibe were. I'll be screaming when Yamamoto goes Bankai but a big hole will appear in my heart when he slides off his own torso....

Yhwach claims the soul society has become weaker over the years because they are less bloodthirsty and violent than they used to be. However, I’m sure Yama knew that valuing life isn’t weakness. That’s what separates him from Yhwach, who will kill his own men for fun or out of boredom.
The soul society moving away from the old ways is a sign of true growth.
In the words of Gandalf the Grey: “True courage isn’t knowing when to take a life, but when to spare one.”
*He should’ve taken Yhwach’s life 1,000 years ago, but the point still stands.
Except Mayuri killed his own men in soul society arc and Yama didn't care. In this arc Mayuri killed poor people in the rukongai and Yama said he'd have approved of it.... so....
@@koobertohumperdink8702 I honestly don’t remember Mayuri killing anyone in Soul Society arc(it’s been a while so my memory could be a little fuzzy), and the tybw example is a tough one because it was an emergency.

Yamamoto is one of my favorite Captains. It's fascinating how he completely changes following the death of Sasakibe. His rage blinded him near the end.
Indeed. It was a vision of who he was in the past but who can blame him? Sasikibe's death was the sign that the end was near and Yamamoto was going to face his final battle.
Yamamoto is the fiery old G. His presence was felt every time he was on screen
I think Yamamoto was transitioning from being a warrior to a mentor and teacher before he died. He slowly went from not caring about anyone but Sasakibe, Shunsui, and Ukitake to actually wanting to invest in the growth of the soul society.
I really love the symbolism of the man whose name is the same as the Devil and who uses the flames of Hell, was killed by the son of God and then cast into Hell himself. Yama is a really cool take on the badass old man archetype, in that the people who pick up after him are not really stronger then him, but rather better people who will bring positive changes to the system he built.
I think when we ultimately get the hell arc In full, we’ll see the bloodthirsty yamamoto he used to be a 1000 years ago. Only now he’ll be far stronger because of the hell amp

Yamamoto lived long enough to see the error of his ways and that is what made him the current leader that he is today , a more chill version but still deep down he can go 0 to 100 in the blink of an eye
We got a small taste of his power from his captain meetings and the respect he was given. We got a bit more from him confronting his own two "favorite" and possibly the strongest captains when they helped Ichigo rescue Rukia. We got a bit more of his strength when he confronted Aizen on above the fake karakura town fight. Then we got the full beast when the Quincy returned.
Whenever yama is in the scene it really hammers in how old most of the characters are, it's kinda easy to forget when the people you see most often are mid teens to early 20s looking but yama even looking like most "old age" anime characters he somehow shows how truly ancient he is in his presence
Yamajii being super nice to hitsugaya and putting momo to sleep almost had the same vibe as a grandpa watching over the kids 😂. Can't believe I only now noticed.
A story about a younger Yamamoto would be a great light novel

I love watching Mr.Tommo because he shares the same uncontainable enthusiasm for bleach n manga that I do. He often just runs out of breath in sentences because hes said so much at one time that he doesnt inhale just because how excited he is to talk about bleach. I love it

I think is better to talk about Yamamoto now because he will have his big character arc and character moment soon, Yhwach on the other hand will have his character arc near the end of the anime season 3 and 4.

@@quesodagod8840 The anime will be split in 4 cours each cour will be around 12 episodes more or less. So I do expect breaks in between those cours aka seasons, otherwise the quality of the adaptation will suffer.

Yamamoto is one of those characters who left me cold early on, but who I really came to appreciate, especially due to the Arrancar arc doing a great job humanizing him. That arc showed that while Yamamoto is certainly stern and authoritarian, he is 100% committed to protecting the world of the Living at any cost, ready to sacrifice his life without hesitation to defeat evil and even handicap himself during fights to avoid the destruction of Karakura town. He truly does lead by example.
The tldr: lovable stoic VERY old man with the best bankai ever

I remember the early 00s and seeing Yama, and he became an instant favorite after him speed blitzing Shunsui and Ukitake 😆 that scene made it for me
This character is the embodiment of my favourite trope in all of shonen.

I might've missed it but I thought you would've made mention of his stubbornness when it came to not accepting Orihime's help in restoring his arm.
That type of stubbornness is really a weakness that Aizen et al exploited.

Yama's bankai is a manifestation of a phrase "Famous last words, right there", (for him mainly)
Imagine being around someone,seeing them almost everyday for thousands of years. Then you lose them in a few minutes it would be way worse than like a normal person loosing someone. Shunsui too with loosing pretty much his dad and brother ukitaki it’s really sad!

I truly enjoy watching and listening to tommo. I mean I’ve watched bleach and read the manga but he brings out nuances I didn’t consider before
With the dead Captains ending up in hell, Yamamoto is probably reigning as king.
Yama is one of those characters where the more you think of him; the more you can't decide if he's an awful leader or a badass old man.

I dont think its questionable about whether he is a badass old man or not. That seems pretty decided.
As for bad leader, I personally dont think so. He does a decent job. He got outplayed but its by an enemy that was LITERALLY living in his shdadow. The quincies arent even foreign threats because they have been watching in the seiretei since 1000 years ago.
I like to think that because of Aizens betrayal which resulted in fighting his sons and basically playing right in his hands is what made him realize he was being too stubborn and blind tot he truth and so became just a bit more lenient
Always enjoyed Yama because he stayed ready for the beef. Although I wish there was more interaction between him and Unohana.
I still believe Yamamoto is the 5th Noble House, leader and the Noble who wanted Hell Sealed

I like how almost every fight, even some filler, they keep him from using his zanpakuto.
This video is perfect timing and I think when we voted for this video we knew it had to be Yamamoto before Ywhach. Next few episodes of the TYBW are going to be crazy! I love how Yama doesn’t play around at all in the series and I love how he isn’t faultless despite his thousands of years of experience.

I also love and most often agree with your ranking videos, so I was thinking that it would be great if you could make a ranking video on all captains of all time (every captain introduced tu us through out the storyline) from weakest to strongest. This also would be lovely to see on vise captains as well...
Yamamoto is the bridge between the old dark past of the Soul Society (the nobles of old, Ichibe, Soul King, Old Gotei, etc) and the new progressive SS (Ichigo, Kyoraku, bending the rules, etc). I love his character. I will be sobbing when he goes. The big 3 really did drive home with the whole "out with the old, in with the new" concept. Just looking at the old Gotei, the One Piece World Government, and the 5 nations of Naruto...progression is the key.
But ultimately in the end naruto and bleach end up creating a new status quo that still hold some of the old problems

Great video as always, I absolutely loved the part when you were talking about Sasakibe and Yamamoto’s relationship, the fact that you mentioned how it was great for Yamamoto’s character developpement and not really for us as a reader because we (and kubo) obviously don’t care about Chojiro (sorry)
One thing I like about Yamamoto is how, when facing Aizen and loosing an arm, he kept it to remind him of the fight. And I like to think that because of that and the anger, he immediately goes Bankai against Ywach, he doesn't wait, he goes all out right away.
Amazing vid for one of the most badass characters ever! Old yama always makes the scenes so epic with his power and his arrogance 😂❤ his presence always makes every scene he is in intense and you can feel he's a killer and someone who had so much history! The reaction with his eyes is amazing touch that kubo did and i always noticed it 😂❤ kubo did an insane job visually and ability wise! He's the strongest character but what kubo didn't do well is that he always makes him fall for tricks! Its like kubo created a way too powerful character and he don't know how to make him lose! So with Aizen its a trick and now here against ywha is also a trick! Give me a better ending! Like makes him die but that death was humiliating! He bested the guy 1000 years ago in the story so make it more pull and push type of event, he wanted to show us he is the strongest but yes as always there's a trick so he gets out of the picture! That i really didn't like! Being tired and getting struck once and thats it! I wish it could've been done better! He lived over 1000 years but still tricked in that way, he should've made it more better kubo, but aside from his death i think everything else is what i hoped and more! Especially his bankai is just OP 😂 can't wait to see in the anime in the next few eps!! It will be INSANE! Literally and i am sure they will pull it off! Seeing the flames and everything gonna be crazy! Yamamoto genryusai will always be one hell of a character.

I've never read the manga, so congrats for the in-depth analysis, I've learned a lot about this character as I've been learning about Bleach by this channel.
I used not to like Yamamoto, thinking he was too harsh and rude, but after Sasakibe's death I've started to look at him compassionately.
Pity that he's going to die (maybe next episode) right now that he's become one of my favorites in this arc.
I like a lot about him, but something I truly love that he shows off..along with a few other characters, is the possibility of someone's Bankai having several different abilities rather than just one. I mention this because a lot of Bankai seem like one trick ponies, but it's clear that it doesn't have to remain that way. With enough time, experience, and training, a Bankai can gain different abilities as it matures into its full potential. How much Ichigo's Bankai changes is another good example.

There was an anime only moment where he briefly speaks to Yachiru in a cutsey grandfatherly tone and it was adorable.

I think one thing that's notable about Yamamoto's rigidity and heavy-handed nature... he's seen what the world was like before the Gotei 13. Hell, he's possibly seen what the world was like before the separation of the realms.
The kind of disarray that motivated his founding of the Gotei 13 informs every decision he makes after that. For him it's order at all costs because he's seen what the world is like without it.
I love this character and his bankai is by far my favorite.
I only hope we get the best animators working on his fight because so far we've had terrible camera placement and constant cuts to mask a lack of animation which is damaging this adaptation for me.
I hope Yamashita has liberty to take care of entire fights because he understands action better than what we've seen thus far.

Yamamoto knew Ichigo was coming to Rukia's execution because he didn't seem that surprised by it.
Yamamoto is a good example of an how a fictional character is written too strong. He was teased as the strongest captain but didn't get to show it. Rather he was put aside so that the antagonists could show off their superiority in battle and strategy. Not just that but he was also way too proud to ask for the help of others such as Orihime or Ichigo. When he faced fake Yhwach with just one arm he lost severally and was humiliated. Kubo had to step in when Yamamoto was weak enough so to give him a battle he couldn't win anymore.
If you want to be honest he didnt directly show it but in a sense you can tell he was the strongest Captain....during with his battle with Aizen he explained that no other Shinigami is stronger than him that's why he is Captain Commander, second his Bankai as I'm sure you know is INSANE !!
@@RATEDBTV yes his power is insane but he doesn't have many feats to proof it. Think of right now where he's just watching the Shinigami getting demolished. The same mistake in fake karakura town. In Soul society arc it was already established that he was the strongest captain commander but didn't directly defeat Shinsui noir Ukitake. In tybw Yhwach could steal his insane Bankai and than one shot him. Implying that they are equally strong. I mean Yhwach gets insane amounts of power ups later on in the story.
@@Grayson-Winchester the sun gives us vitamin d warmth and light, yet what happens if we get too close? Yamma is a soul reaper, he is meant to protect, so he like the sun does so, however his power unleashed can cause unfortunate destruction like a nova.
I would argue that Ywach (before he activates "the almighty") is NOT stronger than Yamamoto only because he used a Double to fight him and last but not least he only one shotted him because its takes a tremendous amount of power to use his Bankai remember he has to finish the fight quickly or else him and the rest of soul society would be destroyed. So him deactivating it and then finding out that wasnt the real Ywach was basically checkmate Genryusai was in trouble and he knew it but Ywach played it well as to NOT fight Yamamoto head on. He going to speak to Aizen was a side mission at best lol

Hey I am new here. Reading through the comments and just wanted to say how nice everyone seems. When there is a misunderstanding or different point of view everyone seems to go "oh I thought it was like x but I can totally see why you see why and that is a cool thought/ thanks for letting me know." Way more mellow then other anime communities I've read though.

29:22 If I had to guess what Yamaoto meant by passing down the knowledge of the Oken, Yamamoto might not have always been the Captain-Commander. Its stated he was the first but my theory is at some point Yamamoto "retired" to teach at the academy once again (maybe that's when he encountered Shunsui & Ukitake at the academy) & left the position to someone else (likely a current or former member of squad 0), when they were promoted to squad 0 or killed Yamamoto took up the position again (hence the statement of being the Captain-Commander for a 1000 years).

I'd love an arc or a story of the original Gotei 13..um lets say, even if its short as 30 minutes like Creation of Akatsuki, to see how Yamamoto grind all those powerfull criminals and make them to fight together as the original Gotei 13, especially a longer story of momma Unohana😺
in the old lore of the story yams was like the 31rst or something captain commander before retconning he founded the gotai 13

Thank you so much for your breakdown of head captain Yamamoto. He is one of my favorite characters but I have to be honest I did not like the way they killed him off in the blood war ark. We finally get to see his tremendous power come to a head then all of a sudden now he's dead. To me that just seemed like that was lazy writing it was a rush job. I really hope unless it's already been done that someone does for Bleach what another writer did for Naruto and do a separate novel of more character development. And by the way even though this is off topic Kenpachi's Bankai is another rush job. Once again thank you for this breakdown
I'm hoping he gets more time to shine in the new manga arc. They dropped the fact he is reborn in hell. And if that bankai has gotten amplified like is shown, it's gonna be bonkers broken crazy
I usually don’t like old men characters cuz of the tropes they are but Yamamoto really stands out and. I respect him a lot. Was even happy I got his TYBWA version in Brave souls.
