"Political assassin", within the context you describe John D'oyly makes perfect sense. He was indeed a clever and crafty political assassin This was obvious in the way he used the intelligence tactics to end the Kandyan kingdom. I also observe his existence in Ceylon as a man with inner conflicts as well. Why? He became closer to the Sinhala culture by investing lot of time to learn the language, beliefs and cultural habits of Sinhala population. I think the suicide theory may have some partial merits due to his loyalty to the British colonial crown and his liking for the Sinhala culture which might have given birth to possible inner emotional conflicts. Had he lived to ripe old age, he would've witnessed the rapiid cultural and economic degradation of ordinary Sinhala population which would have created an even deeper crisis. D'oyly's use of intelligence strategies was ruthless. For instance, the tactics like using Sinhala speaking coastal Muslims and Sinhala people as spies by disguising them as Buddhist monks and other not so suspicious civilians to gather intelligence information of Kandyan kingdom was clever, but ruthless in the sense the cultural hatred such tactics would've created among the local population. D'oyly was also a crafty and ruthless political assassin in the way he handled the Kandyan chieftains who were hostile to the Kandyan king and the level of deception used when the "Kandyan Convention" was drafted. D'oyly would've known all well the British colonials had no intention of honouring such political agreements of systematic invasion. Turning the Kandyan king into an alcoholic also displays the ruthlessness D'oyly as an intelligence chief which also expanded into the general Sinhala population in which we see the horrible effects of alcoholism among the Sinhala populace to this day. It is important to understand the contradictory behaviour of D'oyly in terms of 19th century British colonial system in order to help us understand and find solutions to our modern day political and cultural crisis' that have colonial roots. It is possible D'oyly's apparent sudden demise might have been not so sudden and his health issues could have been exacerbated by an issue of conflicts in his conscience, assuming he did have such a conscience in relation to the welfare of Sinhala populace. Whether the calm ruthlessness D'oyly displayed was a cultural trait of the colonial British that has expanded into modern era or whether it is a behavioural characteristic of all of us humans that surfaces when requied is something we perhaps should invest our thinking to understand. One thing is clear from Kaari's research into John D'oyly. That is, we need to do more work to understand the behaviour of D'oyly. @@ericperera3875 no, sri lankans were better than wanda, but considering the changes that has been made since the portugese invades 1505 and till 1948, the architecture, cultural mix, education, language exchange and all, I would say the invades and the colonization from the europe resulted to a better version of sri lanka than it was, but from 1948 the way the locals ruled the country is a different story and a sad one.

Can you please clarify the person mentioned in the list @18:50 is the not the aforementioned Solomon Dias? As per Wikipedia Don William Dias was the one who was involved when the last Kandyan King captured.
